Time-varying underwater acoustic (UWA) channels are the key challenge of underwater acoustic communication (UAC). Although UAC exhibits time-variance characteristics significantly in time domains, its delay-Doppler (DD) domain representation tends to be time-invariant. Orthogonal time–frequency space (OTFS) modulation has recently been proposed and has acquired widespread interest due to its excellent performance over time-varying channels. In the UWA OTFS system, the novel DD domain channel estimation algorithm that employs a multidirectional adaptive moving average scheme is proposed. Specifically, the proposed scheme is cascaded by a channel estimator and moving average filter. The channel estimator can be employed to estimate the time-invariant channel of the DD domain multidirectionally, improving proportionate normalized least mean squares (IPNLMS). Meanwhile, the moving average filter is used to reduce the output noise of the IPNLMS. The performance of the proposed method is verified by simulation experiments and real-world lake experiments. Autonomous underwater vehicles are increasingly frequently used in the fields of ocean observation, data collection, and tactical surveillance. Underwater navigation and near real-time communication are the most important factors limiting the performance of these vehicles. In this article, an underwater acoustic communication and positioning system (UACPS) based on heterogeneous gliders is presented. The system consists of an acoustic wave glider and an acoustic underwater glider, and includes an ultrashort baseline and an acoustic modem. The program and communication protocol of the communication and positioning algorithm are independently developed, and the hardware circuit design of the communication and ultra-short baseline positioning, as well as the embedded surface wave gliders and gliders are independently implemented. Sea trial results indicate that the communication distance of the system is more than 3 km and the positioning error is less than 5%. With the further improvement of system performance, the low cost, long time, long distance and near real-time communication characteristics of our UACPS can be used to integrate multiple autonomous unmanned platforms as part of intelligent surveillance robot networks. Featured Application: The work may find applications in secure coordination and self-management of groups of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). We consider authenticating multicast messages in the case of extremely narrow communication channels, such as underwater acoustic communication, with devices such as mobile sensors creating a self-organizing autonomous network. Channel characteristics in this scenario prevent the application of digital signatures (and asymmetric cryptography in general), as it would consume too much of the available bandwidth. As communication is relatively sparse, standard symmetric methods such as TESLA have limited application in this scenario as well. Driven by real-world requirements, we focus on tiny networks of only a few nodes. This paper discusses two issues: (a) strategies of key predistribution enabling flexible creation of multicast groups; (b) authenticating multicast messages in a way that prevents an attacker impersonating the sender by subverting one or more receiver nodes and learning the symmetric keys stored by these nodes. For tiny networks, we show that scalable and asymptotically efficient solutions might be useless, and that specially tailored combinatorial approaches may confer some advantage. This paper presents Z-OFDM, a high-performance solution for underwater acoustic communication. Traditional underwater orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems suffer from spectrum leakage and distortion due to the narrowband nature of underwater acoustic signals and the picket fence effect of the fast Fourier transform (FFT). Z-OFDM addresses these issues by integrating zoom-fast Fourier transform (ZoomFFT) with OFDM and redesigning the modulator and demodulator to replace the conventional FFT. This integration enhances spectral resolution, resulting in higher channel capacity, improved Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR), and reduced Bit Error Rate (BER). Computer simulations using underwater acoustic channels from Fuxian Lake and Wuyuan Bay demonstrate that the Z-OFDM system achieves a 6 dB gain compared to conventional OFDM systems at a BER of 10 − 3 . Ocean observation has advanced rapidly in recent decades due to its crucial role in resource exploration and scientific research, with the Doppler factor being widely utilized. However, the precision of Doppler estimation is frequently constrained by frequency resolution. Traditional frequency estimation methods using single-tone signals face considerable challenges with low accuracy and poor robustness. In response, this paper introduces a novel Doppler-sensitive Acoustic Frequency Comb (AFC) for estimating the Doppler factor, enabling multiple measurements with a single transmission and reception of the signal. The proposed Combined Uneven Uncertainty (CUU) method based on AFC achieves a bias of less than 1.1x10-5, significantly surpassing the optimal result of 3.2x10-5 attained by other frequency estimation methods in the absence of noise. Compared to traditional single-tonemethods, the AFC approach improves spectral leakage performance and enhances estimation accuracy without increasing computational complexity. Experimental results demonstrate that the CUU method realizes a difference performance of less than 3.4x10-6, notably lower than that of 3.2x10-5 induced by coherent spectral leakage in fast Fourier Transform (FFT). This paper considers an asynchronous grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems which can be applied in massive machine-type communications (mMTCs) and underwater IoT acoustic communication scenarios due to its high spectral efficiency and low power consumption characteristics. In particular, the system's asynchronous reception of user signals can effectively reduce the additional overhead caused by synchronous reception. We investigate the joint activity and channel estimation in the asynchronous case, where an asynchronous frame structure is considered, and a pilot sequence designed by chaotic sequence is used to reduce the pilot storage space. The joint estimations are formulated as single measurement vector (SMV) and multiple measurement vector (MMV) problems for single-antenna and multiple-antenna systems. Different from the existing estimation algorithms, where prior information is considered for estimation, an adaptive alternating direction method of multiplier (ADMM)is proposed for the SMV problem and a two-stage ADMM is proposed for the MMV problem. In particular, an index set is first estimated in each iteration of our proposed adaptive ADMM, and a linear ADMM is performed based on the index set. The first stage of our proposed two-stage ADMM is to estimate the delay and the activity, and then the channel state information is estimated. Further, we analyze the complexity of the two algorithms and their sensitivity to the initial values of chaotic sequences. Finally, simulation results reflecting the detection performance of the algorithms are given. Based on the simulation results, the proposed two algorithms are computationally efficient, providing superior signal recovery accuracy and user activity detection performance. Due to the lack of sufficient valid labeled data and severe channel fading, the recognition of various underwater acoustic (UWA) communication modulation types still faces significant challenges. In this paper, we propose a lightweight UWA communication type recognition network based on semi-supervised learning, named the SSL-LRN. In the SSL-LRN, a mean teacher–student mechanism is developed to improve learning performance by averaging the weights of multiple models, thereby improving recognition accuracy for insufficiently labeled data. The SSL-LRN employs techniques such as quantization and small convolutional kernels to reduce floating-point operations (FLOPs), enabling its deployment on underwater mobile nodes. To mitigate the performance loss caused by quantization, the SSL-LRN adopts a channel expansion module to optimize the neuron distribution. It also employs an attention mechanism to enhance the recognition robustness for frequency-selective-fading channels. Pool and lake experiments demonstrate that the framework effectively recognizes most modulation types, achieving a more than 5% increase in recognition accuracy at a 0 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNRs) while reducing FLOPs by 84.9% compared with baseline algorithms. A wideband Doppler Effect is a significant challenge for underwater acoustic communications (UAC). This paper proposes a new two-stage structure of direct adaptive multi-resampling turbo equalizer (DAM-TEQ) for solving the problem of large timescale errors in time-varying channels, which uses an innovative adaptive time-domain resampling method for Doppler estimation and compensation. In this equalizer, the received signal is first fed into the first-stage structure, in which an adaptive resampling is performed using equalization coefficient detection to achieve a Doppler rough estimation. After the processing is completed, it is fed into the second-stage structure for joint equalization and decoding, effectively reducing the error of information transmission. Compared with the conventional turbo equalizer (TEQ) based on timescale estimation, the proposed equalizer can avoid the problem of the Doppler Effect not being accurately estimated in time-varying channels, with only a slight increase in complexity. Simulations and lake trails show that the equalizer can effectively perform a Doppler estimation and compensation in time-varying channels, and has a better bit error rate (BER) performance than the traditional timescale-based TEQ. In general, CNN gives the same weight to all position information, which will limit the expression ability of the model. Distinguishing modulation types that are significantly affected by the underwater environment becomes nearly impossible. The transformer attention mechanism is used for the feature aggregation, which can adaptively adjust the weight of feature aggregation according to the relationship between the underwater acoustic signal sequence and the location information. In this paper, a novel aggregation network is designed for the task of automatic modulation identification (AMI) in underwater acoustic communication. It is feasible to integrate the advantages of both CNN and transformer into a single streamlined network, which is productive and fast for signal feature extraction. The transformer overcomes the constraints of sequential signal input, establishing parallel connections between different modulations. Its attention mechanism enhances the modulation recognition by prioritizing the key information. Within the transformer network, the proposed network is strategically incorporated to form a spatial–temporal structure. This structure contributes to improved classification results, and it can obtain more deep features of underwater acoustic signals, particularly at lower signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Utilizing hydrophone arrays for detecting underwater acoustic communication (UWAC) signals leverages spatial information to enhance detection efficiency and expand the perceptual range. This study redefines the task of UWAC signal detection as an object detection problem within the frequency–azimuth (FRAZ) spectrum. Employing Faster R-CNN as a signal detector, the proposed method facilitates the joint prediction of UWAC signals, including estimates of the number of sources, modulation type, frequency band, and direction of arrival (DOA). The proposed method extracts precise frequency and DOA features of the signals without requiring prior knowledge of the number of signals or frequency bands. Instead, it extracts these features jointly during training and applies them to perform joint predictions during testing. Numerical studies demonstrate that the proposed method consistently outperforms existing techniques across all signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), particularly excelling in low SNRs. It achieves a detection F1 score of 0.96 at an SNR of −15 dB. We further verified its performance under varying modulation types, numbers of sources, grating lobe interference, strong signal interference, and array structure parameters. Furthermore, the practicality and robustness of our approach were evaluated in lake-based UWAC experiments, and the model trained solely on simulated signals performed competitively in the trials. The multimode underwater acoustic communication network is a novel form of underwater acoustic communication that adjusts its communication mode to enhance overall performance. Current performance analysis methods are primarily applied to single-mode networks and assume uniform communication capability across all nodes, making them unsuitable for multimode networks. This paper investigates the multimode communication of the physical layer, considering factors such as the marine environment, the node transmitting sound source level, and the transmitting distance. A decoding conflict model is proposed to support multimode concurrent transmission scenarios. The communication mode is designed to be compatible with the channel and node characteristics. Additionally, using a Markov decision process, this paper establishes a performance evaluation and analysis model for multimode underwater acoustic networks to determine throughput performance limits in real underwater environments. Simulations across various scenarios validate that the throughput performance limits obtained by this method are more accurate under multimode networks, with an improvement in accuracy of over 67.5% compared to existing methods. Spread spectrum technology has been widely employed for positioning and communicating with autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), but conventional spread spectrum sequences lack confidentiality and reliability in UWA channel. Considering the limitations of conventional sequences and the characteristics of underwater acoustic (UWA) channel, a composite chaotic orthogonal sequence (CCOS) based on the UWA channel is proposed. The confidentiality of the CCOS is superior to that of the m‐sequence, while the autocorrelation performance of the CCOS is superior to that of the orthogonal sequence. Moreover, the CCOS can compensate for the imbalance of logistic chaotic sequence when assigned certain initial values. Acquisition is a crucial component of accessing the spread spectrum signal; therefore, the acquisition performance indicates the applicability of the CCOS. The source–target model is established to simulate communication with an underwater moving target. To simulate the acquisition process, a parallel algorithm based on fast Fourier transform is adopted, and the entire simulation process is completed based on the BELLHOP ray acoustic model. Through data processing, the Doppler shift error is less than half of the frequency‐search element. We address the challenge of adaptable long-range underwater acoustic communications. Applications include defence, emergency response, environmental monitoring, and search and rescue. We have developed a communication system aiming to achieve long rage communications in the harsh conditions of the Canadian Arctic. We use low-frequency underwater acoustic waves that have the potential for long-range communications. Underwater propagation conditions can vary considerably. We define protocol elements for adaptable underwater communications. They comprise six frame formats with a wide range of robustness concerning underwater communication conditions. We vary the interval of symbols of 4-tone Frequency-Shift Keying modulation from one design to another. This has the effect of increasing the SNR. Hence, the ability to operate in less favourable conditions. We have simulation results. Moreover, we have obtained sea trial results. Underwater acoustic communication signals suffer from time dispersion due to time-varying multipath propagation in the ocean. This leads to intersymbol interference, which in turn degrades the performance of the communication system. Typically, the channel correlation functions are employed to describe these characteristics. In this paper, a metric called the channel average correlation coefficient (CACC) is proposed from the correlation function to quantify the time-varying characteristics. It has a theoretical negative relationship with communication performance. Comparative analysis involving simulations and experimental data processing highlights the superior effectiveness of CACC over the traditional metric, the channel coherence time. The distribution of ocean sound speed profiles (SSPs) profoundly influences the design of underwater acoustic communication and positioning systems. Conventional methods for measuring sound speed by instruments entail high time costs, while sound speed inversion methods offer rapid estimation of SSPs. However, these methods heavily rely on sonar observational data and lack the capacity to swiftly estimate SSPs in arbitrary oceanic regions, particularly in scenarios with few-shot data. Precisely estimating non-cooperative maritime SSPs under such conditions poses a significant challenge. To explore temporal distribution patterns of sound speed and achieve precise SSP predictions with limited data, we propose a hierarchical long short-term memory transfer learning (H-LSTM-TL) framework. The core idea involves pre-training the base model on extensive public datasets, transferring the acquired knowledge to task models, and fine-tuning the task model on few-shot data to predict future SSPs. Through H-LSTM-TL, it accelerates model convergence, enhances sensitivity to few-shot input data, alleviates overfitting issues, and notably improves the accuracy of SSP predictions. Experimental results demonstrate that the H-LSTM-TL model exhibits strong generalization capabilities in few-shot data scenarios, effectively reducing overfitting problems and proving its applicability for rapid prediction of SSPs. In this paper, a double-layer acoustic metasurface (DAM) composed of a fixed lower acoustic metasurface (LAM) and a rotatable upper acoustic metasurface (UAM) is proposed for the generation of mode-reconfigurable acoustic orbital angular momentum (OAM). The UAM and LAM are divided into multiple sections, in which the hybrid structures combining cascaded Helmholtz resonators and a straight pipe are adopted to achieve specific phase compensation. By rotating the UAM, the incident acoustic plane wave can be efficiently converted into the vortex acoustic waves of reconfigurable topological charges ranging from −5 to +5 with distinguishable purity. Furthermore, the influences of the parameters on the purity of the generated topological charges have been investigated and discussed, such as the distance between LAM and UAM, rotatable angle error, and operating frequency. With the capability of reconfigurable OAM modes, the proposed DAM can be used to efficiently increase capacity or to conveniently switch between different channels in underwater vortex acoustic communications. This paper proposes a channel response generative adversarial network (CRGAN)-based turbo code interleaver that estimates a channel response and interleaver indices at a transmitter by using a sound speed profile (SSP) and the ocean environments without feedback from a receiver. The interleaver indices are designed to allocate important bits from the turbo code to subcarriers with great channel gains, which reduces them from being affected by deep fading. Computer simulations and practical ocean experiments demonstrate that the proposed method estimates the channel response with low mean squared errors (MSEs) and improves bit error rate (BER) performances compared with the conventional method.

Underwater wireless communication (UWC) equipment facilitates information transmission and data exchange in underwater environments, playing vital roles in marine scientific research, underwater network monitoring, underwater collaborative operation, and marine safety maintenance. This study explores four primary UWC equipment categories: underwater acoustic communication, underwater optical communication, underwater electromagnetic communication, and underwater magnetic induction communication. It conducts in-depth analyses of the technical challenges associated with each category, comprehensively reviews their development status in China and abroad, and forecasts future trends. Focusing on the UWC industry of China, we summarize the development challenges in terms of overarching gaps, common issues, and top-level system, and propose the following development suggestions: (1) improving fundamental mechanisms and addressing common issues, (2) prioritizing breakthroughs in industry core areas, (3) elucidating the top-level system structure of the UWC equipment, and (4) enhancing safeguard measures and support policies. This study is expected to provide references for understanding the developmental trend and promoting the research and application of the UWC equipment.

The development of underwater acoustic networks is a significant expansion of Internet-of-Things technology to underwater environments. These networks are essential for a variety of marine applications. For many practical uses, it is more efficient to collect marine data from a remote location over multiple hops, rather than direct point-to-point communications. In this article, we will focus on the underwater acoustic string network (UA-SN) designed for this type of application. We propose a Robust and Adaptive Pipeline Medium Access Control (RAP-MAC) protocol to enhance the network's transmission efficiency, adaptability, and robustness. The protocol includes a scheduling-based concurrent algorithm, online real-time configuration adjustment function, a rate mode adaptive algorithm, and a fault recovery algorithm. We conducted simulations to compare the new protocol with another representative protocol, validating the RAP-MAC protocol's adaptability and fault recovery ability. Additionally, we carried out two large-scale sea trials. The results of these experiments indicate that the RAP-MAC protocol ensures effectiveness and reliability in large-scale multihop UA-SNs. In the South China Sea, we were able to achieve a communication distance of 87 km with a throughput of 601.6 bps, exceeding the recognized upper bound of underwater acoustic communication experiment performance by 40 km·kbps. Underwater communication is one of the most important and difficult challenges facing researchers due to the high attenuation of the signal, communication with the surface because of the harsh medium of water, and data transmission performance degradation as a result of various effects. Underwater acoustic communication (UWA) has a low data rate, which describes the disadvantage of this type of communication. In addition, it has a low bandwidth range and high latency but has a long transmission range as an advantage. Multicarrier wireless transmission systems increase the data rate by sending the data using more than one carrier. We proposed a noncoherent orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) method to increase the data rate in UWA communication systems. In addition, doubling the data rate in the OFDM using Subcarrier Power Modulation (OFDM-SPM) system can save half of the bandwidth. The MATLAB simulation program was used to implement the system in the underwater acoustic environment to increase its throughput. The proposed design uses Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK) with power control, and the data stream is transmitted through two-dimensional modulation schemes, the DPSK, and the power level of each subcarrier in the OFDM system with cyclic prefix (CP). The underwater channel was designed using a Rician fading multipath with a spreading loss formula as a function of distance and frequency. We designed an equalizer at the receiver side to recover the original signal as a function of three parameters which are: the channel effect as a rate between transmitting and receiving symbols, the Rician channel response, and the UWA spreading loss. OFDM-Subcarrier Power Modulation (OFDM-SPM) using the proposed equalizer performed better than the theoretical OFDM-SPM in the Rayleigh channel. The designed equalizer increased the performance of the OFDM-SPM system by 25% which helped to enhance the system's throughput and doubled the data rate compared with the OFDM system, doubling the data rate using OFDM-SPM had been validated in laboratory experiments in the Time domain. This paper investigates the impact of mobility on underwater acoustic communication networks in which the propagation delay is comparable to or larger than the packet duration. An underwater acoustic wireless network, consisting of static and mobile nodes, is studied for its link-layer channel utilization. Synchronous and asynchronous media access control (MAC) protocols are employed with ALOHA, TDMA (time-division multiple access), and artificial intelligence (AI) agent nodes. The simulation results of a multi-node network show that the asynchronous MAC protocols achieve up to 6.66× higher channel utilization than synchronous protocols by allowing time slots to be shorter than the maximum propagation delay among nodes and permitting asynchronous transmission time. The high mobility of a few mobile nodes also favors asynchronous protocols and increases the overall channel utilization. However, node mobility causes more difficulties for the AI node to learn the environment, which may be ineffective to achieve higher gains in channel utilization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Freshwater turtles exhibit temporary threshold shifts (TTS) when exposed to broadband sound, but whether frequency-restricted narrowband noise induces TTS was unknown. Underwater TTS was investigated in two freshwater turtle species (Emydidae) following exposures to 1 6 -octave narrowband noise (155–172 dB re 1 μPa2 s). While shifts occurred in all turtles at the noise center frequency (400 Hz), there were more instances of TTS and greater shift magnitudes at 1 2 octave above the center frequency, despite considerably lower received levels. This Letter proposes a low-complexity joint equalization and decoding reception scheme based on super-trellis per-survivor processing, making it possible to apply maximum likelihood sequence estimation in high-order underwater acoustic communications under fast time-varying channels. The technique combines trellis-coded modulation states and intersymbol interference states and uses per-survivor processing to track channel parameters. Furthermore, a general trellis configuration for arbitrary order quadrature amplitude modulation signal is provided when truncate the channel is used to describe the intersymbol interference state to 1. In medium- and short-range underwater application scenarios, thanks to the superior performance in transmission bandwidth, link latency, and security, underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is growing to be a promising complement to the mature underwater acoustic communication technique. In order to extend the future 6G Internet of Things (IOT) to various challenging and valuable underwater scenarios, the underwater spatial coverage and transmission performance has been actively discussed in typical seawater environments. However, almost all current works focus on underwater scenarios including light-emitting diode (LED) transmitters with well-known Lambertian optical beams and fail to characterize the scenarios adopting LED transmitters with distinctive non-Lambertian beam patterns. For addressing this limitation, in this article, the coverage performance of non-Lambertian UWOC for 6G is analyzed and illustrated. Furthermore, the switchable optical beam configuration scheme is proposed and estimated for UWOC. Numerical results illustrate that, compared with about 15.42 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) fluctuation amplitude for UWOC with baseline Lambertian optical beam configuration, the corresponding SNR fluctuation amplitudes of UWOC based with two typical non-Lambertian optical beams are 8.71 dB and 24.60 dB. Furthermore, once the receiver depth is increased to 6.0 m, the SNR fluctuation amplitude for the above three UWOC coverage with distinct beam configuration could be reduced to 5.61 dB, 1.58 dB, and 10.33 dB, respectively. In this work, the performance of coded continuous phase modulation (CPM) transceivers for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) in underwater acoustic channels is evaluated. The proposed technique employs the Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH) class of cyclic codes, and a CPM-based mapper is being used in place of a traditional OFDM mapper. Bit-error-rates (BERs) for various distances are evaluated. We use the Bellhop acoustic channel simulator that is considered to be very close to a real underwater channel. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated for 23 values of the CPM modulation index h as a function of the distance between the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx). Based upon the error performance, we identified several best-performing CPM indices. We also observed that for Tx–Rx distances of 100 and 250 m, the proposed system gives acceptable performance without the need for equalization. We also compared the out-of-band radiation of the proposed system with PSK-OFDM and observed that the uncoded CPM-OFDM has a better out-of-band (OOB) performance than the traditional OFDM. The underwater acoustic (UWA) channel causes large propagation delays and reduces the bit error rate (BER) of wireless communication systems. The t-distribution is the optimal distribution to perform UWA noise. In this study, polar-coded differential chaos shift keying (DCSK) and quadrature chaos shift keying (QCSK) communication with UWA noise are considered. First, we have proposed a PDF for the UWA noise channel, and based on this PDF, the theoretical BER is derived. Second, polar coding's performance is determined to demonstrate the improvement in the BER performance compared to the uncoded UWA system by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The experimental results prove that the nearest model that is applicable to the UWA channel is a t-distribution with five and six degrees of freedom. The BER formulas of the proposed systems are derived and compared with the simulation results. Addressing the challenges of high decoding latency, reduced spectral efficiency, and substantial storage requirements in a Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC)Aided Successive Cancellation List (CA-SCL) polar decoder, this paper proposes a chaotic phase modulation direct-sequence spread spectrum (CPMDSSS)-assisted adaptive serial cancellation list decoding method for underwater acoustic communication. The method involves segmenting the information bits to be transmitted, computing CRC for each segment, and mapping all CRCs to a CPMDSSS, which is then modulated onto the pilot subcarriers of underwater acoustic orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) to increase spectral efficiency. At the receiving end, CRCs are obtained by demodulating the CPMDSSS to verify the segmented information and adaptively select the number of decoding paths. The theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that compared to CA-SCL, the proposed method effectively reduces the required storage units and improves spectral efficiency, with an average reduction of approximately 80% in the decoding paths. Sea trials further indicate that the proposed method reduces the average decoding paths by approximately 71% and decreases the average decoding delay by approximately 64% compared to CA-SCL. Recent advancements in marine technology have highlighted the urgent need for enhanced underwater acoustic applications, from sonar detection to communication and noise cancellation, driving the pursuit of innovative transducer technologies. In this paper, a new underwater thermoacoustic (TA) transducer made from carbon nanotube (CNT) sponge is designed to achieve wide bandwidth, high energy conversion efficiency, simple structure, good transient response, and stable sound response, utilizing the TA effect through electro-thermal modulation. The transducer has potential application in underwater acoustic communication. An electro-thermal-acoustic coupled simulation for the open model, sandwich model, and encapsulated model is presented to analyze the transient behaviors of CNT sponge TA transducers in liquid environments. The effects of key design parameters on the acoustic performances of both systems are revealed. The results demonstrate that a short pulse excitation with a low duty cycle could greatly improve the heat dissipation of the encapsulated transducer, especially when the thermoacoustic response time becomes comparable to thermal relaxation time. Orthogonal chirp division multiplexing (OCDM) offers a promising modulation technology for shallow water underwater acoustic (UWA) communication systems due to multipath fading resistance and Doppler resistance. To handle the various channel distortions and interferences, obtaining accurate channel state information is vital for robust and efficient shallow water UWA communication. In recent years, deep learning has attracted widespread attention in the communication field, providing a new way to improve the performance of physical layer communication systems. In this paper, the pilot-based channel estimation is transformed into a matrix completion problem, which is mathematically equivalent to the image super-resolution problem arising in the field of image processing. Simulation results show that the deep learning-based method can improve the channel distortion, outperforming the equalization performed by traditional estimator, the performance of Bit Error Rate is improved by 2.5 dB compared to the MMSE method in OCDM system. At the 7.5 to 20 dB region, it achieves better bit error rate performance than OFDM systems, and the bit error rate is reduced by approximately 53% compared to OFDM when the SNR value is 20, which is very useful in shallow water UWA channels with multipath extension and severe time-varying characteristics. Purpose: Human-induced marine environmental noise, such as commercial shipping and seismic exploration, is concentrated in the low-frequency range. Meanwhile, low-frequency sound signals can achieve long-distance propagation in water. To meet the requirements of long-distance underwater detection and communication, this paper aims to propose an micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) flexible conformal hydrophone for low-frequency underwater acoustic signals. The substrate of the proposed hydrophone is polyimide, with silicon as the piezoresistive unit. Design/methodology/approach: This paper proposes a MEMS heterojunction integration process for preparing flexible conformal hydrophones. In addition, sensors prepared based on this process are non-contact flexible sensors that can detect weak signals or small deformations. Findings: The experimental results indicate that making devices with this process cannot only achieve heterogeneous integration of silicon film, metal wire and polyimide, but also allow for customized positions of the silicon film as needed. The success rate of silicon film transfer printing is over 95%. When a stress of 1 Pa is applied on the x-axis or y-axis, the maximum stress on Si as a pie-zoresistive material is above, and the average stress on the Si film is around. Underwater acoustic (UWA) channel prediction technology, as an important topic in UWA communication, has played an important role in UWA adaptive communication network and underwater target perception. Although many significant advancements have been achieved in underwater acoustic channel prediction over the years, a comprehensive summary and introduction is still lacking. As the first comprehensive overview of UWA channel prediction, this paper introduces past works and algorithm implementation methods of channel prediction from the perspective of linear, kernel-based, and deep learning approaches. Importantly, based on available at-sea experiment datasets, this paper compares the performance of current primary UWA channel prediction algorithms under a unified system framework, providing researchers with a comprehensive and objective understanding of UWA channel prediction. Finally, it discusses the directions and challenges for future research. The survey finds that linear prediction algorithms are the most widely applied, and deep learning, as the most advanced type of algorithm, has moved this field into a new stage. The experimental results show that the linear algorithms have the lowest computational complexity, and when the training samples are sufficient, deep learning algorithms have the best prediction performance. Recently, acoustic communication employing orbital angular momentum (OAM) opens another avenue for efficient data transmission in aquatic environments. Current topological charge (TC) detection of OAM beams relies on the orthogonality among different-order OAM beams. However, such strategy requires measurements of the complete azimuthal acoustic pressure, which inevitably reduces the efficiency and increases the bit error rate (BER). To address these challenges, this study proposes a modified dynamic modal decomposition (DMD) method by partially sampling the acoustic field for precise TC detection. Numerical simulations confirm the accuracy of this approach in extracting single or multiple TCs magnitudes within a partially sampled acoustic field. We theoretically compare the performance of the modified DMD approach with conventional orthogonal decoding method. Simulation results indicate that our modified DMD scheme exhibits lower BER under the same noise interference and is more robust to the array misalignment. Underwater acoustic communication is fraught with challenges, including signal distortion, noise, and interferences unique to aquatic environments. This study aimed to advance the field by developing a novel underwater modem system that utilizes machine learning for signal classification, enhancing the reliability and clarity of underwater transmissions. This research introduced a system architecture incorporating a Lattice Semiconductors FPGA for signal modulation and a half-pipe waveguide to emulate the underwater environment. For signal classification, support vector machines (SVMs) were leveraged with the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) employed for feature extraction from acoustic signals. Comparative analysis with traditional signal processing techniques highlighted the efficacy of the CWT in this context. The experiments and tests carried out with the system demonstrated superior performance in classifying modulated signals under simulated underwater conditions, with the SVM providing a robust classification despite the presence of noise. The use of the CWT for feature extraction significantly enhanced the model's accuracy, eliminating the need for further dimensionality reduction. Channel estimation in Underwater Acoustic Communication (UAC) faces significant challenges due to the non-Gaussian, impulsive noise in ocean environments and the inherent high dimensionality of the estimation task. This paper introduces a robust channel estimation algorithm by solving an l 1 − l 1 optimization problem via the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM), effectively exploiting channel sparsity and addressing impulsive noise outliers. A non-monotone backtracking line search strategy is also developed to improve the convergence behavior. The proposed algorithm is low in complexity and has robust performance. Simulation results show that it exhibits a small performance deterioration of less than 1 dB for Channel Impulse Response (CIR) estimation in impulsive noise environments, nearly matching its performance under Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) conditions. For Delay-Doppler (DD) doubly spread channel estimation, it maintains Bit Error Rate (BER) performance comparable to using ground truth channel information in both AWGN and impulsive noise environments. Underwater signal processing is primarily based on sound waves because of the unique properties of water. However, the slow speed and limited bandwidth of sound introduce numerous challenges, including pronounced time-varying characteristics and significant multipath effects. This paper explores a channel estimation method utilizing superimposed training sequences. Compared with conventional schemes, this method offers higher spectral efficiency and better adaptability to time-varying channels owing to its temporal traversal. To ensure success in this scheme, it is crucial to obtain time-varying channel estimation and data detection at low SNRs given that superimposed training sequences consume power resources. To achieve this goal, we initially employ coarse channel estimation utilizing superimposed training sequences. Subsequently, we employ approximate message passing algorithms based on the estimated channels for data detection, followed by iterative channel estimation and equalization based on estimated symbols. We devise an approximate message passing channel estimation method grounded on a Gaussian mixture model and refine its hyperparameters through the expectation maximization algorithm. Then, we refine the channel information based on time correlation by employing an autoregressive hidden Markov model. Lastly, we perform numerical simulations of communication systems by utilizing a time-varying channel toolbox to simulate time-varying channels, and we validate the feasibility of the proposed communication system using experimental field data. The Seafloor Geodetic Observation–Array (SGO-A), operated by the Japan Coast Guard, relies on the Global Navigation Satellite System–Acoustics combination (GNSS-A) technique, which integrates satellite positioning systems and undersea acoustic ranging to determine seafloor crustal deformation at the centimeter level for earthquake disaster prevention. Recently, we found distortion in the SGO-A 10-kHz carrier wave that degraded the accuracy. Carrier wave distortion can cause errors on the scale of several centimeters to twenty centimeters, which greatly impedes centimeter-level observations. This study investigated this carrier wave degradation by an underwater acoustic communication experiment conducted in 2022, using a transducer similar to that used by SGO-A. Also, we reproduced degraded waveforms through a grid search-like method for quantitatively evaluating the extent to which the interior of the equipment contributed to deterioration. Our results underscore the importance of careful consideration in signal processing, as the observed waveform degradation is not solely attributed to hardware structures but also to internal electrical circuits. The findings suggest that conventional signal identification methods may lead to errors, providing motivation for a shift towards experimental and experiential timing-based waveform identification approaches to enhance accuracy in GNSS-A systems. In this paper, a novel fusion network for automatic modulation classification (AMC) is proposed in underwater acoustic communication, which consists of a Transformer and depth-wise convolution (DWC) network. Transformer breaks the limitation of sequential signal input and establishes the connection between different modulations in a parallel manner. Its attention mechanism can improve the modulation recognition ability by focusing on the key information. DWC is regularly inserted in the Transformer network to constitute a spatial-temporal structure, which can enhance the classification results at lower signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The proposed method can obtain more deep features of underwater acoustic signals. This paper proposes a whistle-generative adversarial network (WhistleGAN) that generates whistles for biomimetic underwater covert acoustic communication. The proposed method generates new whistles to maintain covertness by avoiding the repetitive use of the same whistles. Since the human ear perceives octave frequency such that low-frequency resolution is relatively larger than that of low frequencies, the proposed WhistleGAN uses mel filter banks to keep the fidelity in mimicking while reducing the complexity. The mean opinion score test verified that the whistles generated by the proposed method and the recorded real whistles have a similar score of 4.3, and the computer simulations proved that the bit error rate performance of the proposed method is the same as that of the real whistle. The convergence zone holds significant importance in deep-sea underwater acoustic propagation, playing a pivotal role in remote underwater acoustic detection and communication. Despite the adaptability and predictive power of machine learning, its practical application in predicting the convergence zone remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to address this gap by developing a high-resolution ocean front-based model for convergence zone prediction. Out of 24 machine learning algorithms tested through K-fold cross-validation, the multilayer perceptron-random forest hybrid demonstrated the highest accuracy, showing its superiority in predicting the convergence zone within a complex ocean front environment. The research findings emphasized the substantial impact of ocean fronts on the convergence zone's location concerning the sound source. Specifically, they highlighted that in relatively cold (or warm) water, the intensity of the ocean front significantly influences the proximity (or distance) of the convergence zone to the sound source. Furthermore, among the input features, the turning depth emerged as a crucial determinant, contributing more than 25% to the model's effectiveness in predicting the convergence zone's distance. The model achieved an accuracy of 82.43% in predicting the convergence zone's distance with an error of less than 1 km. Additionally, it attained a 77.1% accuracy in predicting the convergence zone's width within a similar error range. Notably, this prediction model exhibits strong performance and generalizability, capable of discerning evolving trends in new datasets when cross-validated using in situ observation data and information from diverse sea areas. This paper proposes a high-performance receiver for underwater acoustic communications based on time reversal processing for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The receiver employs the vector approximate message passing (VAMP) algorithm as a soft equalizer in turbo equalization. By performing self-iteration between the inner soft slicer and the inner soft equalizer, the VAMP algorithm achieves near-optimal performance. Furthermore, an iterative channel-estimation-based soft successive interference cancellation method is incorporated to suppress co-channel interference in the MIMO system. Additionally, the introduction of passive time reversal technology can combine multiple channels into a single channel, which greatly reduces the computational complexity of the MIMO system, especially for large MIMO systems. The effectiveness of the proposed receiver is verified using experimental data collected in Songhua Lake, China in 2019. The results demonstrate that the proposed receiver significantly reduces the complexity of the traditional parallel-VAMP receiver without sacrificing performance and outperforms other receivers of the same type. Moreover, our experimental results also verify that the VAMP-turbo outperforms the generalized approximate message passing (GAMP)-turbo in terms of bit error rate and convergence performance. Due to the relative motion between transmitters and receivers and the multipath characteristic of wideband underwater acoustic channels, Doppler and channel estimations are of great significance for an underwater acoustic (UWA) communication system. In this paper, a preamble signal based on superimposed linear frequency modulation (LFM) signals is first designed. Based on the designed preamble signal, a real-time Doppler factor estimation algorithm is proposed. The relative correlation peak shift of two LFM signals in the designed preamble signal is utilized to estimate the Doppler factor. Moreover, an enhanced channel estimation algorithm, the correlation-peak-search-based improved orthogonal matching pursuit (CPS-IOMP) algorithm, is also proposed. In the CPS-IOMP algorithm, the excellent autocorrelation characteristic of the designed preamble signal is used to estimate the channel sparsity and multipath delays, which are utilized to construct the simplified dictionary matrix. The simulation and sea trial data analysis results validated the designed preamble, the proposed Doppler estimation algorithm, and the channel estimation algorithm. The performance of the proposed Doppler factor estimation is better than that of the block estimation algorithm. Compared with the original OMP algorithm with known channel sparsity, the proposed CPS-IOMP algorithm achieves a similar estimation accuracy with a smaller computational complexity, as well as requiring no prior knowledge about the channel sparsity. This paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based power allocation for underwater acoustic communication networks (UACNs). The objective function is formulated as maximizing channel capacity under constraints of maximum power and minimum channel capacity. To solve this problem, a multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG) approach is introduced, where each transmitter node is considered as an agent. Given the definition of a Markov decision process (MDP) model for this problem, the agents learn to collaboratively maximize the channel capacity by deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) learning. Specifically, the power allocation of each agent is obtained by a centralized training and distributed execution (CTDE) method. Simulation results show the sum rate achieved by the proposed algorithm approximates that of the fractional programming (FP) algorithm and improves by at least 5% compared with the DQN (deep Q-learning network) -based power allocation algorithm. To address the problem of unreliable single-link underwater acoustic communication caused by large signal delays and strong multipath effects in shallow water environments, this paper proposes a distributed underwater acoustic diversity communication system (DUA-DCS). DUA-DCS employs a maneuverable distributed cross-medium buoy network to form multiple distributed, non-coherent, and parallel communication links. In the uplink, a receiving diversity processing mechanism of joint decision feedback equalizer embedded phase-locked loop and maximum signal-to-interference ratio combining (DFE-PLL-MSIRC) is proposed to achieve waveform-level diversity combining of underwater signals. A phase-locked loop module is embedded in each branch of the decision feedback equalizer to eliminate the residual frequency and phase errors after Doppler compensation. Meanwhile, the combining coefficients are determined based on the maximum signal-to-interference ratio criterion, taking into account the residual inter-symbol interference after equalization, resulting in efficient and accurate computation. Additionally, the combined decision values are fed back to the feedback filters in each branch to ensure more accurate feedback output. Simulation and lake experiment results demonstrate that, compared to the single-link communication system, DFE-PLL-MSIRC can achieve a diversity gain of more than 5.2 dB and obtain about 3 dB more diversity gain than the comparison algorithm. And the BER of DFE-PLL-MSIRC can be reduced by at least one order of magnitude, which is lower by at least 0.6 order of magnitude compared to the comparison algorithm. In the downlink, a transmitting diversity processing mechanism of complex orthogonal space-time block coding (COSTBC) is proposed. By utilizing a newly designed generalized complex orthogonal transmission matrix, complete transmission diversity can be achieved at the coding rate of 3/4. The underwater acoustic communication (UAC) operating in very shallow-water should ensure reliable transmission in conditions of strong multipath propagation, significantly disturbing the received signal. One of the techniques to achieve this goal is the direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) technique, which consists in binary phase shift keying (BPSK) according to a pseudo-random spreading sequence. This paper describes the DSSS data transmission tests in the simulation and experimental environment, using different types of pseudo-noise sequences: m-sequences and Kasami codes of the order 6 and 8. The transmitted signals are of different bandwidth and the detection at the receiver side was performed using two detection methods: non-differential and differential. The performed experiments allowed to draw important conclusions for the designing of a physical layer of the shallow-water UAC system. Both, m-sequences and Kasami codes allow to achieve a similar bit error rate, which at best was less than 10-3. At the same time, the 6th order sequences are not long enough to achieve an acceptable BER under strong multipath conditions. In the case of transmission of wideband signals the differential detection algorithm allows to achieve a significantly better BER (less than 10-2) than nondifferential one (BER not less than 10-1). In the case of narrowband signals the simulation tests have shown that the non-differential algorithm gives a better BER, but experimental tests under conditions of strong multipath propagation did not confirm it. The differential algorithm allowed to achieve a BER less than 10-2 in experimental tests, while the second algorithm allowed to obtain, at best, a BER less than 10-1. In addition, two indicators have been proposed for a rough assessment which of the detection algorithms under current propagation conditions in the channel will allow to obtain a better BER. Exploring underwater acoustic sensing networks to detect and monitor ocean characteristics provides a novel approach for marine environment monitoring, disaster warning and resource exploration. However, factors such as underwater acoustic communication, ocean currents and sensor power prevent the direct adoption of terrestrial wireless sensing networks. Moreover, most previous studies have simply increased the number of nodes while ignoring the interference caused by high node density. In this paper, data collection in an offshore tidal scenario is investigated by table forwarding based election (TFBE) scheme. To balance node energy and reduce energy consumption of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), the improved algorithm (TFBE-A) is proposed. Meanwhile, in this scheme, we adopt AUVs to assist in collecting and put forward a 3D precision adjustable trajectory planning (3DPATP) algorithm. To better perform 3DPATP, the maximum minimum error estimation algorithm is presented to simplify the computer operations. Additionally, we study the probability distribution function of nodes in space, providing a foundation for arranging nodes and optimizing topology. With the extensive application of sensor technology in scientific ocean research, ocean resource exploration, underwater engineering construction, and other fields, underwater target positioning technology has become an important support for the ocean field. This paper proposes a robust positioning algorithm that combines the disadvantages of distributed estimation and particle swarm optimization, which can solve the large localization error problem caused by uncertainties in underwater acoustic communication and sampling processes. Considering the presence of ranging anomalies and sampling packet loss in underwater acoustic measurements, a weighted coupling filling method is used to correct the outliers in an underwater acoustic ranging signal. Based on the mapping model from the element array to the underwater acoustic responder, an unconstrained optimization algorithm for one-time localization estimation of underwater acoustic targets was established. Based on the one-time localization estimation results of underwater acoustic targets, an improved multi-particle swarm optimization estimation based on interactive search is proposed, which improves the accuracy of underwater target localization. The numerical results show that the positioning accuracy of the proposed algorithm can be effectively enhanced in cases of distance measurement errors and azimuth measurement errors. Compared with the positioning error before optimization, the positioning error can be reduced after optimization.
