The negatively-charged nitrogen vacancy (NV$^{-}$) center in diamond is widely used for quantum sensing since the sensitivity of the spin triplet in the electronic ground state to external perturbations such as strain and electromagnetic fields make it an excellent probe for changes in these perturbations. The spin state can be measured through optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR), which is most commonly achieved by detecting the photoluminescence (PL) after exciting the spin-triplet transition. Recently, methods have been proposed and demonstrated that use the absorption of the infrared singlet transition at 1042 nm instead. These methods however require cryogenic temperatures or external cavities to enhance the absorption signal. Here, we report on our optimization efforts of the magnetometer sensitivity at room temperature and without cavities. We reach sensitivities of 18 pT$/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$, surpassing previously reported values. We also report on a defect that is native to CVD-grown diamond and thus absent in HPHT diamond, the excitation of which impacts the measured singlet absorption signal., Comment: 6 pages with 4 figures

Levitated ferromagnets act as ultraprecise magnetometers, which can exhibit high quality factors due to their excellent isolation from the environment. These instruments can be utilized in searches for ultralight dark matter candidates, such as axionlike dark matter or dark-photon dark matter. In addition to being sensitive to an axion-photon coupling or kinetic mixing, which produce physical magnetic fields, ferromagnets are also sensitive to the effective magnetic field (or ``axion wind") produced by an axion-electron coupling. While the dynamics of a levitated ferromagnet in response to a DC magnetic field have been well studied, all of these couplings would produce AC fields. In this work, we study the response of a ferromagnet to an applied AC magnetic field and use these results to project their sensitivity to axion and dark-photon dark matter. We pay special attention to the direction of motion induced by an applied AC field, in particular, whether it precesses around the applied field (similar to an electron spin) or librates in the plane of the field (similar to a compass needle). We show that existing levitated ferromagnet setups can already have comparable sensitivity to an axion-electron coupling as comagnetometer or torsion balance experiments. Quantum mechanics predicts that massive particles exhibit wave-like behavior. Matterwave interferometry has been able to validate such predictions through ground-breaking experiments involving microscopic systems like atoms and molecules. The wavefunction of such systems coherently extends over a distance much larger than their size, an achievement that is incredibly challenging for massive and more complex objects. Yet, reaching similar level of coherent diffusion will enable tests of fundamental physics at the genuinely macroscopic scale, as well as the development of quantum sensing apparata of great sensitivity. We report on experimentally achieving an unprecedented degree of position diffusion in a massive levitated optomechanical system through frequency modulation of the trapping potential. By starting with a pre-cooled state of motion and employing a train of sudden pulses yet of mild modulation depth, we surpass previously attained values of position diffusion in this class of systems to reach diffusion lengths that exceed the physical dimensions of the trapped nanoparticle., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, RevTeX4-2

Despite extensive research on jamming attacks on wireless communication systems, the potential of machine learning for amplifying the threat of such attacks, or our ability to mitigate them, remains largely untapped. A key obstacle to such research has been the absence of a suitable framework. To resolve this obstacle, we release PyJama, a fully-differentiable open-source library that adds jamming and anti-jamming functionality to NVIDIA Sionna. We demonstrate the utility of PyJama (i) for realistic MIMO simulations by showing examples that involve forward error correction, OFDM waveforms in time and frequency, realistic channel models, and mobility; and (ii) for learning to jam. Specifically, we use stochastic gradient descent to optimize jamming power allocation over an OFDM resource grid. In this work, we study how well the learned weights of a neural network utilize the space available to them. This notion is related to capacity, but additionally incorporates the interaction of the network architecture with the dataset. Most learned weights appear to be full rank, and are therefore not amenable to low rank decomposition. This deceptively implies that the weights are utilizing the entire space available to them. We propose a simple data-driven transformation that projects the weights onto the subspace where the data and the weight interact. This preserves the functional mapping of the layer and reveals its low rank structure. In our findings, we conclude that most models utilize a fraction of the available space. For instance, for ViTB-16 and ViTL-16 trained on ImageNet, the mean layer utilization is 35% and 20% respectively. Our transformation results in reducing the parameters to 50% and 25% respectively, while resulting in less than 0.2% accuracy drop after fine-tuning. The relation between (a fragment of) assumption-based argumentation (ABA) and logic programs (LPs) under stable model semantics is well-studied. However, for obtaining this relation, the ABA framework needs to be restricted to being flat, i.e., a fragment where the (defeasible) assumptions can never be entailed, only assumed to be true or false. Here, we remove this restriction and show a correspondence between non-flat ABA and LPs with negation as failure in their head. We then extend this result to so-called set-stable ABA semantics, originally defined for the fragment of non-flat ABA called bipolar ABA. We showcase how to define set-stable semantics for LPs with negation as failure in their head and show the correspondence to set-stable ABA semantics.

Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) are photon detectors comprised of superconducting LC resonators with unique resonant frequencies corresponding to their geometrical structure. As each pixel has its own geometry, electromagnetic simulations by hand of every pixel in a kilo-pixel array are impractical. Simulating fewer pixels and interpolating in between risks reduced pixel yield in arrays due to overlapping resonant frequencies. We introduce a new software called AEM (Automated Electromagnetic MKID simulations) that automates the constructions and simulations of every simulated MKID pixel in an array according to specified resonant frequencies and a Qc range. We show automated designs to have an increased pixel yield (avoiding loses due to interpolation completely), increased accuracy in resonance frequency and Qc values when compared to interpolated structures. We also demonstrate a simulated trial of AEM for 100 MKIDs between 4 & 8 GHz to produce MKIDs with accuracies of +-0.2 MHz with a runtime of 10 hrs 45 mins., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, LTD Proceedings Paper 2023

Most existing computational tools for assumption-based argumentation (ABA) focus on so-called flat frameworks, disregarding the more general case. In this paper, we study an instantiation-based approach for reasoning in possibly non-flat ABA. We make use of a semantics-preserving translation between ABA and bipolar argumentation frameworks (BAFs). By utilizing compilability theory, we establish that the constructed BAFs will in general be of exponential size. In order to keep the number of arguments and computational cost low, we present three ways of identifying redundant arguments. Moreover, we identify fragments of ABA which admit a poly-sized instantiation. We propose two algorithmic approaches for reasoning in possibly non-flat ABA. The first approach utilizes the BAF instantiation while the second works directly without constructing arguments. An empirical evaluation shows that the former outperforms the latter on many instances, reflecting the lower complexity of BAF reasoning. This result is in contrast to flat ABA, where direct approaches dominate instantiation-based approaches.

Privacy engineering is gaining momentum in industry and academia alike. So far, manifold low-level primitives and higher-level methods and strategies have successfully been established. Still, fostering adoption in real-world information systems calls for additional aspects to be consciously considered in research and practice.

Squeezing is a crucial resource for quantum information processing and quantum sensing. In levitated nanomechanics, squeezed states of motion can be generated via temporal control of the trapping frequency of a massive particle. However, the amount of achievable squeezing typically suffers from detrimental environmental effects. We analyze the performance of a scheme that, by embedding careful time-control of trapping potentials and fully accounting for the most relevant sources of noise -- including measurement backaction -- achieves significant levels of mechanical squeezing. We present three statistical descriptions for systems of classical particles and consider their extension to hybrid quantum-classical systems. The classical descriptions are ensembles on configuration space, ensembles on phase space, and a Hilbert space approach using van Hove operators which provides an alternative to the Koopman-von Neumann formulation. In all cases, there is a natural way to define classical observables and a corresponding Lie algebra that is isomorphic to the usual Poisson algebra in phase space. We show that in the case of classical particles, the three descriptions are equivalent and indicate how they are related. We then modify and extend these descriptions to introduce hybrid models where a classical particle interacts with a quantum particle. The approach of ensembles on phase space and the Hilbert space approach, which are novel, lead to equivalent hybrid models, while they are not equivalent to the hybrid model of the approach of ensembles on configuration space. Thus, we end up identifying two inequivalent types of hybrid systems, making different predictions, especially when it comes to entanglement. These results are of interest regarding ``no-go'' theorems about quantum systems interacting via a classical mediator which address the issue of whether gravity must be quantized. Such theorems typically require assumptions that make them model dependent. The hybrid systems that we discuss provide concrete examples of inequivalent models that can be used to compute simple examples to test the assumptions of the ``no-go'' theorems and their applicability., Comment: 18 pages. We present a model treating the energy-momentum relation of relativistic particles as the upper branch of a generalized energy-momentum relation emerging from a forbidden crossing between the constant energy of a massive particle and the photon line. The lower branch, a regime dubbed as Einstein's basement, gives rise to particles with different kinematics that is analysed in the low-velocity limit. Allowing for gravitational interaction between those particles, and between particles of both branches, we discuss whether particles in Einstein's basement might be suitable dark matter candidates. Moreover, the special dynamics of mixed systems leads to an expansion mechanism for regular matter in space. Tests of the presented model by astronomical observations are suggested.

This paper describes the energy resolution of Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs), and models some limiting factors to it. Energy resolution is a measure of the smallest possible difference in energy of the impinging photons, Delta E, that the detector can identify and is of critical importance for many applications. Limits to the energy resolution cause by the Fano effect, amplifier noise, current inhomogeneities, and readout sampling frequency are taken into consideration for this model. This paper describes an approach to combine all of these limitations and predict a wavelength dependency of the upper limit to the resolving power.

Motivated by the similarity of the mathematical structure of Einstein's General Relativity in its weak field limit and of Maxwell's theory of electrodynamics it is shown that there are gravitational analogues of the Josephson effect and the quantum Hall effect. These effects can be combined to derive a gravitational analogue of the quantum/electric metrological triangle. The gravitational metrological triangle may have applications in metrology and could be used to investigate the relation of the Planck constant to fundamental particle masses. This allows for quantum tests of the Weak Equivalence Principle. A quantum limit on the measurement of magnetic field has been recently pointed out, stating that the so-called Energy Resolution $E_\mathrm{R}$ is bounded to $E_\mathrm{R} \gtrsim \hbar$. This limit holds indeed true for the vast majority of existing quantum magnetometers, including SQUIDs, solid state spins and optically pumped atomic magnetometers. However, it can be surpassed by highly correlated spin systems, as recently demonstrated with a single-domain spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate. Here we show that similar and potentially much better resolution can be achieved with a hard ferromagnet levitated above a superconductor at cryogenic temperature. We demonstrate $E_\mathrm{R}=\left( 0.064 \pm 0.010 \right) \, \hbar$ and anticipate that $E_\mathrm{R}<10^{-3} \, \hbar$ is within reach with near-future improvements. This finding opens the way to new applications in condensed matter, biophysics and fundamental science. We report on an experiment achieving the dynamical generation of non-Gaussian states of motion of a levitated optomechanical system. We access intrinsic Duffing-like non-linearities by squeezing an oscillator's state of motion through rapidly switching the frequency of its trap. Matter-wave interferometry with increasingly larger masses could pave the way to understanding the nature of wavefunction collapse, the quantum to classical transition or even how an object in a spatial superposition interacts with its gravitational field. In order to improve upon the current mass record, it is necessary to move into the nano-particle regime. In this paper we provide a design for a nano-particle Talbot-Lau matter-wave interferometer that circumvents the practical challenges of previously proposed designs. We present simulations of the expected fringe patterns that such an interferometer would produce, considering all major sources of decoherence. We discuss the practical challenges involved in building such an experiment as well as some preliminary experimental results to illustrate the proposed measurement scheme. We show that such a design is suitable for seeing interference fringes with $10^6$amu SiO$_2$ particles, and that this design can be extended to even $10^8$amu particles by using flight times below the typical Talbot time of the system.

We investigate a non-interacting many-particle bosonic system, placed in an asymmetric double-well potential. We first consider the dynamics of a single particle and determine its time-dependent probabilities to be in the left or the right well of the potential. These probabilities obey the standard Josephson equations, which in their many-particle interpretation also describe a globally coherent system, such as a Bose-Einstein condensate. This system exhibits the widely studied Josephson oscillations of the population imbalance between the wells. In our study we go beyond the regime of global coherence by developing a formalism based on an effective density matrix. This formalism gives rise to a generalization of Josephson equations, which differ from the standard ones by an additional parameter, that has the meaning of the degree of fragmentation. We first consider the solution of the generalized Josephson equations in the particular case of thermal equilibrium at finite temperatures, and extend our discussion to the non-equilibrium regime afterwards. Our model leads to a constraint on the maximum amplitude of Josephson oscillations for a given temperature and the total number of particles. A detailed analysis of this constraint for typical experimental scenarios is given.

The traditional view from particle physics is that quantum gravity effects should only become detectable at extremely high energies and small length scales. Due to the significant technological challenges involved, there has been limited progress in identifying experimentally detectable effects that can be accessed in the foreseeable future. However, in recent decades, the size and mass of quantum systems that can be controlled in the laboratory have reached unprecedented scales, enabled by advances in ground-state cooling and quantum-control techniques. Preparations of massive systems in quantum states pave the way for the explorations of a low-energy regime in which gravity can be both sourced and probed by quantum systems. Such approaches constitute an increasingly viable alternative to accelerator-based, laser-interferometric, torsion-balance, and cosmological tests of gravity. In this review, we provide an overview of proposals where massive quantum systems act as interfaces between quantum mechanics and gravity. We discuss conceptual difficulties in the theoretical description of quantum systems in the presence of gravity, review tools for modeling massive quantum systems in the laboratory, and provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art experimental landscape. Proposals covered in this review include, among others, precision tests of gravity, tests of gravitationally-induced wavefunction collapse and decoherence, as well as gravitymediated entanglement. n this paper, we review and connect the three essential conditions needed by the collapse model to achieve a complete and exact formulation, namely the theoretical, the experimental, and the ontological ones. These features correspond to the three parts of the paper. In any empirical science, the first two features are obviously connected but, as is well known, among the different formulations and interpretations of non-relativistic quantum mechanics, only collapse models, as the paper well illustrates with a richness of details, have experimental consequences. Finally, we show that a clarification of the ontological intimations of collapse models is needed for at least three reasons: (1) to respond to the indispensable task of answering the question `what are collapse models (and in general any physical theory) about?'; (2) to achieve a deeper understanding of their different formulations; (3) to enlarge the panorama of possible readings of a theory, which historically has often played a fundamental heuristic role., Comment: 21 pages, LaTeX

In 1971, Zel'dovich predicted the amplification of electromagnetic (EM) waves scattered by a rotating metallic cylinder, gaining mechanical rotational energy from the body. Since then, this phenomenon has been believed to be unobservable with electromagnetic fields due to technological difficulties in meeting the condition of amplification, that is, the cylinder must rotate faster than the frequency of the incoming radiation. Here, we show that this key piece of fundamental physics has been hiding in plain sight for the past 60 years in the physics of induction generators. We measure the amplification of an electromagnetic field, generated by a toroid LC-circuit, scattered by an aluminium cylinder spinning in the toroid gap. We show that when the Zel'dovich condition is met, the resistance induced by the cylinder becomes negative implying amplification of the incoming EM waves. These results reveal the connection between the concept of induction generators and the physics of this fundamental effect that was believed to be unobservable, and hence open new prospects towards testing the Zel'dovich mechanism in the quantum regime, as well as related quantum friction effects., Comment: 5 pages and 3 figure plus supplementary file

We report feedback cooling of translational and librational degrees of freedom of a levitated micromagnet cylinder, utilizing a piezoelectric actuator to apply linear feedback to high-Q mechanical modes. The normal modes are measured with a superconducting pick-up coil coupled to a DC SQUID, and phase information is fed back to the piezoelectric actuator to feedback cool a center-of-mass mode to $\sim$7 K, and a librational mode to $830 \pm 200$ mK. Q-factors of $1.0 \times 10^7$ are evaluated for the center-of-mass mode. We find that it is plausible to achieve ground state cooling of the center-of-mass mode by introducing vibration isolation, optimizing the geometry of the pick-up coil to focus on the specific mode of interest and utilizing a state-of-the-art SQUID for detection., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

ProbLog is a popular probabilistic logic programming language/tool, widely used for applications requiring to deal with inherent uncertainties in structured domains. In this paper we study connections between ProbLog and a variant of another well-known formalism combining symbolic reasoning and reasoning under uncertainty, i.e. probabilistic argumentation. Specifically, we show that ProbLog is an instance of a form of Probabilistic Abstract Argumentation (PAA) that builds upon Assumption-Based Argumentation (ABA). The connections pave the way towards equipping ProbLog with alternative semantics, inherited from PAA/PABA, as well as obtaining novel argumentation semantics for PAA/PABA, leveraging on prior connections between ProbLog and argumentation. A defining signature of classical systems is "in principle measurability" without disturbance: a feature manifestly violated by quantum systems. We describe a multi-interferometer experimental setup that can, in principle, reveal the nonclassicality of a spatial superposition-sourced gravitational field if an irreducible disturbance is caused by a measurement of gravity. While one interferometer sources the field, the others are used to measure the gravitational field created by the superposition. This requires neither any specific form of nonclassical gravity, nor the generation of entanglement between any relevant degrees of freedom at any stage, thus distinguishing it from the experiments proposed so far. This test, when added to the recent entanglement-witness based proposals, enlarges the domain of quantum postulates being tested for gravity. Assumption-based Argumentation (ABA) is a well-known structured argumentation formalism, whereby arguments and attacks between them are drawn from rules, defeasible assumptions and their contraries. A common restriction imposed on ABA frameworks (ABAFs) is that they are flat, i.e., each of the defeasible assumptions can only be assumed, but not derived. While it is known that flat ABAFs can be translated into abstract argumentation frameworks (AFs) as proposed by Dung, no translation exists from general, possibly non-flat ABAFs into any kind of abstract argumentation formalism. In this paper, we close this gap and show that bipolar AFs (BAFs) can instantiate general ABAFs. To this end we develop suitable, novel BAF semantics which borrow from the notion of deductive support. We investigate basic properties of our BAFs, including computational complexity, and prove the desired relation to ABAFs under several semantics. Finally, in order to support computation and explainability, we propose the notion of dispute trees for our BAF semantics.

We theoretically investigate the propagation of light in the presence of a homogeneous gravitational field. To model this, we derive the solutions of the wave equation in Rindler spacetime, which account for gravitational redshift and light deflection. The developed theoretical framework is used to explore the propagation of plane light waves in a horizontal Fabry-Perot cavity. We pay particular attention to the cavity output power. It is shown that this power depends not only on the input frequency, but also on the vertical position of a detector. We state that the height-dependent detector signal arising from the cavity internal light deflection effect (CILD-effect) also opens a new alternative way to frequency stabilization in Earth-based laser experiments and to study gravitational light deflection at laboratory scales., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Gravity differs from all other known fundamental forces since it is best described as a curvature of spacetime. For that reason it remains resistant to unifications with quantum theory. Gravitational interaction is fundamentally weak and becomes prominent only at macroscopic scales. This means, we do not know what happens to gravity in the microscopic regime where quantum effects dominate, and whether quantum coherent effects of gravity become apparent. Levitated mechanical systems of mesoscopic size offer a probe of gravity, while still allowing quantum control over their motional state. This regime opens the possibility of table-top testing of quantum superposition and entanglement in gravitating systems. Here we show gravitational coupling between a levitated sub-millimeter scale magnetic particle inside a type-I superconducting trap and kg source masses, placed approximately half a meter away. Our results extend gravity measurements to low gravitational forces of attonewton and underline the importance of levitated mechanical sensors. Specifically, at a frequency of 26.7 Hz, a mass of 0.4 mg and showing Q-factors in excess of 10$^7$, we obtained a force noise of 0.5 $fN\sqrt{Hz}$ . We study cross-relaxation features near zero magnetic field with ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond and examine their properties in samples with a range (0.9 ppm - 16.0 ppm) of NV concentrations. The observed NV-NV cross-relaxation features between differently oriented NV centers in high (greater than 0.9 ppm)-NV-density samples hold promise for a variety of magnetometry applications where microwave fields (or any bias field) disturb the system under study. We theoretically determine the values of the bias magnetic fields corresponding to cross-relaxations between different axes and experimentally validate them. Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) are a class of superconducting cryogenic detectors that simultaneously exhibit energy resolution, time resolution and spatial resolution. The pixel yield of MKID arrays is usually a critical figure of merit in the characterisation of an MKIDs array. Currently, for MKIDs intended for the detection of optical and near-infrared photons, only the best arrays exhibit a pixel yield as high as 75-80%. The uniformity of the superconducting film used for the fabrication of MKIDs arrays is often regarded as the main limiting factor to the pixel yield of an array. In this paper we will present data on the uniformity of the TiN/Ti/TiN multilayers deposited at the Tyndall National Institute and compare these results with a statistical model that evaluates how inhomogeneities affect the pixel yield of an array., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. The Xilinx ZCU111 Radio Frequency System on Chip (RFSoC) is a promising solution for reading out large arrays of microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs). The board boasts eight on-chip 12-bit / 4.096 GSPS analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs) and eight 14-bit / 6.554 GSPS digital-to-analogue converters (DACs), as well as field programmable gate array (FPGA) resources of 930,000 logic cells and 4,272 digital signal processing (DSP) slices. While this is sufficient data converter bandwidth for the readout of 8,000 MKIDs, with a 2 MHz channel-spacing, and a 1 MHz sampling rate (per channel), additional FPGA resources are needed to perform the DSP needed to process this large number of MKIDs. A solution to this problem is the new Xilinx RFSoC 2x2 board. This board costs only one fifth of the ZCU111 while still providing the same logic resources as the ZCU111, albeit with only a quarter of the data converter resources. Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) are cryogenic photon detectors and are attractive because they permit simultaneous time, energy and spatial resolution of faint astronomical sources. We present a cost-effective alternative to dedicated (e.g. analogue) electronics for prototyping readout of single-pixel Optical/NIR MKIDs by repurposing existing and well-known ROACH-1 boards.
