17. Esophagotomy in a domestic fowl: a rare case report

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Foreign body in esophagus in birds is rarely reported in literature. Most common site of foreign body in birds is proventriculus and ventriculus. The purpose of this study is to discuss the diagnosis of a large sharp foreign body in the distal third of the neck by plain radiography and its retrieval through esophagotomy and subsequent survival of the fowl. CASE DESCRIPTION: An Aseel breed of domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus) was referred to the surgery department with a history of swelling in the neck and subsequent anorexia since 24 h, but normal water intake. Radiological examination revealed a large fish bone in esophagus. Because of the sharp edges of the foreign body esophagotomy was performed rather than per os (po) retrieval or milking of the foreign body into the crop and performing an ingluviotomy. FINDINGS/TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Esophagotomy was performed under local infiltration using a diluted solution of lignocaine. Fish bone pieces were retrieved from the esophagus of the fowl. The esophagotomy incision was closed in two layers using polyglactin 910 no: 3-0. Postoperatively, the owner was advised to administer Enrofloxacin po at 10 mg/kg body weight (BW)/day for seven days and Tramadol (10 mg/kg BW, BID) for three days in water. This case was followed up for 8 months. There were no complications noticed by the owner. CONCLUSION: It could be concluded that prompt intervention and surgical management may be necessary for retrieval of sharp esophageal foreign bodies lodged in the distal cervical esophagus of domestic fowl.

Abstract

Congenital rectovaginal fistula is characterised by the communication between the dorsal wall of the vagina and the ventral portion of the rectum, so that the vulva functions as a common opening to the urogenital and gastrointestinal tracts (Shakoor et al., 2012). Type III Atresia Ani is a congenital anomaly in which imperforate anus combined with the blind rectal pouch which is more than 1 cm away from the anal dimple (Vianna and Tobias, 2005). 32. A Rare Case of Liposarcoma in a Dog.

Abstract

A 6 year old cross bred dog was referred with a history of a growth in the right foreleg. Clinical examination revealed presence of a large hard mass above the right elbow. The growth was solitary, well circumscribed, firm and freely movable. The thoracic radiographs showed no evidence of pulmonary metastases. Under general anaesthesia, the tumor growth was excised following aseptic surgical procedure. Histopathological examination confirmed the tumor as liposarcoma. The article presents a case study of a three-months-old pup who encountered esophageal choking in Tamil Nadu, India. It cites that the dog swallowed the rubber nipple of the feeding bottle while playing. Moreover, doctors did esophagotomy incision to remove the rubber nipple and given Cloxacillin and Ampicillin for treatment.

34. An Uncommon Malignant Mesothelioma in a Dog.

Abstract

The article presents a case study of a male eight year old German Shepherd dog who experienced progressive coughing, vomiting, weight loss and abdominal enlargement in Tamil Nadu, India. Results of the dog's clinical examination show large amount of fluid in its abdominal and thoracic cavity and it is very weak. Results of its post mortem examination reveal pedunculated and multiple masses in all its internal organs while its hispathological examination reveal malignant mesothelioma case.

Abstract

The article describes the case of a Murrah buffalo with dystocia caused by fetal ascites. The animal showed symptoms such as fetal monstrosity, foetal malpresentation with postural defects of extremities and various foetal abnormalities. It received low epidural anesthesia with lignocaine during the treatment. Fluid filled gross distension in the abdominal region of the fetus was found.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a systemic treatment of toxic or septic puerperal metritis in dairy cows with ceftiofur and PGF2α. Twenty crossbred cows having septic puerperal metritis 1-2 weeks postpartum were treated with PGF2α (Dinoprost triomethamine 5 mg/ ml) - Inj. Lutalyse @ 5 ml i/m on the first day followed by ceftiofur sodium @ 2.2 mg per kg i/ m for 5 days. Ringers lactate, dextrose saline and supportive multivitamin therapy for 3 days were also administered. All the observed clinical signs septic puerperal metritis came into normal after 5 days of treatment and animals recovered uneventfully. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
