Abstract: International audience; Large-scale outdoor mesocosms were designed and co-contaminated with metals (Cd, Pb, Zn) and organic compounds to better understand the complex functioning of urban roadside swale environments. Infiltration systems were planted with macrophytes (P. arundinaceae, J. effusus and I. pseudacorus) or grassed, and natural or spiked target metals were monitored over two years. In the non-spiked mesocosms, atmospheric metal inputs were slightly higher than outputs, leading to low metal accumulation in topsoils and to very low outflow water contamination (< 0.7% of the initial metal stock). In the spiked infiltration systems that simulated point pollution through water inflow, transfer of the initial stock of metals to the deeper soil layers was quite low and outflow water contamination was very low (< 0.6% of the initial stock). The main metal output from these systems occurred in the first days of their installation because of the high metal solubility in water and insufficient plant cover at that time. The infiltration systems stabilized after a few weeks, probably because of stronger sorption to soil aggregates, and because of plant root development. Mephytoextraction in plant roots was more efficient in mesocosms planted with P. arundinacea and grass. Metal phytoextraction in plant aerial parts was also better for grass and P. arundinacea, when considering metal standing stocks instead of their concentration in plants. J. effusus was a good metal accumulator, but its low aboveground biomass development was less favorable to metal removal through harvesting.

Abstract: International audience; This paper assesses the value of mitigating erosive runoff events in a severely prone watershed of France using a discrete choice experiment approach. Good farming practices are integrated together with flood protection programs within a common management policy. The inclusion of risk exposure and socio-demographic variables in a random parameter logit model allows accounting for both latent and observed heterogeneity in references. Results show substantial benefits for each of the management alternatives valued. Results also identify that preferences significantly vary across respondents which suggests that policy makers should consider heterogeneity in preferences when designing policies for various area profiles in order to closely monitor welfare improvements.

Abstract: Nowadays, the sustainability of human activities is a major worldwide concern. The challenge is to evaluate such activities not only in terms of efficiency and productivity, but also in terms of their economic, social, environmental, etc. durability. For this, the experts of these areas need to work collaboratively. In this context, human societies are facing several major challenges such as: (1) process a large amount of information whose volume increases exponentially (“big data”), (2) live in a both dynamic and imperfect real world, (3) predict and assess future states of its activities.The researches we have conducted in this thesis contribute in particular to the domain of decision systems engineering under uncertainty. We have chosen the field of general socio-environmental systems as subject of study, particularly the multidisciplinary field of agriculture. We propose a systemic approach for the sustainable optimization of socio-environmental systems: (1) the meta-modeling of socio-environmental systems, (2) the generic representation of data imperfection flowing in such systems, associated to a decision model in uncertain environment and finally (3) the simulation and the assessment of such systems in dynamic environment for the purpose of decision making by experts which we have illustrated by both a service-oriented architecture model and case studies applied to the agriculture domain.; De nos jours, la durabilité des activités humaines devient une préoccupation majeure dans le monde entier. Il s’agit d’évaluer ces activités non seulement en matière d’efficacité et de productivité, mais aussi en ce qui concerne leurs durabilités économique, sociale, environnementale, etc. Pour ce faire, les experts de ces différents domaines doivent travailler en collaboration. Dans ce contexte, les sociétés humaines sont confrontées à plusieurs défis majeurs qui sont les suivants : (1) traiter de grandes quantités d’informations (« big data »), (2) évoluer dans un monde réel dynamique et imparfait, (3) prévoir et évaluer les états futurs de ses activités.Les recherches que nous avons menées dans cette thèse contribuent plus particulièrement au domaine de l’ingénierie des systèmes de décision en univers incertain. Nous prenons comme objet d'étude général le domaine des systèmes socio-environnementaux, et plus particulièrement le domaine pluridisciplinaire de l’agriculture. Nous proposons une approche systémique pour l’optimisation durable des systèmes socio-environnementaux : (1) la méta-modélisation des systèmes socio-environnementaux, (2) la représentation générique de l’imperfection des informations qui circulent dans ces systèmes, associée à un modèle de décision en contexte incertain et enfin (3) la simulation et l’évaluation de ces systèmes en environnement dynamique en vue de prises de décisions par des experts, que nous avons illustrée par un modèle d’architecture orientée service ainsi que des études de cas appliquées au domaine de l’agriculture.

Abstract: Since many decades, enzymatic activities are used to assess the effects of land use changes, agricultural practices and soil contamination on soil functioning. A lot of studies point out contradictory results depending notably on the methodology used, as well as soil characteristics… To overcome the lack of consensus concerning indicators available to assess soil quality and functioning, the national research programme “Bioindicator” (overseen by ADEME) was set up in France to develop and assay biological indicators (2006–2012). We aimed at standardizing and emphasizing the number of biochemical measurements, and developed miniaturized colorimetric methods to obtain a great enzymatic dataset. Thirteen activities (from three laboratories) were measured within this programme, in 47 modalities of 13 experimental sites differing in terms of land use (Corine land cover), contamination type – Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbures or metals – and pollution levels (Vibrisse 8th decile). This dataset allows an analysis of the effect of atmospheric or added contamination gradients on the enzymatic activities. Our objectives are to point out the sensitivity of enzymes for each type of pollution and land use, to offer the most appropriate panel for a sensible analysis. Data were analysed for the all datasets, each site and each land use. Our main conclusions are as follows: enzymes are more sensitive to metallic contamination than to organic ones; enzymes are good indicators of metal bioavailability; Alkaline phosphatase and Arylamidase are the most relevant enzymes to assess the effect of soil contamination

Abstract: International audience; Nowadays, the sustainability of human activities is a major worldwide concern. Indeed, the problem is no longer to evaluate only the efficiency of human activities, but also sustainability along many axes that can be of various kinds: economic, social, environmental, etc. Such assessments are a major challenge for today’s society. Because of the exponential development of means of data recording and storage (“big data” buzz word), and on the basis of Volume, Variety and Velocity properties of big data, scientists need to compute large amounts of data and so do not necessarily have time to clean them. In this context, they compute all available data whose types of imperfections are heterogeneous. Actors in several domains have to cope with such data, especially to assist humans in their decisions by merging them from many data sources (e.g. measurements, sensors, observations) to model behaviours of complex systems. Mathematical approaches to model imperfect data are well known and established in various scientific areas today, such as both probability based and possibility based calculus. Decisions of experts from various fields have to handle rigorous computations and aggregations of both data and their associated uncertainty. We propose a rigorous model to handle uncertainty on the attributes of objects, and a way to rigorously aggregate discrete data, whose imperfections nature are covered either by the classical probability theory (randomness), either by the possibility theory (fuzziness) thanks to the Dempster-Shafer theory.

Abstract: International audience; We propose a systemic meta-model for the sustainable simulation of socio-environmental complex systems. The approach presented integrates data uncertainty management, for both representing and manipulating rigorously quantities which may have a finite number of possible or probable values with their interdependencies. We also provide an operationalization of such models for both data retrieving, via an object-relational mapping, and model simulation, via series of triples, which are linked to examples in the field of agriculture.

Abstract: The aim of the present paper is to report the reduction of the water uptake of sunflower pith, sustainable raw by-product without current added-value in oilseed crops production. The water-sensitivity is ascribed to its structure, because mainly constituted of carbohydrates, due to the formation of additional hydrogen bondings with water molecules. Two environmentally-friendly approaches were applied to provide a modified layer presenting water resistance in surface of sunflower pith in order to keep its low-density property. The first approach based on vegetable oil corresponds to thermal and photochemical treatments. A thin layer of virgin or acrylated epoxidized soybean oil was sprayed on the pith surface, and thereafter was thermally cured or photocured, respectively. The second approach consisted in a solventless chemical modification of the pith surface by a cold plasma treatment. Both approaches were successfully performed: water resistance of sunflower pith was clearly enhanced, especially with oil-based treatments; while maintaining its integrity. Developing new and promising ecological water-resistant products of low density from sunflower pith is thought of increasing interest with potential practical applications.

Abstract: International audience; Links between the microbial community structure and soil functions are unclear. The study of these relationships requires the development of highly specific experimental approaches. In this work, the soil microbial community structure and function relationship was evaluated in relation to heat stress in a soil microcosm incubated at 17 °C and 50 °C. We selected a luvisol that included two land uses. Samples were taken from the soil of a long-term (>10 year) arable cropping plot (CC) and a permanent grassland (PG) (>25 years). The soil functions were evaluated by measuring the enzyme activities, including cellulase, N-acetyl-glucosaminidase, β-glucosidase, xylanase and dehydrogenase. The total microbial biomass was assayed by the quantification of the total DNA extracted from the microcosm soils. The abundance of total bacterial and fungal communities and different bacterial taxa were measured by qPCR rRNA genes. For both soil types, heat stress induced changes in the microbial community structure and soil functions. In most cases, the results yielded effects following heat treatment. All of the enzymes were inhibited except xylanase. Heat stress significantly reduced the total microbial biomass and fungal abundance in the soils. The abundance of the total bacterial community was not affected by heat stress. In the two soils, the dominant taxa were Actinobacteria (13–40%) and Bacteroidetes (14–32%), while Planctomycetes and Gammaproteobacteria exhibited lower abundance (0–3%). Changes in the microbial community structure and changes in the functions were correlated; the correlation was positive in the PG soil and negative in the CC soil. The changes in the CC soil structural and functional state were greater than of those observed in PG soil. Our initial hypothesis was confirmed, indeed, grassland soil is more resistant to drastic stress due to its highly abundant and highly diversified microbial community. These results represent a contribution to the understanding of soil microbial community structure and functions relationships.

Abstract: International audience; Biofilters have been implemented in urban areas due to their ability to improve road runoff quality. However, little is known about the role of soil microorganisms and plants on pollutant remediation in planted swales. Therefore, 4 large-scale outdoor mesocosms were built and co-contaminated with metals and model polycyclic arom. hydrocarbons (PAHs) (phenanthrene (Phen), pyrene (Pyr) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP)), to better understand the complex functioning of swale-like environments. Three macrophyte plant species were tested for enhanced remediation of PAHs: Juncus effusus, Iris pseudacorus, Phalaris arundinacea and a grass mix. Long-term dynamics of PAHs in water outflow and soil was studied. Results showed that only 0.07-0.22% of total PAHs were released in water outflow after 1 yr. Two years after contamination, soil sample analyses showed a dissipation of 99.6% for Phen and 99.4% for Pyr whatever the mesocosm considered and ranging from 75.5 to 91% for BaP, depending on plant species. Dissipation time-courses may be described by a biphasic process. Expts. showed that the grass mix facilitated BaP long-term biodegrdn. Grass appeared also to be the best filter for suspended solids because of its dense rhizosphere, which prevents the transfer of BaP to groundwater.

Abstract: International audience; Global warming induces new constraints on forest ecosystems and requires forest management adaptation. The reduction of stand density is currently debated in France as a potential tool to face increasing climate change-induced tree mortality risk due to summer drought by improving forest resistance to water stress. Our study aimed to assess the potential impact of this forest management adaptation on soil biodiversity, i.e. the detrital food web, and ecosystem functioning, i.e. litter and soil organic matter decomposition processes. We took advantage of a large-scale, multi-site experimental network of long-term forestry trials experimentally manipulating oak stand density through thinning operations in contrasted stand age and local abiotic context. Our results provide evidence that reducing stand density will have substantial impacts on the detrital food web structure, with cascading effects on soil functioning. While microbial biomass had little response, the effect of stand density on microbial-feeding nematodes was much more contrasted. Microarthropods such as collembolan and oribatid mites as well as diplopoda and anecic earthworms were depleted by stand density reduction. In contrast, endogeic earthworms were beneficially affected. Litter quality and decomposability decreased with stand density reduction while standard litter decomposition increased. Therefore, in situ litter decomposition was lower and carbon sequestration higher at intermediate stand density. Exploratory analysis using causal diagrams, i.e. path analyses, highlighted that those changes were mainly related to understory vegetation, microclimate and soil pH conditions alterations Overall, our study emphasizes that managing stand density of oak forests at intermediate level appears as the best way to optimize the trade-off between improving forest resistance to drought and preserving soil biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.

Abstract: International audience; Many studies report successful phytoremediation using macrophytes to treat wastewater in wetlands. However, little is known about their capabilities in Low Impact Development (LID) technologies dedicated to road water runoff management where plants are submitted to dry and flood periods. Six representative large-scale outdoor mesocosms planted with Juncus effusus, Iris pseudacorus, Phalaris arundinacea as monospecies were co-contaminated with Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs, i.e. phenanthrene, pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene), and Trace Elements (TEs, i.e. zinc, lead, and cadmium). Mesocosms were studied two years for plant biomass production, PAHs soil dissipation, and metal uptake by plants. PAHs were extracted from soils by microwave assisted extractions and analysed by gas chromatography (GC-MS) while microwave-acid digestion was used to extract metals, which were then analysed by ICP-AES. A special attention was paid to soil microbial community structure through total, fungal and bacterial biomasses using Q-PCR, 16S rDNA and 18S rDNA and total microbial activity using fluorescein diacetate enzymatic activity. A multi-parameter approach was used in order to conclude on the best macrophytes-soil system for TEs and PAHs remediation. I. pseudacorus revealed to be the worst metal accumulator correlated to soil total, bacterial and fungal biomasses. After six months, low molecular weight PAHs concentrations were divided by 10 to 100 and by 2 to 7 for benzo[a]pyrene depending on plant species. Same methods were used to study phytoremediation processes in LID technologies receiving run-off water laterally from the road as the unique source of contamination. Abstract: International audience; In many research domains, studies need to be addressed in a multidisciplinary manner: each expert deals with a particular aspect of the problem. It may be useful for experts to take into account new data, share partial results, and update their own indicators and models, in order to take advantage of new measures and updated indexes in real time. For this, an easily-understandable knowledge model for any raw data source, statistical operator, indicator or business process to be available for experts, is needed. In this paper, we propose a goal-oriented meta-model, to index and reuse treatments and an extension of existing semantic Web standards to index goal-oriented services and assist and/or automate their selection. These features enable capabilities for interoperability and information exchange between three layers of knowledge: goal, domain and data layers. An application with an existing ontology of the agriculture domain and farm durability indicators will be proposed.

Abstract: International audience; Rhizosphere is the key location for soil-plant transfer since it is the major interface for nutrient and water absorption by plants. Moreover, plant roots and their associated microbes play a specific role in phytoremediation: absorption of metals by plant roots and concentration into harvestable plant parts, degradation and volatilization of organic contaminants, immobilization and reduction in the mobility and bioavailability. Thereby, we compared the rhizospheres of three macrophytes, Juncus effusus, Iris pseudacorus, Phalaris arundinacae, grown two years as monospecies in representative large scale outdoor mesocosms. Mesocosms were co-contaminated with Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs, i.e. phenanthrene, pyrene and benzo(a)pyrene), and Trace Elements (TEs, i.e. zinc, lead, and cadmium). PAHs were extracted from soils by microwave assisted extractions and analysed by gas chromatography (GC-MS) while microwave-acid digestion was used to extract metals, which were then analysed by ICP-AES. Soil and plant TEs contents and root biomass allowed us to estimate the coefficient of soil-plant transfer. The structure and diversity of the microbial communities in rhizosphere soils were also investigated by total, fungal and bacterial biomasses determination using Q-PCR, 16S rDNA and 18S rDNA analysis. Metabolic activity was evaluated measuring Fluorescein DiAcetate (FDA) and xylanase enzymatic activities. A multi-parameter approach was then used in order to illustrate the specific influence of rhizosphere in both control and spiked mesocosms. The results allowed us to determine the best macrophytes-soil system for TEs and PAHs remediation. It was correlated with the microbial development in the rhizosphere. In order to compare this approach (from mesocosm scale to field performance) and apply our results to a real case study, grass and vegetated swale receiving laterally road runoff water were also investigated for PAHs and TEs remediation.

Abstract: National audience; City development to support population growth results in water cycle disturbance due to impervious surface area increase, water runoff pollutant fluxes [1] , and roadside soil pollutant accumulation [2] that may drive to groundwater contamination. To prevent potential long-term risks for the environment, Low Impact Development Technologies (LIDT) have been widely implemented in the past few years due to combined ecological and economic advantages. However, poor is known about the role of plants and their associated microorganisms on pollutants remediation in such green infiltration systems. Thereby, six representative large-scale outdoor mesocosms planted with Juncus effusus, Iris pseudacorus, Phalaris arundinacea as monospecies were co-contaminated with Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs, i.e. phenanthrene, pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene), and Trace Elements (TEs, i.e. zinc, lead, and cadmium). TEs uptake varies considerably with plant species and the TE considered. The sequence of TEs availability to plant was determined. PAHs concentrations in soil were drastically reduced after six months and divided by 10 to 100 for low molecular weight PAHs and by 2 to 7 for benzo[a]pyrene depending on plant species. In order to compare this approach at mesocosm scale to LIDT performance and apply our results to a real case study, grass and vegetated swales receiving laterally road runoff water were also investigated for pollutant remediation and microbial characterization. The results show similar conclusion as those obtained with experimental mesocosms. Through this study, application of analytical chemistry to environmental purpose is illustrated and the need of a multidisciplinary approach to study ecological technologies benefits is pointed out.

Abstract: International audience; The maintenance of harbor waterways generates large amts. of dredged sediments which are often rich in coexisting org. and inorg. contaminants. Electrokinetic remediation treatments have recently been developed for the simultaneous removal of heavy metals and polycyclic arom. hydrocarbons (PAHs), using various enhancing agents generally tested sequentially. In this study, different processing fluids were tested, alone or mixed, to improve the decontamination of aged model sediment contaminated with cadmium, lead, chromium, copper, zinc, and five PAHs. Nitric acid (NA) and citric acid (CA) were tested to avoid the formation of an alk. front into the sediment and favor the metals removal, while an anionic surfactant [sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)] and a nonionic surfactant (Tween 20) were tested to solubilize and mobilize PAHs. Processing fluids were circulated under a const. voltage gradient of 1 V cm-1 for 10-14 days. NA showed an excellent potential to remove metals (76.8-99.9 % removal) and PAHs (70.3-89.7 % removal) in a single run. Besides, the mixt. of Tween 20 and CA, more environmental friendly, could be considered as a relatively good processing fluid for the simultaneous removal of metals (10.3-90.8 % removal) and PAHs (53.6-61.6 % removal) from the fine-grained sediment, while SDS mixed to CA was not a good candidate for this purpose (0.1-65 % removal for metals and 34.1-41.0 % removal for PAHs).

Abstract: The use of pesticides in agriculture has highly increased during the last 40 years to increase crop yields. However, today most pesticides are polluting water, soil, atmosphere and food. Pesticides are also impact soil enzymes, which are essential catalysts ruling the quality of soil life. In particular, the activity of soil enzymes control nutrient cycles, and, in turn, fertilization. Here, we review the effects of pesticides on the activity of soil enzymes in terrestrial ecosystems. Enzymes include dehydrogenase, fluorescein diacetate hydrolase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, phosphatase, beta-glucosidase, cellulase, urease and aryl-sulfatase. Those enzymes are involved in the cycles of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus. The main points of our analysis are (1) the common inhibition of dehydrogenase in 61 % of studies, stimulation of cellulase in 56 % of studies and no response of aryl-sulfatase in 67 % of studies. (2) Fungicides have mainly negative effects on enzymatic activities. (3) Insecticides can be classified into two groups, the first group represented by endosulfan having an overall positive impact while the second group having a negative effect. (4) Herbicides can be classified into two groups, one group with few positive effect and another group with negative effect.

Abstract: Land Use and Cover Changes (LUCCs) significantly increase the frequency of mudflows in the silty areas of north-western Europe and particularly in the NUTS 3 Seine-Maritime region (France). Predicting the effects of a range of possible LUCCs helps local authorities choose policies that can help to mitigate the risks to which local populations are exposed. In this article we build scenarios for changes in farming systems, with a 2015 horizon and with 2007 as the initial situation. These scenarios are assessed through combined biophysical and economic approaches. Two scenarios for the disappearance of dairy farming are chosen. One scenario has no public-action program (StopMilk), while the other one has a program based on the funding of best management practices (StopMilk-E). These scenarios are assessed at the small watershed scale (7 km2) in terms of both changes in farming systems and effects on runoff (use of the STREAM model). Finally, the economic evaluation of additional costs of StopMilk-E is extrapolated at the level of the Austreberthe watershed syndicate (214 km2), using the French Land Parcel Identification System (LPIS) with a spatially referenced database of cropping plans. StopMilk leads to a significant increase in runoff whereas the local public-action program proposed under StopMilk-E reduces runoff to below the 2007 level. The Austreberthe watershed residents’ willingness to pay for a 15-year program is around €395,000/year, which is not sufficient to balance the cost of the modified farming practices (€640,000/year over the first 3 years). Funding of the practices would require either subsidies from a higher level (Europe), borrowing by the community, and/or a more selective approach in the type and the location of farming practices to be funded. The method used for calculating costs at the watershed syndicate level shows the huge potential of new databases like LPIS (available in France since 2006) for the assessment of environmental issues.

Abstract: International audience; In a global context of sharing information, such as Big Data and cloud computing paradigms, researchers are developing many means to deal with new data models and algorithms. However, the development and reuse of these ones is complex because of the heterogeneity of environments, data formats and contexts of use all around of the world. That's why a way to share and reuse algorithms and treatments through a common formalism is needed, for both machines and computers. The ultimate goal of our work is to provide a collaborative platform for not only experts but also machines automatically develop, reuse and chain treatments, computations and models. For this, we rely on a goal-oriented approach which is associated with the Semantic Web, to establish a common formalism to design models for worldwide researchers. In this article, we propose the formalization of our approach thanks to an algebra which is linked to the Semantic Web standards. Finally, we provide a high-level language dedicated to both computers and experts, illustrated with examples that are linked to the agriculture domain.

Abstract: International audience; The impact of a multiple contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was studied on permanent grassland soil, historically presenting low contamination (i.e. less than 1 mg kg(-1)). Soil microcosms were spiked at 300 mg kg(-1) with either single or a mixture of seven PAHs. While total dissipation of the phenanthrene was reached in under 90 days, only 60% of the PAH mixture were dissipated after 90 days. Interestingly, after 30 days, the abundance of the GammaProteobacteria class (assessed by qPCR) become significantly higher in microcosms spiked with the PAH mixture. In addition, the specific abundance of the cultivable Pseudomonas spp., which belong to the GammaProteobacteria class, increased earlier and transiently (after 8 days) in the microcosms spiked with the PAH mixture. Consequently, we propose to use the GammaProteobacteria as a bioindicator to detect the impact on the bacterial community of a multiple contamination by PAHs in agricultural soils.

Abstract: The volume of data, and the large number of biological variables to be tested (one hundred), require analytical techniques, such asRandom Forests, which can overcome the problem of multi-colinearity for the selection of indicators, sensitive to various factors.Random Forests methodology is appropriate for the selection of the most discriminant variables. So, we searched for the best wayto select them, by bringing together all biological variables, representing the Microflora and Fauna. This approach focuses on impactindicators from the Bio2 program, indicators of flora and indicators of accumulation (snails) were not included.This work has been implemented on the three factors of discrimination : land use, metallic contamination levels and organic contaminationlevels.We grouped the most discriminating variables from each RF analysis. Linear discriminant analysis was then implemented for each factor,in order to develop a predictive model., El volumen de datos definidos en el programa bioindicadores 2 (Ademe) y el muy grande numero de variables biológicas para probar(una centena) necesitan técnicas de análisis como los Random Forests que pueden liberarse del problema de multicolinealidad para laselección de indicadores sensibles a los diferentes factores estudiados.La metodología de Random Forests consiste en la selección de variables las más discriminantes. Así buscamos la mejor selección agrupandoel conjunto de las variables biológicas que representan la Microflora y la Fauna. Estos trabajos se realizaron sobre los tres factoresde discriminación : el uso de los suelos, los niveles de contaminación en ETM y los niveles de contaminación en contaminantes orgánicos.Luego, agrupamos las variables las más discriminantes derivadas de cada análisis por RF. Un análisis discriminante linear se realizodespués para cada factor con vista a elaborar un modelo predictivo. Se observaron los indicadores del grupo Flora únicamente sobreun sub-conjunto de 47 parcelas de modalidades contrastadas, así no los incluimos en nuestro estudio. Ces travaux ont été mis en oeuvre sur les trois facteurs de discrimination : l’usage des sols, les niveaux de contamination en ETM,et les niveaux de contamination en polluants organiques.Nous avons ensuite regroupé les variables les plus discriminantes issues de chaque analyse par RF. Une analyse discriminante linéairea ensuite été mise en oeuvre pour chaque facteur en vue d’élaborer un modèle prédictif.

Abstract: International audience; Relational databases are a standard for representing data models. SQL is the most widely used language for querying such databases. Consequently, in many research domains, scientists extract data from relational databases, compute them and do statistical treatments. But they have to deal with the complexity of relational databases models. In addition, it takes a long time for the scientists to manually retrieve and compute data. That's why we propose a system which automatically does. It contains the following layers: parameterizable extraction of data, automatic process of SQL queries, data aggregation, statistical parameters computation, writing the results to tables and final data processing by the scientist, thanks to a statistical analysis software. A use case on the research on a soil quality index from a large relational database will be presented.

Abstract: International audience; Studying spatial patterns of soil engineers has become an important issue that may contribute to a better understanding of soil functioning. We investigated the spatial patterns of earthworm species assemblages in a recently settled and an old temperate pasture. Earthworms were sampled following a spatially explicit sampling design. Data were analysed using Spatial Analysis by Distance IndicEs methods to describe the main characteristics of earthworm spatial patterns: aggregation index, patch and/or gap number and size, and the frequencies of species association or dissociation. Ten lumbricid species composed the earthworm assemblages in both pastures, some of them displaying a spatial distribution characterized by clusters with areas of patches and gaps. By comparing aggregation indices between the pastures, an increase of the spatial organization level in the community was observed in the old pasture. We also observed differences between the pastures in the number of aggregated species, cluster characteristics, ratio between spatial association/dissociation and spatial overlap. We also found some significant relationships between species pairs that were already described in the literature, enabling us to discuss the possible nature of interactions. Our results suggest that earthworm spatial distribution and community assembly are likely driven by interspecific interactions at the local scale.

Les pratiques agricoles figurent parmi les activités qui conduisent à une modification durable des propriétés des sols. Les activités enzymatiques peuvent être utilisées comme indicateur de la qualité des sols. Elles (i) renseignent sur l'activité microbienne globale du sol, (ii) catalysent toutes les réactions biochimiques et sont partie intégrante des cycles biogéochimiques des éléments nutritifs, (iii) sensibles aux pratiques culturales et aux changements du mode de gestion des sols, (iv) facile à mesurer. Les enzymes ont été largement utilisées pour étudier l’impact des polluants des pratiques agricoles telle que la fertilisation, ou encore des rotations culturales. La plupart de ces études a été réalisée dans un contexte pédoclimatique donné et avec un panel restreint d’activités enzymatiques.

Abstract: International audience; Enzymes are known to be sensitive indicators of soil quality. Nevertheless, the natural variability of their activities needs to be considered for a relevant interpretation of activity levels, especially in contaminated soils. We first monitored the variability of enzymatic activities (acid and alkaline phosphatases, β-glucosidase, N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase, urease and dehydrogenase) in two agricultural sites in north-western France during a seasonal April–October cycle. For both sites, two types of long-term different agricultural managements, grassland and intensive cropping were considered. Our results revealed great variability of enzymatic activities in space and over time, yet more pronounced for grassland than for cropped soils. Then, we assessed the impact of copper on enzymes activity on Terrestrial Model Ecosystems (TMEs) filled with undisturbed soil, and incubated for 70 days in open-field conditions. Copper was added at two concentration levels corresponding to a regulated annual agronomic input (2 mg kg−1) or to a high soil contamination (200 mg kg−1). In comparison to effects of natural spatiotemporal variability of soil conditions, copper addition did not show significant impacts on enzymatic activities. Finally, our results confirmed that for assessing effective impacts of contaminants in soils under real field conditions, natural spatiotemporal soil variability must be considered.

Ces contaminations modulent les propriétés bio-physico-chimiques des sols, qui peuvent être évaluées par la mesure d’activités enzymatiques. En effet, les enzymes, qui sont impliquées dans de nombreux processus du sol : respiration, cycles biogéochimiques des éléments essentiels (C, N, P, S), transformation des contaminants…, constituent des bioindicateurs reconnus et utilisés depuis de nombreuses années pour évaluer le fonctionnement du sol. Cependant, dans un contexte de contraintes multiples (usage des sols, couverture végétale…), l’interprétation des résultats obtenus reste difficile.L’objectif de notre approche est d’étudier la pertinence et la sensibilité de 13 activités enzymatiques du sol choisies comme indicateur d’impact des contaminations chimiques, tout en considérant le type d’occupation des sols. Parallèlement, plusieurs stratégies d’association des indicateurs ont été testées en utilisant différents indices disponibles. Des sols très contrastés en texture, localisation géographique et couverture végétale, mais également différents par leur contamination chimique ont été retenus et prélevés en quadruplicats. 13 activités enzymatiques, essentiellement de type hydrolase, ont été mesurées dans les 48h. Les résultats sont très contrastés selon les activités enzymatiques et les situations considérées, avec un fort impact de l’occupation du sol et de l’anthropisation sur la sensibilité des indicateurs.Nos résultats confirment la diversité des réponses des enzymes du sol sous différentes pressions anthropiques, et la possibilité d’utiliser ce compartiment fonctionnel très diversifié comme indicateur de fonctionnement du sol. Cependant, il reste nécessaire de disposer de plus grands jeux de données pour hiérarchiser l’impact des différentes contraintes et mieux quantifier l’impact des contaminants chimiques.

Abstract: La stabilité structurale est une propriété physique des sols importante, indicatrice de leur sensibilité à la battance et à l’érosion. Les sols limoneux, qui couvrent des surfaces importantes en France et dans le Nord de l’Europe ont, du fait de leur texture et de leur faible teneur en matières organiques, une stabilité structurale faible. Dans un contexte où l’on se préoccupe de la diminution de la teneur en matière organique des sols, où se développe l’apport de produits résiduaires organiques au sol et où se diversifient les pratiques culturales et les systèmes de culture, il apparaît nécessaire de développer des outils de prédiction de la stabilité structurale en fonction de la quantité et de la qualité des matières organiques. Nous avons développé une relation statistique qui relie la stabilité de la structure à la constitution des sols, en particulier à leur teneur en carbone organique (C), à partir d’une base de données AGRESTA de 480 sols assemblée pendant cette étude. Cependant sa faible capacité prédictive ne permet pas de l’utiliser comme fonction de pédotransfert. L’examen de 7 essais de longue durée ou réseaux de parcelles sur sols limoneux a montré des améliorations de la stabilité de la structure en quelques années avec des pratiques qui permettent une augmentation de la teneur en C dans l’horizon de surface (non labour, prairies temporaires, semis direct sous couvert végétal (SCV), apports répétés de composts). La teneur en C totale de l’horizon est souvent un meilleur prédicteur de la stabilité structurale que des fractions organiques (carbohydrates solubles à l’eau chaude, matières organiques particulaires) ou que la biomasse des microorganismes. Des expérimentations réalisées en laboratoire d’apport de matières organiques (résidus de culture, composts) à des sols limoneux, nous ont permis de confirmer que le rôle de ces apports était essentiellement indirect, par la stimulation des microorganismes du sol que leur décomposition entraîne. Les microorganismes agrégent les particules de sols par leur sécrétions ou mécaniquement. Nous avons proposé un modèle prédictif de la stabilité structurale suite à des apports organiques dont on connaît la qualité biochimique : CANTIS-STAB, qui couple un modèle de décomposition des matières organiques à une fonction statistique. Comme la gestion des matières organiques constitue un volant d’action majeur pour agir sur la sensibilité de sols limoneux à la battance et à l’érosion, les outils proposés doivent être développés, afin de servir de base à des préconisations agronomiques ou à l’apport raisonné de produits résiduaires organiques au sol., Aggregate stability is a major soil physical property, which is a good indicator of the sensitivity of soils to crusting and erosion. Silty soils, which cover large surface areas in France and Northern Europe, have a low aggregate stability, because of their texture and of their frequent low organic matter contents. In the present context of (i) soil organic matter content depletion, (ii) development of organic wastes application to soils and (iii) diversification of cropping systems, it is necessary to have tools to predict changes in soil aggregate stability with changes in soil organic matter content and quality. Using a data base of 480 soils, established during this study, we developed a statistical relationship which relates soil aggregate stability with soil characteristics, in particular with its organic carbon (C) content. However, its low predictive capacity does not allow to use it as a pedotransfer function. Based on 7 in situ long term experiments or cultivated plots series, we found rapid increased of soil aggregate stability when practices that increases the soil C content in the surface layer are implemented (no till, rotations with leys, permanent coverage of soil with plants, repeated compost additions). The total C content of soil was often better correlated to aggregate stability than other organic variables, such as hot water soluble polysaccharides, particulate organic matter contents, or microbial biomass C. Laboratory experiments, in which a wide range of organic materials (crop residues, composts) were added to soil showed that the effect of the organic materials was indirect, through the stimulation of the microbial decomposers, which aggregated the soil. We proposed a new model to simulate the temporal changes in aggregate stability after organic matter additions of given biochemical qualities and in controlled amounts. “CANTIS-STAB” couples a decomposition model with a statistical function. Managing organic matter in soils is a powerful option to decrease the sensitivity of silty cultivated soils to crusting and erosion. The different tools proposed in this program will be developed further, to serve as a basis to optimize agronomic practices and organic wastes addition in this perspective.

Abstract: International audience; To manipulate incomplete, uncertain and hypothetic information about farms, the future evaluation software in the agriculture domain will have to make computations and combine fuzzy numerical values. The approach we propose relies on combination of incomplete, uncertain and hypothetic object values based on particular application of the Dempster-Shafer evidence theory. We then propose the integration of this approach in classic object oriented programming via the implementation of a C++ library.
