Transmission lines are susceptible to a variety of phenomena that can cause system faults. The most prevalent cause of faults in the power system is lightning strikes, while other causes may include insulator failure, tree or crane encroachment. In this study, two machine learning algorithms, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN), were used and compared to classify faults due to lightning strikes, insulator failure, tree and crane encroachment. The input variables for the models were based on the root mean square (RMS) current duration, voltage dip, and energy wavelet measured at the sending end of a line. The proposed method was implemented in the MATLAB/SIMULINK programming platform. The classification performance of the developed algorithms was evaluated using confusion matrix. Overall, SVM algorithm performed better than k-NN in terms of classification accuracy, achieving a value of 97.10% compared to k-NN’s 70.60%. Moreover, SVM also outperformed k-NN in terms of computational time, with time taken by SVM is 3.63 s compared to 10.06 s by k-NN.

This study evaluates several tower earthing designs for improving 500 kV transmission line’s lightning performance and ensure its continuous operation. The study includes the assessment of the soil profile and a comparison of the findings obtained using the default and new earthing arrangement, both of which are intended to improve the tower footing resistance (TFR-during steady-state) and tower footing impedance (TFI-during lightning). Assessment of the TFR and TFI has been performed before and after the earthing design improvement. In addition, the impacts of these TFR and TFI, which are also defined as low and high-frequency earthing, respectively, relying on a specification of TFR and soil resistivity (SR) ranges at different locations have also been taken into consideration. The study was performed with the help of the SESCAD tool of Current Distribution Electromagnetic Field Grounding and Soil Structure Analysis program (CDEGS), as well as the PSCAD/EMTDC software, which was used for low and high frequency earthing, accordingly. Upon the completion of the investigation, the findings revealed that the modification to the earthing arrangement had a beneficial effect on lowering the TFR by 84.29 % and 88.34 % for Towers T41 and T42, respectively. While for TFI, the results revealed a significant decrease below the TFR during high frequency operation, which was attributed to soil ionization process that occur due to lightning. This was proved by the fact that the values were significantly below the TFR. All these enhancements are now being explored and evaluated across all of Malaysia’s 500 kV networks, where lightning is regarded to be the primary risk factor for power outages.

The demand for composite materials in high-voltage electrical insulation is escalating over the last decades. In the power system, the composite glass-fiber-reinforced polymer has been used as an alternative to wood and steel crossarm structures due to its superior properties. As a composite, the material is susceptible to multi-aging factors, one of which is the electrical stress caused by continuous and temporary overvoltage. In order to achieve a better insulation performance and higher life expectancy, the distribution of the stresses should firstly be studied and understood. This paper focuses on the simulation work to better understand the stress distribution of the polyurethane foam-filled glass-fiber-reinforced polymer crossarm due to the lightning transient injection. A finite-element-based simulation was carried out to investigate the behavior of the electric field and voltage distribution across the sample using an Ansys Maxwell 3D. Electrical stresses at both outer and inner surfaces of the crossarm during the peak of lightning were analyzed. Analyses on the electric field and potential distribution were performed at different parts of the crossarm and correlated to the physical characteristics and common discharge location observed during the experiment. The results of the electric field on the crossarm indicate that both the outer and internal parts of the crossarm were prone to high field stress.

Commercial grid-connected rooftop solar PV systems are widely applied worldwide as part of affordable and clean energy initiatives and viable long-term solutions for energy security. This is particularly true in a crowded city where space is a constraint and at the same time, there are unutilized rooftops. With the recently announced Net Energy Metering (NEM) 3.0, commercial buildings in Malaysia can apply up to 75% capacity of the maximum demand (MD), which can be connected to the grid. Apart from reducing electricity bills, the owner can offset energy for 10 years. This paper presents a design analysis with the details of the sizing of a rooftop PV system. The PVsyst software tool is used to estimate the energy produced by a 380 kWp system, and this study provides a financial analysis to evaluate the profitability of the system with a particular interest in commercial buildings under the NEM 3.0 policy, which has resulted in 8.4 years return of investment (ROI). PVsyst is a software used to size the PV system and provides technical, financial, and environmental analysis. This in-depth analysis could provide a useful case study for asset owners in deciding the way forward for sustainable energy production, cost saving, and combating the energy security issue, since Malaysia is blessed with an abundance of sunshine throughout the year.

The concept of bearingless motors, which combine both motoring and rotor bearing capabilities, is appealing especially in high speed and high power machine applications. Although extensive research has been carried out on permanent magnet and reluctance types of bearingless motors, studies on the induction motor type are less successful. This thesis addresses the bearingless induction motor based on the concept of dual-pole windings, one controlling the motor torque and the other the generated radial forces. A modelling approach is undertaken to investigate the effect of induction machine design on radial force generation and motor levitation under both steady state and transient conditions. The simulation is based on the dynamic reluctance mesh model embedded in vector control systems for the decoupled control of torque, flux and radial force. This is achieved through modification of a previously developed computer software for modelling induction motors in order to model the control of bearingless induction motors. Both the squirrel cage and wound rotor induction motors are investigated and their suitability for generating controlled bearing relief forces assessed. Vector control schemes for the bearingless cage and wound rotor induction motors were also designed and simulated. A mixed field oriented vector control scheme, which incorporates the simple rotor field orientation for motoring control and an airgap field orientation for rotor levitation control, is introduced and found to be advantageous in bearingless induction motor control. Apart from investigating totally bearingless conditions, the study also investigates bearing relief capabilities for a vector controlled cage and wound rotor induction motor in which the rotor movement is restricted by bearings but with the bearing load cancelled by suitably directed radial force.
