Slaviske genstande fra vikingetid fundet i Danmark

Roskilde was founded around ad 1000 with theintention to mark and strengthen the position ofchurch and king as the imperative ideological,religious and power factor in the waning Viking-Age society. Initially it was not a commercialhub, and therefore it was hardly considered thatthe inhabitants 50 or 100 years later had to workhard to make the terrain smoother, drier and thususable, as the place had assumed urban characterand expanded rapidly. Urban settlements of thesame type as Roskilde were Lund and Viborg and - we assume - Odense. The names of Viborg and Odense point to a continuation of pagan shrines, while in the case of Roskilde and Lund it can only be postulated. The four cities contain some common topographical and archaeological-historical characteristics indicating that around the year1000 they were part of an overall plan. The aim was to establish bridgeheads that - mentally and physically - marked the connection between the ancestors’ customs and the young Christian kingdom, which unconditionally contained the seeds of massive societal change. It is hardly a coincidence that the four specially selected localities are in their respective “countries”.

Eftergravningen af et fundområde med syv guldbrakteater omfattede et mindre felt på ca. 1.450 m2. Udover brakteaterne var der fundet flere fibler og beslag fra tidlig yngre germansk jernalder, heriblandt våbenudstyr, der fristede til at tro, at der kunne være en gravplads på stedet. Derfor blev der trukket seks søgegrøfter syd og vest for feltet, så ca. 11.800 m2 blev prøvegravet. Samlet blev der registreret 820 anlægsspor. I feltet fremkom seks treskibede hustomter, heraf tre med rester af vægge. Pga. det smalle felt blev kun en enkelt nord-sydorienteret hus frilagt i sin helhed. Typologisk vurderes mindst to af husene at stamme fra romersk jernalder, mens et tredje formentlig er yngre. De øvrige kan ikke dateres typologisk til andet en yngre jernalder. Spor af grave var der kun hypotetisk i form af to mindre, stolpesatte skibssætninger, orienteret i nord-sydlig retning. En enkelt fingerknogle fra menneske fandtes i ”fyldproppen” over et stolpehul fra romersk jernalder, men om det er tilfældigt eller fra en ødelagt grav, er uvist. I søgegrøfterne var der flest anlæg nærmest udgravningsfeltet og vestover, mens mængden aftog mod sydvest. I forbindelse med undersøgelsen fandtes med metaldetektorer 140 genstande af metal, herunder yderligere fem hele eller fragmenterede guldbrakteater, en ormehovedfingerring, et par mindre guldringe og to stykker brudguld. Desuden fandtes flere romerske denarer, klipsølv, fibler fra romersk jernalder, ældre germansk jernalder og yngre germansk jernalder.

This report presents the results of a number of archeological test pits in the centre of Medieval Roskilde, excavated between 2010 and 2014. The excavations revealed that on top of the Viking Age top soil was a widespread layer of small stones, mostly flint, mixed with animal bones. The stone-and-bone layer was uncovered on the site of the medieval royal residence, in the street between the cathedral and the market street and in the market street itself. Since the excavation method was test pits, it is not possible unmistakably to conclude that the stone-and-bone layer was an all-inclusive covering of the streets, but there cannot be much doubt that they are widespread. Dendrochronology and 14C-samples consistently date the horizon of the stone-and-bone layer between the first half of the 11th century and the end of the 12th century. Combining the dates and the area where the layer is present suggest that this may be an initiative for the benefit of the public in the newly founded residential site of the king and the bishop, facilitating the commerce and the budding town. Along the street between the cathedral and the market street, more secluded parts of the same shallow ditch were registered. Most likely, this is a boundary between the public street and private plots. A wattle fence dated to 1040's by dendrochronology flanked the ditch. Viking Age ring fortresses were some of the largest construction projects in Danish prehistory. In this article we reconstruct the amount of turf and timber used in the construction of the Borgring ring fortress and estimate the resource area needed to supply the building materials. Using REVEALS pollen data modelling, we quantify the regional oak land cover and estimate the resource area. The results show that even though Borgring was built in an open cultural landscape, sufficient supply of oak for the construction would have been accessible within a few kilometres from the fortress.
