In this study, we investigated the effect and mechanism of Undariopsis peterseniana, an edible brown alga, on hair growth. The treatment of vibrissa follicles with U. peterseniana extract ex vivo for 21 days significantly increased the hair-fiber lengths. The U. peterseniana extract also significantly accelerated anagen initiation in vivo. Moreover, we found that U. peterseniana extract was able to open the KATP channel, which may contribute to increased hair growth. The U. peterseniana extract decreased 5α-reductase activity and markedly increased the proliferation of dermal papilla cells, a central regulator of the hair cycle. The U. peterseniana extract increased the levels of cell cycle proteins, such as Cyclin D1, phospho(ser780)-pRB, Cyclin E, phospho-CDK2, and CDK2. The U. peterseniana extract also increased the phosphorylation of ERK and the levels of Wnt/β-catenin signaling proteins such as glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) and β-catenin. These results suggested that the U. peterseniana extract had the potential to influence hair growth by dermal papilla cells proliferation through the activation of the Wnt/β-catenin and ERK pathways. We isolated a principal of the U. peterseniana extract, which was subsequently identified as apo-90-fucoxanthinone, a trichogenic compound. The kelp Undariopsis peterseniana (Kjellman) Miyabe et Okamura is warm water tolerant and consequently there is currently considerable interest in developing commercial cultivation techniques for this species in Korea. Undaria is an important species for both the abalone industry and for commercial seaweed mariculture. In an attempt to extend the culture period of Undaria we bred and cultured hybrid kelp that is a cross between free-living gametophytes of U. peterseniana and Undariopsis pinnatifida. The morphological characteristics of the F hybrid sporophytes were intermediate between those of the parent plants having shallow pinnated blades and forming both sorus and sporophyll. A F generation was produced by isolating zoospores from sorus and sporophyll separately from a F hybrid thallus. Using free-living gametophyte seeding and standard on-growing techniques, F (female U. pinnatifida and male U. peterseniana), F, and F gametophytes were cultured from December 2011 to May 2013. The morphological differences between the F and F generations were assessed. The F hybrids were found to have longer pinnate blades and narrower midribs than the F hybrid and only formed sporophylls. Growth and morphology of F hybrids originating from the sporophyll or sorus of the F hybrids were not morphologically different from each other. Both of the F hybrids exhibited late maturation, with the early stages of sporophylls appearing in April. This late maturation of F hybrids is beneficial in the development of hybrid strains that extend the period of availability of Undaria for abalone feed and cultivation in Korea. The proximate composition, free amino acid composition and mineral contents from Undariopsis peterseniana were determined, and the antioxidant activities of ethanol (EtOH) and hot water extracts of U. peterseniana were investigated using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2'- azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)) radical scavenging effects and reducing power. The contents of moisture, ash, protein, lipid and carbohydrate were 12.5%, 23.1%, 9.7%, 0.2% and 54.5%, respectively, and alginic acid content was 12.3%. The major free amino acid contents were alanine, phenylalanine, aminoethanol, valine, glutamic acid and phosphoserine. Ca (1589.1 mg) was the largest mineral followed by Na (344.6 mg), Mg (74.3 mg), Zn (10.2 mg) and Fe (1.5 mg). The total phenolic contents of EtOH and hot water extracts were exhibited at 15.7 and 4.3 mg GAE/g sample, respectively. The antioxidant activity of EtOH extract exhibited strong ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities with reducing power, and hot water extract also demonstrated strong ABTS radical scavenging effects. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that U. peterseniana contained an abundance of naturally occurring nutrients (free amino acids and minerals), and the strong antioxidant activities of EtOH and hot water extracts from U. peterseniana could be good sources of natural antioxidants for healthcare products. U. peterseniana plants have been successfully transferred to the northern coast of Korea beyond their original habitat in Jeju Island (33°30′08.65″N, 126°55′39.02″E). In this study, we cultured a hybrid kelp consisting of a cross between free-living gametophytes of U. peterseniana and U. pinnatifida in an attempt to extend the culture period of Undaria which is an important species for both the abalone industry and for commercial seaweed mariculture for human food applications. Morphological characters and cultivation period were compared between the parent thalli and the hybrid. The cultivation experiment was conducted in Wando, on the southern coast of Korea (34°26′18.68″N, 127°05′43.88″E). The morphological characteristics of the hybrid thalli were intermediate between the two species having shallow pinnated blades and a reduced reproductive organ. Hybrid thalli showed faster growth rates, 1.5 times greater biomass, and a longer cultivation period than the parent thalli. Undariopsis peterseniana is an endangered annual brown alga in Udo, Jeju Island, Korea. There is current interest in the commercial-scale aquaculture of this species for warm-water species development in Korea. Growth and maturation were investigated from January to December 2007 in their natural habitat. Zoospores were transplanted into an intensive seaweed culture ground in Wando, southern coast of Korea, for the mass cultivation of this species. Indoor and outdoor cultivation were conducted from June 2007 to May 2008. Mean production obtained from the zoospore seeding was 31.1 ± 1.5 kg wet wt. m of culture rope during the cultivation period in situ. Transplanted F thalli in Wando had a length 1.7 times longer than their parents in Udo, and their maximal growth period changed from June (at 19.9°C in Udo of natural habitat) to April (at 14.0°C in Wando of culture ground). The relationship between optimal water depth for culture and underwater irradiance during the U. peterseniana cultivation was defined as: $$ y = - 0.78 \times + 7.67\left( {{r^2} = 0.92} \right) $$.
