- Abstract
The thirteen chapters in this book introduce students to the theory and analysis of price determination in markets for agricultural and food products, and in markets for the main factors of production in agriculture – land, labour and capital. The book is targeted at advanced BSc as well as MSc students. It covers neoclassical economic theory as well as the many unique institutions and policies that affect agricultural price determination. The chapters cover important characteristics of agricultural and food markets and prices, such as the role of institutions and organisations for agricultural price formation, imperfect competition, the role of technical change, retail pricing, price volatility and futures markets. The included case studies and exercises will enable students to apply what they have learned and test their comprehension.

- Abstract
Ulrich Koester researches and teaches at the Institute for Agricultural Economics at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Germany. He has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry for over 20 years. Moreover, he gained experience working with the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington D.C. and with numerous international organizations, including the World Bank, FAO, the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Court of Auditors. His teaching experience is based on courses taught at more than ten universities in general economics and agricultural economics. Part I of the book lays the theoretical foundations for understanding price formation in product and factor markets. In addition to neoclassical theory, institutional economics is of particular importance. Part II presents and evaluates agricultural policy with special reference to the EU, whereby the evaluation framework goes beyond the usual welfare theory analysis. The book is also a valuable aid for students of economic policy, especially because of its detailed evaluation of individual agricultural market policy instruments. The book is aimed at students at universities, technical colleges as well as politicians interested in rational agricultural policy making.

Over the past 20 years, we observed an increasing demand of precise and reliable experimental nuclear data in a number of scientific research fields like nuclear astrophysics, basic nuclear physics, nuclear medicine, geoscience, super heavy element research, and others. This demand induces also in an increasing number of requests for high-quality sample material in sufficient amounts and well-known isotopic composition, manufactured in a shape suitable for the specific envisaged application. The desired samples very often represent or contain rare radioactive isotopes, which are very exotic and available in limited amounts only. In dependence on their activity and/or dose rate, the handling of such samples can be extremely challenging. Thus, only a handful of laboratories worldwide are allowed and capable to work with this kind of material. Correspondingly high is the number of requests and waiting lists for sample and target preparation, even if the isotope itself is available in sufficient amounts.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

Purpose Autologous blood donation is not routinely recommended for all cases of orthognathic surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors for blood loss during bimaxillary osteotomies that might indicate preoperative blood donation. Patients and Methods In a prospective study, 127 consecutive patients undergoing bimaxillary surgery within a 14-month period were examined for hemoglobin and hematocrit reduction. Possible factors for intraoperative blood loss such as operating time, application of hydroxyethyl starch in segmental osteotomies, experience of the surgeon, and additional procedures (genioplasty, malar osteotomy, iliac crest graft) were statistically analyzed. Results The experience of the surgeon had no influence on the blood loss. Operating time and Quick value correlated significantly with hemoglobin and hematocrit drop after surgery. There was no difference between 1-piece maxilla cases with or without additional procedures and segmental maxilla cases without additional procedures. Only for the group of patients with segmental osteotomies and additional procedures was a significant higher blood loss found. Two patients (1.6%) received 1 unit of blood. Conclusion For patients undergoing bimaxillary osteotomies with segmentation of the maxilla and additional procedures, a preoperative donation of autologous blood should be considered.

The metabolism and excretion of orally administered or injected [14C]chlorphentermine has been studied in man, rhesus monkey, marmoset, rabbit, guinea-pig and rat. These species excreted 55–95% of the administered radioactivity in the urine over 5 days. Two metabolites were characterised by thin-layer and paper chromatography, gas-liquid chromatography and g.c.-m.s. and these were N-hydroxychlorphentermine and 1-(4'-chlorophenyl)-2-methyl-2-nitropropane. There are marked species differences in the excretion of N-oxidation products which were found in the urine of human volunteers. rhesus monkeys, rabbits and guinea-pigs, but not in the urine of marmosets or rats. The rat, rabbit and marmoset also excreted an unidentified unstable acid-labile precursor of chlorphentermine. The results are discussed in relation to the toxicity of the drug and to the metabolism of amphetamines in general.
