Abstract

In this paper, we propose a novel shockproof head gimbals assembly (HGA) structure incorporated with 'a balanced-type head suspension' for 0.85-in hard disk drives (HDDs), and investigated its performance on external shock resistance during read/write operations. Experimental drop impact test results confirm that the 0.85-in drive equipped with the new suspension structure is durable over 2000 G (1.0 ms duration) of external shock, ensuring no head slider and/or disk surface damage. According to computer simulation and experimental results, potential shock resistance of more than 2000 G may also be possible with the head actuator itself, which points to its application in cellular phones. 6. Evaluation technique of head/tape contact using acoustic emission

Abstract

A new on-line methodology has been developed for both evaluation and analysis of head/tape interface phenomena. It uses the direct relationships between the power in the acoustic emission (AE) signal and wear, and between the power in the AE signal and the normal force acting on the magnetic head. The AE transducer is directly mounted onto the head assembly of a VCR mechanism in order to measure the head/tape contact behavior. This technique has been used to: (a) monitor the effect of relative humidity on head wear; (b) investigate the wear characteristics of Mn-Zn ferrite as a function of crystallographic orientation without direct measurement of the wear volume; and (c) evaluate tape abrasiveness. Explicit correlations were also obtained for the normal force acting on the magnetic head, the tape wrap angle around the head, and the reproduced signal flatness in terms of the tape transverse stress distribution. Moreover, the normal force as a function of the tape stress distribution is closely related to the longitudinal tape vibration at the head exit region.

37. Application of Multilayer Reflectors to X-Ray Optic System for Cosmic X-Ray Observation

Abstract

Development of multilayer reflectors makes it possible to apply to the grazing and normal incidence X-ray optic system for the cosmic X-ray observation in 0.1-10keV region. For the grazing incidence X-ray telescope, multilayer reflectors have an advantage to make larger the glancing angle and to extend the energy range up to 10keV in the fixed configuration. The normal incidence X-ray telescope is attainable in the energy range below 0.4keV, though the sensitive energy band is limited by Bragg condition estimated from the layer thickness and the number of layer pairs. Multilayers are also useful optical elements to fabricate the X-ray spectrometer and polarimeter. We are fabricating multilayer reflectors with electron beam evaporation method in ultra-high vacuum. Material combinations are Mo/C, Mo/Si and Ni/C with 5-20 layer pairs and the layer thickness of 31-100A. They are deposited on flat and figured substrates of float glass and superpolished glass with the surface roughness of 2-3A (rms). Multilayers thus fabricated are evaluated by measuring the reflectivity, the wavelength resolution and Bragg angle with three characteristic X-rays of Cu-Kα(1.54A), Si-Kα(7.13A) and C-Kα(44.7A). Further investigations are carried out with the monochromatized synchrotron radiation in 14-250A band. The peak reflectivity of Cu-Kα is obtained to be 80% for Mo/C in the grazing incidence and that of λ160A to be more than 30% for Mo/Si in near normal incidence., 資料番号: SA0166840000

Abstract

A multiplying-rod model for individual bacteria is useful to study the bacterial colony microscopically. Here we present an additional model which specifically includes the lubricant secreted by the bacteria.
