The aim of this pamphlet is to make secondary school students aware of the interdependence of peoples throughout the world and of their own responsibility to the world at large. The pamphlet is written from a Christian and a socioeconomic perspective. The text is arranged into the following broad areas of continuing world problems: the Third World, population, food, poverty, refugees, race, resources, and "one world." It is recommended that these sections be used with a map or globe, and that they be supported by additional materials from current newspapers, magazines, and television documentaries. Each section is divided into subtopics, which are often presented in question-answer format. Maps and graphs accompany the text, and several sections are followed by assignment suggestions relating to the topic, or by illustrative quotations from the Bible and other sources. A list of organizations where students may obtain additional information and a brief syllabus of suggested readings for both teachers and students are also provided. (Author/MK)

This booklet is designed to help British teachers introduce concepts of waste to secondary school students. The document focuses on various types of waste and pollution--air, land, water, and industrial--and suggests activities to help students understand and combat waste of natural and human resources. It is presented in 11 chapters. Six chapters deal with waste of specific resources, including water, land, forests, oil, metals, and glass. Two chapters provide general background information on waste and pollution in modern society and offer projections regarding the quality of life of future generations. One chapter examines pollution resulting from improper waste disposal. Another chapter discusses how technology can be used to develop natural power and energy. The final chapter lists resources used in preparing the publication. Each chapter includes a list of learning activities. Students are involved in surveying packaging practices of local supermarkets, visiting waste disposal works, interviewing community members regarding use of aerosol products, visiting reference libraries, analyzing sources of power, and recycling broken glass and aluminum cans. Published for secondary school youth in England, the PROBE series presents provocative information and discussion questions on topical themes. The focus of this issue is on aspects of medicine which raise moral dilemmas for doctors, patients, and society in general. This issue contains case studies which illustrate ethical questions raised by the changing role of medicine in society. For each case study, a review of medical practice and issues is followed by discussion questions for students. Legalization of abortions under special circumstances has prompted debate over the status of the fetus and a mother's rights to terminate a pregnancy. Practices of artificial insemination by donor raise questions concerning the donor's right to maintain interest in his child, the mother's motivation, and the "social father's" ability to accept as his own a child whom he did not father. Research on embryo transfers prompts concerns about political manipulation of the process if it is perfected in humans. Issues about euthanasia include a person's right to die with dignity and who has the right to decide if a patient should die. Organ transplants can be life-savers for critically ill people, but when too few donors exist, who should decide which patients will receive donated organs? A concluding section reviews critical questions such as how the interests of the individual relate to those of society, and how medicine should progress. (AV)
