1. Effect of Exogenous Potassium on the Reduction in Tar, Nicotine and Carbon Monoxide Deliveries in the Mainstream Smoke of Cigarettes

Abstract

Deliveries of tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide in mainstream smoke decreased as the exogenous-potassium content of tobacco increased. The puff count was almost unchanged with added potassium malate, but slightly decreased with added nitrate. Potassium malate was more effective than the nitrate for the reduction of carbon monoxide, whereas the opposite was observed in the case of nicotine. Both the exogenous and the endogenous potassium contents influenced the reduction of carbon-monoxide delivery through a decrease in the peak temperature of the burning cone. The pungency and off-taste peculiar to the tobacco were eliminated to some extent by the addition of potassium malate at levels less than 2 % expressed as potassium.

Abstract

We developed remaining service life diagnostic technology of phenol insulators for circuit breakers. Phenol insulators were analyzed by chemical evaluation such as ion concentration and coloration, and the results were diagnosed by the MahalanobisTaguchi system (MTS), which is a pattern information technology. Particularly effective items for diagnosis included ions of nitric acid, sulfuric acid, chloride, and calcium. Since there was a good relationship between the results diagnosed by MTS and the actual measurement results of surface resistivity, we found that applying MTS to the chemical evaluation results allowed deterioration diagnosis of phenol insulators instead of surface resistivity, which couldn't be measured on-site. Time was defined as the end of the service life when electrical discharge was initiated and remaining service life was predicted. The linear relationship (master curve of service life) was clarified between the real number value of elapsed time and the logarithmic value of surface resistivity at 50% RH, and remaining service life was predicted from the diagnosis results by MTS and the year in which the master curve and the threshold value intersect. Surface resistivity (threshold value) for electrical discharge initiation was derived from creepage distance, permittivity of phenol insulators, frequency, etc. We substantiated that the remaining service life of the phenol insulators could be predicted by this technology because a good relationship existed between the check examination results of the electric discharge initiation in the laboratory and the prediction results. Abstract

The 701F is a high-temperature 50 Hz industrial grade 220 MW size engine based on a scaling of the 501F 150 MW class 60 Hz machine, and incorporates a higher compressor pressure ratio to increase the thermal efficiency. The prototype engine is under a two-year performance and reliability verification testing program at MHI's Yokohama Plant and was initially fired in June of 1992. This paper describes the 701F design features design changes made from 501F. The associated performance and reliability verification test program will also be presented.

Abstract

As part of Westinghouse-MHI 501F development program, a new 16-stage axial flow compressor has been designed. Reported here are elements of the aerodynamic and mechanical design as well as general design features. Overall performance test results are also presented, which indicate that the compressor met or exceeded all expectations amenable to measurement during the full load shop test program., Westinghouse designed a new 16-stage axial flow compressor as part of the Westinghouse- Mitsubishi Heavy Industries 501F development project. The 501F compressor underwent full load testing and good agreement was seen between the actual and estimated performance. The 501F's surge margin was also found to be better compared to the W501D5 compressors. Increasing blade rings for stages 7 to 16 improved the alignment of tip and seal clearances and reduced the difficulty inservicing stators. Problems such as stator vane cracking and blade walking werealso considered.
