This might depend on different inflammatory mechanisms initiated by bleeding events of different origins. The aim of the present study was to explore the systemic inflammatory response in spontaneous SAH, comparing aSAH and smSAH.Methods: We performed a prospective observational study over a consecutive series of patients with SAH. For these patients, we collected all clinical data and, furthermore, performed venous blood sampling over six time points to analyze blood cells. We further performed the analysis of lymphocytes and monocytes by means of flow cytometry to quantify common subtypes. Statistical analysis included a t-student test, Chi-square test, multivariate logistic regression, and ROC analysis.Results: 48 patients were included: six (12.5%) with a diagnosis of spontaneous smSAH, and forty-two patients (87.5%) with aSAH. Significant differences on Day 0 were found for neutrophils and a systemic neuro-inflammatory index, namely, systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI). At the ROC analysis, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and SIRI exhibited satisfactory predictive power on day 0. At the multivariable logistic regression analysis, the combined index (NLR, LMR, SIRI at day 0) yielded an OR of 0.59 (95% CI 0.29– 1.21]). LMR at day 0 yielded an OR of 1.25 ([95% CI 0.94– 1.68]), NLR at day 0 exhibited an OR of 0.68 ([95% CI 0.42– 1.09]), and SIRI at day 0 displayed an OR of 0.31 ([95% CI 0.06– 1.49]).Conclusion: This preliminary study indicated a possible role of some inflammatory indices that point out the importance of innate and adaptive immunity in the etiopathogenetic mechanisms. 2. Bridging Sciences: An Integrated Approach to Supporting Student Literacy Development

Abstract

We are at a pivotal time in our country. As reading achievement declines pre-and post-COVID-19, large portions of our nation's students continue to be underserved by our education system while many teachers do not have needed support to provide evidence-based literacy instruction (NAEP, 2024). In this white paper, the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) and leading researchers across diverse disciplines urge policymakers to consider the full breadth of research on literacy to enable strong reading development and to improve teacher knowledge and their ability to deliver rigorous instruction. We demonstrate evidence for an integrated approach to building foundational reading skills that also focus on comprehension, language, knowledge, and social and emotional learning. Since the 2000 National Reading Panel, new insights have emerged from a comprehensive understanding of the Science of Reading about the nature of reading, how students develop their skills in it, and effective teaching pedagogy. In many states, legislation has been passed in the past few years emphasizing a comprehensive approach to improving reading and literacy. While this is a good start, more must be done to support the literacy development of all students and close gaps in reading achievement. Such an undertaking cannot be achieved without comprehensive and long-term literacy programs based on solid empirical evidence. Current research in the fields of human development, learning sciences, and neurosciences build upon each other and demonstrate that learning environments and instruction must support students' social and emotional development and well-being to drive student literacy development. The white paper also puts forward research and policy recommendations to support a comprehensive approach to supporting student literacy development and instruction through: (1) Strengthening Education Research, including by: (a) Updating the National Reading Panel and Commissioning Studies on Literacy Development; and (b) Bridging the Science of Reading and the Science of Learning and Development; (2) Strengthening Teacher Preparation and Professional Development; and (3) Expanding Access to Reading Supports in the Classroom, School, and Community Libraries.

6. The Secret Life of Connectives: A Taxonomy to Study Individual Differences in Mid-Adolescents' Use of Connectives in Writing to Persuade

Abstract

Mid-adolescence has been identified as a period of considerable potential growth in the language skills and practices that support reading and writing at school, but little research has examined mid-adolescents' use of connectives in school-relevant persuasive writing. In this study, we define connectives as cohesive devices that signal to a reader logical relations between ideas or organizational relations in a text. Drawing from Halliday and Matthiesen (Halliday's introduction to functional grammar, Routledge, 2014) and Hyland (Metadiscourse: exploring interaction in writing, Continuum, 2005), we propose a comprehensive taxonomy of connectives that guided our examination of developmental trends and individual differences in the use of connectives in persuasive essays written by a socioeconomically and ethnically diverse cross-sectional sample of U.S. public-school mid-adolescents in grades 5 to 8 (N = 512). Our analysis revealed (1) developmental trends and individual differences at different grade levels and (2) identified students' connective use as a predictor of overall writing quality above and beyond students' receptive language skills and sociodemographic factors.

Effective communication between patients with MS and their neurologist is important for improving clinical outcomes and quality of life. Methods: A closed-ended online market research survey was used to assess the current state of MS care from the perspective of both patients with MS (≥18 years of age) and neurologists who treat MS from Europe and the US and to gain insight into perceptions of treatment expectations/goals, treatment decisions, treatment challenges, communication, and satisfaction with care, based on current clinical practice. Results: A total of 900 neurologists and 982 patients completed the survey, of whom 46% self-identified as having remitting-relapsing MS, 29% secondary progressive MS, and 11% primary progressive MS. Overall, patients felt satisfied with their disease-modifying therapy (DMT); satisfaction related to comfort in speaking with their neurologist and participation in their DMT decision-making process. Patients who self-identified as having relapsing-remitting MS were more likely to be very satisfied with their treatment. Top challenges identified by patients in managing their DMT were cost, side effects/tolerability of treatment, and uncertainty if treatment was working. Half of the patients reported skipping doses, but only 68% told their health care provider that they did so. Conclusion: Several important differences in perception were identified between patients and neurologists concerning treatment selection, satisfaction, expectations, goals, and comfort discussing symptoms, as well as treatment challenges and skipped doses. The study results emphasize that patient/neurologist communication and patient input into the treatment decision-making process likely influence patient satisfaction with treatment. Abstract

Abstract Background The integration of positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) holds promise for advancing diagnostic imaging capabilities. The METRICS project aims to develop cyclotron-driven production of 52Mn for PET/MRI imaging. Results Using the 52Cr(p,n)52Mn reaction, we designed chromium metal targets via Spark Plasma Sintering and developed a separation procedure for isolating 52Mn. Labeling tests were conducted with traditional chelators (i.e. S-2-(4-Isothiocyanatobenzyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane tetraacetic acid) and the 1.4-dioxa-8-azaspiro[4.5]decane-8- carbodithioate ligand to produce radioactive complexes suitable for PET/MRI applications. Our methodology yielded high-quality 52Mn suitable for PET radiopharmaceuticals and PET/MRI imaging. Preliminary studies on phantom imaging using microPET and clinical MRI demonstrated the efficacy of our approach. Conclusions The developed technology offers a promising avenue for producing 52Mn and enhancing PET/MRI imaging capabilities. Further in vivo investigations are warranted to evaluate the potential advantages of this hybrid imaging technique.

11. Midadolescents' Language Learning at School: A Response to Open Peer Commentaries

Abstract

Language-in-education research can contribute to transformative progress toward educational equity and excellence. Although this assertion is likely uncontroversial within the field of language in education, agreeing on which types of research lead to which transformative progress is much less straightforward. The thought-provoking commentaries on my original article provided a range of important perspectives on this issue. Among the many relevant insights raised by commentators, I focus in this reply on seven claims related to my work on midadolescents' school-relevant language learning with connections to the larger language-in-education research field. My goal is to state my own position clearly on issues often interpreted differently through various lenses, prone to misguided assumptions, or insufficiently discussed. I draw from years of work in research-practice partnerships with public schools in the United States and abroad as well as from my accumulated personal experiences as an adult immigrant to the United States, as a mother of two Spanish-English bilingual and biliterate young women, and as an educator. To my readers, I ask that they interpret the claims discussed below not as isolated reflections but within the context of my call for moving from pedagogies of silence (Oliveira, 2022) to pedagogies of voices as described in my original article (Uccelli, 2023). Below, I first introduce and discuss each of the seven claims. I close this reply by inviting readers to work across practice and research and across paradigms and methods in multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams committed to working and learning together towards transforming education.

20. The Language Demands of Analytical Reading and Writing at School

Abstract

Analytical writing poses particularly challenging, yet often overlooked, language demands that need attention in educational research and practice. In this article, I discuss the Core Analytical Language Skills (CALS) construct and its relevance for school reading and writing. CALS refer to the set of learners' school-relevant language resources that are of high utility to understanding analytical texts across content areas. After a brief review of the relations between mid-adolescents' language and their school reading and writing proficiencies, I offer illustrative examples of individual differences in middle-schoolers' analytical writing and CALS. I argue, on the basis of recent but extensive empirical evidence, that without understanding and addressing the immense variability in the language resources that students bring to school and the language demands of reading- and writing-to-learn tasks and texts, schools run the risk of maintaining and even exacerbating the inequalities that exist in the larger society.

21. Textual Borrowing in Science Summaries: Upper-Elementary and Middle School Students Learning to Write the Language of Science

Abstract

In writing science summaries, student writers frequently borrow language fragments from source texts. While taking a text's ideas verbatim is commonly considered a failure in writers' expected use of their own words or even plagiarism, imitating "linguistic chunks" from skilled speakers is also an effective practice in language development. This study argues for the need to investigate textual borrowing (TB) from a developmental perspective. A total of 956 U.S. upper-elementary and middle school L1 students were administered a reading comprehension test, a written summary task, and a receptive academic language assessment. Multiple indices were generated to capture TB frequency, length, and one particular function of TB (i.e., definitions). Results revealed that 68% of summaries contained at least one incidence of TB. As expected, both TB frequency and length were negatively associated with reading comprehension and academic language skills. However, students in higher grades demonstrated significantly more and longer TB in comparison to their younger counterparts when summarizing the same passage. In addition, the frequency of borrowed word strings and the ratio of definitional borrowing were positively associated with summary writing quality, and the latter association was found to be stronger for students with higher academic language skills. In response, I present insights from recent innovative evidence-based pedagogical frameworks and tools that reveal promising paths forward. I close by calling for research with a dual focus on equity and rigor that supports moving away from "pedagogies of silence," which silence marginalized students' voices, damaging their identities and obstructing their learning, towards "pedagogies of voices," which affirm all learners' voices while amplifying their language repertoires and their critical learning. Abstract

64Cu is gaining recognition not only for its diagnostic capabilities in nuclear medical imaging but also for its therapeutic and theranostic potential. The simultaneous βˉ and Auger emissions of 64Cu can be utilized to induce a therapeutic effect on cancerous lesions. The finding of the exceptional biodistribution characteristics of the radionuclide 64Cu, when administered as basic copper ions, has highlighted its potential therapeutic application in cancer treatment. Preclinical and clinical research on the effectiveness of [64Cu]CuCl2 as a theranostic radiopharmaceutical has commenced only in the past decade. Current clinical studies are increasingly demonstrating the high specificity and uptake of [64Cu]Cu2+ by malignant tissues during early cancer progression, indicating its potential for early cancer diagnosis across various organs. This short review aims to present the latest preclinical studies involving [64Cu]CuCl2, offering valuable insights for researchers planning new in vitro and in vivo studies to explore the theranostic potential of [64Cu]Cu2+.

27. Exploring the Cross-Linguistic Contribution of Spanish and English Academic Language Skills to English Text Comprehension for Middle-Grade Dual Language Learners

Abstract

In this study, we examine the unique and shared contributions of Spanish and English core academic language skills (CALS) to English reading comprehension in a population of Spanish-English dual language learners in Grades 4 and 5 (n = 165). We focus on cross-disciplinary CALS, operationalized as sets of high-utility lexical, syntactic and discourse resources prevalent in school texts. This study finds that Spanish and English CALS are positively and significantly related, and, further, that both sets of skills exert a unique positive influence on English reading comprehension. Aligned with an interpretation of linguistic interdependence between Spanish and English academic language skills, results document their cross-linguistic contribution to reading comprehension for students enrolled in educational programs that foster literacy and content learning regularly in two languages.

Abstract

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in Reading aims to measure reading comprehension for students in the United States and to monitor progress in our education system. NAEP Reading is developed based on an assessment framework document that is periodically revised to reflect the latest understandings about reading comprehension and its assessment. A key goal of the Visioning Panel (VP) and the Development Panel (DP) charged with updating the NAEP Reading Assessment Framework for 2026 was to lay the foundation for an assessment that made progress toward greater fairness, equity, and validity. In this essay, we discuss how the Framework development process unfolded and its results. We document the unusual ways the National Assessment Governing Board ("the Board") shaped the development process. We provide evidence that a small group of Board members aimed to preserve the status quo in reading assessment by downplaying reliance on expertise and authoritative sources of research on reading, learning, and assessment and by removing attention to equity in NAEP Reading. We also discuss both successful (i.e., approved by the Board) and unsuccessful (i.e., rejected by the Board) recommendations for changes to the 2026 Framework that initially were proposed by the DP. We end by considering how, despite the efforts of the small group of Board members, we as a literacy field can improve the nature and impact of our large-scale reading assessments, and NAEP in particular.

30. Academic Language and Listening Comprehension--Two Sides of the Same Coin? An Empirical Examination of Their Dimensionality, Relations to Reading Comprehension, and Assessment Modality

Abstract

Two widely studied language skills in relation to reading comprehension are listening comprehension skill and academic language proficiency. Although their constituent skills and theoretical accounts of how they are related to reading comprehension share a large overlap, they have been studied in separate lines of work. In this study, we investigated the dimensionality of listening comprehension and academic language proficiency tasks, their relations to reading comprehension, and the impact of assessment modality (reading vs. oral language) of academic language proficiency, using data from children in Grade 2 (N = 350). Two cohorts of children from the same schools were assessed on the same set of listening comprehension, word reading, reading comprehension, and academic language tasks. Whereas the first three constructs were assessed in identical manner across the 2 cohorts, academic language tasks were assessed in different modalities (1 cohort in a reading context and the other cohort in an oral language context). Academic language proficiency and listening comprehension skill tasks were best described as having a general oral language construct that captured common variance among all the tasks as well as having specific residual factors. Students' average performance on academic language tasks was lower in the reading context, wherein students' reading skill was also captured beyond the academic "language" proficiency. Across assessment modalities, it was the general oral language construct, not the specific factors, that was reliable, and consistently and most dominantly related to reading comprehension after accounting for word reading. Background and purposeTo identify changes in the choroidal thickness (CT) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with and without optic neuritis (ON) using enhanced-depth-imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT).MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 96 eyes with MS and 28 eyes of healthy controls. All participants underwent an ophthalmologic examination and EDI-OCT scanning (Spectralis, Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) to assess the CT and the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. 40. The Role of Language Skills in Mid-Adolescents' Science Summaries

Abstract

Mid-adolescence is a period of considerable potential growth in the language for academic writing. Yet, to date, few writing studies explore language development during this period and even fewer focus on longitudinal or diverse samples. In this study, we examined the development of language skills for academic writing in a socio-economically diverse sample followed from sixth to seventh grade (n = 124). In each grade, participants wrote summaries of a science text. Subsequently, summaries were scored for writing quality (WQ) and analyzed for productive language skills (lexico-syntactic and discourse features). Participants completed a receptive academic language assessment and a test that measured reading comprehension of the source text. First, we examined if WQ or productive language skills changed over time. Next, we tested if Grade 6 productive and receptive language skills predicted Grade 7 WQ. Results revealed syntactic growth over time. Grade 6 use of connectives and receptive language skills emerged as predictors of Grade 7 WQ.

Abstract

Abstract Background Achieving good adherence to self-injected treatments for multiple sclerosis can be difficult. Injection devices may help to overcome some of the injection-related barriers to adherence that can be experienced by patients. We sought to assess short-term adherence to, and tolerability of, interferon (IFN) β-1a administered via electronic autoinjection device in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Methods BRIDGE (RebiSmart to self-inject Rebif serum-free formulation in a multidose cartridge) was a 12-week, multicentre, open-label, single-arm, observational, Phase IV study in which patients self-administered IFN β-1a (titrated to 44 μg), subcutaneously (sc), three times weekly, via electronic autoinjection device. Patients were assessed at baseline and 4-weekly intervals to Week 12 or early termination (ET) for: physical examinations; diary card completion (baseline, Weeks 4, 8 only); neurological examinations (baseline, Week 12/ET only); MS Treatment Concern Questionnaire (MSTCQ; Weeks 4, 8, 12 only); Convenience Questionnaire (Week 12 only); Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS); and Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task (PASAT; baseline only). Adherence was defined as administration of ≥ 80% of scheduled injections, recorded by the autoinjection device. Results Overall, 88.2% (105/119; intent-to-treat population) of patients were adherent; 67.2% (80/119) administered all scheduled injections. Medical reasons accounted for 35.6% (31/87) of missed injections, forgetfulness for 20.6% (18/87). Adherence did not correlate with baseline Expanded Disability Status Scale (P = 0.821) or PASAT (P = 0.952) scores, or pre-study therapy (P = 0.303). No significant changes (baseline-Week 12) in mean HADS depression (P = 0.482) or anxiety (P = 0.156) scores were observed. 'Overall convenience' was the most important reported benefit of the autoinjection device. Device features associated with handling and ease of use were highly rated. Mean MSTCQ scores for 'flu-like' symptoms (P = 0.022) and global side effects (P = 0.002) significantly improved from Week 4-12. Mean MSTCQ scores for pain at injection site and injection pain increased from Week 4-12 (P < 0.001). Adverse events were mild/moderate. No new safety signals were identified. Conclusion Convenience and ease of use of the autoinjection device may improve adherence and, therefore, outcomes, in patients with RRMS receiving sc IFN β-1a. 44. Core Academic Language Skills: Validating a Construct in Linguistically Dissimilar Settings

Abstract

Recently a novel instrument -- the Core Academic Language Instrument (CALS-I) -- aimed at testing a constellation of school-relevant English language skills was developed and validated for use in the United States (Uccelli, Barr, Dobbs, Galloway, Meneses and Sánchez, 2015. Core Academic Language Skills: An expanded operational construct and a novel instrument to chart school-relevant language proficiency in preadolescent and adolescent learners. "Applied Psycholinguistics" 36: 1077-1109). The unitary construct tested by the CALS-I was dubbed Core Academic Language Skills (CALS) and it aimed to identify and describe a set of skills that comprise academic language proficiency of high utility across curricular content areas. This study piloted a version of the CALS-I that was slightly modified for use in South Africa targeting specifically middle-school learners. The results of this study reveal that the CALS construct functions almost identically to the United States sample when tested in South Africa, and this provides strong evidence for the fundamental and cross-cutting nature of these pedagogically relevant skills.

Abstract

The success of clinical trials of selective B-cell depletion in patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS) and primary progressive MS has led to a conceptual shift in the understanding of MS pathogenesis, away from the classical model in which T cells were the sole central actors and toward a more complex paradigm with B cells having an essential role in both the inflammatory and neurodegenerative components of the disease process. The role of B cells in MS was selected as the topic of the 27th Annual Meeting of the European Charcot Foundation. Results of the meeting are presented in this concise review, which recaps current concepts underlying the biology and therapeutic rationale behind B-cell-directed therapeutics in MS, and proposes strategies to optimize the use of existing anti-B-cell treatments and provide future directions for research in this area. Abstract

Abstract Background The hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) niche of the bone marrow is comprised of HSCs, osteoblasts, endothelial cells and a stromal component of non-hematopoietic multipotent cells of mesenchymal origin named "mesenchymal stem cells" (MSCs). Results Here we studied the global transcriptional profile of murine MSCs with immuno-therapeutic potential and compared it with that of 486 publicly available microarray datasets from 12 other mouse tissues or cell types. Principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering identified a unique pattern of gene expression capable of distinctively classifying MSCs from other tissues and cells. We then performed an analysis aimed to identify absolute and relative abundance of transcripts in all cell types. We found that the set of transcripts uniquely expressed by MSCs is enriched in transcription factors and components of the Wnt signaling pathway. The analysis of differentially expressed genes also identified a set of genes specifically involved in the HSC niche and is complemented by functional studies that confirm the findings. Interestingly, some of these genes play a role in the maintenance of HSCs in a quiescent state supporting their survival and preventing them from proliferating and differentiating. We also show that MSCs modulate T cell functions in vitro and, upon in vivo administration, ameliorate experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Conclusion Altogether, these findings provide novel and important insights on the mechanisms of T cell function regulation by MSCs and help to cement the rationale for their application in the treatment of autoimmune diseases.
