Search

Within the framework of investigating the link between central super massive black holes in the core of galaxies and the galaxies themselves, we detected a variable X-ray source in the center of CGCG 077-102 NED02, member of the CGCG 077-102 galaxy pair within the Abell 2063 galaxy cluster. Our goal was then to combine X-ray and optical data to demonstrate that this object harbors an active super massive black hole in its core, and to relate this to the dynamical status of the galaxy pair within the Abell 2063 cluster. We used Chandra and XMM-Newton archival data to derive the X-ray spectral shape and variability. We also obtained optical spectroscopy to detect the expected emission lines that are typically found in Active Galactic Nuclei. And we finally used public ZTF imaging data to investigate the optical variability. There is no evidence of multiple X-ray sources or extended component within CGCG 077-102 NED02. Single X-ray spectral models fit well the source. Non-random significant X-ray flux inter-observation X-ray variabilities were detected, between ~4days for short term variations and up to ~700days for long term variations. Optical spectroscopy points toward a passive galaxy for CGCG 077-102 NED01 and a Seyfert for CGCG 077-102 NED02. We did not detect short-term variability in the optical ZTF light curves. However, we found a significant long-term stochastic variability in the g-band that can be well described by the damped random walk model. Finally, the CGCG 077-102 galaxy pair is deeply embedded within the Abell 2063 potential, and has underwent the cluster influence for a long time. Our observations point toward a moderatly massive black hole in the center of CGCG 077-102 NED02, of ~10^6 Msol. We use topological data analysis as a tool to analyze the fit of mathematical models to experimental data. This study is built on data obtained from motion tracking groups of aphids in [Nilsen et al., PLOS One, 2013] and two random walk models that were proposed to describe the data. One model incorporates social interactions between the insects, and the second model is a control model that excludes these interactions. We compare data from each model to data from experiment by performing statistical tests based on three different sets of measures. First, we use time series of order parameters commonly used in collective motion studies. These order parameters measure the overall polarization and angular momentum of the group, and do not rely on a priori knowledge of the models that produced the data. Second, we use order parameter time series that do rely on a priori knowledge, namely average distance to nearest neighbor and percentage of aphids moving. Third, we use computational persistent homology to calculate topological signatures of the data. Analysis of the a priori order parameters indicates that the interactive model better describes the experimental data than the control model does. The topological approach performs as well as these a priori order parameters and better than the other order parameters, suggesting the utility of the topological approach in the absence of specific knowledge of mechanisms underlying the data., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PLOS One

We analyzed 17 galaxy clusters, and investigated, for the first time, the dependence of the SFR and sSFR as a function of projected distance (as a proxy for environment) and stellar mass for cluster galaxies in an intermediate-to-high redshift range ($0.4 < z < 0.9$). We used up to nine flux points (BVRIZYJHKs magnitudes), its errors and redshifts to compute M$_{\rm{star}}$, SFR and sSFR through spectral energy distribution fitting technique. We use a z-dependent sSFR value to distinguish star-forming (SF) from quiescent galaxies. To analyse the SFR and sSFR history we split our sample in two redshift bins: galaxies at $0.4 < z < 0.6$ and $0.6 < z < 0.9$. We separate the effects of environment and stellar mass on galaxies by comparing the properties of star-forming and quiescent galaxies at fixed environment (projected radius) and fixed stellar mass. For the selected spectroscopic sample of more than 500 galaxies, the well-known correlation between SFR and $M_{\rm star}$ is already in place at $z \sim 0.9$, for both SF and quenched galaxies. Our results are consistent with no evidence that SFR (or sSFR) depends on environment, suggesting that for cluster galaxies at an intermediate-to-high redshift range, mass is the primary characteristic that drives SFR., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The galaxy cluster RXJ1257$+$4738 at $z=0.866$ is one of the highest redshift clusters with a richness of multi-wavelength data, and thus a good target to study the star formation-density relation at early epochs. Using a sample of spectroscopically-confirmed cluster members, we derive the star formation rates of our galaxies using two methods, (I) the relation between SFR and total infrared luminosity extrapolated from the observed \textit{Spitzer} MIPS 24$\mu$m imaging data, and (II) spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting using the MAGPHYS code, including eight different bands. We show that, for this cluster, the SFR-density relation is very weak and seems to be dominated by the two central galaxies and the SFR presents a mild dependence on stellar mass, with more massive galaxies having higher SFR. However, the specific SFR (SSFR) decreases with stellar mass, meaning that more massive galaxies are forming less stars per unit of mass, and thus suggesting that the increase in star-forming members is driven by cluster assembly and infall. If the environment is somehow driving the SF, one would expect a relation between the SSFR and the cluster centric distance, but that is not the case. A possible scenario to explain this lack of correlation is the contamination by infalling galaxies in the inner part of the cluster which may be on their initial pass through the cluster center. We compute optical galaxy luminosity functions (GLFs) in the B, V, R, and I rest-frame bands for one of the largest medium-to-high-redshift (0.4 < z < 0.9) cluster samples to date in order to probe the abundance of faint galaxies in clusters. We also study how the GLFs depend on cluster redshift, mass, and substructure, and compare the GLFs of clusters with those of the field. We separately investigate the GLFs of blue and red-sequence (RS) galaxies to understand the evolution of different cluster populations. We find that the shapes of our GLFs are similar for the B, V, R, and I bands with a drop at the red GLF faint end that is more pronounced at high-redshift: alpha(red) ~ -0.5 at 0.40 < z < 0.65 and alpha(red) > 0.1 at 0.65 < z < 0.90. The blue GLFs have a steeper faint end (alpha(blue) ~ -1.6) than the red GLFs, that appears to be independent of redshift. For the full cluster sample, blue and red GLFs intersect at M(V) = -20, M(R) = -20.5, and M(I) = -20.3. A study of how galaxy types evolve with redshift shows that late type galaxies appear to become early types between z ~ 0.9 and today. Finally, the faint ends of the red GLFs of more massive clusters appear to be richer than less massive clusters, which is more typical of the lower redshift behaviour. Our results indicate that our clusters form at redshifts higher than z = 0.9 from galaxy structures that already have an established red sequence. Late type galaxies then appear to evolve into early types, enriching the red-sequence between this redshift and today. This effect is consistent with the evolution of the faint end slope of the red-sequence and the galaxy type evolution that we find. Finally, faint galaxies accreted from the field environment at all redshifts might have replaced the blue late type galaxies that converted into early types, explaining the lack of evolution in the faint end slopes of the blue GLFs., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

Constraints on the mass distribution in high-redshift clusters of galaxies are not currently very strong. We aim to constrain the mass profile, M(r), and dynamical status of the $z \sim 0.8$ LCDCS 0504 cluster of galaxies characterized by prominent giant gravitational arcs near its center. Our analysis is based on deep X-ray, optical, and infrared imaging, as well as optical spectroscopy. We model the mass distribution of the cluster with three different mass density profiles, whose parameters are constrained by the strong lensing features of the inner cluster region, by the X-ray emission from the intra-cluster medium, and by the kinematics of 71 cluster members. We obtain consistent M(r) determinations from three methods (dispersion-kurtosis, caustics and MAMPOSSt), out to the cluster virial radius and beyond. The mass profile inferred by the strong lensing analysis in the central cluster region is slightly above, but still consistent with, the kinematics estimate. On the other hand, the X-ray based M(r) is significantly below both the kinematics and strong lensing estimates. Theoretical predictions from $\Lambda$CDM cosmology for the concentration--mass relation are in agreement with our observational results, when taking into account the uncertainties in both the observational and theoretical estimates. There appears to be a central deficit in the intra-cluster gas mass fraction compared to nearby clusters. Despite the relaxed appearance of this cluster, the determinations of its mass profile by different probes show substantial discrepancies, the origin of which remains to be determined. The extension of a similar dynamical analysis to other clusters of the DAFT/FADA survey will allow to shed light on the possible systematics that affect the determination of mass profiles of high-z clusters, possibly related to our incomplete understanding of intracluster baryon physics., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, submitted to A&A, abstract shortened

We analyse the structures of all the clusters in the DAFT/FADA survey for which XMM-Newton and/or a sufficient number of galaxy redshifts in the cluster range is available, with the aim of detecting substructures and evidence for merging events. These properties are discussed in the framework of standard cold dark matter cosmology.XMM-Newton data were available for 32 clusters, for which we derive the X-ray luminosity and a global X-ray temperature for 25 of them. For 23 clusters we were able to fit the X-ray emissivity with a beta-model and subtract it to detect substructures in the X-ray gas. A dynamical analysis based on the SG method was applied to the clusters having at least 15 spectroscopic galaxy redshifts in the cluster range: 18 X-ray clusters and 11 clusters with no X-ray data. Only major substructures will be detected. Ten substructures were detected both in X-rays and by the SG method. Most of the substructures detected both in X-rays and with the SG method are probably at their first cluster pericentre approach and are relatively recent infalls. We also find hints of a decreasing X-ray gas density profile core radius with redshift. The percentage of mass included in substructures was found to be roughly constant with redshift with values of 5-15%, in agreement both with the general CDM framework and with the results of numerical simulations. Galaxies in substructures show the same general behaviour as regular cluster galaxies; however, in substructures, there is a deficiency of both late type and old stellar population galaxies. Late type galaxies with recent bursts of star formation seem to be missing in the substructures close to the bottom of the host cluster potential well. As part of our ongoing archival X-ray survey of galaxy clusters for tidal flares, we present evidence of an X-ray transient source within 1 arcmin of the core of Abell 1795. The extreme variability (a factor of nearly 50), luminosity (> 2 x 10^42 erg s^{-1}), long duration (> 5 years) and supersoft X-ray spectrum (< 0.1 keV) are characteristic signatures of a stellar tidal disruption event according to theoretical predictions and to existing X-ray observations, implying a massive >~10^5 M_sun black hole at the centre of that galaxy. The large number of X-ray source counts (~700) and long temporal baseline (~12 years with Chandra and XMM-Newton) make this one of the best-sampled examples of any tidal flare candidate to date. The transient may be the same EUV source originally found contaminating the diffuse ICM observations of Bowyer et al. (1999), which would make it the only tidal flare candidate with reported EUV observations and implies an early source luminosity 1-2 orders of magnitude greater. If the host galaxy is a cluster member then it must be a dwarf galaxy, an order of magnitude less massive than the quiescent galaxy Henize 2-10 which hosts a massive black hole that is difficult to reconcile with its low mass. The study of intracluster light can help us to understand the mechanisms taking place in galaxy clusters, and to place constraints on the cluster formation history and physical properties. However, owing to the intrinsic faintness of ICL emission, most searches and detailed studies of ICL have been limited to redshifts z<0.4.We search for ICL in a subsample of ten clusters detected by the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS), at redshifts 0.4

We have developed a method for detecting clusters in large imaging surveys, based on the detection of structures in galaxy density maps made in slices of photometric redshifts. This method was first applied to the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) Deep 1 field by Mazure et al. (2007), then to all the Deep and Wide CFHTLS fields available in the T0004 data release by Adami et al. (2010). The validity of the cluster detection rate was estimated by applying the same procedure to galaxies from the Millennium simulation. Here we analyse with the same method the full CFHTLS Wide survey, based on the T0006 data release. In a total area of 154 deg2, we have detected 4061 candidate clusters at 3sigma or above (6802 at 2sigma and above), in the redshift range 0.1<=z<=1.15, with estimated mean masses between 1.3 10^14 and 12.6 10^14 M_solar. This catalogue of candidate clusters will be available online via VizieR. We compare our detections with those made in various CFHTLS analyses with other methods. By stacking a subsample of clusters, we show that this subsample has typical cluster characteristics (colour-magnitude relation, galaxy luminosity function). We also confirm that the cluster-cluster correlation function is comparable to that obtained for other cluster surveys and analyze large scale filamentary galaxy distributions. We have increased the number of known optical high redshift cluster candidates by a large factor, an important step towards obtaining reliable cluster counts to measure cosmological parameters. As a contribution to the understanding of the dark energy concept, the Dark energy American French Team (DAFT, in French FADA) has started a large project to characterize statistically high redshift galaxy clusters, infer cosmological constraints from Weak Lensing Tomography, and understand biases relevant for constraining dark energy and cluster physics in future cluster and cosmological experiments. The purpose of this paper is to establish the basis of reference for the photo-z determination used in all our subsequent papers, including weak lensing tomography studies. This project is based on a sample of 91 high redshift (z>0.4), massive clusters with existing HST imaging, for which we are presently performing complementary multi-wavelength imaging. This allows us in particular to estimate spectral types and determine accurate photometric redshifts for galaxies along the lines of sight to the first ten clusters for which all the required data are available down to a limit of I_AB=24/24.5 with the LePhare software. The accuracy in redshift is of the order of 0.05 for the range 0.2

In order to enlarge publicly available optical cluster catalogs, in particular at high redshift, we have performed a systematic search for clusters of galaxies in the CFHTLS. We used the Le Phare photometric redshifts for the galaxies detected with magnitude limits of i'=25 and 23 for the Deep and Wide fields respectively. We then constructed galaxy density maps in photometric redshift bins of 0.1 based on an adaptive kernel technique and detected structures with SExtractor. In order to assess the validity of our cluster detection rates, we applied a similar procedure to galaxies in Millennium simulations. We measured the correlation function of our cluster candidates. We analyzed large scale properties and substructures by applying a minimal spanning tree algorithm both to our data and to the Millennium simulations. We have detected 1200 candidate clusters with various masses (minimal masses between 1.0 10$^{13}$ and 5.5 10$^{13}$ and mean masses between 1.3 10$^{14}$ and 12.6 10$^{14}$ M$_\odot$), thus notably increasing the number of known high redshift cluster candidates. We found a correlation function for these objects comparable to that obtained for high redshift cluster surveys. We also show that the CFHTLS deep survey is able to trace the large scale structure of the universe up to z$\geq$1. Our detections are fully consistent with those made in various CFHTLS analyses with other methods. The cosmic time around the z~1 redshift range appears crucial in the cluster and galaxy evolution, since it is probably the epoch of the first mature galaxy clusters. Our knowledge of the properties of the galaxy populations in these clusters is limited because only a handful of z~1 clusters are presently known. In this framework, we report the discovery of a z~0.87 cluster and study its properties at various wavelengths. We gathered X-ray and optical data (imaging and spectroscopy), and near and far infrared data (imaging) in order to confirm the cluster nature of our candidate, to determine its dynamical state, and to give insight on its galaxy population evolution. Our candidate structure appears to be a massive z~0.87 dynamically young cluster with an atypically high X-ray temperature as compared to its X-ray luminosity. It exhibits a significant percentage ~90% of galaxies that are also detected in the 24micron band. The cluster RXJ1257.2+4738 appears to be still in the process of collapsing. Its relatively high temperature is probably the consequence of significant energy input into the intracluster medium besides the regular gravitational infall contribution. Environmental effects have an important influence on cluster galaxies, but studies at very faint magnitudes (R>21) are almost exclusively based on imaging. We present here a very deep spectroscopic survey of galaxies on the line of sight to Coma, based on redshifts obtained with VLT/VIMOS for 715 galaxies in the unprecedented magnitude range 2122 galaxies. This trend is less clear for field galaxies, suggesting that part of the faint Coma galaxies could have been recently injected from the field following the NGC 4911 group infall. We present a list of five Ultra Compact Dwarf galaxy candidates. We also globally confirm spectroscopically our previous results on the galaxy luminosity functions and find that dwarf galaxies follow a red sequence similar to that drawn by bright galaxies. Using archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data on 35 galaxy clusters, we measured average temperature and metallicity profiles for clusters based separated by temperature, cooling time, and redshift. This project is the continuation of our study of faint Low Surface Brightness Galaxies (fLSBs) in one of the densest nearby galaxy regions known, the Coma cluster. Our goal is to improve our understanding of the nature of these objects by comparing the broad band spectral energy distribution with population synthesis models. The data were obtained with the MEGACAM and CFH12K cameras at the CFHT. We used the resulting photometry in 5 broad band filters (u*, B, V, R, and I), that included new u*-band data, to fit spectral models. With these spectral fits we inferred a cluster membership criterium, as well as the ages, dust extinctions, and photometric types of these fLSBs. We show that about half of the Coma cluster fLSBs have a spectral energy distribution well represented in our template library while the other half present a flux deficit at ultraviolet wavelengths. Among the well represented, ~80% are probably part of the Coma cluster based on their spectral energy distribution. They are relatively young (younger than 2.3 Gyrs for 90% of the sample) non-starburst objects. The later their type, the younger fLSBs are. A significant part of the fLSBs are quite dusty objects. fLSBs are low stellar mass objects (the later their type the less massive they are), with stellar masses comparable to globular clusters for the faintest ones. We have then searched for preferential orientations of faint galaxies in the Coma cluster (down I_Vega~-11.5). By applying a deconvolution method to deep u* and I band images of the Coma cluster, we were able to recover orientations down to faint magnitudes. No preferential orientations are found in more than 95% of the cluster, and the brighter the galaxies, the fewer preferential orientations. The minor axes of late type galaxies are radially oriented along a northeast -southwest direction and are oriented north-south in the western X-ray sub- structures. For early type galaxies, in the western regions showing significant preferential orientations, galaxy major axes are oriented perpendicularly to the north-south direction. In the eastern significant region and close to NGC 4889, galaxy major axes also point toward the 2 cluster dominant galaxies. In the southern significant regions, galaxy planes are tangential with respect to the clustercentric direction, except close to (alpha=194.8, delta=27.65) where the orientation is close to -15deg. Part of the orientations of the minor axes of late type galaxies and of the major axes of early type galaxies can be explained by a tidal torque model applied to cosmological filaments and local merging directions. Another part (close to NGC4889) can be accounted for by collimated infalls. For early type galaxies, the (alpha=194.8, delta=27.65) region shows orientations that probably result from processes involving induced star formation., Comment: Accepted in A&A

We investigate the Coma cluster galaxy luminosity function (GLF) at faint magnitudes, in particular in the u* band by applying photometric redshift techniques applied to deep u*, B, V, R, I images covering a region of ~1deg2 (R 24). Global and local GLFs in the B, V, R and I bands obtained with photometric redshift selection are consistent with our previous results based on a statistical background subtraction. In the area covered only by the u* image, the GLF was also derived after applying a statistical background subtraction. The GLF in the u* band shows an increase of the faint end slope towards the outer regions of the cluster (from alpha~1 in the cluster center to alpha~2 in the cluster periphery). This could be explained assuming a short burst of star formation in these galaxies when entering the cluster. The analysis of the multicolor type spatial distribution reveals that late type galaxies are distributed in clumps in the cluster outskirts, where X-ray substructures are also detected and where the GLF in the u* band is steeper., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures in jpeg format, accepted in A&A

We report on our search for distant clusters of galaxies based on optical and X-ray follow up observations of X-ray candidates from the SHARC survey. Based on the assumption that the absence of bright optical or radio counterparts to possibly extended X-ray sources could be distant clusters. We have obtained deep optical images and redshifts for several of these objects and analyzed archive XMM-Newton or Chandra data where applicable. In our list of candidate clusters, two are probably galaxy structures at redshifts of z$\sim$0.51 and 0.28. Seven other structures are possibly galaxy clusters between z$\sim$0.3 and 1. Three sources are identified with QSOs and are thus likely to be X-ray point sources, and six more also probably fall in this category. One X-ray source is spurious or variable. For 17 other sources, the data are too sparse at this time to put forward any hypothesis on their nature. We also serendipitously detected a cluster at z=0.53 and another galaxy concentration which is probably a structure with a redshift in the [0.15-0.6] range. We discuss these results within the context of future space missions to demonstrate the necessity of a wide field of view telescope optimized for the 0.5-2 keV range., Comment: Accepted in A&A

We report on a search for faint (R total magnitude fainter than 21) and low surface brightness galaxies (R central surface brightness fainter than ~24) (fLSBs) in a 0.72x0.82 deg2 area centered on the Coma cluster. We analyzed deep B and R band CCD imaging obtained using the CFH12K camera at CFHT and found 735 fLSBs. The total B magnitudes, at the Coma cluster redshift, range from -13 to -9 with B central surface brightness as faint as 27 mag/arcsec2. Using empty field comparisons, we show that most of these fLSBs are probably inside the Coma cluster. We present the results of comparing the projected fLSB distributions with the distributions of normal galaxies and with known X-ray over densities. We also investigate their projected distribution relative to their location in the color magnitude relation. Colors of fLSBs vary between B-R~0.8 and ~1.4 for 2/3 of the sample and this part is consistent with the known CMR red-sequence for bright (R<18) ellipticals in Coma. These fLSBs are likely to have followed the same evolution as giant ellipticals, which is consistent with a simple feedback/collapse formation and a passive evolution. These fLSBs are mainly clustered around NGC4889. We found two other distinct fLSB populations. We have obtained deep and wide field imaging of the Coma cluster of galaxies with the CFH12K camera at CFHT in the B, V, R and I filters. In this paper, we present the observations, data reduction, catalogs and first scientific results. We investigated the quality of our data by internal and external literature comparisons. We also checked the realisation of the observational requirements we set. Our observations cover two partially overlapping areas of $42 \times 28$ arcmin$^2$, leading to a total area of 0.72 $\times$ 0.82 deg$^2$. We have produced catalogs of objects that cover a range of more than 10 magnitudes and are complete at the 90% level at B$\sim$25, V$\sim$24, R$\sim$24 and I$\sim$23.5 for stellar-like objects, and at B$\sim$22, V$\sim$21, R$\sim$20.75 and I$\sim$20.5 for faint low-surface-brightness galaxy-like objects. Magnitudes are in good agreement with published values from R$\sim$16 to R$\sim$25. The photometric uncertainties are of the order of 0.1 magnitude at R$\sim$20 and of 0.3 magnitude at R$\sim$25. Astrometry is accurate to 0.5~arcsec and also in good agreement with published data. Our catalog provides a rich dataset that can be mined for years to come to gain new insights into the formation and evolution of the Coma cluster and its galaxy population. As an illustration of the data quality, we examine the bright part of the Colour Magnitude Relation (B-R versus R) derived from the catalog and find that it is in excellent agreement with that derived for galaxies with redshifts in the Coma cluster, and with previous CMRs estimated in the literature., Comment: A&A, 2006, 451, 1159. This is a report of Chandra, XMM-Newton, HST and ARC observations of an extended X-ray source at z = 0.59. The apparent member galaxies range from spiral to elliptical and are all relatively red (i'-Ks about 3). We interpret this object to be a fossil group based on the difference between the brightness of the first and second brightest cluster members in the i'-band, and because the rest-frame bolometric X-ray luminosity is about 9.2x10^43 h70^-2 erg s^-1. This makes Cl 1205+44 the highest redshift fossil group yet reported. The system also contains a central double-lobed radio galaxy which appears to be growing via the accretion of smaller galaxies. A series of sharp PL lines at 1.0 eV is observed in codoped GaN and attributed to the intra d-shell transition 4T2(F)-4T1(F) of Mn4+ ions. PLE spectrum of the Mn4+ [4T2(F)-4T1(F)] luminescence reveals intra center excitation processes via the excited states of Mn4+ ions. PLE peaks observed at 1.79 and 2.33 eV are attributed to the intra-d-shell 4T1(P)-4T1(F) and 4A2(F)-4T1(F) transitions of Mn4+, respectively. In addition to the intra shell excitation processes, a broad PLE band involving charge-transfer transition of the Mn4+/3+ deep level is observed, which is well described by the Lucovsky model. As determined from the onset of this PLE band, the position of the Mn4+/3+ deep level is 1.11 eV above the valence band maximum, which is consistent with prior theory using ab initio calculations. We have obtained wide field images of the Coma cluster in the B, V, R and I bands with the CFH12K camera at CFHT. In order to search for large scale diffuse emission, we have applied to these images an iterative multi scale wavelet analysis and reconstruction technique which allowed to model all the sources (stars and galaxies) and subtract them from the original images. We found various concentrations of diffuse emission present in the central zone around the central galaxies NGC4874 and NGC4889. We characterize the positions, sizes and colors of these concentrations. Some sources do not seem to have strong star formation, while another one probably exhibits spiral-like color. One possible origin for the star forming diffuse emission sources is that in the region of the two main galaxies NGC4874 and NGC4889 spiral galaxies have recently been disrupted and star formation is still active in the dispersed material. We also use the characteristics of the sources of diffuse emission to trace the cluster dynamics. The optical properties of Mn-Mg codoped epitaxial GaN were studied. Addition of Mg acceptors quenches the weak manganese-related photoluminescence (PL) band at 1.3 eV in GaN:Mn and a series of sharp PL peaks are observed at 1 eV in codoped epilayers. The change in PL spectra indicates that Mg addition stabilizes the Mn4+ charge state by decreasing the Fermi level. The 1 eV PL peaks are tentatively attributed to intra center transitions involving Mn4+ ions. Spin allowed 3d-shell 4T2-4T1 transitions and their phonon replicas are involved. The relative intensities of the sharp peaks are strongly dependent on the excitation wavelength, indicating the optically active Mn4+ centers involved in the separate peaks are different. We have analyzed the galaxy number density and luminosity density profiles of rich clusters of galaxies from redshifts z=0 to z=0.5. We show that the luminosity profile computed with bright galaxies is significantly cusped in the center of the clusters, whatever the redshift. This is in agreement with the dark matter profiles predicted by numerical simulations. The galaxy number density profile for the bright galaxies is fitted equally well with a core model or a cusped model. In contrast, the luminosity and the galaxy number density profiles of the fainter galaxies are significantly better fitted by a core rather than a cusp model. We did not detect any statistically significant different fits when applied to data in range from z=0 to z=0.5. The difference in profile between faint and bright galaxies may be due to the rapid (relative to the age of the universe at z=0 versus z=0.5) destruction of the faint galaxies by tidal forces and merging events in the denser central regions of the clusters. This process could erase the cusp by turning faint galaxies into diffuse light. In this case, the galaxies (with a cusp visible in the bright galaxy number density and mainly in luminosity profiles) would trace the total mass distribution., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted in A&A

In this paper, we present an analysis of the dynamics and segregation of galaxies in rich clusters from z~0.32 to z~0.48 taken from the CFHT Optical PDCS (COP) survey and from the CNOC survey (Carlberg et al. 1997). Our results from the COP survey are based upon the recent observational work of Adami et al. (2000) and Holden et al. (2000) and use new spectroscopic and photometric data on six clusters selected from the Palomar Distant Cluster Survey (PDCS; Postman et al. 1996). We have compared the COP and CNOC samples to the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey (ENACS: z~0.07). Our sample shows that the z<0.4 clusters have the same velocity dispersion versus magnitude, morphological type and radius relationships as nearby Abell clusters. The z~0.48 clusters exhibit, however, departures from these relations. Furthermore, there appears to be a higher fraction of late-type (or bluer, e.g. Butcher and Oemler, 1984) galaxies in the distant clusters compared to the nearby ones. The classical scenario in which massive galaxies virialize before they evolve from late into early type explain our observations. In such a scenario, the clusters of our sample began to form before a redshift of ~0.8 and the late-type galaxy population had a continuous infall into the clusters., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted in A&A

We present the results of a set of simulations designed to quantify the selection function of the Bright SHARC survey for distant clusters. The statistical significance of the simulations relied on the creation of thousands of artificial clusters with redshifts and luminosities in the range 0.25

We investigate in this paper the error on the cluster redshift estimate as a function of: (1) the number of galaxy structures along the line of sight; (2) the morphology of the clusters (regular/substructures); (3) the nature of the observed galaxies (cD/normal galaxies); (4) the number of observed galaxies; and (5) the distance of the clusters. We find that if we use cD galaxies we have errors of less than 2% (at the 1-$\sigma$ level) for the cluster distances except when the clusters are very complex. In those cases when we use five redshift measurements along the cluster lines of sight to compute the mean redshift, the mean redshift estimate error is less than 5% for the clusters closer than z=0.30. We present the first dynamical study of the optically selected Palomar Distant Cluster Survey (PDCS). We show that eleven out of twelve PDCS clusters we observed are real over-densities of galaxies. Most clusters have velocity dispersions appropriate for clusters of galaxies. However, we find a fraction (1/3) of objects in the PDCS which have velocity dispersions in the range of groups of galaxies (200 +/- 100 km/s) but have richnesses appropriate for clusters of galaxies. We measure the richness function, X-ray luminosity function (using both the detections and upper limits), and the mass function derived from our velocity dispersions. We confirm that the space density, as a function of richness, of clusters of galaxies in the PDCS is ~5 times that of the Abell catalog. Excluding the above fraction of 1/3 of objects with low velocity dispersions, we measure a space density ~3 times that of the Abell catalog for equivalent mass clusters of galaxies. Our space density estimates are in agreement with other low-redshift, optically-selected cluster surveys such as the EDCC, APM and EDCC2, which raises the possibility that the Abell catalog is incomplete. Our X-ray luminosity function agrees with other measurements based on both X-ray and optically selected samples, so we find that the PDCS does not miss clusters of galaxies that would be found in an X-ray selected survey. Our resulting mass function, centered around 10e14 Msun/h, agrees with the expectations from such surveys as the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology cluster survey, though errors on our mass measurements are too large to constrain cosmological parameters., Comment: 47 pages, LaTeX, using AASTEX v 5.0.2 preprint style. This paper presents and gives the COP (COP: CFHT Optical PDCS; CFHT: Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope; PDCS: Palomar Distant Cluster Survey) survey data. We describe our photometric and spectroscopic observations with the MOS multi-slit spectrograph at the CFH telescope. A comparison of the photometry from the PDCS (Postman et al. 1996) catalogs and from the new images we have obtained at the CFH telescope shows that the different magnitude systems can be cross-calibrated. After identification between the PDCS catalogues and our new images, we built catalogues with redshift, coordinates and V, I and Rmagnitudes. We have classified the galaxies along the lines of sight into field and structure galaxies using a gap technique (Katgert et al. 1996). Our previous study of the faint end (R$\leq$21.5) of the galaxy luminosity function (GLF) was based on spectroscopic data in a small region near the Coma cluster center. In this previous study Adami et al. (1998) suggested, with moderate statistical significance, that the number of galaxies actually belonging to the cluster was much smaller than expected. This led us to increase our spectroscopic sample. Here, we have improved the statistical significance of the results of the Coma GLF faint end study (R$\leq$22.5) by using a sample of 85 redshifts. This includes both new spectroscopic data and a literature compilation. The relatively small number of faint galaxies belonging to Coma that was suggested by Adami et al. (1998) and Secker et al. (1998) has been confirmed with these new observations. We also confirm that the color-magnitude relation is not well suited for finding the galaxies inside the Coma cluster core, close to the center at magnitudes fainter than R$\sim$19. We show that there is an enhancement in the Coma line of sight of field galaxies compared to classical field counts. This can be explained by the contribution of groups and of a distant $z\sim 0.5$ cluster along the line of sight. The result is that the Coma GLF appears to turn-over or at least to become flat for the faint galaxies. We have performed simulations of the effectiveness of the Serendipitous High-redshift Archival ROSAT Cluster (SHARC) survey for various model universes. We have conducted a redshift survey of sixteen cluster candidates from the Palomar Distant Cluster Survey (PDCS) to determine both the density of PDCS clusters and the accuracy of the estimated redshifts presented in the PDCS catalog (Postman et. al. 1996). We find that the matched-filter redshift estimate presented in the PDCS has an error sigma_z = 0.06 in the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.35 based on eight cluster candidates with three or more concordant galaxy redshifts. We measure the low redshift (0.1 < z < 0.35) space density of PDCS clusters to be 31.3^{+30.5}_{-17.1} * E-06 h^3 Mpc^-3 (68% confidence limits for a Poisson distribution) for Richness Class 1 systems. We find a tentative space density of 10.4^{+23.4}_{-8.4}* E-06 h^3 Mpc^-3 for Richness Class 2 clusters. These densities compare favorably with those found for the whole of the PDCS and support the finding that the space density of clusters in the PDCS is a factor of ~5 above that of clusters in the Abell catalog (Abell 1958; Abell, Corwin, and Olowin 1989). These new space density measurements were derived as independently as possible from the original PDCS analysis and therefore, demonstrate the robustness of the original work. Based on our survey, we conclude that the PDCS matched-filter algorithm is successful in detecting real clusters and in estimating their true redshifts in the redshift range we surveyed., Comment: 23 pages with 4 figures and 3 seperate tables. We present the Bright SHARC (Serendipitous High-Redshift Archival ROSAT Cluster) Survey, which is an objective search for serendipitously detected extended X-ray sources in 460 deep ROSAT PSPC pointings. The Bright SHARC Survey covers an area of 178.6 sq.deg and has yielded 374 extended sources. We discuss the X-ray data reduction, the candidate selection and present results from our on-going optical follow-up campaign. The optical follow-up concentrates on the brightest 94 of the 374 extended sources and is now 97% complete. We have identified thirty-seven clusters of galaxies, for which we present redshifts and luminosities. The clusters span a redshift range of 0.0696

We present here initial results on the X-ray Cluster Luminosity Function (XCLF) from the Bright SHARC sample of distant X-ray clusters of galaxies. This sample is 97% complete in its optical identifications and contains 12 X-ray luminous clusters in the range 0.3 < z < 0.83 (median z = 0.42) and 1.1 < Lx(44) < 8.5 erg/s [0.5-2.0 keV]. We present a preliminary selection function for the Bright SHARC based on Monte Carlo simulations. Using this selection function, we have computed the Bright SHARC XCLF and find it to be fully consistent with a non-evolving XCLF to Lx(44) = 5 erg/s and z = 0.7. At Lx(44) > 5 erg/s, we find evidence for a deficit of clusters compared to that expected from a non-evolving XCLF. We detect only one such cluster in the redshift range 0.3 < z < 0.7 when we would expect 4.9 clusters based on the local XCLF of De Grandi et al. (1999). The statistical significance of this deficit is 96%. To increase the statistical significance of this possible deficit, we have combined the Bright SHARC and the 160 sq. deg. survey of Vikhlinin et al (1998a). This joint survey covers 260 sq. degs. and contains only one confirmed 0.3 < z < 0.7, Lx(44) > 5 erg/s cluster, while we would expect 7.6 such clusters based on the local XCLF (De Grandi et al. 1999). The statistical significance of the deficit in this joint survey increases to 99.5%. These results remain preliminary because of incompletenesses in the optical follow-up and uncertainties in the local XCLF., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in the Letters of the Astrophysical Journal. From the Press-Schechter mass function and the empirical X-ray cluster luminosity-temperature (L-T) relation, we construct an X-ray cluster luminosity function that can be applied to the growing number of high-redshift, X-ray cluster luminosity catalogs to constrain cosmological parameters. In this paper, we apply this luminosity function to the Einstein Medium Sensitivity Survey (EMSS) and the ROSAT Brightest Cluster Sample (BCS) luminosity function to constrain the value of Omega_m. In the case of the EMSS, we find a factor of 4 - 5 fewer X-ray clusters at redshifts above z = 0.4 than below this redshift at luminosities above L_X = 7 x 10^44 erg s^-1 (0.3 - 3.5 keV), which suggests that the X-ray cluster luminosity function has evolved above L_*. At lower luminosities, this luminosity function evolves only minimally, if at all. Using Bayesian inference, we find that the degree of evolution at high luminosities suggests that Omega_m = 0.96(+0.36,-0.32), given the best-fit L-T relation of Reichart, Castander, & Nichol (1998). When we account for the uncertainty in how the empirical L-T relation evolves with redshift, we find that Omega_m is approximately 1.0 +/- 0.4. We have measured fluxes or flux limits for 31 of the 79 cluster candidates in the Palomar Distant Cluster Survey (PDCS) using archival ROSAT/PSPC pointed observations. Our X-ray survey reaches a flux limit of $\simeq 3 \times 10^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ (0.4 - 2.0 keV), which corresponds to luminosities of $L_x\simeq 5 \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ ($H_o$ = 50 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, $q_o$ = ${1/2}$), if we assume the PDCS estimated redshifts. Of the 31 cluster candidates, we detect six at a signal-to-noise greater than three. We estimate that $2.9^{+3.3}_{-1.4}$ (90% confidence limits) of these six detections are a result of X-ray emission from objects unrelated to the PDCS cluster candidates. The net surface density of X-ray emitting cluster candidates in our survey, $1.71^{+0.91}_{-2.19}$ clusters deg$^{-2}$, agrees with that of other, X-ray selected, surveys. It is possible, given the large error on our contamination rate, that we have not detected X-ray emission from any of our observed PDCS cluster candidates. We find no statistically significant difference between the X-ray luminosities of PDCS cluster candidates and those of Abell clusters of similar optical richness. This suggests that the PDCS contains objects at high redshift similar to the low redshift clusters in the Abell catalogs. We show that the PDCS cluster candidates are not bright X-ray sources, the average luminosity of the six detected candidates is only $\bar{L_x}=0.9\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (0.4-2.0 keV). A next generation atmospheric Cherenkov observatory is described based on the Whipple Observatory $\gamma$-ray telescope. A total of nine such imaging telescopes will be deployed in an array that will permit the maximum versatility and give high sensitivity in the 50 GeV - 50 TeV band (with maximum sensitivity from 100 GeV to 10 TeV)., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in proceedings of 25th ICRC (Durban)

We present the results of OSSE observations of the soft gamma ray continuum emission from the Galactic plane at longitude 95 degrees. Emission is detected between 50 and 600 keV where the spectrum is fit well by a power law with photon index -2.6+-0.3 and flux (4.0+-0.5) 10^{-2} photons/s/cm^2/rad/MeV at 100 keV. This spectral shape in this range is similar to that found for the continuum emission from the inner Galaxy but the amplitude is lower by a factor of four. This emission is either due to unresolved and previously unknown point sources or it is of diffuse origin, or a combination of the two. Simultaneous observations with OSSE and smaller field of view instruments operating in the soft gamma ray energy band, such as XTE or SAX, would help resolve this issue. If it is primarily diffuse emission due to nonthermal electron bremsstrahlung, as is the >1 MeV Galactic ridge continuum, then the power in low energy cosmic ray electrons exceeds that of the nuclear component of the cosmic rays by an order of magnitude. This would have profound implications for the origin of cosmic rays and the energetics of the interstellar medium. We report the results of a CGRO multi-instrument series of observations of the unidentified gamma-ray source 2CG 135+1 and of its possible counterpart, the peculiar radio source GT 0236+610 coincident with the Be star LSI+61 303. We monitored the time variable radio source GT 0236+610 during the CGRO observations. OSSE and COMPTEL data were obtained during the period May-June 1994, and BATSE data for the period April 1994-January 1995. We discuss the time variability of the gamma-ray emission and spectral properties of 2CG~135+1. Understanding the nature of 2CG 135+1 may be of crucial importance for the interpretation of a class of unidentified time variable gamma-ray sources in the Galaxy., Comment: 6 pages, to appear in Astronomy & Astrophys. (Shortened Abstract) We present new X-ray data taken from the ROSAT PSPC pointing archive for 21 clusters in the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey (EMSS). We have supplemented these data with new optical follow-up observations found in the literature and overall, 32 of the original 67 z>0.14 EMSS clusters now have new information. Using this improved EMSS sample, we have re-determined the EMSS X-ray Cluster Luminosity Function as a function of redshift. We have removed potential mis-classifications and included our new measurements of the clusters X-ray luminosities and redshifts. We find similar luminosity functions to those originally presented by Henry etal (1992); albeit with two important differences. First, we show that the original low redshift EMSS luminosity function is insufficiently constrained. Secondly, the power law shape of our new determination of the high redshift EMSS luminosity function (z=0.3 to 0.6) has a shallower slope than that seen by Henry etal. We have quantified the degree of evolution seen in the X-ray cluster luminosity using several statistical tests. The most restrictive analysis indicates that our low and high redshift EMSS luminosity functions are statistically different at only the 95% level. However, other tests indicate that these luminosity functions differ by as little as one sigma. These data are therefore, consistent with no evolution in the X-ray cluster luminosity function out to z=0.5., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures. Latex. Accepted for publication in ApJ. We present the results of a search for low surface brightness galaxies (hereafter LSBs) in the Coma cluster. Bernstein et al. report on deep CCD observations in R of a 7.5 by 7.5 arcminute region in the core of the Coma cluster, and we extend this work by finding and measuring 36 LSBs within this field. We report both R and Bj results. The average magnitude based on the best fit exponential to the images is 22.5 (R) and the typical exponential scale is 1.3 arcseconds. The range of exponential scales is 0.4 to 1.2 kpc (distance modulus 34.89), and the range of central surface brightnesses is 24 to 27.4 R magnitudes per square arcsecond. Many of these objects are similar in terms of scale length and central surface brightness to those found by others in nearby clusters such as Fornax (Bothun, Impey and Malin), as well as in the low luminosity end of the dwarfs cataloged in the review by Ferguson and Binggeli. We find no evidence for a dependence of color on central surface brightness or on distance from the D galaxies or the X-ray center of Coma. We also find that these LSBs make a small contribution to the overall mass of the cluster. We report on the progress of our search for serendipitous distant X-ray galaxy clusters in the ROSAT PSPC pointed observations archive. The initial aim of our work is to measure the X-ray luminosity function of clusters down to 4 x 10^-14 erg cm^-2 s^-1 and so test the claims of cluster evolution at moderate redshifts. We have R band images and spectroscopy for 45 extended sources detected in 50 of the 100 deepest southern fields. A preliminary analysis suggests we cover a range of distances, from nearby clusters to possible distant clusters, z \simeq 1.0., Comment: 2 pages, including 1 Postscript figure.
