The utilisation of continuous random waveforms for radar, that is, noise radar, has been extensively studied as a candidate for low probability of intercept operation. However, compared with the more traditional pulse‐Doppler radar, noise radar systems are significantly more complicated to implement, which is likely why few systems exist. If noise radar systems are to see the light of day, system design, implementation, limitations etc., must be investigated. Therefore, the authors examine and detail the implementation of a real‐time noise radar system on a field programmable gate array. The system is capable of operating with 100% duty cycle, 200 MHz bandwidth, and 268 ms integration time while processing a range of about 8.5 km. Additionally, the system can perform real‐time moving target compensation to reduce cell migration. In this study, spatial separation of the radar transmitter and receiver units is considered, as a means of reducing the masking effect in noise radars. A bistatic radar system is constructed, with emphasis on a lightweight transmitter unit that can be mounted on a commercial Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The system uses pseudo‐random noise, generated digitally at the receiver and transmitter units. Correlation losses, due to non‐linearities in the transmitter and receiver units, are measured to 0.1 dB. This study shows that by separating the transmitter and receiver unit the masking effect is significantly reduced, compared to a monostatic setup. This reduction is enough for the system to detect a slow flying UAV. Thus, bistatic separation should be considered as a practical tool to reduce the masking effect. By processing clutter with an extended CLEAN algorithm, the correlation noise floor is further suppressed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A physical model is presented describing the backscatter from coniferous boreal forests in the lower VHF-band in terms of stem volume. By using measurements of mean amplitude in high-resolution SAR images (rather than intensity), a linear dependence on stem volume can be obtained. The model fits well with the measurements made using the coherent all radio band sensing (CARABAS) SAR in the southern boreal forest, indicating the possibility of retrieving stem volume, and hence biomass, with an accuracy similar to that reached by standard ground-based measurements. No saturation of the scattering is seen up to biomasses of 550 [m.sup.3]/ha. Index Terms--CARABAS, forest biomass, parameter retrieval, SAR, scattering model, stem volume, VHF.

The use of airborne CARABAS-II VHF (20-90 MHz) SAR data for retrieval of forest parameters has been investigated. The investigation was performed at a test site located in the southwest of Sweden consisting mainly of Norway spruce forests. Regression models predicting forest parameters from radar backscattering amplitude were developed and evaluated. The results showed a linear relationship between backscattering amplitude and forest stem volume, stem diameter, and tree height. The analysis also showed that the radar signal is strongly affected by ground slope conditions. The root mean square errors from the regression analysis, restricted to forest stands on near-horizontal ground, were found to be 66 [m.sup.3] [ha.sup.-1], 3.2 cm, and 2.3 m for stem volume, stem diameter, and tree height respectively. No saturation of the backscattered signal was observed up to the maximum stem volume of 625 [m.sup.3] [ha.sup.-1], corresponding to a biomass of 375 tons [ha.sup.-1]. The results imply that VHF SAR data have significant potential for operational use in forestry. Index Terms--CARABAS, SAR, VHF, forest parameter estimation.

A coherent scattering model to determine the forest radar backscattering at VHF frequencies (20-90 MHz) has been developed. The motivation for studying this frequency band is the recent development of the CARABAS Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). In order to model the scattering from branches and trunks, homogeneous dielectric cylinders placed above a semi-infinite dielectric ground have been analyzed. An analytical approach, where the theoretically exact currents induced in an infinite cylinder are truncated, has been compared to a numerical solution using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. If the first-order coherent ray tracing is included in the analytical approach, the results match well with the numerically exact FDTD solution. The results show that, in order to determine the VHF-backscattering from a forest stand, the coherent ground interaction is an important part and has to be considered. In this paper, modeling results are in good agreement with CARABAS measurements. Index Terms--Backscattering, CARABAS, forestry, modeling, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), VHF.

This paper report experiences from the processing and mosaicking of 518 TanDEM-X image pairs covering the entirety of Sweden, with two single map products of above-ground biomass (AGB) and forest stem volume (VOL), both with 10 m resolution. The main objective was to explore the possibilities and overcome the challenges related to forest mapping extending a large number of adjacent satellite scenes. Hence, numerous examples are presented to illustrate challenges and possible solutions. To derive the forest maps, the observables backscatter, interferometric phase height and interferometric coherence, obtained from TanDEM-X, were evaluated using empirical robust linear regression models with reference data extracted from 2288 national forest inventory plots with a 10 m radius. The interferometric phase height was the single most important observable, to predict AGB and VOL. The mosaics were evaluated on different datasets with field-inventoried stands across Sweden. The root mean square error (RMSE) was about 21%-25% (27-30 tons/ha and 52-65 m3/ha) at the stand level. It was noted that the most influencing factors on the observables in this study were local temperature and geolocation errors that were challenging to robustly compensate against. Because of this variability at the scene-level, determinations of AGB and VOL for single stands are recommended to be used with care, as an equivalent accuracy is difficult to achieve for all different scenes, with varying acquisition conditions. Still, for the evaluated stands, the mosaics were of sufficient accuracy to be used for forest management at the stand level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
