Bladder tamponade due to radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis can often recur repeatedly and markedly reduce the quality of life. However, no blood test parameter has been studied yet regarding the prevention of bladder tamponade recurrence. An 84-year-old patient with a history of radiation therapy for cervical cancer was repeatedly hospitalized for bladder tamponade due to radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis. At each hospitalization, blood transfusions were performed to treat severe anemia as the first treatment, resulting in hematuria improvement, and the patient was discharged without invasive treatments such as transurethral coagulation. However, anemia developed gradually after each discharge. The anemia progression was obviously unrelated to macrohematuria because macrohematuria did not appear during that period. When the serum hemoglobin level decreased below the physiological range, bladder tamponade recurred. Based on these findings, we posited that the monitoring of the serum hemoglobin level could be useful to predict the occurrence of bladder tamponade. We hypothesized that if the serum hemoglobin level did not fall below the physiological range, bladder tamponade would not occur. We treated chronic anemia after determining its cause and kept serum hemoglobin levels within the physiological range. Since the treatment was initiated, bladder tamponade has not recurred in over 27 months. In this case, the monitoring of the serum hemoglobin level was useful to predict the occurrence of bladder tamponade due to radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis. By maintaining serum hemoglobin levels within the physiological range, we successfully prevented the recurrence of bladder tamponade due to radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis.Keywords: hematuria, blood tests, prevention, recurrence, monitoring

Patients with indwelling urinary catheters (n=7) were excluded. Urine culture was performed 1– 3 days before the biopsy, and all patients received prophylactic cefazolin regardless of culture results. A urine culture was defined as positive if cell density was more than 1× 105 colony-forming units per mL. Baseline characteristics and the incidence of post-biopsy fUTI were compared between patients showing positive pre-biopsy culture results and those showing negative findings.Results: Out of 300, seven patients (2.3%) had positive urine culture results before the biopsy. Age (p=0.077); prostate-specific antigen at diagnosis (p=0.267); prostate volume (p=0.78); number of biopsy cores (p=0.277); percentage of patients testing positive for cancer on biopsy (p=0.71); and percentages of patients with a history of biopsy (p> 0.999), diabetes mellitus (p=0.604), and immunosuppressive medication use (p> 0.999) were similar between the two groups. No patient in the positive urine culture group had post-biopsy fUTI. However, 1.7% (five patients) of the negative urine culture group had the disease (p> 0.999) (four patients with prostatitis and one with pyelonephritis). Among them, two patients were diagnosed by urine culture at the time of post-biopsy fUTI.Conclusion: In asymptomatic patients, positive pre-biopsy cultures were not associated with the development of post-biopsy fUTI.Keywords: urinary tract infection, prostate biopsy, transperineal, urine culture

12. Flexible construction of hierarchical scale-free networks with general exponent

Abstract

Extensive studies have been done to understand the principles behind architectures of real networks. Recently, evidences for hierarchical organization in many real networks have also been reported. Here, we present a new hierarchical model which reproduces the main experimental properties observed in real networks: scale-free of degree distribution $P(k)$ (frequency of the nodes that are connected to $k$ other nodes decays as a power-law $P(k)\sim k^{-\gamma}$) and power-law scaling of the clustering coefficient $C(k)\sim k^{-1}$. The major novelties of our model can be summarized as follows: {\it (a)} The model generates networks with scale-free distribution for the degree of nodes with general exponent $\gamma > 2$, and arbitrarily close to any specified value, being able to reproduce most of the observed hierarchical scale-free topologies. In contrast, previous models can not obtain values of $\gamma > 2.58$. {\it (b)} Our model has structural flexibility because {\it (i)} it can incorporate various types of basic building blocks (e.g., triangles, tetrahedrons and, in general, fully connected clusters of $n$ nodes) and {\it (ii)} it allows a large variety of configurations (i.e., the model can use more than $n-1$ copies of basic blocks of $n$ nodes). 13. Clustering under the line graph transformation: Application to reaction network

Abstract

Many real networks can be understood as two complementary networks with two kind of nodes. This is the case of metabolic networks where the first network has chemical compounds as nodes and the second one has nodes as reactions. The second network can be related to the first one by a technique called line graph transformation (i.e., edges in an initial network are transformed into nodes). Recently, the main topological properties of the metabolic networks have been properly described by means of a hierarchical model. In our work, we apply the line graph transformation to a hierarchical network and the clustering coefficient $C(k)$ is calculated for the transformed network, where $k$ is the node degree. While $C(k)$ follows the scaling law $C(k)\sim k^{-1.1}$ for the initial hierarchical network, $C(k)$ scales weakly as $k^{0.08}$ for the transformed network. 18. CoordiNet: Constrained Dynamics Learning for State Coordination over Graph

Abstract

A neural architecture to efficiently coordinate the transitions of state variables (states) over a graph is proposed. We consider the coordination of the time evolution of the state variables associated with the nodes on a graph. The states are associated with physical attributes of agents, e.g., the speed and/or location of vehicles. Efficient coordination then corresponds to the optimization of dynamics (how fast do vehicles travel) that may be subject to constraints (travel must be collision-free). The aim of this paper is (i) the formulation of learnable constrained dynamics which governs the transition of states under constraints over a graph and (ii) to show its industrial application. Firstly, we formulate continuous ordinary differential equations (ODEs), namely forward propagation of state transitions over a graph and backward propagation to optimize model parameters for the learnable constrained dynamics. Discretization of these continuous ODEs results in the neural architecture CoordiNet. Secondly, as an application of CoordiNet, we address a traffic coordination problem by learning constrained dynamics such that vehicles can travel as fast as possible without collisions. Simulation experiments of traffic coordination confirm that our method maximizes the vehicles' speed states while avoiding collisions.

This paper proposes a novel approach for moving object detection in video sequences captured by nonstationary cameras The approach called RCMFD uses region based correlated motion fields decomposition which exploits the sparsity of foreground motions against the low rank structured background motion The method uses spatial correlations of region based features to boost accurate change detection for motion estimation and motion features across object boundaries are used to exploit moving objects A dense optical field which is robust to illumination changes and noise is established using cross correlation of region based features and a robust principal component analysis RPCA model is applied to partition exploited motions into background and foreground motions Experiments demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method on real video sequences
