We present a new method of deriving shapes of entanglement wedges directly from CFT calculations. We point out that a reduced density matrix in holographic CFTs possesses a sharp wedge structure such that inside the wedge we can distinguish two local excitations, while outside we cannot. We can determine this wedge, which we call a CFT wedge, by computing a distinguishability measure. We find that CFT wedges defined by the fidelity or Bures distance as a distinguishability measure, coincide perfectly with shadows of entanglement wedges in AdS/CFT. We confirm this agreement between CFT wedges and entanglement wedges for two dimensional holographic CFTs where the subsystem is chosen to be an interval or double intervals, as well as higher dimensional CFTs with a round ball subsystem. On the other hand if we consider a free scalar CFT, we find that there are no sharp CFT wedges. This shows that sharp entanglement wedges emerge only for holographic CFTs owing to the large N factorization. We also generalize our analysis to a time-dependent example and to a holographic boundary conformal field theory (AdS/BCFT). Finally we study other distinguishability measures to define CFT wedges. We observe that some of measures lead to CFT wedges which slightly deviate from the entanglement wedges in AdS/CFT and we give a heuristic explanation for this. We present a new class of local quenches described by mixed states, parameterized universally by two parameters. We compute the evolutions of entanglement entropy for both a holographic and Dirac fermion CFT in two dimensions. This turns out to be equivalent to calculations of two point functions on a torus. We find that in holographic CFTs, the results coincide with the known results of pure state local operator quenches. On the other hand, we obtain new behaviors in the Dirac fermion CFT, which are missing in the pure state counterpart. By combining our results with the inequalities known for von-Neumann entropy, we obtain an upper bound of the pure state local operator quenches in the Dirac fermion CFT. We present a new method of deriving the geometry of entanglement wedges in holography directly from conformal field theories (CFTs). We analyze an information metric called the Bures metric of reduced density matrices for locally excited states. This measures distinguishability of states with different points excited. For a subsystem given by an interval, we precisely reproduce the expected entanglement wedge for two dimensional holographic CFTs from the Bures metric, which turns out to be proportional to the AdS metric on a time slice. On the other hand, for free scalar CFTs, we do not find any sharp structures like entanglement wedges. When a subsystem consists of disconnected two intervals we manage to reproduce the expected entanglement wedge from holographic CFTs with correct phase transitions, up to a very small error, from a quantity alternative to the Bures metric., Comment: 7 pages, Revtex, 14 figures

We show that the entanglement wedge cross section (EWCS) can become larger than the quantum entanglement measures such as the entanglement of formation in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We then discuss a series of holographic duals to the optimized correlation measures, finding a novel geometrical measure of correlation, the \textit{entanglement wedge mutual information} (EWMI), as the dual of the $Q$-correlation. We prove that the EWMI satisfies the properties of the $Q$-correlation as well as the strong superadditivity, and that it can become larger than the entanglement measures. These results imply that both of the EWCS and the EWMI capture more than quantum entanglement in the entanglement wedge, which enlightens a potential role of classical correlations in holography., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures. v2: comments added in IV-B, references added. v3: minor corrections, published version

We study the entanglement of purification (EoP), a measure of total correlation between two subsystems $A$ and $B$, for free scalar field theory on a lattice and the transverse-field Ising model by numerical methods. In both of these models, we find that the EoP becomes a non-monotonic function of the distance between $A$ and $B$ when the total number of lattice sites is small. When it is large, the EoP becomes monotonic and shows a plateau-like behavior. Moreover, we show that the original reflection symmetry which exchanges $A$ and $B$ can get broken in optimally purified systems. In the Ising model, we find this symmetry breaking in the ferromagnetic phase. We explore a conformal field theoretic interpretation of the holographic entanglement of purification, which is defined as the minimal area of entanglement wedge cross section. We argue that in AdS3/CFT2, the holographic entanglement of purification agrees with the entanglement entropy for a purified state, obtained from a special Weyl transformation, called path-integral optimizations. By definition, this special purified state has the minimal path-integral complexity. We confirm this claim in several examples., Comment: 7 pages, Revtex, 5 figures

Relative entropy of entanglement (REE) is an entanglement measure of bipartite mixed states, defined by the minimum of the relative entropy $S(\rho_{AB}|| \sigma_{AB})$ between a given mixed state $\rho_{AB}$ and an arbitrary separable state $\sigma_{AB}$. The REE is always bounded by the mutual information $I_{AB}=S(\rho_{AB} || \rho_{A}\otimes \rho_{B})$ because the latter measures not only quantum entanglement but also classical correlations. In this paper we address the question of to what extent REE can be small compared to the mutual information in conformal field theories (CFTs). For this purpose, we perturbatively compute the relative entropy between the vacuum reduced density matrix $\rho^{0}_{AB}$ on disjoint subsystems $A \cup B$ and arbitrarily separable state $\sigma_{AB}$ in the limit where two subsystems A and B are well separated, then minimize the relative entropy with respect to the separable states. We argue that the result highly depends on the spectrum of CFT on the subsystems. When we have a few low energy spectrum of operators as in the case where the subsystems consist of a finite number of spins in spin chain models, the REE is considerably smaller than the mutual information. However in general our perturbative scheme breaks down, and the REE can be as large as the mutual information., Comment: 35 pages, 2 figures

We introduce a new information-theoretic measure of multipartite quantum/classical correlations $\Delta_P$, by generalizing the entanglement of purification to multipartite states. We provide proofs of its various properties, focusing on several entropic inequalities, in generic quantum systems. In particular, it turns out that the multipartite entanglement of purification gives an upper bound on multipartite mutual information, which is a generalization of quantum mutual information in the spirit of relative entropy. After that, motivated by a tensor network description of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we also define a holographic dual of multipartite entanglement of purification $\Delta_W$, as a sum of minimal areas of codimension-2 surfaces which divide the entanglement wedge into multi-pieces. We prove that this geometrical quantity satisfies all properties we proved for the multipartite entanglement of purification. These agreements strongly support the $\Delta_{P}=\Delta_{W}$ conjecture. We also show that the multipartite entanglement of purification gives an upper bound on multipartite squashed entanglement, which is a promising measure of multipartite quantum entanglement. We compute the entanglement of purification (EoP) in a 2d free scalar field theory with various masses. This quantity measures correlations between two subsystems and is reduced to the entanglement entropy when the total system is pure. We obtain explicit numerical values by assuming minimal gaussian wave functionals for the purified states. We find that when the distance between the subsystems is large, the EoP behaves like the mutual information. However, when the distance is small, the EoP shows a characteristic behavior which qualitatively agrees with the conjectured holographic computation and which is different from that of the mutual information. We study properties of the minimal cross section of entanglement wedge which connects two disconnected subsystems in holography. In particular we focus on various inequalities which are satisfied by this quantity. They suggest that it is a holographic counterpart of the quantity called entanglement of purification, which measures a bipartite correlation in a given mixed state. We give a heuristic argument which supports this identification based on a tensor network interpretation of holography. We study the holographic entanglement entropy and mutual information for Lorentz boosted subsystems. In holographic CFTs at zero and finite temperature, we find that the mutual information gets divergent in a universal way when the end points of two subsystems are light-like separated. In Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating geometries dual to non-relativistic theories, we show that the holographic entanglement entropy is not well-defined for Lorentz boosted subsystems in general. This strongly suggests that in non-relativistic theories, we cannot make a real space factorization of the Hilbert space on a generic time slice except the constant time slice, as opposed to relativistic field theories., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, latex, v2:comments added, published version
