2. Hot, Dense Matter Accretion onto a Black Hole

Abstract

The accretion of hot, dense matter which consists of heavy nuclei, free nucleons, degenerated electrons, photons and neutrinos is studied. The composition of free nucleons and their chemical potentials are provided through the equation of state for hot, dense matter proposed by Lattimer and Swesty(1991). When the mass of a central black hole and the accretion rate are selected as $M_{BH} \approx 3{\rm M}_\odot$ and $\dot{M} \approx 0.1{\rm M}_\odot$sec$^{-1}$, which provide the typical luminosity of gamma ray bursts(GRBs), the fraction of free protons in the accreting matter becomes very small, $Y_p \approx 10^{-4}$, while that of free neutrons is closer to unity, $Y_n \approx 0.7$. Then the antielectron neutrinos $\bar{\nu}_e$ can freely escape through the disk but the electron neutrinos $\nu_e$ are almost absorbed in the disk. Thus the frequent collisions of $\bar{\nu}_e$ with $\nu_e$ over the disk couldn't be occurred. The accretion disk is cooled mainly by $\bar{\nu}_e$, which suppresses the increase of temperature and increases the density in the accreting matter such as $T \approx 3\times 10^{10}$K and $\rho \approx 3\times 10^{13}$g/cm$^3$ at the inner side of the disk. The scattering optical depths of $\bar{\nu}_e$ and $\nu_e$ then reach to be very large, $\tau_s(\bar{\nu}_e) \approx \tau_s({\nu}_e) \approx 10^2$. Abstract

During extensive surveys of global Phytophthora diversity 14 new species detected in natural ecosystems in Chile, Indonesia, USA (Louisiana), Sweden, Ukraine and Vietnam were assigned to Phytophthora major Clade 10 based on a multigene phylogeny of nine nuclear and three mitochondrial gene regions. Clade 10 now comprises three subclades. Subclades 10a and 10b contain species with nonpapillate sporangia, a range of breeding systems and a mainly soil-and waterborne lifestyle. These include the previously described P. afrocarpa, P. gallica and P. intercalaris and eight of the new species: P. ludoviciana, P. procera, P. pseudogallica, P. scandinavica, P. subarctica, P. tenuimura, P. tonkinensis and P. ukrainensis. In contrast, all species in Subclade 10c have papillate sporangia and are self-fertile (or homothallic) with an aerial lifestyle including the known P. boehmeriae, P. gondwanensis, P. kernoviae and P. morindae and the new species P. celebensis, P. chilensis, P. javanensis, P. multiglobulosa, P. pseudochilensis and P. pseudokernoviae. All new Phytophthora species differed from each other and from related species by their unique combinations of morphological characters, breeding systems, cardinal temperatures and growth rates. The biogeography and evolutionary history of Clade 10 are discussed. We propose that the three subclades originated via the early divergence of pre-Gondwanan ancestors > 175 Mya into water-and soilborne and aerially dispersed lineages and subsequently underwent multiple allopatric and sympatric radiations during their global spread.

The choroid was imaged using prototypical high-penetration optic coherence tomography (OCT) and the thickness was measured. Axial length, choroidal thickness, and intraocular pressure (IOP) were measured bilaterally at 3 pm 1 day before and 6 days after trabeculectomy. The choroidal thickness was measured at the fovea and four other locations (2 mm superior, temporal, inferior, and nasal to the center of the optic nerve head).Results: The IOP and axial length significantly decreased in eyes that underwent trabeculectomy (P < 0.0001 for the IOP; P < 0.001 for axial length comparisons). The mean choroidal thicknesses significantly increased in eyes that underwent trabeculectomy compared to preoperatively (P < 0.0001 for the fovea; P < 0.01 for four locations around the optic disc). The mean magnitude of change in IOP was correlated positively with the mean magnitude of change in axial length, but not correlated with the mean magnitude of change in choroidal thickness at the fovea that underwent trabeculectomy. Studies on human cerebromicrovascular endothelium (HBEC) and the pathogenesis of hypertension indicate the interrelationship between HBEC production of endothelin-1 and prostanoids and their role in regulating cerebral microcirculation. The production of prostanoids due to arginine vasopressin stimulation differs from that caused by angiotensin II. Dexamethasone increases endothelin-1 production by both pathways.

Abstract

Background: Lung neuroendocrine carcinomas, i.e., small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC), and non-neuroendocrine carcinomas, e.g. squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma are both thought to arise from the same endoderm as respiratory epithelium. However, it is not clear how neuroendocrine carcinomas acquire and maintain their neuroendocrine features. To date, 19 proneural factors that function in the development of the fetal neural system and differentiation of neuroendocrine cells of endodermal origin have been identified. In this study, we investigated the specificity of proneural factor expression in SCLC, lung LCNEC, lung squamous cell carcinoma and lung adenocarcinoma. Methods: RNA was extracted from 3 SCLCs, 3 LCNECs, 10 invasive squamous cell carcinomas and 10 invasive adenocarcinomas. Specific PCR primers were generated for the 19 proneural factors and messenger RNA copy numbers were measured using reverse transcription real time PCR. Differences in expression were then statistically analysed. Results: Insulinoma-associated protein 1(INSM1) and mammalian achaete-scute homolog (MASH) 1 mRNA was significantly higher in SCLCs than in squamous cell carcinomas. Oligodendrocyte transcription factor (OLIG)1 and mammalian atonal homolog (MATH)2 mRNA levels were significantly lower in SCLCs and squamous cell carcinomas than in adenocarcinomas. OLIG2 mRNA levels were significantly lower in LCNECs than in adenocarcinomas. MATH3 mRNA levels in LCNECs were significantly higher than in both squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas. Conclusion: INSM1, MASH1, OLIG1, OLIG2, MATH2 and MATH3 are candidate proneural factors that could potentially differentiate lung neuroendocrine carcinomas from non-neuroendocrine carcinomas. In particular, MATH3 might be an LCNEC-specific factor.

Abstract

A non-papillate, heterothallic Phytophthora species first isolated in 2001 and subsequently from symptomatic roots, crowns and stems of 33 plant species in 25 unrelated botanical families from 13 countries is formally described here as a new species. Symptoms on various hosts included crown and stem rot, chlorosis, wilting, leaf blight, cankers and gumming. This species was isolated from Australia, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, the United Kingdom and United States in association with shrubs and herbaceous ornamentals grown mainly in greenhouses. The most prevalent hosts are English ivy (Hedera helix) and Cistus (Cistus salvifolius). The association of the species with acorn banksia (Banksia prionotes) plants in natural ecosystems in Australia, in affected vineyards (Vitis vinifera) in South Africa and almond (Prunus dulcis) trees in Spain and Turkey in addition to infection of shrubs and herbaceous ornamentals in a broad range of unrelated families are a sign of a wide ecological adaptation of the species and its potential threat to agricultural and natural ecosystems. The morphology of the persistent non-papillate ellipsoid sporangia, unique toruloid lobate hyphal swellings and amphigynous antheridia does not match any of the described species. Phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of the ITS rDNA, EF-1a, and b-tub supported that this organism is a hitherto unknown species. It is closely related to species in ITS clade 7b with the most closely related species being P. sojae. The name Phytophthora niederhauserii has been used in previous studies without the formal description of the holotype. This name is validated in this manuscript with the formal description of Phytophthora niederhauserii Z.G. Abad et J.A. Abad, sp. nov. The name is coined to honor Dr John S. Niederhauser, a notable plant pathologist and the 1990 World Food Prize laureate.
