The $^{246}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) and $^{248}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) cross-sections have been measured at the Experimental Area 2 (EAR2) of the n_TOF facility at CERN with three C$_6$D$_6$ detectors. This measurement is part of a collective effort to improve the capture cross-section data for Minor Actinides (MAs), which are required to estimate the production and transmutation rates of these isotopes in light water reactors and innovative reactor systems. In particular, the neutron capture in $^{246}$Cm and $^{248}$Cm open the path for the formation of other Cm isotopes and heavier elements such as Bk and Cf and the knowledge of (n,$\gamma$) cross-sections of these Cm isotopes plays an important role in the transport, transmutation and storage of the spent nuclear fuel. The reactions $^{246}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) and $^{248}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) have been the two first capture measurements analyzed at n_TOF EAR2. Until this experiment and two recent measurements performed at J-PARC, there was only one set of data of the capture cross-sections of $^{246}$Cm and $^{248}$Cm, that was obtained in 1969 in an underground nuclear explosion experiment. In the measurement at n_TOF a total of 13 resonances of $^{246}$Cm between 4 and 400 eV and 5 of $^{248}$Cm between 7 and 100 eV have been identified and fitted. The radiative kernels obtained for $^{246}$Cm are compatible with JENDL-5, but some of them are not with JENDL-4, which has been adopted by JEFF-3.3 and ENDF/B-VIII.0. The radiative kernels obtained for the first three $^{248}$Cm resonances are compatible with JENDL-5, however, the other two are not compatible with any other evaluation and are 20% and 60% larger than JENDL-5.

The vitrification of aqueous solutions through rapid cooling is a remarkable achievement that launched the field of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and has enabled the cryopreservation of biological specimens. For judging the feasibility of a vitrification experiment, the critical cooling rate of pure water is a frequently cited reference quantity. However, an accurate determination has remained elusive, with estimates varying by several orders of magnitude. Here, we employ in situ and time-resolved electron microscopy to obtain a precise measurement. We use shaped microsecond laser pulses to briefly melt an amorphous ice sample before flash freezing it with a variable, well-defined cooling rate. This allows us to directly measure the critical cooling rate of pure water, which we determine to be $6.4\cdot10^{6}$ K/s. Our experimental approach also expands the toolkit of microsecond time-resolved cryo-EM, an emerging technique, in which a cryo sample is similarly flash melted and revitrified with a laser pulse.

Microsecond time-resolved cryo-electron microscopy has emerged as a novel approach for directly observing proteins dynamics. By providing microsecond temporal and near-atomic spatial resolution, it has the potential to elucidate a wide range of dynamics that were previously inaccessible and therefore, to significantly advance our understanding of protein function. This review summarizes the properties of the laser melting and revitrification process that underlies the technique and describes different experimental implementations. Strategies for initiating and probing dynamics are discussed. Finally, the microsecond time-resolved observation of the capsid dynamics of CCMV, an icosahedral plant virus, is reviewed, which illustrates important features of the technique as well as its potential.

Water vitrifies if cooled at rates above $3 \cdot 10^5$ K/s. Surprisingly, this process cannot simply be reversed by heating the resulting amorphous ice at a similar rate. Instead, we have recently shown that the sample transiently crystallizes even if the heating rate is more than one order of magnitude higher. This may present an issue for microsecond time-resolved cryo-electron microscopy experiments, in which vitreous ice samples are briefly flash melted with a laser pulse, since transient crystallization could potentially alter the dynamics of the embedded proteins. Here, we demonstrate how shaped microsecond laser pulses can be used to increase the heating rate and outrun crystallization during flash melting of amorphous solid water (ASW) samples. We use time-resolved electron diffraction experiments to determine that the critical heating rate is about $10^8$ K/s, more than two orders of magnitude higher than the critical cooling rate. Our experiments add to the toolbox of the emerging field of microsecond time-resolved cryo-electron microscopy by demonstrating a straightforward approach for avoiding crystallization during laser melting and for achieving significantly higher heating rates, which paves the way for nanosecond time-resolved experiments.

Water can be vitrified if it is cooled at rates exceeding $3*10^5$ K/s. This makes it possible to outrun crystallization in so-called no man's land, a range of deeply supercooled temperatures where water crystallizes rapidly. One would naively assume that the process can simply be reversed by heating the resulting amorphous ice at a similar rate. We demonstrate that this is not the case. When amorphous ice samples are flash melted with a microsecond laser pulse, time-resolved electron diffraction reveals that the sample transiently crystallizes despite a heating rate of more than $5*10^6$ K/s, demonstrating that the critical heating rate for outrunning crystallization is significantly higher than the critical cooling rate during vitrification. Moreover, we observe different crystallization kinetics for amorphous solid water (ASW) and hyperquenched glassy water (HGW), which suggests that the supercooled liquids formed during laser heating transiently retain distinct non-equilibrium structures that are associated with different nucleation rates. These experiments open up new avenues for elucidating the crystallization mechanism of water and studying its dynamics in no man's land. The hybrid zero dynamics control concept for bipedal walking is extended to include a non-instantaneous double support phase. A symmetric robot that consists of five rigid body segments which are connected by four actuated revolute joints is considered. Periodic walking gaits with a constant average walking speed consists of alternating single (SSP) and double support phases (DSP). Hybrid zero dynamics control designs usually assume an instantaneous DSP, which is a severe limitation. The proposed controllers use continuous SSPs and DSPs. Transitions between both phases are modeled as instantaneous events, when the rear leg lifts off at the end of the DSP and the swing leg touches down at the end of the SSP. Due to the fact that the model during the DSP has more actuators (4) than degrees of freedom (3), the system is overactuated. In order to combine it with the underactuated SSP model and then formulate a periodic walking gait, we suggest three controller designs for different applications. One with the underactuated DSP, one with the fully actuated DSP, and one with the overactuated DSP. A numerical optimization is used to generate energy efficient gaits in an offline process. According to the optimization results, artificially creating an underactuated controller for the DSP results in the most efficient gaits. Background: The $^{14}$N(n,p)$^{14}$C reaction is of interest in neutron capture therapy, where nitrogen-related dose is the main component due to low-energy neutrons, and in astrophysics, where 14N acts as a neutron poison in the s-process. Several discrepancies remain between the existing data obtained in partial energy ranges: thermal energy, keV region and resonance region. Purpose: Measuring the 14N(n,p)14C cross section from thermal to the resonance region in a single measurement for the first time, including characterization of the first resonances, and providing calculations of Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS). Method: Time-of-flight technique. Experimental Area 2 (EAR-2) of the neutron time-of-flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN. $^{10}$B(n,${\alpha}$)$^7$Li and $^{235}$U(n,f) reactions as references. Two detection systems running simultaneously, one on-beam and another off-beam. Description of the resonances with the R-matrix code sammy. Results: The cross section has been measured from sub-thermal energy to 800 keV resolving the two first resonances (at 492.7 and 644 keV). A thermal cross-section (1.809$\pm$0.045 b) lower than the two most recent measurements by slightly more than one standard deviation, but in line with the ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3 evaluations has been obtained. A 1/v energy dependence of the cross section has been confirmed up to tens of keV neutron energy. The low energy tail of the first resonance at 492.7 keV is lower than suggested by evaluated values, while the overall resonance strength agrees with evaluations. Conclusions: Our measurement has allowed to determine the $^{14}$N(n,p) cross-section over a wide energy range for the first time. We have obtained cross-sections with high accuracy (2.5 %) from sub-thermal energy to 800 keV and used these data to calculate the MACS for kT = 5 to kT = 100 keV., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables

A generally accepted understanding of the anomalous properties of water will only emerge if it becomes possible to systematically characterize water in the deeply supercooled regime, from where the anomalies appear to emanate. This has largely remained elusive because water crystallizes rapidly between 160 K and 232 K. Here, we present an experimental approach to rapidly prepare deeply supercooled water at a well-defined temperature and probe it with electron diffraction before crystallization occurs. We show that as water is cooled from room temperature to cryogenic temperature, its structure evolves smoothly, approaching that of amorphous ice just below 200 K. Our experiments narrow down the range of possible explanations of the origin for the water anomalies and open up new avenues for studying supercooled water.

In a recent note David Mermin attributed the idea that wave function collapse is a physical process to a misunderstanding of probability and the role it plays in quantum mechanics. There are, however, further misconceptions at play, some of which are shared by Mermin himself and more generally by QBists. The main objective of the present comment on his note is to explain why I disagree with his reading of a well-known passage by Niels Bohr, in particular the ambiguity of the first-person plural he perceives in Bohr's reference to "our description of nature" and "our experience.", Comment: 13 pages

Proteins typically undergo conformational dynamics on the microsecond to millisecond timescale as they perform their function, which is much faster than the time-resolution of cryo-electron microscopy and has thus prevented real-time observations. Here, we propose a novel approach for microsecond time-resolved cryo-electron microscopy that involves rapidly melting a cryo specimen in situ with a laser beam. The sample remains liquid for the duration of the laser pulse, offering a tunable time window in which the dynamics of embedded particles can be induced in their native liquid environment. After the laser pulse, the sample vitrifies in just a few microseconds, trapping particles in their transient configurations, so that they can subsequently be characterized with conventional cryo-electron microscopy. We demonstrate that our melting and revitrification approach is viable and affords microsecond time resolution. As a proof of principle, we study the disassembly of particles after they incur structural damage and trap them in partially unraveled configurations.

i-TED is an innovative detection system which exploits Compton imaging techniques to achieve a superior signal-to-background ratio in ($n,\gamma$) cross-section measurements using time-of-flight technique. This work presents the first experimental validation of the i-TED apparatus for high-resolution time-of-flight experiments and demonstrates for the first time the concept proposed for background rejection. To this aim both $^{197}$Au($n,\gamma$) and $^{56}$Fe($n, \gamma$) reactions were measured at CERN n\_TOF using an i-TED demonstrator based on only three position-sensitive detectors. Two \cds detectors were also used to benchmark the performance of i-TED. The i-TED prototype built for this study shows a factor of $\sim$3 higher detection sensitivity than state-of-the-art \cds detectors in the $\sim$10~keV neutron energy range of astrophysical interest. This paper explores also the perspectives of further enhancement in performance attainable with the final i-TED array consisting of twenty position-sensitive detectors and new analysis methodologies based on Machine-Learning techniques., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures

The only acceptable reason why measurements are irreversible and outcomes definite is the intrinsic definiteness and irreversibility of human sensory experience. While QBists deserve credit for their spirited defense of this position, Niels Bohr urged it nearly a century ago, albeit in such elliptic ways that the core of his message has been lost or distorted beyond recognition. Then as now, the objectivity of empirical science was called into question. It was defended by Bohr along the lines of Kant's (then) revolutionary theory of science, according to which the possibility of empirical science hinges on the possibility of thinking of experiences as experiences of a system of interacting, re-identifiable objects. What Bohr added to Kant's theory was his insight that empirical knowledge was not necessarily limited to what is directly accessible to the senses, and that, therefore, it does not have to be solely a knowledge of objects of sensible intuition. It can also be a knowledge of phenomena that are not objects of sensible intuition but instead are constituted by experimental contexts, which are objects of sensible intuition. Bohr's grounding of objectivity (or the objectivity consistent with quantum mechanics), however, is weaker than Kant's (or the objectivity consistent with Newtonian physics). This conclusion is based on an examination of Bohr's intentions in appealing to irreversible amplification effects or the sufficient size and weight of the measurement apparatus., Comment: 13 pages
