The fast depletion of conventional fuel supplies has forced the world to find suitable substitutes to overcome the expected energy crisis. Fossil fuels also contribute to global warming because of their harmful emissions. Biofuels are sustainable and environment friendly. Biodiesel can be sourced from both edible and non-edible oils to replace fossil fuels. To avoid a shortage of food supply, it is preferred to produce biodiesel from non-edible oils. In this research, Litchi chinensis seed oil (LSO) is used as a feedstock to synthesize biodiesel employing transesterification using a microwave oven. The catalyst, potassium hydroxide (KOH), used in this research was extracted from potato waste. Sundried potato waste was converted into ash. The produced ash is then dissolved in distilled water, leading to a 34% yield of KOH. The transesterification achieves a 92.9% conversion rate under the conditions: 30% microwave power utilization, a catalyst loading of 15% (W/W), a stirring speed of 700 RPM, and a methanol concentration of 70% (V/V) with an 8-min reaction time. Response surface methodology (RSM), in comparison with artificial neural networks (ANNs), has been utilized for the optimization of biodiesel yield, giving efficient results with errors of 0.003% for RSM and 0.005% for ANN. Consequently, the study reports optimized biodiesel yields of 92.9% (experimental), 93.27% (RSM), and 92.40% (ANN). Physicochemical properties such as kinematic viscosity (4.4 mm2/s) at 40°C, density (875kg/m3) at 15°C, cetane number (53.2), calorific value (38.8 MJ/kg), flash point (175°C), oxidative stability (6.1 h), and cold flow properties were determined with respect to the ASTM and EN standards. The findings reveal that biofuels primarily support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 and 13, with the prime focus on "affordable and clean energy" and "climate action," respectively. Friction and wear are very crucial aspects of the performance, service life, and the operational costs for a mechanical component or equipment. To reduce the friction and wear at the interface of the sliding or mating parts, different conventional binary coatings like TiN, CrN, TiC, etc., have been used in the last two decades. But ternary nitride coatings have replaced the binary coatings due to better tribo-mechanical properties. Now, ternary nitride coatings are being extensively used in several fields such as cutting tools, machinery parts, orthopedic implants, microelectronics, marine equipment, decorative purposes, automotive, aerospace industry, etc. Many researchers have developed and investigated the ternary nitride coatings for different applications. Nonetheless, there is a huge research potential in the development and optimization of the tribo-mechanical properties of the ternary nitride coatings. Therefore, tribo-mechanical studies of the ternary nitride coatings are needed for fostering the new industrial applications. This paper is focused to summarize and compare the tribo-mechanical properties of the ternary nitride coatings comprehensively and aims to explore the novel research directions in the development of the ternary nitride coatings. Recent developments in converting the thermal energy of exhaust gasses of automobiles into electric power directly, require an extensive simulation and design of appropriate TEG system. This work aims to create a physical model of engine exhaust system using Simscape language to simulate waste heat recovery from the exhaust gasses using (Na, K) co-doped polycrystalline tin selenide, SnSe, TE material. This particular material exhibits a high Seebeck coefficient and extremely low lattice thermal conductivity in power generation because of phonons scattering by the rattlers (Na, K atoms) and nanostructuring. In the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment, a transient simulation is done for the recovery of waste heat from a 1.5 liters engine using these specific material-based TE modules. According to the results obtained, at the temperature gradient of 285 K across its sides, electrical power of 10.4 W with a conversion efficiency of almost 5% is produced from one module. The total system output power was 477 W at the exhaust gas inlet temperature of 900 K to the octagonal HEx on which the modules are mounted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a Monte Carlo-based factor-wise sensitivity analysis conducted on the performance variables of a Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) process. Using lab-scale MBE equipment, magnesium oxide (MgO 111) films are grown on a hexagonal silicon carbide 6H-SiC (0001) substrate. The thin film surface chemistry in terms of O‒Mg and OH‒Mg bonding states is examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A multi-layer perceptron is used to model the process. Monte Carlo experiments are conducted on the process model to study the causal relationship between the critical process control variables and the key performance indicators. The sensitivity of O‒Mg and OH‒Mg bonding states in MgO films to each of the four process control variables (growth time, substrate temperature, magnesium source temperature, and percentage starting oxygen) is examined. Each control variable is varied individually while keeping other control variables constant at their mid values in one case and randomly varying in another case. The sensitivity of the performance variables to the interaction between a select set of control variable pairs is also examined. The interaction between substrate temperature and oxygen on the starting surface is found to significantly affect the dynamics of OH‒Mg bonding state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
