ANTIOXIDANTS ,OXIDATIVE stress ,FREE radicals ,PHYSIOLOGY ,CONSERVATION biology - Abstract
Antioxidants provide protection against free radicals formed as a result of increased metabolism in living organisms and the damage these radicals cause to the cell. Determining the antioxidant levels can help eco-physiologists in the field in understanding the physiological state of the animal at that moment and in conservation biology. In this study, TOC (Total Oxidant Capacity), TAC (Total Antioxidant Capacity) and OSI (Oxidative Stress Index) values of 12 Long-legged Buzzards (Buteo rufinus), 7 Common Buzzards (Buteo buteo) and 6 Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos), 15 Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea), 7 Eurasian Eagle Owls (Bubo bubo) brought to rehabilitation centre with injuries due to various reasons were examined. The birds brought to the center were first examined physically. Species-specific rooms were kept until each bird had recovered. After being rehabilitated, blood was taken from the birds 1-2 days before being released into the wild. As a result of blood analysis, TOC and OSI values were found to be high in Eurasian Eagle Owl, Golden Eagle, Long-legged Buzzard and Common Buzzards which were brought with a diagnosis of gunshot wounds, soft tissue trauma, femur or wing fractures. Although these birds had been rehabilitated, the reason for the high TOC and OSI values in individuals with these diagnoses may be the trauma experienced by these free-living birds in nature and then being held in captivity. After the birds were treated and rehabilitated, they were released back to nature in habitats specific to each species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, it was aimed to examine the biochemical changes, hematological changes and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytology and blood serum of cattle with head-eye form of Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF). For this purpose, 22 cattle diagnosed with "head-eye form" of MCF and clinically healthy 10 cattle were evaluated. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were collected from all cattle. In sera, AST, urea, glucose, CK (P<0.05), LDH levels (P<0.01) were found be high, ALT, ALP, cholesterol (P<0.05), Ca, total protein (P<0.01) and Mg, albumine and Fe levels (P<0.001) were found to be low in MCF group when compared to the control group. In CSF, Ca (P<0.01) and total protein levels (P<0.001) were found high glucose level (P<0.05) was found low in MCF group when compared to the control group. In haematology, some parameters were determined to be different between the groups. In cytological results of CSF in MCF group, polymorphonuclear leucocytes, lymphocytes, erytrocytes, macrophages and plasma cells were determined. In conclusion, since there were a limited number of studies examining biochemical, cytologic and hematological results of MCF especially in CSF, the results from our study were thought to be important for future studies in which viral diseases affects the nervous system of cattles. Obesity and fatty liver is a widespread growing health problem in human with detrimental consequences that encouraged researchers to find ways to overcome it. In this study, gemfibrozil and L-carnitine were evaluated in prevention of obesity and hepatic lipidosis also the role of L-carnitine in avoiding side effects of gemfibrozil was investigated. The study involved 56 New-Zealand Albino rabbits, divided into 2 main groups and then subdivided into 4 equal groups (n=7). The groups I (normal diet), II (normal diet+gemfibrozil), III (normal diet+L-carnitine) and IV (normal diet+gemfibrozil+L-carnitine) received normal diet and the groups V (fat rich diet), VI (fat rich diet+gemfibrozil), VII (fat rich diet+L-carnitine) and VIII (fat rich diet+gemfibrozil+L-carnitine) received fat rich diet for 8 weeks. Animals were blood sampled and wieght weekly during the experiment and at the end of the experiment for determination of biochemical (HDL, High-density lipoproteins; LDL, Low-density lipoprotein; VLDL, Very low-density lipoprotein; ALT, Alanine amino transferase; AST, Aspartate aminotransferase; GGT, Gamma glutamyltransferase; GLDH, Glutamate lactate dehydrogenase; LDH, Lactate dehydrogenase) and oxidative stress (MDA, Malondialdehyde; GSH, Reduced gluthation; NO, Nitric oxide; SOD, Superoxide dismutase) parameters. All rabbits were euthanised for histopathological examination and for distrubition of Peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPARs) in tissues by immunohystochemistry. Liver enzymes increased in fat rich diet group throughout the study. Addition of gemfibrozil and L-carnitin in fat rich diet resulted in statistically significant decreasein lipid profile when compared to those only received fat rich diet. Beta oxidation of fat rich diet group was significantly higher than that of groups additionally received gemfibrozil and L-carnitine. Immunohistochemistry revealed an increase in PPAR PPAR-α and β but not PPAR-γ expression in fat rich diet group. On the contrary L-carnitin administration did have any effect on tissue PPAR expression. PPAR-α expression differed between groups received gemfibrozil and fat rich diet and those did not. Fat rich diet increased MDA level while decreased GSH and catalase. Addition of gemfibrozil and L-carnitine to fat rich diet significantly decreased MDA level and increased antioxidants. The most marked macroscopy finding was abdominal fat increase in fat rich diet group (group V). On the other hand gemfibrozil administration resulted in significant abdominal fat decrease. Furthermore decreased abdominal fat was marked in gemfibrozil and L-carnitine given animals (group VIII) when compared to other groups. In conclusion, gemfibrozil and L-carnitine administration alleviated abdominal and hepatic fattening and improved lipid profile. Gemfibrozil also caused a significant increase in PPAR-α expression in the liver. It may be of use in avoiding abdominal fat (obesity) due to high fat by use of gemfibrozil, a synthetic PPAR-a ligand, and L-carnitine.

Bu sonuçlar intraperitoneal kitosan uygulamasının adezyon görülme oranını ve adezyon direncini düşürdüğünü göstermektedir., In the present study, it is aimed to investigate the effect of intraperitoneal use of chitosan on the prevention of peritoneal adhesion formation in the postoperative period immediately after ovariohysterectomy. A total of 15 female Wistar-albino rats weighing 250-350 gr were used for this researcher. Rats were housed in room temperature (22±2°C) and humidity, 12h light-dark cycles. The rats housed in single cages were fed with standard laboratory food and water. After the rats were anesthetized with appropriate anesthetic methods, ovarium and uterus were removed according to the procedure standard procedures used in routines. Rats were randomly divided into 2 groups. Chitosan groups (n=8) were injected intraperitoneally as a single dose mixing 2.5 mL of physiological saline solution with a dose of 50 mg/kg of chitosan immediately after OVH operation. Rats in the other group (n=7), which were evaluated as the control group, were given only 2.5 mL of saline intraperitoneally different from the first group. Body temperatures were recorded on the day of the operation (day 0) and on the 7th and 14th day following the operation. The animals were euthanized 21 days after the operation with a high dose of anesthetic. There was no difference between the groups in terms of body temperatures. Rat without adhesion was found to be higher in the chitosan group. In addition, adhesion resistance was found to be lower in chitosan group. Especially, the number of adhesions score 3 was higher in the control group. These results show that intraperitoneal chitosan application decreases the adhesion rate and adhesion resistance.

Sonuç olarak, Gürcü keçilerinde geleneksel şekilde yapılan beslenmenin farklı dönemlerinde, bazı serum biyokimyasal parametrelerin önemli ölçüde etkilendiği tespit edildi., Turkey, one of the local genetic resources and the number of studies conducted on Gurcu goats descending from day to day is very limited. In this study, it was aimed to determine the changes in some biochemical parameters in the Gurcu goats before pasture, during pasture season and at the end of pasture feeding. Respiratory rate (R), pulse rate (P) and rectal temperature (T) of goats (n=30) were determined. Blood samples were taken in the middle of each period, before pasture (4 months), pasture feeding (4 months) and after pasture (4 months). It was found that glucose (GLUK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), triglyceride (TG) and total protein (TP) concentration were found to be significantly lower in the pre-pasture period than other periods. While there was no statistical difference between the periods in the calcium (Ca) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) level, it was determined that the magnesium (Mg) level was higher than the pasture after the pasture. Low density lipoprotein (LDL-C) concentration was determined to increase in pasture and post-pasture process. As a result, it was found that some serum biochemical parameters were significantly affected in different periods of traditional feeding in Gurcu goats.

- Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine changes in total sialic acid (TSA), malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) levels on sera and CSF and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels on blood in cattle with Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF). For this purpose 17 cattle which clinically diagnosed "head-eye form" of MCF and clinically healthy 10 cattle were evaluated. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were taken from the animals on the MCF diagnosed group MDA, GSH, NO, eNOS, iNOS, and TSA values were 25.65 +/- 0.42 mu mol/L, 37.21 +/- 1.12 mg/dL, 30.61 +/- 0.41 mu mol L, 4.05 +/- 0.09 U/L and 10.98 +/- 0.35 U/L, 88.33 +/- 1.03 mg/dL, on the control group 13.77 +/- 0.55 mu mol/ L, 60.06 +/- 1.73 mg/dL, 11.27 +/- 0.4 mu mol/ L, 3.12 +/- 0.18 U/L, 5.55 +/- 0.3 U/L and 63.60 +/- 1.86 mg/dL respectively, and all parameter changes between the groups were determined to be statistically significant (P< 0.001). On the CSF, no statistically significant difference between taken from MCF diagnosed group and healthy group. NO value and iNOS activity obtained from control groups CSF were relatively higher than the same group's serum whereas eNOS activities were found to be low. The study group consisting of MCF diagnosed cattle's serum were found to have NO value, eNOS and iNOS activities relatively higher than the same group's CSF values. As a result, it was concluded that there is a need for more comprehensive studies for better understanding the reason of failure to obtain the significant changes of animals diagnosed MCF that determine in blood but not in CSF.

Undestanding the zoonotic risk posed by pox viruses in companion animals is important for both human and animal health. contagious ecthyma is highly contagious, zoonotic, viral skin disease that affects sheep, goats and some other domesticated and wild animals. In this present study was detected and evaluated levels of plasma paraoxonase activity (PON1), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), total sialic acid (TSA), malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) and total blood glutathione (GSH) concentrations in healthy sheep and natural infected sheeps with ecthyma. In healthy sheep, laboratory results were determined as PON1 218.54 +/- 17.93 U/L, TSA 59.89 +/- 5.59 mg/dL, HDL 48.4 +/- 4.88 mg/dL, MDA 8.58 +/- 0.80 mu mol/L, NO 7.78 +/- 1.02 mu mol/L and GSH 21.11 +/- 3.70 mg/dL. These values were found 174.92 +/- 18.68 U/L, 70.1 +/- 6.56 mg/dL, 37.9 +/- 6.47 mg/dL, 11.26 +/- 1.06 mu mol/L, 12.44 +/- 1.90 mu mol/L, 7.79 +/- 0.90 mg/dL respectively in sheeps wich are infected by ecthyma. As a result, it was concluded that there is oxidative stress due to imbalance between pro-oxidant and antioxidant molecules in sheep which are infected by ecthyma, and this imbalance is shaped by increasing oxidant levels.

The study included 10 clinically healthy calves (group 1) and 10 clinical cases of dermatophytosis (group 2). The influence of dermatophytosis on some serum biochemical profiles and the antioxidant system was investigated. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), uric acid, nitric oxide (NO), total sialic acid (TSA), lipid-bound sialic acid (LBSA), total protein (TP), and albumin levels were measured in groups 1 and 2. Calves in group 2 had significantly higher (P < 0.001) MDA, NO, TSA, and LBSA levels, and a higher P < 0.01 TSA:TP ratio; however, GSH and uric acid levels were significantly lower (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the groups in total protein and albumin. These findings suggest a relationship between dermatophytosis, the antioxidant system, and lipid oxidation.

Zylexis is a paraimmunity activator containing inactive paropoxvirus ovis which has been utilised as a protective against variety of infectious diseases. Nitric oxide (NO), reactive oxygen species and sialic acids are mediators playing important roles in inflammation and the regulation of immune response. In this study, effects of Zylexis administration on blood glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), total and lipid-bound sialic acid (TSA, LSA) levels were investigated in calves. For this purpose, 12 Brown Swiss breed calves at 6-8 months of age were used. Prior to the drug administration (on day 0), blood samples were collected, and then Zylexis (2 ml) was applied intramuscularly to the each calve on days 1, 3 and 5. Blood samples were also collected on days 1, 3 and 5 for biochemical analysis. In comparison to day zero samples, Zylexis increased the blood MDA levels on days 1 and 3, while GSH level was decreased on days 1, 3 and 5. NO concentration was significantly increased following Zylexis treatment on all days as compared to those of day zero samples. TSA levels decreased on day 1, while no difference was found on day 3 and 5, as compared to day zero. Moreover, LSA levels remained unchanged on days 1 and 3, while there was an increase on day 5 following Zylexis treatment. In conclusion, Zylexis could alter oxidative stress parameters leading to lipid peroxidation by increasing MDA and reduction of antioxidant status by decreasing GSH levels. Moreover, NO and sialic acid levels in the blood were also changed after drug administration. Considering the possible relationships with immune response, alterations in these parameters require further investigations., Zylexis inaktif paropoxvirus ovis içeren non spesifik paraimmun aktivatörü olup son yıllarda çeşitli infeksiyöz hastalıklara karşı koruyucu olarak kullanılmaktadır.

In this study, after measurement of the blood pressure by an oscillometric method in dogs with chronic renal failure, the effect of Irbesartan, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, on the blood pressure was investigated. In the study, a total of 24 dogs including 12 with chronic renal failure (study group) and 12 healthy ones (control group) were enrolled. Irbesartan was given at a dose of 5 mg/kg once daily for the entire period of study. All clinical and laboratory examinations were performed on days 0 (start of the study), 7, 14 and 28 for the study group and once only in the control group. In the study group, the hemograms revealed normocytic normochromic anemia. With administration of irbesartan, the clinical symptoms were observed to abate slightly while the sistolic/diastolic arterial pressure values of 196/144 at 0, decline to 165/120, 144/98, and 137/90 on the 7th, 14th and 28th days respectively. Also, whereas the blood urea nitrogen, creatinine and protein levels significantly decrease, that of albumin was found to have increased. Comparison of the blood pressures between the study and control groups at the end of the study (28th day) showed no significant difference in the sistolic arterial pressure levels while the diastolic arterial pressure values remained significantly higher. Use of irbesartan was found not to have changed most laboratory findings to any significant degree. It was concluded that in dogs with chronic renal failure where the blood pressure is significantly elevated, treatment of the hypertension with irbesartan, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, is effective, and safe, though at the end of the 28-day treatment period there was a return of the sistolic arterial pressure towards the normal, the diastolic arterial pressure remained slightly elevated above the normal, Bu çalışmada böbrek yetmezliği semptomları görülen köpeklerde tansiyon değerlerinin osilometrik olarak ölçülmesi ve tansiyon değerleri üzerinde bir angiotensin II reseptör antagonisti olan irbesartanın etkinliğinin belirlenmesi amaçlandı.

Anahtar Sözcükler: Angiotensin il antagonist I eri, köpek, renal yetmezlik, sekonder hipertansiyon. 69 SUMMARY Evaluation of Seconder Hypertension by Oscillometric Method in Dogs with Renal Failure Symptoms and Treatment with Angiotensin II Antagonists In the present study, a total of 24 within 12 ill and 12 healty dogs at the age of 6 years and higher ages, from different breeds and sex, with renal failure symptoms were used. Dogs included in this study were evaluated through their clinical controls blood pressure values, haematology, serum biochemistry, venous blood gases and plasma electrolyte values and urinalysis once in healty dogs and at 0, 7th, 14th and 28th days in dogs with renal failure symptoms. Blood pressure values of the dogs were evaluated by suitable cuff size sphygmomanometer working with oscillometric method. Dogs detected to have hypertension received irbesartan at a daily dosage of 5mg/kg once a day inorder to lower the tension during the study period. RBC, WBC, Hb, PCV, MCV, MCHC values from the blood samples taken for haemogram; urea, creatinin, total protein, albumine from the blood samples taken for serum biochemical analysis; pH, p02, PCO2, HCO 3, B.E, Na+, K* levels from the blood samples taken for venous blood gases and plasma electrolyte levels; and proteiuria, density, leucocyte, pH, keton, glucose, bilirubine, urobilinogen, erythrocyt and nitrite levels from the samples taken for urinalysis were detected. Anorexia, vomiting, apathia, polyuria, polydypsia as clinical sings and normocytic normochromic anaemia complete blood count were detected in dogs with chronic renal failure symptoms. Tension values in dogs with chronic renal failure symptoms were detected to be higher than in healty dogs. Irbesatan's efficacy to control tension, the recover in the values of SAP and DAP at the same period, decreasing on the SAP values till the values recorded from the healty dogs despite the DAP values presently at higher values than healty dogs at the end of the trial period were observed. The usage of irbesartan was detected to have no important alteration on blood counts, venous blood gases and plasma electrolyte levels; decrease on the blood serum parameters such as urea and creatinin levels, no alteration on total protein despite elevation on albumine values.70 As a result, it was concluded that; irbesartan, an angiotensin II antagonist, could be used efficiently for the treatment of hypertension in dogs with presenting sing of chronic renal failure, however antihypertensive treatment should be continued for longer durations in order to recover DAP values as in recovery recorded in SAP values, imprevement in clinical appearence and urinalysis despite non-completely imprevement in haematological and biochemical values within the application of antihypertensive and as a sympthomatic therapy could be required additionaly to the antihypertensive therapy. Key Words: Angiotensin II antagonists, dog, renal failure, seconder hypertension. 78

The study comprised of 12 bulls, aged between 18-36 months, determined severe symptoms of Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and 10 clinically healthy bulls of similar age. Serum and saliva total sialic acid (SA), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) and nitric oxide (NO) levels were measured. In this study were determined acute fever, anorexia, vesicular lesions in the mouth and feet of infected animals with consequent excessive salivation, lameness and reduced productivity as clinical signs. Mean serum SA MDA, GSH and NO levels were 503.96±21.43 mg/L, 31.82±3.43 umol/L, 63.43±2.92 mg/dL, and 6.49±0.36 nmol/L in healthy bulls and 862.01 ±17.35 mg/L, 82.49±9.90 umol/L, 24.96±2.32 mg/dL, and 13.89±0.53 nmol/L in FMD cases, respectively. Mean saliva SA, MDA, GSH and NO levels were 75.98±10.25 mg/L, 1.06±0.17 nmol/L, 0.67±0.05 mg/dL, and 1.44±0.14 nmol/L in healthy bulls and 156.49+14.07 mg/L, 1.81+0.15 µmol/L, 0.34±0.03 mg/dL, and 2.44±0.16 nmol/L in FMD cases, respectively. The differences between the two groups were statistically significant (P<0.001 and P<0.01). Mean serum and saliva GSH level was lower in FMD while all other parameters were considerable high. As a result, showing signs of foot and mouth disease in bulls, serum and saliva in sialic acid and oxidative stress parameters are affected very significantly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
