GENERATION gap , *COMMUNITY involvement , *CITIES & towns , *MUNICIPAL government , *URBAN growth , *COLLECTIVE memory - Abstract
Cities are regarded as spaces of co-production of the social sphere, leaving diverse imprints on the memory and discourse of individuals within society. This study investigates these differences by categorizing them according to generations, focusing on the components of urban identity as perceived, lived, transformed, and interacted with by different generations within the city. The aim is to uncover the type of identity the city offers to various generations and the generation-oriented breakpoints in the production of collective memory. This research is intertwined with themes of urban politics, urban memory, and urban-public space, providing an opportunity to not only observe the generation gap but also to discern the distinct dynamics of the city. It underscores the importance of considering the generation gap in the city's collective accumulation and urban politics. The study draws on data from in-depth interviews with 12 participants, comprising three individuals from each of the X, Y, Z, and Baby Boomer generations, all of whom were born, raised, and currently reside in Eskişehir. Through an examination of factors such as age, upbringing, and life experiences, the research delves into how these elements shape individuals' senses of identity and attachment to the urban environment. Additionally, it explores how generational perspectives influence attitudes towards urban development, cultural identity, and community engagement in Eskişehir. By delving into these aspects, the study aims to provide deeper insights into how generational differences manifest within the context of urban identity in this specific city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Consumer culture, which affects every area from lifestyle to living spaces, and the advertising industry it brings with it, use various channels, inspired by creative disciplines, to cope with the capitalist system with an interaction-oriented approach. In addition to many areas that it has turned into objects of consumption, it also affects architecture and uses it as a tool when necessary. The relationship between advertising and architecture is shaped by historical, cultural and technological contexts, along with the changing needs of society and technological developments, and appears in different methods and strategies. In this context, the methods of using architecture as an advertising medium, which ensures the formation and continuity of urban identity by building a bridge between the past and present of a city, are classified and examined in detail with examples within the scope of this study. Urban identity is one of the most important elements that enable city dwellers to create a sense of connection and belonging. For this reason, it is aimed to raise awareness about eliminating the potential negative effects of the relationship between advertising and architecture in the city for the protection and continuity of urban identity. This paper explores the symbiotic relationship between placemaking and the authenticity of traditional architecture in the realm of city branding, using Surakarta City in Indonesia as a pivotal case study. It posits that the conscious integration of placemaking initiatives with the preservation and celebration of traditional architectural authenticity can significantly amplify any city’s brand identity, rendering it distinct and resonant on the global scale. Surakarta, with its rich cultural heritage and commitment to preserving Javanese architectural motifs, exemplifies how traditional elements can coalesce with contemporary urban development strategies to foster a sense of place and community identity. Through a qualitative analysis of Surakarta’s urban planning and community engagement practices, this study underscores the transformative impact of authentic architectural preservation in placemaking processes. The findings suggest that such an approach not only enhances the aesthetic and cultural landscape of cities but also strengthens their branding, attracting tourism and investment by offering a unique narrative. The paper concludes with strategic recommendations for urban policymakers and planners, advocating for a balanced integration of cultural authenticity and innovative placemaking to achieve sustainable and impactful city branding. This study contributes to the broader discourse on urban development, highlighting the indispensable role of architectural authenticity in crafting compelling city narratives.

The article is dedicated to the topic of the social functioning of the Tatar language – a topic that is not losing relevance in the region – and the ethnic aspects of urban identity. Its use in the communication process in public spaces of non-capital industrial cities of Tatarstan has been examined, based on the materials of mass-scale sociological surveys conducted in Naberezhnye Chelny, Nizhnekamsk, Almetyevsk, and Zelenodolsk. The paper analyses the vision and assessments of the Tatars and Russians, who live in the given cities, regarding the situation developing with the use of the language in administrative, medical, preventive, and educational institutions of settlements, in public transport, on the streets and shopping areas, and at mass cultural events. A conclusion is drawn about the similarity of views of representatives of the identified ethnic groups concerning the importance of its presence in the socio-cultural space of the city, which is the result of the long-term language policy of the republic. On the other hand, discrepancies were discovered in their assessments of the frequency of the Tatar language use in different environments. Among other things, this is due to the differences in its perception by Tatars and Russians. Certain differences in the degree of the Tatar language use between the cities of interest have been noted. It is related to the ethnic composition and, to some extent, the location of the cities. Generally, the language can be heard in the non-capital industrial cities of the republic somewhat more often than in Kazan, with the exception of its satellite city, Zelenodolsk. The conducted study showed a reasonably high degree of the significance of local identity and the continuing relevance of ethnic identity for residents of the cities in question. At the same time, among the factors in the formation of a positive attitude towards the cities, the ethno-cultural factor (the answer option “there is an opportunity to live among representatives of my nationality and communicate in my native language here”) turned out to be important for a little more or less than a tenth of Tatar townspeople.

The article opens the issue dedicated to the ethnosocial problems of the city. Its authors – the compiler and scientific editor of the issue and the editor-in-chief of Historical Ethnology – substantiate an approach to the topic in relation to the ideology of the journal. It is intended to present manifestations of ethnicity in urban settlements in the broad context of the economic, political, social, historical and cultural processes which occur in them. The sections offered to readers reflect this aim and focus on the following aspects: identifying the directions for studying cities, as laid down in the works of ethnosociology classics; the issues of state national policy as applied to them and the influence of various social factors on interethnic engagement; the topic of urban identity in its relationship with ethnic, regional and all-Russian identities, as well as in the context of the impact on the migration mobility of the population; urban ethno-confessional, linguistic and cultural practices that reflect socio-political and economic changes in the post-Soviet space. A brief overview of the articles presents their main ideas and the perspective chosen by each author on the topic. It is concluded that revealing the dialectical relationship between historical, political, economic and ethnosocial development opens up prospects for further research of the city as a social community.

Based on the analysis of the results of qualitative and quantitative sociological research, the article characterises the influence of the center-peripheral stratification of regions on the stability degree of the social identity of the population in the capitals of the republics within the Russian Federation – on the example of Saransk, the administrative center of the Republic of Mordovia, and Izhevsk, the administrative center of the Udmurt Republic. The author evaluates the differences in the central-peripheral self-identification of the elites and the population of the republics, due to differences in the “scale effect” of the resource provision of the republics, as a significant component of the metropolitan identity of the central cities of the republics as “centers for the implementation of other people’s initiatives.” For example, the status of Izhevsk as the largest city is expressed not only in its comparison to medium-sized cities in the Udmurt Republic, but also in competition with large industrial cities in other regions. The contrast example of the negative impact of the scale effect is demonstrated by Mordovia as a relatively small (with a population of less than a million people) and low-resource region with its capital city of Saransk. The formation of a highly polarized population structure in such a region with a single large city in the absence of medium-sized ones does not prevent a negative comparison with the capital cities of more developed and large regions, forming an idea of their own non-competitiveness and periphery in relation to the largest cities, along with a willingness to join the administrative regions they manage, even at the cost of losing their central status. The results of the study explain the phenomenon of blurring the republican identity among the population of the capital cities of some republics and the dysfunction in their social development, which is expressed in their transformation from the “locomotives of modernization” of the republics into the donors of human resources for more developed regions.

The shaping of urban features is profoundl influenced by the underlying urban context, and architectural features and style management are important parts of the protection and cultivation of urban identity. However, in China, oversight in managing the urban context often results in neglect of the cultural values embedded in architectural aspects at the micro level. This, in turn, contributes to the convergence and disorder of urban architectural features and styles. This study builds upon the significance of the urban context and takes the typical Chinese megacity Wuhan as a case study. First, the research systematically outlines the diachronic development of architectural features and styles in Wuhan and meticulously analyses the prevailing problems. Subsequently, an evaluation is conducted on the efficacy of existing architectural features and style management policies and the approval processes for architectural schemes. Finally, the research formulates a comprehensive architectural feature and style management and implementation system that harmonizes Wuhan’s urban cultural heritage and urban identification characteristics. This paper aims to contribute to the refinement of urban identity management and the preservation of architectural diversity to foster a more cohesive and culturally resonant urban environment in Wuhan.

CITIES & towns , *HISTORICITY , *HISTORIC districts , *SUSTAINABLE urban development , *PUBLIC administration , *PUBLIC spaces - Abstract
As organisms that live and interact in groups, humans are social beings and have social needs such as communication, socialization/interaction, participation in groups, and belonging to a community and place. However, as metropolitan cities have become more crowded, society has started to lose its ties with each other. This is the current state of neighborhoods, which are defined as the essence of the city. In today's society, where public life has collapsed, it has become necessary to create common grounds where people can come together for the 'reconstruction of the public person'. Open public events and rituals, which are seen as a community-building tool, give people reasons to come to a place and use it again; they enable them to meet on a common ground and purpose, and play a role in creating a community spirit. In this respect, the study aims to first analyze international guides for public events and then offer suggestions for the content of a conceptual event and organization guide for the Şişli/Kurtuluş district of Istanbul. The study examines events and organizations from a socio-spatial perspective and is important in terms of providing recommendations for the 'Kurtuluş' district, which has been selected as a sample area and is a district with both historical and cultural authenticity. 12. Barriers to ensuring continuity in urban facades identity, legal tools-based analysis: The case of Iran.

- Abstract
With the increase in construction activities under the effects of neo-liberal policies, especially in metropolitan cities, the urban management system faces the critical issue of striving for an urban identity. This study seeks to reveal the awareness of national urban laws and regulations regarding the urban identity concept in the scope of urban facades and silhouettes. On the other hand, the problems experienced and visible in urban silhouettes and identity are indicators of awareness regarding the legislation and the deficiencies and obstacles arising from its implementation. Iran, a developing country with different layers of identity such as culture and religion, is selected for this research. The research focuses on the case of Iran in two essential components. Firstly, it aims to demonstrate the awareness of legal tools in the scope of the necessity for the continuity of urban identity and silhouettes. Then, it reveals the real implementations in urban areas, which show the loss of identity and continuity in the urban facade and silhouette. The most reliable way to reveal this is through urban silhouettes and facade visuals. In this case, the visuals of the buildings built during the Pahlavi period, the buildings from the first years of the revolution, and those being built today as city and architecture interfaces show the lack of identity and the loss of continuity of the facade in their most distinctive features. Since architectural development and urban areas are always subject to social and political development, the era after the Islamic Revolution of Iran, as one of the most important political, social, and cultural events, was chosen to evaluate city facades and identity. In this study, a comprehensive literature review was conducted, in which the legislation, including legal sources, laws, and regulations, as well as historical periods, maps, and visual sources, were examined. The requirements of the legislation and real practices were compared with the support of visuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This study employs the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) framework to explore the integration of landscape plants as green heritage with Lanna urban identity in Chiang Mai Old City, Thailand. The research focuses on 38 Lanna temples, investigating the characteristics and roles of plant materials in these sacred spaces. Through comprehensive ground surveys, GIS mapping, and structured interviews with monks, temple caretakers, and long-term residents, the study documents the types, locations, and uses of native and exotic plants. The findings emphasize the cultural, aesthetic, and ecological significance of heritage trees, such as the Bodhi trees and the Yang tree. These trees are pivotal in maintaining cultural continuity, supporting traditional rituals, and enhancing biodiversity. The study also reveals that while ornamental and edible plants are actively used in rituals and community practices, medicinal and applicable plants are preserved more for their historical value than practical use. This research underscores the necessity of sustainable landscape management, community engagement, and the preservation of ethnobotanical knowledge to mitigate the impacts of urbanization. By integrating green heritage into urban planning, the study provides valuable insights for enhancing the cultural and environmental landscape of Chiang Mai. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article analyses the visual representation of the historical city in digital media as one of the leading ways of urban identity. The author shows that the connection of the image with the city, which is a territorial carrier of visual and symbolic information, and with city digital representation is established and coordinated with the help of an intermediary – digital media, including social networks. On the example of Veliky Novgorod, it is investigated how the image of the city in the media environment shapes the idea of the real urban space for most Internet users. The article identifies the main elements of urban space that emphasize Veliky Novgorod’s status as a historical city: cultural-historical and natural landscape. The visual representation of the historic city emphasizes the uniqueness of a place and expresses local identity, which allows one to distinguish a certain urban space in the endless flow of visual data. At the same time, the author notes that digital media do not display the entire urban space, but only the part that is recorded and then actively disseminated by Internet users. Such incompleteness of the visual representation of the historical city provokes the emergence of socio-cultural distortions: the reproduction of basic visual patterns works to form a stereotypical image that does not reflect the heterogeneity of the real urban environment.

The article analyses public art within the framework of the cultural approach – as a form of visualization of the city’s cultural code. The author examines the variants of public art comprehension existing in the Russian academic discourse and identifies the two most common approaches to the interpretation of art in the public space. According to the first approach, public art is interpreted as “commissioned” art, which is an instrument of the state’s ideological policy, and is therefore evaluated negatively. According to the second approach, public art is understood in a less evaluative and more meaningful way, emphasizing the variability of artistic practices existing within it, their focus on communication with society, participation of residents, and reflection of locally significant meanings. The article emphasizes the commemorative functions of public art and comprehends its role in the actualization of the city’s cultural memory and representation of urban identity. The author explores what historical, cultural, and mythological narratives are depicted on the murals in Veliky Novgorod, created within the framework of the All-Russian Street Art Festival “Pages of History” (2019–2023). The article proposes to categorize Novgorod murals into the following thematic groups: 1) genius loci; 2) historical subjects; 3) myths and legends; 4) cultural heritage; 5) natural objects; 6) modern heroes. Art in Veliky Novgorod’s public spaces, especially located in typical Soviet districts, serves to individualize the urban environment and create new points of attraction for the city dwellers. Murals have become part of new excursion routes that run both through the symbolic city center and the city outskirts. The author argues that the subjects represented on the murals are authentic for Veliky Novgorod, contribute to the formation of local identity, enhance the imagery of the urban environment, and emphasize the uniqueness of the Novgorod cultural landscape.

Urban identity is gaining increasing attention across different research disciplines. However, there is no consensus as to how this concept can be integrated into planning theory, because every discipline has diverse concepts of urban identity, which are often included in planning theory without clarity. For example, environmental psychology literature and the social sciences have defined urban identity as human or social identity, while architecture and urban design characterize it as the urban/city or architectural identity. Therefore, this paper provides a conceptual framework for applying urban identity in planning theory and practice. This paper used the literature review method by synthesizing several relevant and reliable sources, particularly in planning, architecture, environmental psychology, social science, and geography. The result is an explanation of three concepts of urban identity, which are the 'identity of urban,' 'identity in urban,' and 'identity for urban'. The identity of urban helps planners to design functional and characteristic cities. Meanwhile, identity in urban helps planners to achieve the humanist aspect of a city and social justice; and identity for urban helps planners to advance a city's economy and attract investors and tourists. These concepts are interrelated and can be integrated to support the sustainability of cities and their citizens, by achieving harmony between the population's need for orientation and identification, the function and aesthetics of the city, and the city's attractiveness to visitors. - Abstract
This study explores the prioritization of urban identity over national identity in the context of the global city. Scholars have extensively discussed the fragmentation of national identity among individuals in the globalized world, and the relative proliferation of other communal identities, whether more cosmopolitan or place‐based. As globalization gradually erodes the cultural distinctiveness of nation states, cities are revealed as arenas within which inhabitants nurture a particular collective character, which is used as an attractive source of local, communal belonging. Global cities, in particular, are a compelling case to inquire into the interplay between national and urban identity. Due to their relative independence vis‐à‐vis the state, the global city can promote the values shared by inhabitants while constituting significant competition for nation‐based self‐determination and providing a unique source of urban identity that is simultaneously cosmopolitan and place‐based. In this paper we ask whether city‐zens living in highly globalized cities are more likely to prioritize their urban identity over their national identity. Utilizing the GaWC Index of cities’ globalization levels, we analyze the results of an original survey conducted among residents of six European cities: Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Berlin, Utrecht and Glasgow. Our empirical evidence supports the hypothesis that in globalized cities a higher level of globalism accords with a more explicit tendency to prioritize urban identity over national identity. In conclusion, we interpret this evidence as an identities trade‐off that challenges the coexistence of urban and national identities within globalized cities, discussing its implications for future studies of contemporary politics. This study examines the change of urban identity from the socialist period to post-socialist Tirana, evaluating the role of landmarks. The continuously changing city image in the post-socialist period, associated with the construction of new high-rise buildings, is the commencement of this research. The aim is to measure to what extent the change of the landmarks in the post-socialist period impacts Tirana's identity. To achieve this goal, we interviewed Tirana citizens (N = 209) about the socialist/post-socialist period landmarks representing city identity. The methodology includes surveying, mapping, visualization, and clustering. Through a conceptual diagram, the study emphasizes the role of landmarks within the urban identity concept by utilizing their salience-providing features, which are visual, semantic, and locational. The results reveal that the socialist city identity is represented by landmarks that possess a strong image and semantic values. In contrast, post-socialist city identity is represented by new landmarks, which are reported as many and emphasize the rise of experience-oriented landmarks in an entertainment district. The study found a location shift in the landmarks representing Tirana's urban identity from the socialist to post-socialist city. However, in both periods, the majority are on the city's main Boulevard (city spine), which works as a mental skeleton. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Urbans are places that develop according to the lifestyles of societies and natural environmental conditions, that continues the traces of history from the past to the present, and have natural and cultural identity values. However, today, constantly changing urbans with globalization, industrialization, and rapid technological development, become places that resemble each other by losing their identity values. For this reason, revealing all natural and cultural identity component elements is of great importance in terms of ensuring sustainability. The rapid growth tendency of the city of Isparta also causes the destruction or deprivation of identity values. In this study, natural and cultural inventory data were extracted in terms of the sustainability of the identity values of Isparta city and spatial action proposals were developed for the protection of these values by showing these values on digital maps. In this regard, a digital data base of natural and cultural identity values was created using ArcGIS 10.6 software and the current situation was determined. The evaluations of the literature on the protection of the natural and cultural identity values of the city of Isparta were investigated and discussed. In the conclusion section, spatial action suggestions have been developed for conservationuse balance in order to ensure the sustainability of the natural and cultural identity values in the city center of Isparta. The attractiveness of a city is an issue that has received much attention from scholars, regulators and authorities. In terms of a built environment, many attempts have been made to build an attractive city with its own identity through pattern language and form language; however, these languages are developed based on the language of geometry and on how human beings interact with their surrounding environment. Meanwhile, multiple studies on the factors that create motivation to attract visitors to a certain place (e.g. motivation theory) also identified the factors that makes a city attractive, but such studies are still general, incomplete, and only focus on the perspective of tourists. This research builds a system of factors that contributes to urban attractiveness from the perspective of both visitors and residents, through qualitative research methods such as Group Focused Discussion, In-depth Interview and Capture Evaluation Method Survey. The research findings discovered many more factors that affect urban attractiveness and then built nine Conceptual categories of Urban staycation Attraction Factors with 141 factors. The nine main categories are (1) Architectural and Built Environment, (2) Natural, (3) Works of Art and Humanity, (4) Folklore, (5) Community Civilization, (6) Green & Blue Infrastructure, (7) Sense of Place, (8) Services, and (9) Other. Moreover, the research also determined 134 factors that contribute to the attractiveness of Ho Chi Minh City and proposed an additional six important groups of factors that need to be developed to improve urban quality. These findings play an important role in supporting regulators, authorities, urban planners, designers, and tourism and cultural managers to enhance quality of urban life, then create an attractive urban environment for both tourists and local residents.

Introduction: The facade, serving as a crucial link between people and the urban environment, plays a pivotal role in shaping a city's identity. While changes in facades signify societal progress, the disconnect between new buildings and local identities contributes to urban chaos. Despite recent efforts, the persistent visual disturbance in cityscapes raises a critical question. This research aims to analyze theoretical literature, compare findings with legal frameworks, and assess the realization of building facade criteria in new structures in Tehran's Hakimieh neighborhood. Through interviews, the study seeks to uncover reasons for non-compliance. Theoretical Framework: The significance of the urban landscape lies in its identity and connection with perspectives, as explored by Cullen (1971). A visually appealing cityscape enhances urban identity, characterized by building facades, structural heights, and distinctive urban spaces. On a smaller scale, cityscapes encompass elements such as building facade features, material composition, color and texture, light and shadow play, windows, sidewalk features, and urban furnishings (Doyran et al., 2011). The building facade, as a crucial variable, influences the identity aspects of urban landscapes by establishing correlations and structural order within urban environments. Methodology: A comprehensive mixed-method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methodologies, guides this research. The initial phase involves an in-depth analysis of literature and theoretical foundations related to building facade identity components. The field observation stage evaluates buildings constructed within the last three years in Hakimieh neighborhood based on the extracted components. Data collection involves examining approximately 300 buildings, using a 5-point Likert scale to assess the fulfillment or non-fulfillment of facade identity components. Interviews with city officials, builders, and consumers aim to extract nuanced insights from the research findings. Results and Discussion: The degree of fulfillment of the country's official documents' requirements for facade identity components in buildings less than three years old in Hakimieh neighborhood is determined to be 58%. A detailed analysis reveals the highest realization rates in components banning the use of curtained facades (96.4%), unconventional forms (94.7%), and construction of facilities in a visible manner (82.7%). Governance strategies and guidelines, while not fully executed and occasionally conflicting with consumer preferences, have nevertheless influenced nearly 60% of the observed urban landscape. Conclusion: The chaotic state of Hakimieh neighborhood's building facades is not solely the outcome of implementing laws and approvals; various contributing factors and sometimes contradictory approaches have intensified the crisis. Notably, the lack of specific criteria in urban planning and architecture, stemming from a collective and widely accepted perspective, exacerbates the challenges in the existing situation. In conclusion, this critical review sheds light on the intricacies of urban facades, emphasizing the need for a holistic and comprehensive approach to enhance urban identity and mitigate visual disturbances. - Abstract
The article substantiates the importance of documentation as a primary and vital component in the process of systematizing experiences. The practice implemented in “Narrar mi Ciudad” (“Narrate my City”) is taken as an example: an audiovisual literacy project for heritage rediscovery that we developed with adolescents from Extremadura. The planning and recovery of all the written and audiovisual sources obtained during the project form the basis for reconstructing, understanding and learning from the processes experienced. From a qualitative perspective, bibliographic-documentary research, participant observation and synthesis analysis articulate the methodological strategy followed to arrive at the results. The conclusions reaffirm the importance of documentation as an essential process of systematization of experiences that must be carried out in a constant and planned manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many studies acknowledge the significance of assessment frameworks for urban heritage sites in preserving their identities. Due to the pandemic and its impact on heritage sites and visitors, the spatial features and identities of many heritage sites have undergone inevitable shifts, challenging the current assessment frameworks. As numerous urban heritage sites are being revitalised post COVID-19, this study aims to explore how heritage-assessment frameworks can be adapted during the pandemic to sustainably capture the identity of urban heritage sites, particularly from a spatial perspective. Methodologically, the study first examines existing urban-heritage-assessment frameworks, including typologies, embedded spatial attributes, and analysis methods, through a literature review. The research adopts the methodology framework for collecting and assessing evidence to demonstrate the cultural significance outlined in the ‘Guidance on identifying place and object of state-level social value in Victoria’ under Criterion G by the Heritage Council of Victoria. Chinatown, Melbourne, serves as the case study to address the research questions, utilising qualitative data from archival review and field observation. The results highlight the shortcomings of current heritage assessments, particularly in urban contexts, emphasising the overlooked importance of spatial attributes for understanding urban identity. This is exemplified by the exacerbated identity crisis in Chinatown, Melbourne, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the study recommends future heritage assessments incorporate spatial attributes with a thematic approach tailored to diverse cultural-heritage backgrounds in the post-pandemic era. The study acknowledges the sample size and encourages future studies to test the framework with case studies of varied backgrounds.

Historical textures of the cities are unique spaces exhibiting hundreds of years of urban identity and cultural heritage with all their components such as buildings, outdoors and plant materials. Therefore, historical animate materials are as crucial as historical inanimate ones to sustain urban identity. This study aims to reveal the heritage plants representing the urban identity and their temporal change in urbanization as an example of Kahramanmaraş's historical urban texture. The study was carried out in three stages: a) Identifying and mapping traditional public and civil architectures and carrying out spatial investigations on these samples, b) Creating a heritage plants album describing their use, purpose, and composition by identifying the sample areas, c) Determining the temporal changes in the use of the plants representing the urban identity through user researches. According to the findings obtained in the study, Olea europaea L. (81.9%) is the most representative plant in the city among the 29 heritage plants examined. In addition, 32 new exotic species have recently been frequently used in the city's green spaces instead of valuable heritage plants representing the city. Compared to the past, while there was no significant change in the purpose of creating a shaded and cool resting place in terms of intended use, the purpose of enhancing the visual quality of the courtyard/garden increased by 15.32% and obtaining products decreased by 29.8%.

ABSTRACT: Although urban space is a living and continuous space, it is also seen as a tool that reflects all developments in the city. The analysis of space is possible by evaluating the physical, social, historical, cultural, economic, political and administrative factors that vary from past to present. All of the factors are shaped by individüaliste, non-governmental organizations, sectoral components and local government powers, which are the main actors of the space. The identity perception of the place can be analyzed with the integrity extending from the past to the future, and it is possible to read the city correctly and at the same time to be able to read it at the same time by shaping the space in accordance with cultural values, the participation of the people in the administration, city planning principles and planning studies, urbanity awareness, and the fact of belonging to play a major role. The management powers of the space come to the fore in terms of protecting the material-spiritual cultural heritage and supporting the urban texture with participatory approaches. Within the scope of the study, the perception of space-identity of the urban is analyzed by aiming to read the space. The prominent areas in the space, the periods of political-cultural breakdown, the displacement of the focal points in the space with planning studies and the urban perception of the biggest actors of the space were examined. In the study conducted by considering the example of the Pazar district of Rize province, the space that has changed physically from past to present is discussed, and the perception of the space actors in the abstract sense is supported by the survey study. Over the years, physical changes have taken place in the management processes, the first of which was in the 1970s, but with the planning works that have continued until today, it has caused the focal points to change. In line with the decisions taken with the planning studies, it was seen that the city, which was concentrated around the trade center, developed in an east-west direction along the coastal axis. In the survey, starting from the 1980s, when the planning period was active; The perception of space-identity was measured with the people who witnessed the period and the elements that make up the identity of the city were determined.

Culture and art, together with many factors, are the basic components that make up an urban identity. Undoubtedly, one of the important areas of culture and art is theater. In this study, while trying to shed light on the historical course of the art of theater in Erzurum, it was aimed to draw attention to the place and functions of these activites, in line with the the identity of the city and to bring together scattered knowledge and experiences to the literature with a scientific publication. In this study, where a qualitative – descriptive methodology is used, theater activities of the Republican era was discussed, the Erzurum theater experience was reflected through the activities and theater actors, and a chronological flow was established. In this study, where the last century was photographed specifically, attention was drawn to the effects of theater in the socio-cultural and educational areas of the city, and considering the play repertoires of the periods, evaluations and inferences were made regarding the city’s changing audience profile. At this point, it is possible to say that Erzurum was one of the richest cities in terms of theater accumulation in the country, thanks to the continuation of theater activities of both private and amateur theater groups as well as official and semi-official theater institutions for over a century. Plays staged at İbret Evi, which is the first modern establishment of a theater group founded by Kazım Karabekir, and theatrical performances held at the Community Center (Halkevi) established in the 1930’s continued intensely until the 1980’s in the form of various tours and consecutive performances as private amateur theatre groups along with the Erzurum State Theatre performances all established the foundation and basic building blocks for accumulation of theatre in Erzurum. They also constitute the basic dynamics of urban memory that connects the past with the present.

Despite the inherently dynamic nature of the urban identity concept and its interconnections among various academic disciplines, including philosophy, psychology, environmental studies, and urbanism, the term is employed in distinct contexts within each field. This divergence in usage has resulted in ambiguity and a lack of clarity regarding the meaning of urban identity. This research aims to scrutinize the existing literature on identity and urban identity across various scientific disciplines, reaching a better understanding of the term. As a methodological approach, we undertake a systematic analysis of the theoretical debate to identify and comprehend the descriptive and analytical perspectives on identity and urban identity concepts, the evaluation processes of urban identity, and the identification of primary debates, issues, and related gaps. The findings of this research will facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of the urban identity concept and its identification, thereby contributing to the evolution of academic research on urban identity.

The city of Ankara has hosted many civilizations since prehistoric times and has many historical buildings from various periods. The Hacı Bayram Veli Mosque, built by Hacı Bayram Veli, the founder of the Bayramiyye (Bayramilik) Sect, is located in Altındağ District, Ulus historical city center, next to the Temple of Augustus. This study starts with a literature and archive review on the city's identity and Hacı Bayram Veli Mosque. It includes the results of a survey study prepared to determine the place of the mosque and its surroundings in the urban identity of Ankara. The survey results were analyzed, and the results were interpreted in terms of Ankara's urban identity. The study draws attention to the Hacı Bayram Veli Mosque and its surroundings, an important focal point for Ankara and one of the indispensable points of the historical city center of Ankara. Although there are various art and architectural history studies on the Hacı Bayram Veli Mosque, there are almost no studies regarding urban identity. In this context, the study is important and will fill a gap in this area.

The study of the relationship between biotic elements and communities within the literature of urban identity in the context of urban planning and design is presently constrained. This research aimed to elucidate the role of biotic elements in community identity through an investigation into the case of bats in the city center. Various data collection methods were employed, encompassing documentation (including the scrutiny of texts and images), observation, and interviews. The research concentrated on the city of Watansoppeng, Indonesia, conducting semi-informal interviews with purposively selected residents, such as cultural leaders, academics, and officials from pertinent institutions. The research variables comprised history, collective memory, and culture, and the analysis adopted a biocultural approach. Digital qualitative analysis was conducted using Atlas.ti 23 software. The findings underscored the significant role played by bats in shaping community identity in Watansoppeng. These nocturnal creatures contribute substantially to the development of the community's historical narrative across generations, including the emergence of myths associating them with signaling impending disasters in the city. Moreover, bats function as custodians of the collective memory of the community, serving as reminders of the glory of the Soppeng Kingdom and the greatness of their First King. The interaction between bats and the community is also reflected in various cultural expressions, spanning language and linguistics, literature, cultural materials, science and technology, economic relations, social interactions, and belief systems.

This research addresses the neglect of sensory features, specifically the soundscape, in studies focused on preserving historic areas. The aim was to contribute to soundscape research by examining the effect of sound on the perception of urban historical places and the impact of the "renewal and transformation" process on audio-visual experiences. This study focused on the historical Erbil Citadel as a case study area, known for its extensive cultural history. Sound sources in the region were identified, recorded, and analyzed using software to calculate the Sound Pressure Level (SPL). The sound sources assessed as a result of the analysis were examined using Schafer's sound characteristics. In this study, data was collected through a soundwalk study in the historical Erbil Citadel, and its surroundings were identified. The characteristics of the sounds were determined from the sound recordings, enabling the distinction of sounds contributing to the city's identity. A route was established in its current state, and it was identified which regional precautions should be taken to preserve the sound identity of the city.

The research adopts the methodology framework for collecting and assessing evidence to demonstrate the cultural significance outlined in the 'Guidance on identifying place and object of state-level social value in Victoria' under Criterion G by the Heritage Council of Victoria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
