We report a rare case of congenital cervical anomaly in a 32 yr old female, who was referred in our department for the complaints of chronic cervical and shoulder pain with a hard cervical mass. Antero-posterior and lateral radiographs of the cervical spine were performed, which show a rib like bony projection, in the left side of neck and on the lateral radiograph, it was corresponding to a hypertrophied C6 spinous process. CT study was done for better delineation of this congenital anomaly, which showed hypertrophied left lamina of C6 and spinous process, crossing midline and towards the left side, extending inferiorly up to the level of thoracic inlet. There was associated fusion of C3 and C4 vertebrae, resulting in block vertebra (Klippel- Feil syndrome Type 1) and unfused spinous process of C6 vertebra.This case report is the first case, where hypertrophied lamina and spinous process of C6 with unfused spinous processes and block vertebra, congenital cervical anomalies were seen in the same patient. Asymmetric hypertrophy of the labia minora is a variant of normal anatomy that has not been described in the pediatric dermatology literature. Although often asymptomatic, in some cases, it can cause functional, emotional, and psychological problems. We report the clinical characteristics and outcomes of four children who presented with unilateral labium minus hypertrophy. This case series aims to establish awareness of this condition among pediatric dermatologists and provide recommendations regarding management.

We report of a 19-year-old man complaining of clumsy gait, drooling of saliva, difficulty in speech, and behavioral changes who underwent ophthalmic examination and was diagnosed with a rare case of Wilson disease: Kayser-Fleischer ring and unilateral hypertrophy of retinal pigment epithelium.

Background Congenital anomalies are commonly encountered in the craniovertebral junction because of its unique embryologic development. The craniovertebral junction usually comprises the occiput, atlas, and axis. However, malrotation of the atlas (C1) in between the occiput (C0) and axis (C2) with Chiari I malformation as well as unilateral hypertrophy of the atlanto-occipital joint and a lateral mass manifesting features of high cervical myelopathy is a rarely reported anomaly. Case Description A 22-year-old woman presented to us with high cervical compressive myelopathy. Imaging revealed rotation of the C1 vertebra approximately 20° toward the left side with right atlanto-occipital joint dislocation and hypertrophy. Imaging also revealed hypertrophy of a right lateral mass of C1, Chiari I malformation, and right atlantoaxial dislocation exposing the right C2 superior facet. She underwent a right extreme far lateral approach comprising a right C1 posterior arch excision and medialization of the right vertebral artery with excision of the hypertrophied atlanto-occipital joint extradurally and posteromedial excision of the superior articular facet of C1. The patient's compressive myelopathy features improved postoperatively. Conclusions We report the successful management of this rare congenital anomaly and review the literature.

Objectives: Muscle hypertrophy is a relatively rare condition that may cause nerve entrapment syndromes. We report the case of a 14-year-old girl with unilateral hypertrophy of the abductor hallucis muscle with entrapment of the medial plantar nerve and review the literature. Methods: Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed unilateral hypertrophy of the abductor hallucis muscle. Results: Two injections of steroid and lidocaine at the point of tenderness resulted in resolution of the pain. Conclusions: We report a rare case of hypertrophy of the abductor hallucis muscle considered with entrapment of the medial plantar nerve. Treatment of this condition should be selected according to the pathological condition of each patient.

We present a case of congenital unilateral hypertrophy of an upper extremity due to aberrant muscles. Reviewing the previous Japanese reports, we discuss the clinical features and the pathogenetic factors of this rare anomaly.

We report the first malagasy case of a 10 years-old child with a Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome. The patient presented with cutaneous hemangioma, varicosities and unilateral hypertrophy of soft tissues of the left hand. Arteriovenous fistula was findings by the echo-doppler. Unilateral hypertrophy of the lateral mass of the atlas is an extremely rare condition. The authors present a rare type of unilateral atlantal mass hypertrophy with atlanto-occipital fusion which is associated with an invaginated lateral mass of the atlas and the odontoid process into the foramen magnum.A 45-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of progressive bilateral weakness in the upper and lower extremities and gait disturbance. The left lateral mass of the atlas was hypertrophied and had invaginated into the foramen magnum with the odontoid. The spinal cord was severely compressed at the level of the foramen magnum, surrounded by the lateral mass of the atlas, the odontoid process and the occipital bone.First, ventral decompression was performed using a transmandibular approach. The anterior arch of the atlas, the medial side of the hypertrophied lateral mass and the odontoid process were resected. Two weeks after primary surgery, posterior occipitocervical fusion was performed. The postoperative course of the patient was uneventful. Three years after the operation, she could walk without assistance and her paresthesia improved.To our knowledge, such a case of unilateral atlantal mass hypertrophy associated with atlanto-occipital fusion has not been described previously. The authors discuss the pathology of this case and review the literature on unilateral atlantal mass hypertrophy and associated anomalies of the upper cervical spine.

An 18-year-old man with unilateral hypertrophy of the masseter muscle is reported. The patient complained of a painless swelling on the left side of the face. On palpation, there was an evident asymmetry of the masseter muscles and remarkable hypertrophy of the left masseter muscle associated with deformity, and lateral deviation of the mandible was revealed by CT scans.The lower and inner portion of the left masseter muscle was resected and the expanded portion of the lateral cortical plate was trimmed away by an intraoral approach. There was no complication except slight paresthesia of the left cheek skin. Postoperative CT scans showed that the asymmetry of the face and the mandible was greatly improved. The patient was satisfied with the result of surgical correction.

To describe the imaging findings in eight cases of unilateral tensor fascia lata (TFL) hypertrophy presenting as soft tissue masses.Imaging studies and medical charts of eight patients were reviewed retrospectively. The imaging studies included five radiographs, five computed tomography (CT) and six magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations.The majority of patients (seven of eight) presented with a palpable proximal anterior thigh mass. One patient was asymptomatic and incidentally diagnosed. There were six females and two males. Ages ranged from 27 to 86 years old (mean 61). MRI and CT showed unilateral enlargement of the TFL muscle in all cases.TFL muscle hypertrophy is an uncommon clinical entity, which can simulate a soft tissue tumor. The characteristic appearance on CT or MRI allows a confident diagnosis of muscle hypertrophy to be made, avoiding unnecessary biopsy or surgical intervention.

Actinomycosis is a slowly progressive infection that can occur anywhere in the body. Three distinct clinical entities are described: cervico-facial, abdomino-pelvic and thoracopulmonary. Actinomyces are anaerobic, gram positive, non-acid-fast, branched filamentous bacteria that form part of the normal oral, colonic and vaginal flora of humans. The cervico-facial form of the disease is commonest and results from direct invasion of commensal oral actinomyces into local tissues. The most frequently isolated species is A. israelii. We describe a case where Actinomycosis caused massive unilateral hypertrophy of the tonsil, mimicking neoplasia. This is an unusual presentation of Actinomycosis.

We encountered a 48-year-old man who had masticationary dysfunction since be had his 67 teeth set in a cast crown about four years ago. There was also a mass located in the left cheek. This mass was diagnosed as benign hypertrophy of the masseter muscle, and the masticationary dysfunction was treated with jointguard, resin temporary crown, permanent crown and bridge. One year and two months after treatment the masticationary dysfunction almost disappeared and the hypertrophy of the left masseter muscle showed shrinking tendency.

A case of unilateral hypertrophy of the palmaris longus muscle in a girl of thirteen is described, associated with "simian" hands and feet and unusually coarse skin of the trunk. Symptoms of median nerve compression were relieved by excision of the muscle.

Unilateral hypertrophy of facial muscles is an uncommon phenomenon with few reported cases in the worldwide literature. The few that have been reported have usually been associated with accompanying disease processes and clinical findings. In this paper, we describe a case of idiopathic hemihypertrophy of facial muscles and the MRI findings which were seen in this case.

A case of a 13-year-old boy who suffered from unilateral hypertrophy of extremities, chest wall and shoulder, and diagnosed as Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber's disease, was reported. The patient terminated in sudden death following rupture of intrasplenic aneurysm. Review of the literature and the entity of this disease were discussed.

Reynafarje's (1963) spectrophotometric method was modified for the study of myoglobin concentration in rat hearts. The influence of age and body weight was evaluated and the age was found to be better correlated with myoglobin concentration than the weight. The influence of simulated altitude of 3500 m was studied in animals exposed to hypoxia at the age of about 34 days and in animals born in the low pressure chamber. In the first group a higher myoglobin concentration was found but only in the right ventricle, together with unilateral hypertrophy, as compared with control animals. In the group of animals born at simulated altitude a severe cardiomegaly developed which was most pronounced in the right ventricle. The myoglobin concentration in the hearts from this group was unchanged in the right ventricle and was lower in the left ventricle and septum.

These cases are reported to swell the scanty volume of literature on the subject of simple masseter hypertrophy, and to bring to our minds one of the rarer causes of unilateral and bilateral swelling in the side of the face in young men and women. Diagnosis is based on the history; on the absence of trismus and pain and tenderness; on the absence of any palpable mass when the muscle is relaxed; and on the firm immovable bulge when the muscle is contracted, with freely movable skin over it. Unless desired for cosmetic reasons there is little justification for any operative procedure. If cosmetic correction is desired, an operation such as that described by Gurney or Adams would be the treatment of choice.

Unilateral hypertrophy of the medullary pyramid apparently developed subsequent to the occurrence of contralateral cerebral damage in the antenatal or perinatal period. Quantitative analysis of this material demonstrates a pyramidal size which is greater than those of reported cases and also a marked increase in the number of both large and small axons, which is at variance with earlier reports in which only an increase in larger fibers was found. The early age of onset may be responsible for this difference in fiber distribution. It is suggested that failure of the damaged pyramid to develop causes a hypertrophic response to occur in the contralateral uncrossed pyramidal tract.

Congenital unilateral hypertrophy of the plantar musculature is a rare condition, and to our knowledge, reports of only 14 cases have been previously published. As only one describes a concomitant orthopedic toe deformity, we report our case of abductor hallucis, flexor digitorum brevis, and abductor digiti minimi muscle hypertrophy in combination with hallux valgus and claw toe deformity as well as a laterally abducted fifth toe. Thus, this report presents the rare case of congenital hypertrophy of the plantar musculature associated with complex toe deformities. Moreover, the present article contains a detailed description of our surgical technique as well as a review of the current literature.

A 22-year-old Caucasian male was referred for evaluation of familial polyposis. During a barium contrast study of his colon, hypertrophy of the pedicles on the right side at T10-T12 and Li was noted. The patient denied symptoms related to his back. Physical and neumologic examinations were normal. There was no evidence of hypentrophy of any soft tissues. Laboratory studies including serum calcium, phosphate, and alkaline phosphatase were within normal limits. Complete spine films and skull films were negative, except for the might-sided hypertrophied pedicles in the lower thomacic and upper lumbar spine (fig. 1). The contralateral pedicles were normal or the same size as the pedicIes above and below the involved area. Serial laminograms in the antemopostemior and lateral projections demonstrated no evidence of a neural arch defect. The right pedicles measured from 0.6 cm to 1 cm larger in all diameters than the left pedicles (fig. 2). Associated hypertrophy of the lamina on the right and narrowing of the neural canal on the right were present (fig. 2C). A total body sw Tc pynophoSphate bone scan and pinhole collimated views over the lower thomacic to upper lumbar spine did not reveal abnormal uptake or discrepancy between the hypertmophied and contralateral normal pedicles.

Parotid gland hypertrophy, usually bilateral, is associated with a number of altered metabolic states. Occasionally unilateral hypertrophy occurs, suggesting parotid neoplasia. Because of increased lipid material within the hypertrophied gland, computed tomographic (CT) scanning may suggest the diagnosis, obviating surgery. Sialographic and CT appearances of parotid hypertrophy and the relationship between it and parotid lipoma are discussed.

The question of bilateral asymmetry of the human body has been the subject of numerous investigations and researches on the part of anatomists, anthropologists and archeologists of the past century. As a result of exact measurements taken from a great number of cadavers and living subjects, it has been established that the two halves of the body in the human species, as well as in the higher vertebrates, are in reality never symmetrical. This fact being established, a more detailed study of various asymmetries followed. Meckel 1 was the first anatomist to treat the subject in a scientific manner. Various asymmetries and their physiologic significance were exhaustively treated by von Bardeleben 2 in a paper presented by him before the Anatomische Gesellschaft in 1909. A French investigator, Richard Liebreich, 3 made a most painstaking study of skulls and faces of various races and various periods. In contradistinction to the well-known

Reports of total unilateral hypertrophy or hemihypertrophy are comparatively rare in medical literature. The earliest case was reported by Wagner, in Germany, in 1839; in 1879, Osler gave the number of reported cases of congenital hemihypertrophy as twelve. Gesell, in 1921, made a careful search of the literature and collected forty cases, which included one of his own. In 1927, he was able to add thirteen to this number, making a total of fifty-three cases. Wiseberg and Halperin each reported a case in 1931. The present case is reported for two reasons: (1) because it presents an unusual anatomic anomaly, congenital in origin and (2) because the comparative rarity of the condition makes it seem worth while to add another case to the few recorded.
