With increasing longevity, the number of individuals reaching and surpassing the age of 100 has risen in the past 20 years. Consequently, this phenomenon has attracted the attention of the scientific community from different disciplines putting centenarians in the spotlight of gerontological research. Prior research includes special articles and systematic reviews that had focused on specific scientific domains (e.g., medical, psychological), often lacking an inter/multi-disciplinary perspective (e.g., Pavlidis et al., 2012; Poon & Cheung, 2012; Cheng et al., 2021). Given the increasing number of studies worldwide, it is of interest to investigate the content of published articles to date, distinguish them from articles that do not offer insights on centenarians and near-centenarians, and highlighting the topics that need further investigation.

© The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited 2021, corrected publication 2022, The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world., This project was supported by funds from: the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Imagine Grant (to E.M.B.); the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (JSPS KAKENHI; 16h03079, 17h00875, 18k12015, and 20h04581 to Y.Y.); the research programme Dipartimenti di Eccellenza from the Ministry of Education University and Research (MIUR to N. Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorov's valence-dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. in this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov's methodology across 11 world regions, 41 countries and 11,570 participants. When we used Oosterhof and Todorov's original analysis strategy, the valence-dominance model generalized across regions. When we used an alternative methodology to allow for correlated dimensions, we observed much less generalization. Collectively, these results suggest that, while the valence-dominance model generalizes very well across regions when dimensions are forced to be orthogonal, regional differences are revealed when we use different extraction methods and correlate and rotate the dimension reduction solution., Vienna Science and Technology Fund [WWTF VRG13-007]; ERCEuropean Research Council (ERC)European Commission [647910]; CONICET, ArgentinaConsejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas y Tecnicas (CONICET); European Social Fund (Comprehensive Development for Implementing Smart Specialization Strategies at the University of Pecs) [EFOP-3.6.1.-16-2016-00004]; Swiss National Science FoundationSwiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)European Commission [PZ00P1_154911]; Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)CGIAR; Comunidad de MadridComunidad de Madrid [2016-T1/SOC-1395]; AEI/FEDER UE [PSI2017-85159-P]; National Science Centre, PolandNational Science Centre, Poland [2015/19/D/HS6/00641]; Joep Lange Institute; Slovak Research and Development AgencySlovak Research and Development Agency [APVV-17-0418]; French National Research Agency 'Investissements d'Avenir' programme grantFrench National Research Agency (ANR) [ANR-15-IDEX-02]; Australian Government Research Training Program ScholarshipAustralian GovernmentDepartment of Industry, Innovation and Science; University Grants Commission, New Delhi, IndiaUniversity Grants Commission, India; Department of Psychology, University of Gothenburg; Beijing Natural Science FoundationBeijing Natural Science Foundation [5184035]; CAS Key Laboratory of Behavioral Science, Institute of Psychology; National Science Foundation Graduate Research FellowshipNational Science Foundation (NSF) [R010138018], C.L. was supported by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF VRG13-007); L.M.D. was supported by ERC 647910 (KINSHIP); D.I.B. and N.I. received funding from CONICET, Argentina; L.K., F.K. and A. - Abstract
Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorov’s valence–dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov’s methodology across 11 world regions, 41 countries and 11,570 participants. When we used Oosterhof and Todorov’s original analysis strategy, the valence–dominance model generalized across regions. When we used an alternative methodology to allow for correlated dimensions, we observed much less generalization. Collectively, these results suggest that, while the valence–dominance model generalizes very well across regions when dimensions are forced to be orthogonal, regional differences are revealed when we use different extraction methods and correlate and rotate the dimension reduction solution.

This study tests an important and appealing hypothesis that has been around in the fields of cognitive psychology and neuroscience for over 40 years, but that lacks a conclusive empirical test. According to this hypothesis, there is a direct relationship between speed and capacity in working memory. Working memory refers to the ability to retain a small amount of information in a highly accessible state for a short period of time. Across different fields, it has been proposed that the limited capacity of working memory can be understood in terms of time instead of space, such that the amount of information that can be actively maintained corresponds to the amount of information through which one can cycle in a constant and relatively short time-window. Here, we present a study that explicitly and directly tests the speed-capacity hypothesis. In particular, we test (1) the speed-capacity hypothesis in verbal working memory, (2) the speed-capacity hypothesis in visuospatial working memory, and most importantly, (3) whether the same speed-capacity relation holds across verbal and visuospatial working memory, reflecting a domain-general, time-based law of human working memory capacity and, as such, of the complexity of human thought. Overall, our results do not provide any evidence for the existence of a domain-general law. However, unexpected findings related to measuring memory speed (i.e., high prevalence of negative search slopes in the Sternberg task) prevent us from drawing firm conclusions.

Over the last ten years, Oosterhof and Todorov’s (2008) valence-dominance model of social judgments of faces has emerged as the most prominent account of how we evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgments of faces. How well this model generalizes across world regions is a critical, yet unanswered, question. We will address this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov’s (2008) methodology across all world regions (Africa, Asia, Central America and Mexico, Eastern Europe, Middle East, USA and Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Scandinavia, South America, UK, Western Europe, total N ≥ 9525) and using a diverse set of face stimuli. If we uncover systematic regional differences in social judgments, this will fundamentally change how social perception research is done and interpreted. If we find consistency across regions, this will ground future theory in an appropriately powered empirical test of an underlying assumption.

Sequential difficulty ,aging ,[SCCO.PSYC]Cognitive science/Psychology ,strategy execution ,arithmetic ,working memory - Abstract
In this thesis, we defend the notion that cognitive resources available for strategy execution do not only depend on the participant and current task demands but also on prior task demands. Strategy performance should thus be less efficient when the previous strategy was difficult (i.e., sequential difficulty effects). The notion of sequential difficulty effects was tested in four experiments with computational estimation (i.e., estimating the solution to arithmetic problems by rounding the operands). We found that execution of a mixed-rounding strategy on two-digit addition problems (i.e., rounding one operand down and one operand up) was less efficient after an easy rounding-down strategy than after a difficult rounding-up strategy. Moreover, the effect was stronger in individuals with less efficient working-memory capacity and in Alzheimer patients.

- Abstract
Recent developments in generative AI offer the means to create synthetic identities, or deepfakes, at scale. As deepfake faces and voices become indistinguishable from real ones, they are considered as promising alternatives for research and development to enhance fairness and protect humans’ rights to privacy. Notwithstanding these efforts and intentions, a basic question remains unanswered: Are natural faces and facial deepfakes perceived and remembered in the same way? Using images created via professional photography on the one hand, and a state-of-the-art generative model on the other, we investigated the most studied process of face cognition: perceptual matching and discrimination of facial identity. Our results demonstrate that identity discrimination of natural andsynthetic faces is governed by the same underlying perceptual mechanisms: objective stimulus similarity and observers’ ability level. These findings provide empirical support both for the societal risks associated with deepfakes, while also underscoring the utility of synthetic identities for research and development.
