2. Enhancement of Thermal Conductivity due to Spinons in the One-Dimensional Spin System SrCuO_2

Abstract

We have measured the thermal conductivity along the c-axis parallel to the spin-chains, kappa_c, of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin system SrCuO_2, using as-grown and O_2-annealed single-crystals grown from raw materials with 99.9% (3N) and 99.99% (4N) purity. The value of kappa_c around 50K, where large contribution of the thermal conductivity due to spinons, kappa_spinon, is observed, is markedly enhanced by both the increase of the purity of raw materials and the O_2-annealing. Therefore, the increase of kappa_c implies that kappa_spinon is enhanced due to the decrease of spin defects caused by impurities in raw materials and by oxygen defects. The mean free path of spinons is as large as about 24000 angstrom at low temperatures in the O_2-annealed single-crystal grown from raw materials with 4N purity., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

Abstract

We have measured the thermal conductivity along the [101] direction, kappa_[101]_, along the [10-1] direction, kappa_[10-1]_, and along the b-axis, kappa_b_, of the quasi one-dimensional S=1/2 spin system Sr_2_V_3_O_9_ in magnetic fields up to 14 T, in order to find the thermal conductivity due to spinons and to clarify whether the spin-chains run along the [101] or [10-1] direction. It has been found that both kappa_[101]_, kappa_[10-1]_ and kappa_b_ show one peak around 10 K in zero field and that the magnitude of kappa_[10-1]_ is larger than those of kappa_[101]_ and kappa_b_. By the application of magnetic field along the heat current, the peak of kappa_[10-1]_ is markedly suppressed, while the peaks of kappa_[101]_ and kappa_b_ little change. These results indicate that there is a large contribution of spinons to kappa_[10-1]_ and suggest that the spin-chains run along the [10-1] direction., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures

14. Characterization of micron-size hydrogen clusters using Mie scattering

Abstract

Hydrogen clusters with diameters of a few micrometer range, composed of 10^8-10 hydrogen molecules, have been produced for the first time in an expansion of supercooled, high-pressure hydrogen gas into a vacuum through a conical nozzle connected to a cryogenic pulsed solenoid valve. The size distribution of the clusters has been evaluated by measuring the angular distribution of laser light scattered from the clusters. The data were analyzed based on the Mie scattering theory combined with the Tikhonov regularization method including the instrumental functions, the validity of which was assessed by performing a calibration study using a reference target consisting of standard micro-particles with two different sizes. The size distribution of the clusters was found discrete peaked at 0.33 ± 0.03, 0.65 ± 0.05, 0.81 ± 0.06, 1.40 ± 0.06 and 2.00 ± 0.13 μm in diameter. The highly reproducible and impurity-free nature of the micron-size hydrogen clusters can be a promising target for laser-driven multi-MeV proton sources with the currently available high power lasers.

Abstract

Production cross sections of residual nuclei via proton-and deuteron-induced spallation reactions on 91,92 Y, 92,93 Zr, and 93,94 Nb at projectile energies Production cross sections of residual nuclei via proton-and deuteron-induced spallation reactions on $^{91,92}$Y,$^{92,93}$Zr,and $^{93,94}$Nb at projectile energies around 100 MeV/nucleon were measured in inverse kinematics at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Noticeable jumps in the measured cross sections of isotone production appear between the neutron numbers N =51 and 50 for target nuclei with the initial neutron number N$_{init}$ =53 ($^{92}$Y, $^{93}$Zr, and $^{94}$Nb), while such jump is not clearly seen for target nuclei with N$^{init}$=52($^{91}$Y,$^{92}$Zr, and $^{93}$Nb). The measured isotopic production cross sections are compared with PHITS calculations considering both the intranuclear cascade and evaporation processes in order to benchmark the reaction models.
