Questions as to how to interpret the past on the bases of incomplete and often conflicting evidence is central to this study. It involves a woman, Amalie Reimer, who lived Linder the Soviet regime, and survived its terror and the brutal Nazi occupation of Ukraine with a young son before becoming a refugee. Other Mennonite refugees in Nazi Germany raised questions regarding her involvement with the Soviet regime and she was cross-examined at a post-war Nuremberg trial while giving evidence on behalf of a Nazi officer accused of war crimes. Eventually Reinier immigrated to Canada where she constructed a new, semi-fictional account of her love life. An attempt to examine contemporary sources and various surviving accounts of her activities do not produce a single, reliable narrative capable of supporting recent accusations made against her by Mennonite historians.
