In numerical modelling of soil response it is often required to define an accurate value for the stiffness at small strains (G0). Such values are usually obtained from tables or charts available in the literature, rather than being directly measured in tests. These will however be sufficiently accurate only if a similar soil has already been studied and described. In the present paper, the results of a series of laboratory tests conducted on a soil from southern Italy are reported. In these tests, a well-established empirical relationship linking small-strain stiffness values to state parameters was calibrated, allowing the determination of accurate G0 values for the specific soil, and contributing to the collection of data in the literature. The bender element technique, in conjunction with standard triaxial testing on reconstituted soil samples, was employed. A series of isotropic compression tests was used for the calibration, and the resulting power law was then checked through shear testing. The proposed equation compares well with results reported in the literature for different types of soils. On approaching failure a change in behaviour is evident; this is in accordance with observations already reported in the literature for a variety of soils and is subject to several interpretations, but does not substantially interfere with the general validity of the proposed correlation, which can therefore be adopted as a useful empirical equation for determining G0 values for this soil.

The volumes on the Great War that are here published are the result of a series of seminars held at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Florence between 2014 and 2015. Starting from the occasion of the centennial, the authors wanted to take stock of some specific aspects of the studies related to the First World War. Storici, analisti militari, politologi e sociologi si sono altresi interrogati sul senso della frattura che ha inaugurato il Novecento e, di conseguenza, sui tratti di fondo della nuova politica propria del ‘secolo breve’, in una prospettiva sia italiana che europea.

This study shows, for a landslide prone area, the assessment of the slopes capacity to withstand earthquakes and how triggered mass movements can threaten potentially exposed structures and facilities. As a result a set of spatial representations (i.e., scenarios) of slope performances in a variety of seismic and climatic conditions is given and how they can induce damages or interruptions of public services such as rescue activities, communication roads, or the disruption of lifelines and urban settlements is presented.

IntroduzioneL'analisi dei processi di integrazione non ha ancora raggiunto presso gli studiosi di politica l'ampiezza e l'approfondimento che la loro crescente importanza nel sistema delle relazioni internazionali ormai merita. Il concetto stesso di integrazione è tutt'altro che pacifico in dottrina, e anzi spesso non figura neppure nelle maggiori opere enciclopediche, almeno nell'accezione che qui interessa. Anche nella stessa letteratura delle relazioni internazionali, in particolare quella di ispirazione classica, sono rari i casi di autori che trattino del concetto e del relativo fenomeno in modo esauriente. Piú nutrito è semmai il numero degli appartenenti alla scuola c.d. ≪ scientifica ≫ che hanno cercato di far progredire la conoscenza dei processi di integrazione. Ma anche da questo punto di vista — come vedremo — molto resta da fare.

When one looks comparatively at the superpowers, it is easy to realize that they show asymmetries: in ideology, in politics, in power, and in capabilities.

Among most scholars the analysis of processes of integration has not yet reached the desired amplitude and depth that its growing importance in the International Relations system by now deserves. The same concept of integration is not yet agreed upon by everyone in the doctrine. What is more, it is not often found in major encyclopedic works; at least not in the sense in which we are interested. 1 Even in International Relations bibliography, particularly that one of “classical” inspiration, we find only rare cases in which authors deal with the concept (and its relative subjects) in an exhaustive manner. 2 If anything, the number of those belonging to the so-called “scientific” school is more abundant, and have attempted to make progress in the knowledge of integrative processes. But even from this point of view, much still remains to be done. One of the tendencies of postbehavioralism is of soliciting a type of research which would be more relevant for decision-makers. Now, the problem of integration is among the first places in the order of priorities established by the supporters of this approach. Methodology, analytic technique, and quantification still remain important. But in perspective to these is added the problem of filling the gaps between quantitative and qualitative analyses; as well as revaluating the study of history, and obtaining from it at the same time a nomotetic use that would allow one to move smoothly on a nomotetic-idiografic continuum, and to separate theory from its time conditions.
