Vietnamese Ukrainians are a largely unstudied identity group that has recently attracted attention due to the impacts of the Russo-Ukrainian War. Our study examines Vietnamese-Ukrainian bicultural identity as experienced by 10 university student refugees of the war in 2022–23. Researchers conducted semi-structured ethnographic interviews in which each participant examined identity formation experiences as second-generation Vietnamese Ukrainians. Participants also reflected upon the impacts to ethnic identity self-awareness that resulted from their unexpected return migration to Vietnam as student refugees of war. The cohort of study participants created a tight-knit Vietnamese-Ukrainian return diaspora in an environment conducive to self-reflection and exploration of their ongoing ethnic identity journeys. In our study, we argue that the ethnic identity formation of young Vietnamese Ukrainians relies on the active construction of intercultural personhood as an adaptation to transnational mobility and change. The article is dedicated to the study of the biography of the prominent scientist and public figure M. F. Sumtsov. It reconstructs lesser-known aspects of the scholar’s biography, specifically his origins, the role of his parents and close relatives in shaping his personality and scientific interests. A periodization of the scholar’s life is created, and the influence of the gymnasium on the formation of his scientific views is traced. The article examines the complex process of transformation of the scientist’s scientific interests and public position throughout his life. The path of M. F. Sumtsov as a teacher and active member of Kharkov University is traced. His scientific method and range of scientific interests are analyzed, and his contribution to the establishment of Ukrainian studies as a separate scientific field is characterized. The results of the study will contribute to understanding the greatness of Academician M. F. Sumtsov’s personality, his contribution to world and Ukrainian science and culture, and his role in shaping the national consciousness of the Ukrainian people in the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries. The aim of the article is to create an objective scientific biography of M. F. Sumtsov and to determine his role in history. Methods Used: biographical, comparative-historical, and analytical and theoretical methods of studying archival and literary sources and scientific works on this topic. Main Conclusions: 1. M. F. Sumtsov had Cossack roots on his father’s side and came from a large family of small landowners, the Sumtsov-Sumtsovs, from the Akhtyrka district of Kharkov province, and belonged to the Koltunovsky family on his mother’s side. The Sumtsov family always gravitated towards education and knowledge; all the men in the family graduated from gymnasiums and Kharkov University, which determined M. F. Sumtsov’s fate. Significant influence on the formation of the future scientist’s personality was exerted by his parents’ brothers, E. I. Koltunovsky and R. I. Sumtsov. 2. The scientist’s scientific interests were formed during his studies at the Second Kharkov Gymnasium under the influence of teachers P. B. Lukyanov, I. O. Mandelstam, D. I. Bezperchy, and his stay at O. M. Pogorelko’s boarding school. 3. M. F. Sumtsov’s entire life was inextricably linked with Kharkov University, where he progressed from student to private docent, professor, dean of the history and philology faculty, and was awarded state honors for his contribution to the development of the university and science. 4. M. F. Sumtsov was an interdisciplinary scholar. Interdisciplinarity for M. F. Sumtsov was not just borrowing and combining methods and tools from different sciences. It was what could be called the plasticity of relationships between history and linguistics, ethnography and philosophy, museology and art studies, folklore studies and cultural studies. The scientist did not separate sciences in his research. Positivism, rationalism, empiricism, and analyticality, wide use of the comparative method, and the search for his own path in science characterize M. F. Sumtsov as an outstanding scientist. 5. On the occasion of the Jubilee of Professor Giovanna Brogi from the University of Milan, her profile and scientific achievements were presented, and warm wishes were extended during the 5th International Conference titled “Philosophy of Being and Survival in Ego Documents of Ukrainian Writers, Painters, and Filmmakers (from the times of Orlik to the present). Being as Survival”. The jubilee celebrant is an outstanding linguist, philologist, historian, Polish and Ukrainian scholar. She has collaborated with numerous universities and research institutes worldwide and is a member of many scientific organizations and associations. Her research focuses on the historiography of Slavic lands and Western Europe from the Renaissance to the Baroque period. Another area of her research is the literary heritage of Kyivan Rus, with additional topics including the history of Slavic studies and the work of Taras Shevchenko in the context of European literature. She is also involved in popularization activities, teaching the history of Ukraine, particularly in response to the significant interest in Ukraine in Italy following the aggression by the Russian invader. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has highlighted the problems of the Japanese academic discourse on Ukraine. This essay has two purposes. First, it describes how Russia's invasion has altered Tokyo's official policies and public discourse by driving away Russian disinformation and propaganda narratives while articulating the multiple chasms among academics regarding Ukraine and Russia. Second, it highlights the embedded assumptions commonly seen in many researchers dealing with post-Soviet space: Russia-centred ontology (e.g., "Ukraine is a periphery of Russia", "fraternal nations") and counterhegemonic epistemology that blames the collective West for "Russophobia."

The article substantiates, defines, and discloses the current Ukrainian studies of the teacher's pedagogical culture in the context of modern political, social, and cultural issues of national education system formation in Ukraine. Attention is focused on the fact that the current mission of the New Ukrainian School education is to strengthen and develop the national idea, which is the lifeblood of state growth and the way to victory. Thus, it is necessary to form a pedagogical culture based on Ukrainian studies, which should be everywhere in educational, cultural, artistic, scientific, and information environments. It has been proven that the cult of culture, primarily national, must be perceived as a methodology of modern education. It should serve not only historical truth, intellectualization, and humanization of the personality but also be a safeguard, caution, and protection against expansion in the future, strengthening the Spirit of the People, which is our indomitable strength. It has been found that, when forming the personality of a teacher, lecturer, and their pedagogical culture, it is necessary to pay attention to two key aspects - professional and cultural, because the institution of higher education should provide not only "knowledge" competencies, but also create a cultural teacher. Pedagogical culture is formed twodimensionally - concordantly and logically, sensually and rationally, humanely and realistically, with heart and mind. It is a kind of synthesis of soul and reason (intellect). It has been established that Ukrainian studies should be considered an essential component in the education content, which makes it sound, intellectual, humane, and national, strengthening the social processes of state-nation creation. Since educational Ukrainian-centrism will make it impossible for the rudiments of "cultural and educational imperialism" of Moscovites to manifest, which has always tried to destroy the national-historical life of Ukrainians, planting the ideology of little russia and statelessness. They can realize the highest civic task of education, which is to cultivate respect for one's own "I," one's Kindred, People, Ukraine, to serve as a spiritual, socio-political factor of consolidation and development of the Nation. The process of formation and development of Russian and Ukrainian studies at the Belarusian State University as a scientific historical discipline and educational course is analysed. It is noted that since the 1936/37 academic year it is possible to find a documented trace of the continuity in the study and the teaching of the discipline at the level of special educational and scientific structures: the department of the history of the peoples of the USSR and the history of the BSSR, department of the history of the peoples of the USSR, department of history of the USSR, department of history of the USSR of the pre-Soviet period, department of the history of the USSR of the era of socialism, department of contemporary history of Slavic countries (based on this department of the history of the Southern and Western Slavs was created), department of Russian history (which was formed on the basis of the department of history of the USSR of the pre-Soviet period, was transformed first into the department of Russian and Slavic history, and then into the modern department of Russian history). The author notes the relationship between the development of Russian studies and Ukrainian studies as a direction of historical knowledge with the socio-political situation in the country, the role of historians of the Belarusian State University in the formation of the national structure of historical memory, understanding the importance of historical science for society and the state. The national Belarusian historiography is characterised as a significant component of the European historiography of the history of Russia and Ukraine, its integration into the general European scientific process of studying countries and regions. The prospects for the development of Russian and Ukrainian studies in Belarus at the present stage, the expansion of the process of interdisciplinary synthesis in the late 20th – early 21th centuries are considered. The conclusion is made about the transformation of Russian studies and Ukrainian studies into one of the leading areas of modern historical science, which is part of the complex of social and humanitarian scientific disciplines.

Marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, next year, we publish the article of Adrian Karmazyn, a member of the Ukrainian Association of American Studies, a historian and journalist, expert in American media and strategic communications, who worked for the Voice of America for more than 25 years and served as the Chief of the VOA Ukrainian Service (2005 – 2015). This is the third in a series of articles illustrating the type of reporting Adrian Karmazyn was engaged in as a radio journalist with the Voice of America’s (VOA) Ukrainian Service in the 1990s. Previously, he have written about his 1993 reporting assignment in then-newly independent Ukraine [2] and his 1996 reporting assignment at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago [4]. A collection of VOA Ukrainian Service recordings is preserved at the Ukrainian Museum-Archives in Cleveland [5]. Adrian Karmazyn’s memoir about his career at VOA is included in a collection of articles, published in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of VOA’s Ukrainian Service [3]. The Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University (HURI) is one of the most powerful and oldest centers of Ukrainian studies in America. It serves as a focal point for graduate and undergraduate students, fellows, and associates pursuing research in Ukrainian language, literature, and history as well as in anthropology, archaeology, art history, economics, political science, sociology, theology, and other disciplines. Most of the interviews for this story about HURI were conducted in English and then translated into Ukrainian for broadcast to Ukraine. For this article, the Ukrainian versions of interviewee comments were translated back into English.

The main goal of the study is to reveal the peculiarities of the emergence and formation of the tram system, as well as to outline the impact of using this type of urban transport on the urbanization of Ukrainian cities in the late 19th -- early 20th cent. It is claimed that this type of transport was and still remains the most environmentally friendly. The forerunner of the electric tram -- horse-drawn -- had several significant shortcomings: its introduction was limited by the terrain and the life expectancy of the animal. Further attempts to use the steam engine were also unsuccessful. The creation of the electric tram expanded the use of public transport. Belgian companies played a significant role in the introduction of tram transport in Ukraine. The popularity of electric trams contributed to further research in the field of electric traction and the construction of tram cars, as well as the design of cities in general. A number of Ukrainian scientists played a remarkable role in the development of tramways, such as Fedir Pirotskyi, Hryhorii Dubelir, Pavlo Kopniaiev, Oleksandr Pohorelko, Ivan Nekrasov, Oleksandr Potebnia, and others. Nowadays, the research on public transport and a thorough analysis of the extensive use of trams are particularly important in the face of environmental problems in large cities of Ukraine. This article focuses on the emergence of new or author's words during the verbal communication between students of the departments of Czech and Ukrainian studies. The article very accurately analyzes the main causes and conditions of neologisms in Czech and Ukrainian languages, as well as the tendencies of their further development are described. The topics of neologisms are identified separately and specific examples are given for better perception of the presented information. Particular attention is paid to the relevance of this topic, as the issue of language enrichment has always been and remains an important subject of research of many theorists and practitioners of both foreign and domestic linguistics. This topic clearly meets the needs of today and is essential for the development of scientific thought.

There are studied political, social and other grounds of formation of the Transdniestrian political elite and civil society as self-sustained political phenomena. These institutes have been developing not isolatedly but in the framework of those political processes that were typical for the region during the period of its establishment and existence in different social and political conditions. There are summarized and analyzed different aspects of the Ukrainian factor impact over these processes as by direct influence of the Ukrainian political elite and civil society, as well as in the context of ideological concepts formulated in the Ukrainian political discourse during a long period of time.Concrete methods of the Ukrainian political class impact over the Transdniestrian political elite and civil society are also presented. A very special activity of the Ukrainian side could be seen up to 2014, when the Transdniestrian political elite had been considered in Kiev as an independent subject with its own interests that in its turn determined the choice of certain forms of impact. Direct inter-elite communication used to be one of the most meaningful forms of such impact, that allowed to identify the sides’ interests and to find mutually acceptable decisions on the highest and high levels.Since 2014 the situation has changed dramatically. The Ukrainian political elite refuses to recognize the Transdniestrian political elite’s status of a separate (independent) subject and considers it to be a tool for the Russia’s interests’ implementation. There appears a special role of the border factor as of a key resource for pressure over the Transdniestrian political elite, its business interests, options for traffic etc. The same way the Ukrainian side minimized contacts with the Transdniestrian civil society. But at the same time Ukrainians keep for themselves the option for monitoring the Transdniestrian political system.In the Ukrainian political narrative there appears a contradiction, when the Ukrainian political authorities can’t use a symbolic potential of a number of Transdniestrian locations, actual for the modern political ideology of Ukraine only because that these locations are situated on the territory controlled by the Transdniestrian political elite whilst Ukrainians avoid any contacts with the latter.

The article discusses the current state and development prospects of the Department of So- cial Sciences and Ukrainian Studies of Bukovinian State Medical Uni- versity. The purpose of this study is to argument and to describe the periodization of the department’s history as well as highlight the main characteristics of development and processing of all different stages of further work. Relevance is dictated by the need to determine the role of the Department of Social Sciences and Ukrainian studies for the hu- manitarian sphere of Ukrainian universities. The method of work is based on the analysis of historiographic publications, archival materi- als, research on the current state of the humanities. Conclusions. An analysis of the logic of the historical development of the department confirms the periodization of the work of this structural unit of the Belarusian State Medical University for the humanitarian profile pro- posed in the introduction: a) 1944–1991, b) 1991–2013, c) 2013 ‐ today. The party ideologization of the first period and the restructuring of the structure and system of teaching at the department in the second period are emphasized. The essence of the third period is based on a comprehensive philosophical and methodological, cultural, socio- economic, spiritual, valeological and philological studies of the role of Ukrainian studies as a holistic knowledge system in shaping the worldview of future specialists-patriots of Ukraine. Anthropocentrism is becoming one of the main directions of future work, as well as the main problems of the humanitarian development of Ukrainian society: historical, cultural, linguistic, literary and philosophical. In these areas is the prospect of the development of the department.

The views of various experts on the Encyclopedia of Ukraine have been investigated and the main areas of scientific research are outlined in which this encyclopedia is used in studies or is as a source of cited information.

The article deals with the history of the most important and iconic (for the Ukrainian national identity) encyclopaedic projects of the 20th century. The author compares the stages of creation of the synthetic editions in the pre-Soviet and Soviet period, analysing the experience of the Ukrainian diaspora in the West preoccupied with this enterprise. A particular attention is paid to the methodological issues, approaches, tools, and methods of organizing, structuring, and integrating the encyclopaedic materials. The use of historical, synthetic, and comparative methods leads to the conclusion that none of the analysed encyclopaedias is ideal, each of them being marked by the pressure of political regime and significant ideological commitment.

The purpose of this research is to highlight the issue of the activities of the Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage, as an example of the educational and scientific organization of Canada to study the Ukrainian cultural property. It was thanks to the Ukrainian studies activity of the Prairie Center that a number of documentary materials on the history of the Ukrainian community of Canada were saved and studied, and the government of this state drew attention to the urgent problems of the diaspora and Ukraine as a whole. To achieve this goal, the necessary number of sources and historiographic literature was attracted, which dealt with various aspects of the problem. The author applied the following general historical scientific research methods as historical-genetic, historical-comparative, and historical-typological. Within the framework of this scientific study, the genesis, milestones of activity were examined and the main programs and Ukrainian studies projects of the Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage were analyzed. Purpose of the study is to analyze cultural studies Antoni Marcinkowski - a Polish folklorist and writer born in the Kyiv region - from the point of view of the existing Ukrainian studies and nation-building components. A methodology of the research: methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalization and use of modern tools for studying the process of nation-building are applied. This made it possible to reveal the peculiarities of the interpretation of Ukrainian folklore as an element of folk culture in the time of Marcinkowski when a scientifically grounded idea of the distinctness and originality of the Ukrainian ethnos arose. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that in the national cultural studies, for the first time, an attempt was made to outline a portrait of a Pole who felt and proclaimed the ethnocultural sovereignty of Ukrainians. Characterized by a grid of coordinates, which formed the basis of its ethnocultural searches, among which: knowledge of the people, his customs and everyday life; an analysis of the system of beliefs and the place of man in this system, the declaration of dignity and humanity; a combination of moral, religious and social components in the process of formation of personality, ethnic group, nation. Conclusion. It is proved that he, as one of the first researchers, put forward a scientifically grounded thesis about ethnocultural isolation and identity of Ukrainians; pointed to its features, relying on the research of contemporary famous scientists, both Ukrainian and foreign. It is substantiated that the elements of this originality are the integrity and endemic nature of the Ukrainian nation-and cultural-process processes, the content of their native tradition in the village and organic unity with nature; «Internal» freedom and freedom of love; an identity based on being among «their» and «in oneself», communicating with their «own» language. Marko Dmytrovych Antonovych is a Ukrainian historian, publicist, literary historian, follower of the historical tradition of the Antonovych’s family in the third generation, who left a considerable legacy of research in the field of Slavic studies. One of the centers of Slavic studies during the interwar period was Prague and its cultural environment, in which Marko Dmytrovych formed as a researcher. In his works he paid attention to studying the history, literature and mentality of the Slavic nations, in particular the Czechs, the Poles and the Ukrainians. The part of the works of M. Antonovych is devoted to studying the origin of the Slavs through the prism of history and linguistics. His reviews on the works devoted to the Ukrainian-Czech and Ukrainian-Polish literary, Czech-Slovak linguistic and cultural ties are the testimony of his awareness in the field of Slavonic studies. Activation of globalization processes in the world leads to an acceleration of internal transformations in the post–colonial states and actualizing the problem of formation of different forms of collective identity in the new socio– cultural coordinates. In this regard, the relevance of the integrative study of the shaping of the European Civilization identity of citizens of Ukraine is not in doubt. It is known that the phenomenon of collective identity has long attracted the attention of many researchers and actively discussed in the diverse social and humanitarian discourses. The foreign science studies this phenomenon mainly in line with the socio–cultural anthropology, sociology and psychology from different theoretical and methodological positions. In the Ukrainian science collective identity is studied within the framework of philosophy, political science, sociology, cultural studies and psychology. The purpose of this article is to study the dynamics of formation of the European Civilization identity of Ukrainian citizens in the post–colonial era in terms of Ukrainian studies as an integrative science. The main approaches to the definition of identity, it highlights the ambiguity of interpretations and analyzes a combination of European and national identity. The author presents different points of view on the nature of the social and cultural phenomenon and proves the importance of the formation of European Civilization identity at the post–colonial stage of development of Ukrainian society. In connection with this, in the state policy of identity in Ukraine, an interest in the development of various projects for the formation of a common identity as a basis for strengthening the unity of the Ukrainian people is actualized. The data of the sociological research prove that the identity issues are still among the key problems of the post–colonial Ukrainian society. In the article, the author reveals some aspects of the policy of Ukrainization, which was carried out by the Hetman P. Skoropadskyi government in 1918. Particular attention is paid to such issues as the organization of courses on Ukrainian studies and the Ukrainian language for teachers, officials of state institutions, the creation of Ukrainian studies departments in higher educational institutions, etc. In general, the attempts by the government of P. Skoropadsky to Ukrainianize all branches of life were an important part of the national–cultural revival of Ukraine in the conditions of the revolutionary events of 1917–1921. Based on normative documents of the period of the Ukrainian State, the author concludes that measures in this direction, like the government itself, and Hetman in person, not always consistent, but they were aimed at preserving the Ukrainian tradition in society.
