This study reports comprehensive observations for the G5-level geomagnetic storm that occurred from May 10 to 12, 2024, the most intense event since the 2003 Halloween storm. The storm was triggered by a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) originating from the merging of two active regions 13664/13668, which formed a large and complex photospheric magnetic configuration and produced X-class flares in early May 2024. Among the events, the most significant CME, driven by an X2.2 flare on May 9, caught up with and merged with a preceding slower CME associated with an X-class flare on May 8. These combined CMEs reached 1 AU simultaneously, resulting in an extreme geomagnetic storm. Geostationary satellite observations revealed changes in Earth’s magnetosphere due to solar wind impacts, increased fluxes of high-energy particles, and periodic magnetic field fluctuations accompanied by particle injections. Extreme geomagnetic storms resulting from the interaction of the solar wind with the Earth’s magnetosphere caused significant energy influx into Earth’s upper atmosphere over the polar regions, leading to thermospheric heating and changes in the global atmospheric composition and ionosphere. As part of this global disturbance, significant disruptions were also observed in the East Asian sector, including the Korean Peninsula. Ground-based observations show strong negative storm effects in the ionosphere, which are associated with thermospheric heating and resulting in decreases in the oxygen-to-nitrogen ratio (O/N2) in high-latitude regions. Global responses of storm-time prompt penetration electric fields were also observed from magnetometers over the East-Asian longitudinal sector. We also briefly report storm-time responses of aurora and cosmic rays using all-sky cameras and neutron monitors operated by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). The extensive observations of the G5-level storm offer crucial insights into Sun-Earth interactions during extreme space weather events and may help establish better preparation for future space weather challenges.

Abstract Although rare genetic conditions are mostly caused by DNA sequence alterations that functionally disrupt individual genes, large-scale studies using genome sequencing have started to unmask additional complexity. Understanding how combinations of variants in different genes shape human phenotypes is expected to provide important insights into the clinical and genetic heterogeneity of rare disorders. Here, we use albinism, an archetypal rare condition associated with hypopigmentation, as an exemplar for the study of genetic interactions. We analyse data from the Genomics England 100,000 Genomes Project alongside a cohort of 1120 individuals with albinism, and investigate the effect of dual heterozygosity for the combination of two established albinism-related variants: TYR:c.1205 G > A (p.Arg402Gln) [rs1126809] and OCA2:c.1327 G > A (p.Val443Ile) [rs74653330]. As each of these changes alone is insufficient to cause disease when present in the heterozygous state, we sought evidence of synergistic effects. We show that, when both variants are present, the probability of receiving a diagnosis of albinism is significantly increased (odds ratio 12.8; 95% confidence interval 6.0 – 24.7; p-value 2.1 ×10−8). Further analyses in an independent cohort, the UK Biobank, support this finding and highlight that heterozygosity for the TYR:c.1205 G > A and OCA2:c.1327 G > A variant combination is associated with statistically significant alterations in visual acuity and central retinal thickness (traits that are considered albinism endophenotypes). The approach discussed in this report opens up new avenues for the investigation of oligogenic patterns in apparently Mendelian disorders.

Abstract Background Many studies have been reported on tracheostomy to prevent upper airway obstruction after surgery. Among these, the scoring system proposed by Cameron et al. quantifies various factors that influence postoperative respiratory failure. This system provides a basis for surgeons to decide whether to perform an elective tracheostomy. In this study, the authors applied the Cameron scoring system retrospectively to patients undergoing severe oral cancer surgery to reevaluate the indications for elective tracheostomy and to investigate its clinical efficacy in airway management. In this study, a sample of 20 patients who underwent oral cancer surgery was selected and divided into two groups: 10 underwent tracheostomy and 10 did not. The Cameron scoring scores for each patient were extracted, to verify whether elective tracheostomy was performed in accordance with the threshold scores. Differences in scores and significant clinical impact factors between the two groups were analyzed and compared. Result The 10 patients who underwent tracheostomy had an average Cameron score of 6.4, all scoring above the recommended threshold of 5 for tracheostomy. For the 10 patients who did not undergo tracheostomy, the average score was 2.5, with 8 out of these 10 patients scoring below 5. Significant clinical impact factors observed included the location and size of the tumor, the performance of mandibulectomy and neck dissection, and the type of reconstruction surgery. Conclusion In planning surgery for oral cancer patients, it is essential to consider the use of elective tracheostomy based on preoperative assessment of the risk of postoperative airway obstruction using tools like the Cameron scoring system, and patients’ condition. Research confirms that elective tracheostomy effectively enhances airway management in patients with severe oral cancer.

Abstract Background For the surgical treatment of oral cancer, it is sometimes necessary to expand intraoral access within the oral cavity. The “swing approach” that involves lip splitting of the mandible and temporary mandibular osteotomy and the “visor approach” that does not split the lower lip and mandible are mainly used. This study analyzed postoperative outcomes such as complications, recurrence rate, and survival rate by these two approaches. The goal of this study is to evaluate the surgical outcomes of patients using these two approaches, to propose effective perioperative management for oral cancer surgery, and to compare the prognosis of oral cancer patients. Materials and methods From 2005 to 2020, 29 patients who underwent surgery at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Pusan National University Dental Hospital for oral cancer lesions occurred in the mandible, floor of mouth, and tongue were selected for the study. Based on the surgical approach used, a chart review was conducted on various prognostic clinical factors such as the patients’ sex and age, primary site, TNM stage, histopathologic grade, recurrence and metastasis, postoperative survival rate, adjuvant chemo-radiation therapy, satisfaction with aesthetics/function/swallowing, length of hospital stay, tracheostomy and its duration, and neck dissection and its type. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 25.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL) through Fisher’s exact t-test. Result There was no statistically significant difference between two groups in terms of clinical and pathological findings, such as survival rate, the need for adjuvant therapies, and the local recurrence rate. Although better outcomes were observed in terms of function, aesthetics, and postoperative complications in the group with visor approach, there was still no statistically significant difference between two groups. However, the duration of hospital stay was shorter in the visor approach group. Conclusion There was no statistically significant difference in clinical prognostic factors between the swing approach and the visor approach. Therefore, when choosing between the two approaches for the ablation of oral cancer, it is considered to select the surgical priority approach that can be easy access based on the size and location of the lesion. The visor approach had advantages of aesthetics and healing period.

Abstract Background Sensory changes due to aging or disease can impact brain tissue. This study aims to investigate the link between glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness, and alterations in brain connections. Methods We analyzed diffusion MRI measurements of white matter tissue in a large group, consisting of 905 glaucoma patients (aged 49-80) and 5292 healthy individuals (aged 45-80) from the UK Biobank. Confounds due to group differences were mitigated by matching a sub-sample of controls to glaucoma subjects. We compared classification of glaucoma using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) focusing on the optic radiations, which are the primary visual connection to the cortex, against those analyzing non-visual brain connections. As a control, we evaluated the performance of regularized linear regression models. Results We showed that CNNs using information from the optic radiations exhibited higher accuracy in classifying subjects with glaucoma when contrasted with CNNs relying on information from non-visual brain connections. Regularized linear regression models were also tested, and showed significantly weaker classification performance. Additionally, the CNN was unable to generalize to the classification of age-group or of age-related macular degeneration. Conclusions Our findings indicate a distinct and potentially non-linear signature of glaucoma in the tissue properties of optic radiations. This study enhances our understanding of how glaucoma affects brain tissue and opens avenues for further research into how diseases that affect sensory input may also affect brain aging.

Ammonia electrosynthesis is the most sustainable way to produce carbon-free hydrogen carriers, which would pave the way for the foreseen hydrogen economy and carbon neutralization as it has the potential to replace the conventional Haber-Bosch process. The electrocatalytic production of ammonia, which renewable energy resources could drive, reduces the carbon footprint contribution to fossil fuel consumption. Moreover, ammonia electrosynthesis also paves the way for recycling industrial/chemical wastewater and NO emissions. Hence, the advancement of electrocatalytic ammonia synthesis techniques is highly mandated for a greener future. This review consolidates the recent research trends associated with carbon-based electrocatalysts, which could elevate this viable technology with cost-effectiveness.

Abstract Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is a sustainable alternative to the Haber‒Bosch process for ammonia (NH3) production. However, the significant uphill energy in the multistep NRR pathway is a bottleneck for favorable serial reactions. To overcome this challenge, we designed a vanadium oxide/nitride (V2O3/VN) hybrid electrocatalyst in which V2O3 and VN coexist coherently at the heterogeneous interface. Since single‐phase V2O3 and VN exhibit different surface catalytic kinetics for NRR, the V2O3/VN hybrid electrocatalyst can provide alternating reaction pathways, selecting a lower energy pathway for each material in the serial NRR pathway. As a result, the ammonia yield of the V2O3/VN hybrid electrocatalyst was 219.6 µg h−1 cm−2, and the Faradaic efficiency was 18.9%, which is much higher than that of single‐phase VN, V2O3, and VNxOy solid solution catalysts without heterointerfaces. Density functional theory calculations confirmed that the composition of these hybrid electrocatalysts allows NRR to proceed from a multistep reduction reaction to a low‐energy reaction pathway through the migration and adsorption of intermediate species. Therefore, the design of metal oxide/nitride hybrids with coherent heterointerfaces provides a novel strategy for synthesizing highly efficient electrochemical catalysts that induce steps favorable for the efficient low‐energy progression of NRR.

Abstract Very preterm children, born before 32 weeks of gestation, are at risk for impaired cognitive function, mediated by several risk factors. Cognitive impairment can be measured by various neurodevelopmental assessments and is closely associated with structural alterations of brain morphometry, such as cortical thickness. However, the association between structural alterations and high-order cognitive function remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the neurodevelopmental associations between brain structural changes and cognitive abilities in very preterm and full-term children. Cortical thickness was assessed in 37 very preterm and 24 full-term children aged 6 years. Cortical thickness analysis of structural T1-weighted images was performed using Advanced Normalization Tools. Associations between cortical thickness and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children were evaluated by regression analysis based on ordinary least square estimation. Compared with full-term children, very preterm children showed significant differences in cortical thickness, variously associated with cognitive abilities in several brain regions. Perceptual reasoning indices were broadly correlated with cortical thickness in very preterm and full-term children. These findings provide important insights into neurodevelopment and its association with cortical thickness, which may serve as a biomarker in predictive models for neurodevelopmental diagnosis of high-order cognitive function.

Abstract 2D materials are regarded as promising electrocatalysts for water splitting because of their advances in providing ample active sites and improving electrochemical reaction kinetics. 2D MoSe2 has a greater intrinsic electrical conductivity and lower Gibbs free energy for reactant adsorption. However, there is still room for improvement in the electrocatalytic performance of MoSe2 for high‐performance electrochemical water splitting devices. Herein, the in situ preparation of heterostructure made of covalently bonded MoSe2 and rGO is reported. The obtained electrocatalyst contains the aggregated 3D structured MoSe2 over rGO, which is covalently bonded together with more edge sites. The active edge sites of MoSe2/rGO are dynamically involved in the electrocatalytic activity while facilitating electron transfer. Hence, the MoSe2/rGO heterostructure requires a low cell voltage of 1.64 V to reach 100 mA cm−2 in water splitting with high reaction kinetics. The aggregated MoSe2 over rGO with more edge sites exposed by the 3D structure of MoSe2 and the interfacial covalent bond in between them provides a favorable electronic structure for the HER and OER with low overpotentials and high current densities and enhances the stability of the electrocatalyst. This work presents an attractive and cost‐effective electrocatalyst suitable for industrial‐scale hydrogen fuel production.

AbstractShiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes) hold high nutritional and medicinal value as they contain an abundance of health-promoting compounds. However, the effect of long-term postharvest storage on the variation in the levels of health-promoting compounds has not been extensively studied. In this study, we investigated the changes in the levels of phenolic compounds, antioxidants, eritadenine, and ergothioneine in shiitake mushrooms stored at three different temperatures (1, 3, and 5 °C) for 4 weeks. Compared to mushrooms stored at lower temperatures, those stored at 5 °C exhibited a higher level of total phenolics in their pileus after 2 weeks of storage; however, storage at 5 °C also increased the deterioration of the fruiting body of these mushrooms. In mushrooms stored at all temperatures, the eritadenine content in the pilei tended to increase up to 2 weeks of storage. In contrast, the ergothioneine content in the pileus decreased during storage, with a significantly lower level detected in mushrooms stored at 5 °C for 4 weeks. Together, these results suggest that the mechanisms underlying the accumulation of phenolics and eritadenine may be related to mushroom deterioration during storage. Our findings indicate that the levels of health-promoting compounds in shiitake mushrooms are influenced by storage temperature, suggesting the potential to control adjustments of specific bioactive compounds by regulating storage conditions.

Abstract Background Amplification of the 3q region has been identified as a useful biomarker for the diagnosis and treatment of squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC). This region contains genes such as PIK3CA and YEATS2, which have been linked to the prognosis of SqCC. Methods The NanoString nCounter assay is a powerful tool for identifying genetic alterations that affect the progression and prognosis of SqCC. The NanoString nCounter assay was used to identify a subgroup of patients with gene level gain in the 3q region. Results Gene level gain in the 3q region was more frequent in SqCC than in adenocarcinoma. We found that genes such as PIK3CA and YEATS2 in the 3q region were associated with the prognosis of SqCC. Therefore, identifying a subgroup of patients with gene level gain in the 3q region using the NanoString nCounter assay can aid in selecting appropriate treatment options and improving prognostic predictions for SqCC patients. Conclusion Amplification of the 3q region in SqCC of lung cancer is a useful biomarker for diagnosis and treatment. The NanoString nCounter assay is a powerful tool for identifying specific genetic alterations that affect the progression and prognosis of SqCC. Our study highlights the importance 3q amplification and its associated genes in lung cancer.

A cold storage system is useful for maintaining the quality of hardy kiwifruit. However, extended cold storage periods inevitably result in cold stress, leading to lower fruit marketability; the severity of chilling injury depends on fruit types and cultivars. In this study, the impact of cold storage conditions on the physicochemical properties and antioxidant capacity of two phenotypically different hardy kiwifruit cultivars—‘Cheongsan’ (large type) and ‘Daebo’ (small type)—stored at low (L; 3 °C, relative humidity [RH]; 85–90%) and moderate-low (ML; 5 °C, RH; 85–90%) temperatures was determined. Significant differences in fruit firmness and titratable acidity between treatments L and ML were observed in both cultivars during the experimental storage period. Meanwhile, the browning and pitting rates of the ‘Cheongsan’ fruits in treatment L increased for 8 weeks compared with those of the ‘Daebo’ fruits in treatments L and ML; nonetheless, fruit decay was observed in the ‘Daebo’ fruits in treatment ML after 6 weeks. The total chlorophyll, carotenoid, flavonoid, and ascorbic acid concentrations as well as the antioxidant activities of both the cultivars significantly differed between treatments L and ML. After 2 weeks of storage, the ‘Cheongsan’ fruits in treatment L had lower antioxidant activities and ascorbic acid content than those in treatment ML. These results demonstrate that the quality attributes and antioxidant activity of hardy kiwifruit are influenced by the low-temperature storage conditions and the specific kiwifruit cultivars. Our findings suggest that optimal cold storage conditions, specific to each hardy kiwifruit cultivar, promise to maintain fruit quality, including their health-promoting compounds, during long-term storage.

Abstract Lead‐acid batteries (LABs) are widely used as a power source in many applications due to their affordability, safety, and recyclability. However, as the demand for better electrochemical energy storage increases in various fields, there is a growing need for more advanced battery technologies. To meet this need, the application of LABs in hybrid electric vehicles and renewable energy storage has been explored, and the development of lead–carbon batteries (LCBs) has garnered significant attention as a promising solution. LCBs incorporate carbon materials in the negative electrode, successfully addressing the negative irreversible sulfation issue that plagues traditional LABs. Composite material additives and Pb–C composite electrodes have also gained popularity as effective ways to enhance negative electrode performance. This review article focuses on the role of carbon additives in the negative electrode of LCBs and discusses potential future additives that may be incorporated into the development of LCBs. Overall, this article provides insights into the potential of LCBs to offer more efficient and reliable energy storage.

Abstract Efficient and cost‐effective electrocatalysts that can operate across a wide range of pH conditions are essential for green hydrogen production. Inspired by biological systems, Fe7S8 nanoparticles incorporated on polydopamine matrix electrocatalyst were synthesized by co‐precipitation and annealing process. The resulting Fe7S8/C electrocatalyst possesses a three‐dimensional structure and exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen production across various pH conditions. Notably, the Fe7S8/C electrocatalyst demonstrates exceptional activity, achieving low overpotentials of 90.6, 45.9, and 107.4 mV in acidic, neutral, and alkaline environments, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals that Fe7S8/C exhibits the lowest charge transfer resistance under neutral conditions, indicating an improved proton‐coupled electron transfer process. Continuous‐wave electron paramagnetic resonance results confirm a change in the valence state of Fe from 3+ to 1+ during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). These findings closely resemble the behavior of natural [FeFe]‐hydrogenase, known for its superior hydrogen production in neutral conditions. The remarkable performance of our Fe7S8/C electrocatalyst opens up new possibilities for utilizing bioinspired materials as catalysts for the HER.

IntroductionIn clinical research on pituitary disorders, pituitary gland (PG) segmentation plays a pivotal role, which impacts the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as endocrine dysfunctions and visual impairments. Manual segmentation, which is the traditional method, is tedious and susceptible to inter-observer differences. Thus, this study introduces an automated solution, utilizing deep learning, for PG segmentation from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).MethodsA total of 153 university students were enrolled, and their MRI images were used to build a training dataset and ground truth data through manual segmentation of the PGs. A model was trained employing data augmentation and a three-dimensional U-Net architecture with a five-fold cross-validation. A predefined field of view was applied to highlight the PG region to optimize memory usage. The model’s performance was tested on an independent dataset. The model’s performance was tested on an independent dataset for evaluating accuracy, precision, recall, and an F1 score.Results and discussionThe model achieved a training accuracy, precision, recall, and an F1 score of 92.7%, 0.87, 0.91, and 0.89, respectively. Moreover, the study explored the relationship between PG morphology and age using the model. The results indicated a significant association between PG volume and midsagittal area with age. These findings suggest that a precise volumetric PG analysis through an automated segmentation can greatly enhance diagnostic accuracy and surveillance of pituitary disorders.

Background and Rationale: Currently, there is no medication to prevent post-stroke cognitive decline. Previous studies have suggested that cilostazol may prevent cognitive decline in stroke through mechanisms such as increasing cerebral blood flow and reducing amyloid beta accumulation. We aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of cilostazol, compared to aspirin or clopidogrel, in preventing cognitive decline in elderly patients with ischemic stroke at high risk of dementia. Study Design: We have designed a multicenter registry-based randomized controlled trial (RRCT), with an open-label blinded endpoint (PROBE) approach. We will recruit patients enrolled in the CRCS-K stroke registry who are at least three months from the onset of ischemic stroke and who meet the following conditions that suggest a high risk of developing dementia: age ≥ 75 years, age between 65 and 74 years and one of the following conditions: [diabetes mellitus, confluent white matter hyperintensities (Fazekas grade 3), medial temporal atrophy (Scheltens visual grade≥ 3), multiple cerebral microbleeds (≥ 5), multiple lacunes (> 5), APOE e4 allele]. Participants will be randomly allocated to either cilostazol (200 mg daily) or a control group receiving aspirin (100–300 mg daily) or clopidogrel (75 mg daily). Cognitive assessments will be performed at baseline, end of follow-up (up to 60 months), and whenever cognitive decline is reported by participants or caregivers. The study will be carried out across 17 centers in South Korea, with a projected enrollment of 2,362 patients. Study outcomes: Our primary outcome measure is the time from baseline to prespecified cognitive decline, defined as a decrease of 3 or more points on the MMSE and an increase of 1.5 or more points on the CDR-SOB. Secondary endpoints encompass changes in MMSE, CDR-SOB, and MoCA scores from baseline to final assessment, incident dementia, and a composite of recurrent stroke, acute myocardial infarction, and all-cause mortality. As a primary safety assessment, we will analyze the occurrence of major bleeding events. Discussion: We anticipate that the RRCT approach will enable efficient screening of a large cohort of elderly stroke patients at high risk of dementia while ensuring prolonged follow-up at a reasonable cost.

Evaluations of treatment efficacy in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic disease that results in progressive muscle wasting, require an understanding of the 'meaningfulness' of changes in functional measures. We estimated the minimal detectable change (MDC) for selected motor function measures in ambulatory DMD, i.e., the minimal degree of measured change needed to be confident that true underlying change has occurred rather than transient variation or measurement error. MDC estimates were compared across multiple data sources, representing >1000 DMD patients in clinical trials and real-world clinical practice settings. Included patients were ambulatory, aged ≥4 to 80% confidence in true change were 2.8 units for the North Star Ambulatory Assessment (NSAA) total score, 1.3 seconds for the 4-stair climb (4SC) completion time, 0.36 stairs/second for 4SC velocity and 36.3 meters for the 6-minute walk distance (6MWD). MDC estimates were similar across clinical trial and real-world data sources, and tended to be slightly larger than MCIDs for these measures. The identified thresholds can be used to inform endpoint definitions, or as benchmarks for monitoring individual changes in motor function in ambulatory DMD.

Abstract Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy and a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Primary open-angle glaucoma is the most common form, and yet the etiology of this multifactorial disease is poorly understood. We aimed to identify plasma metabolites associated with the risk of developing POAG in a case-control study (599 cases and 599 matched controls) nested within the Nurses’ Health Studies, and Health Professionals’ Follow-Up Study. Plasma metabolites were measured with LC-MS/MS at the Broad Institute (Cambridge, MA, USA); 369 metabolites from 18 metabolite classes passed quality control analyses. For comparison, in a cross-sectional study in the UK Biobank, 168 metabolites were measured in plasma samples from 2,238 prevalent glaucoma cases and 44,723 controls using NMR spectroscopy (Nightingale, Finland; version 2020). Here we show higher levels of diglycerides and triglycerides are adversely associated with glaucoma in all four cohorts, suggesting that they play an important role in glaucoma pathogenesis.

ABSTRACTIn this study, Al2O3-based coatings with varying TiO2 contents (0, 3, 13, and 40%) were fabricated using atmospheric plasma spraying technique. To compare the superiority of the samples, their mechanical (Vickers hardness and adhesion strength) and thermal properties (thermal conductivity and thermal shock resistance) were characterized. As observed, Al2O3-40%TiO2 (A-40T) coating exhibited relatively inferior mechanical properties but superior thermal insulation and thermal shock resistance at 600°C. According to the microstructure and phase analysis, this finding is attributed to the special phase, Al2TiO5, and preexisting microcracks inside the coating. Thus, A-40T manifested excellent characteristics for thermal insulation application compared with pure Al2O3 and low-TiO2 content coatings.

We propose an overall procedure for measuring and unfolding fast neutron spectra using a trans-stilbene scintillation detector. Detector characterization was described, including the information on energy calibration, detector resolution, and nonproportionality response. The digital charge comparison method was used for the investigation of neutron-gamma Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD). A pair of values of 600 ns pulse width and 24 ns delay time was found as the optimized conditions for PSD. A fitting technique was introduced to increase the trans-stilbene Proton Response Function (PRF) by 28% based on comparison of the simulated and experimental electron-equivalent distributions by the Cf-252 source. The detector response matrix was constructed by Monte-Carlo simulation and the spectrum unfolding was implemented using the iterative Bayesian method. The unfolding of simulated and measured spectra of Cf-252 and AmBe neutron sources indicates reliable, stable and no-bias results. The unfolding technique was also validated by the measured cosmic-ray induced neutron flux. Our approach is promising for fast neutron detection and spectroscopy.

Securing the Internet of Things (IoT) against cyber threats is a formidable challenge, and Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) play a critical role in this effort. However, the lack of transparent explanations for IDS decisions remains a significant concern. In response, we introduce a novel approach that leverages a blending model for attack classification and integrates counterfactual and Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME) techniques to enhance explanations. To assess the effectiveness of our approach, we conducted experiments using the recently introduced CICIoT2023 and IoTID20 datasets. These datasets are real-time and large-scale benchmark datasets for IoT environment attacks, offering a realistic and challenging scenario that captures the intricacies of intrusion detection in dynamic IoT environments. Our experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in attack detection accuracy compared to conventional IDS methods. Furthermore, our proposed approach provides clear and interpretable insights into the factors influencing classification decisions, empowering users to make informed security choices. Integrating blending model classification and explanation techniques enhances the security and reliability of IoT systems. Therefore, this work represents a significant advancement in IoT intrusion detection, offering a robust and transparent defense against large-scale cyber-attacks of IoT environment data.

Abstract The aim of UK-REACH (“The United Kingdom Research study into Ethnicity And COVID-19 outcomes in Healthcare workers”) is to understand if, how, and why healthcare workers (HCWs) in the United Kingdom (UK) from ethnic minority groups are at increased risk of poor outcomes from COVID-19. In this article, we present findings from the ethical and legal stream of the study, which undertook qualitative research seeking to understand and address legal, ethical, and social acceptability issues around data protection, privacy, and information governance associated with the linkage of HCWs’ registration data and healthcare data. We interviewed 22 key opinion leaders in healthcare and health research from across the UK in two-to-one semi-structured interviews. Transcripts were coded using qualitative thematic analysis. Participants told us that a significant aspect of Big Data research in public health is varying drivers of mistrust—of the research itself, research staff and funders, and broader concerns of mistrust within participant communities, particularly in the context of COVID-19 and those situated in more marginalised community settings. However, despite the challenges, participants also identified ways in which legally compliant and ethically informed approaches to research can be crafted to mitigate or overcome mistrust and establish greater confidence in Big Data public health research. Overall, our research indicates that a “Big Data Ethics by Design” approach to research in this area can help assure (1) that meaningful community and participant engagement is taking place and that extant challenges are addressed, and (2) that any new challenges or hitherto unknown unknowns can be rapidly and properly considered to ensure potential (but material) harms are identified and minimised where necessary. Our findings indicate such an approach, in turn, will help drive better scientific breakthroughs that translate into medical innovations and effective public health interventions, which benefit the publics studied, including those who are often marginalised in research.

Abstract Among the various methods, Non Thermal Plasma (NTP) has been recently introduced and is being studied to recover the damaged nerve. In the recent years, several studies have suggested that NTP accelerates nerve cell regeneration, but the mechanism remains unknown. This study evaluated the effect of NTP on neuronal proliferation in SH-SY5Y (Human neuroblastoma cells) cells differentiated by retinoic acid (RA) and investigated the mechanism by which NTP promotes cell proliferation. We analyzed the morphology of differentiated SH-SY5Y cells, and performed western blot analysis and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Immunofluorescence analysis was performed in an in vivo study by categorizing Wistar A rats into three groups: non-nerve damage (Non-ND), nerve damage (ND), and nerve damage + NTP treatment (ND + NTP). The cell morphology analysis revealed that the number of cells increased and axonal elongation progressed after NTP treatment. In addition, western blots indicated that tau expression increased significantly after NTP treatment. The RT-PCR results revealed that the expression of tau, wnt3a, and β-catenin increased after NTP treatment. The in vivo immunofluorescence assay showed that NTP increased the markers for tau and S100B while regulating the over-expression of MAP2 and GAP43. NTP treatment accelerated cell proliferation and regeneration of damaged neurons in differentiated SH-SY5Y cells. These results establish the fact of NTP as a noninvasive and effective treatment for nerve injury.

Abstract A versatile use of a sulfur self‐doped biochar derived from Camellia japonica (camellia) flowers is demonstrated as a multifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting and a supercapacitor. The native sulfur content in the camellia flower facilitates in situ self‐doping of sulfur, which highly activates the camellia‐driven biochar (SA‐Came) as a multifunctional catalyst with the enhanced electron‐transfer ability and long‐term durability. For water splitting, an SA‐Came‐based electrode is highly stable and shows reaction activities in both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, with overpotentials of 154 and 362 mV at 10 mA cm−2, respectively. For supercapacitors, SA‐Came achieves a specific capacitance of 125.42 F g−1 at 2 A g−1 and high cyclic stability in a three‐electrode system in a 1 M KOH electrolyte. It demonstrated a high energy density of 34.54 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 1600 W kg−1 as a symmetric hybrid supercapacitor device with a wide working potential range of 0–1.6 V.

Anoctamin 1 (ANO1), a drug target for various cancers, including prostate and oral cancers, is an intracellular calcium-activated chloride ion channel that plays various physiopathological roles, especially in the induction of cancer growth and metastasis. In this study, we tested a novel compound isolated from Schisandra sphenanthera, known as schisandrathera D, for its inhibitory effect on ANO1. Schisandrathera D dose-dependently suppressed the ANO1 activation-mediated decrease in fluorescence of yellow fluorescent protein; however, it did not affect the adenosine triphosphate-induced increase in the intracellular calcium concentration or forskolin-induced cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator activity. Specifically, schisandrathera D gradually decreased the levels of ANO1 protein and significantly reduced the cell viability in ANO1-expressing cells when compared to those in ANO1-knockout cells. These effects could be attributed to the fact that schisandrathera D displayed better binding capacity to ANO1 protein than the previously known ANO1 inhibitor, Ani9. Finally, schisandrathera D increased the levels of caspase-3 and cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase 1, thereby indicating that its anticancer effect is mediated through apoptosis. Thus, this study highlights that schisandrathera D, which reduces ANO1 protein levels, has apoptosis-mediated anticancer effects in prostate and oral cancers, and thus, can be further developed into an anticancer agent.

The weight reduction of the bipolar plate (BP) is essential for commercializing unitized regenerative fuel cells (URFCs). In order to lighten the weight of the bipolar plate, we have used Pb/C composite powder as a cost-effective primary material, which is a mixture of low-density graphite and lead. Further, varied lead-carbon weight ratios (1: 8, 1:4, 1:1, 4:1, and 8:1) were investigated for fabricating the bipolar plate by hot-pressing process adding styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) as a binder. The specific surface area, porosity, and microstructure characteristics corresponding to the varied lead-graphite ratio of the prepared bipolar plates were studied. The relative difference in conductivity upon the compressibility of the plates is also examined. Finally, the wettability and electrochemical properties of the prepared bipolar plates were evaluated through water contact angle and cyclic voltammetry analysis.

In this study, a smoothing method was applied to improve the accuracy of peak wave period estimation using water surface elevation data collected from two oceanographic and meteorological observation towers situated on the western coast of the Korean Peninsula. The effectiveness of the smoothing method was validated by assessing the surface elevation variance and total wave energy. Subsequently, we examined the impact of the smoothing application. The results of our analysis revealed a reduction of approximately 27% in comparison to the confidence interval of the initially estimated spectrum upon applying the smoothing method. Furthermore, a slight variation of approximately 1–2 s was observed between the peak wave period calculated from the estimated spectrum and that obtained through the smoothing process. Utilizing statistical methods to determine the optimal smoothing parameter count, we observed an increasing trend as the range of significant wave heights decreased.

Thermoforming (TF) is a process used for fabricating products by applying heat and vacuum pressure to a plastic film or plate. Typically, TF molds require post-processing, resulting in additional costs and time consumption. Furthermore, continuous application of lubricant is necessary to prevent corrosion and facilitate mold release. Electrochemical polishing (ECP) is a technique used to achieve a polished surface on metal through an electrochemical reaction. In this research, a novel approach is proposed as a solution to the need for lubricants and manual post-processing in mold preparation, utilizing pulse electrochemical polishing (PECP). A comparative analysis is conducted on the reproducibility of products and the forces required for mold release among molds prepared using PECP, lubricated molds, and unpolished molds. To assess product reproducibility, the radii of curvature of all mold steps and grooves are determined and compared. Furthermore, peeling tests are conducted to estimate the forces required for mold release. Product surface evaluation is performed using atomic force microscopy, while lateral force microscopy is employed to measure the reductions in surface frictional force achieved by PECP.

Cirsium setidens is commonly used as a food ingredient, and it is typically stored and distributed in a dried form to prolong its shelf life. In a previous study, a micro-oil-sprayed thermal air (MOTA) technique was developed, which effectively enhanced the rehydration properties and improved the color characteristics of Cirsium setidens after processing. Here, we investigated the relationship between the color characteristics and taste of MOTA-processed C. setidens and the effect of NaCl pretreatment, prior to processing, on the final quality of dried C. setidens. NaCl pretreatment, whether combined with the MOTA technique or not, showed improved color characteristics, in which MOTA-and NaCl+ MOTA-processed C. setidens manifested equal color characteristics. In contrast, NaCl + MOTA-processed C. setidens resulted in significantly higher values of sourness and saltiness than MOTA-processed C. setidens when the taste of the rehydrated C. setidens was examined using an electronic tongue (Astree II; Alpha MOS, Toulouse, France). Pearson correlation coefficient analysis showed that sourness and saltness were negatively correlated with Hunter a* values and positively correlated with Hunter L* and Hunter b* values, indicating that the color characteristics of dried and rehydrated C. setidens could be indicators of taste. Furthermore, the amounts of total phenol and chlorophyll were better preserved in C. setidens processed by the MOTA technique with NaCl than by the MOTA technique alone. Our data revealed that the color characteristics of dried plants are associated with the taste of processed C. setidens, and that the MOTA technique with NaCl pretreatment is a useful method for preserving health-promoting compounds during processing.

Accurately forecasting electrical signals from three-phase Direct Torque Control (DTC) induction motors is crucial for achieving optimal motor performance and effective condition monitoring. However, the intricate nature of multiple DTC induction motors and the variability in operational conditions present significant challenges for conventional prediction methodologies. To address these obstacles, we propose an innovative solution that leverages the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to preprocess simulation data from electrical motors. A Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) network then uses this altered data to forecast processed motor signals. Our proposed approach is thoroughly examined using a comparative examination of cutting-edge forecasting models such as the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). This rigorous comparison underscores the remarkable efficacy of our approach in elevating the precision and reliability of forecasts for induction motor signals. The results unequivocally establish the superiority of our method across stator and rotor current testing data, as evidenced by Mean Absolute Error (MAE) average results of 92.6864 and 93.8802 for stator and rotor current data, respectively. Additionally, compared to alternative forecasting models, the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) average results of 105.0636 and 85.7820 underscore reduced prediction loss.

Abstract Background Previous studies have shown that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) can attenuate inflammatory responses in peripheral tissues and also improve some neurological disorders and cognitive function in the brain. However, it is not clear how VNS is involved in neuropathological processes in brain tissues. Here, we investigated the regulatory effects of VNS on the production of proinflammatory cytokines in the hippocampus of an animal model of continuous stress (CS). Methods CS was induced by placing rats in cages immersed with water, and acute or chronic electrical stimulation was applied to the cervical vagus nerve of CS animals. Protein levels in the gastric and hippocampal tissues were measured by western blotting and protein signals analyzed by immunofluorescence staining. von Frey test and forced swimming test were performed to assess pain sensitivity and depressive-like behavior in rats, respectively. Results Levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in the gastric and hippocampal tissues were significantly increased in CS animals compared to the untreated control and downregulated by acute VNS (aVNS). Iba-1-labeled microglial cells in the hippocampus of CS animals revealed morphological features of activated inflammatory cells and then changed to a normal shape by VNS. VNS elevated hippocampal expression of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7 nAChR) in CS animals, and pharmacological blockade of α7 nAChR increased the production of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, thus suppressing cholinergic anti-inflammatory activity that was mediated by VNS. Chronic VNS (cVNS) down-regulated the hippocampal production of active form of caspase 3 and 5-HT1A receptors and also decreased levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in the gastric and hippocampal tissues of CS animals. Pain sensitivity and depressive-like behavior, which were increased by CS, were improved by cVNS. Conclusions Our data suggest that VNS may be involved in modulating pathophysiological processes caused by CS in the brain.

Background This study assessed the effect of a single bolus administration of lidocaine on the prevention of tourniquet-induced hypertension (TIH) and compared the effect of lidocaine to that of ketamine in patients undergoing general anesthesia. Methods This randomized, controlled, double-blind study included 75 patients who underwent lower limb surgery using a tourniquet. The patients were administered lidocaine (1.5 mg/kg, n = 25), ketamine (0.2 mg/kg, n = 25) or placebo (n = 25). The study drugs were administered intravenously 10 min before tourniquet inflation. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and heart rate (HR) were measured before tourniquet inflation, after tourniquet inflation for 60 min at 10 min intervals, and immediately after tourniquet deflation. The incidence of TIH, defined as an increase of 30% or more in SBP or DBP during tourniquet inflation, was also recorded. Results SBP, DBP, and HR increased significantly over time in the control group compared to those in the lidocaine and ketamine groups for 60 min after tourniquet inflation (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, and P = 0.007, respectively). The incidence of TIH was significantly lower in the lidocaine (n = 4, 16%) and ketamine (n = 3, 12%) group than in the control group (n = 14, 56%) (P = 0.001). Conclusion Single-bolus lidocaine effectively attenuated blood pressure increase due to tourniquet inflation, with an effect comparable to that of bolus ketamine.

In this study, the internal environment such as the air temperature, humidity, and wall temperature of the underground utility tunnel, was analyzed. The current status and problems of the air conditioning system were examined by analyzing the capacity of the exhaust fan and the air velocity inside the utility tunnel. The field experiment showed that the utility tunnel has a relative humidity of 95% or higher for most sections during summer. The deviation of the internal air temperature was about $4~^{\circ }\text{C}$ depending on the section, and the dew condensation occurred. However, most of the exhaust fans has a capacity below the standard minimum air velocity of 2.5m $\cdot \text{s}^{-1}$ . In particular, in the section where dew condensation occurred, the air velocity was 0.26 to 0.97 $\text{m}\cdot \text{s}^{-1}$ , indicating the presence of stagnant air inside the facility. Therefore, this study attempted to minimize dew condensation by calculating the proper exhaust fan capacity using computational fluid dynamics and installing circulation fans and duct systems in the section where the dew condensation occurred. As a result, when a circulation fan was installed, it was possible to increase the air velocity inside the utility tunnel, and the relative humidity could be reduced by about 78%. By installing a duct, the direct supply of external air or the discharge of internal humid air was simulated for the section where dew condensation occurred. The result showed that the relative humidity could be reduced by about 78% when the duct system was operated in the intake direction.

Bandwidth trading procedures can be made to incentivize users to sell their needless traffic and indirectly reduce the probability of traffic congestion. However, implementation of bandwidth trading is opex-heavy from Internet Service Provider (ISP) perspective, while on the other hand, users also do not trust network executions from the ISP due to its heavily centralized control. These issues hinder the applicability of bandwidth trading and become our motivation to propose this paper. Our bandwidth-trading framework utilize software-defined networking (SDN) and blockchain. SDN automates the bandwidth trading executions from the ISP side and reduces the opex. Meanwhile, the smart contract is a trusted platform for building a trading marketplace where buyers, sellers, and SDN controllers can negotiate the trading terms. Once the trading is executed, SDN controllers generate proof of trading that must be submitted to the smart contract as proof of provisioning. We implement our works using Ethereum and POX SDN controllers, and the results prove that it can provide a seamless bandwidth trading experience with reasonable overhead. Furthermore, by committing to our framework, bandwidth trading can be executed fairly and securely because all previous provisioning can be cross-checked through the provided proof-of-trading.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unique challenges for rapidly designing, initiating, and delivering therapeutic clinical trials. PRINCIPLE (Platform Randomised Trial of Treatments in the Community for Epidemic and Pandemic Illnesses) is the UK national platform investigating repurposed therapies for COVID-19 treatment of older people in the community at high risk of complications. Standard methods of patient recruitment were failing to meet the required pace and scale of enrolment. This paper describes the development and appraisal of a near real-time, data-driven, ethical approach for enhancing recruitment in community care by contacting people with a recent COVID-19 positive test result from the central NHS Test and Trace service within approximately 24–48 h of their test result. Methods A multi-disciplinary team was formed to solve the technical, ethical, public perception, logistical and information governance issues required to provide a near-real time (approximately within 24–48 h of receiving a positive test) feed of potential trial participants from test result data to the research team. PRINCIPLE was also given unique access to the Summary Care Record (SCR) to ensure safe prescribing, and to enable the trial team to quickly and safely bring consented patients into the trial. A survey of the public was used to understand public perceptions of the use of test data for this proposed methodology. Results Prior to establishing the data service, PRINCIPLE registered on average 87 participants per week. This increased by up to 87 additional people registered per week from the test data, contributing to an increase from 1013 recruits to PRINCIPLE at the start of October 2020 to 2802 recruits by 20 December 2020. Whilst procedural caveats were identified by the public consultation, out of 2639 people contacted by PRINCIPLE following a positive test result, no one raised a concern about being approached. Conclusions This paper describes a novel approach to using near-real time NHS operational data to recruit community-based patients within a few days of presentation with acute illness. This approach increased recruitment and reduced time between positive test and randomisation, allowing more rapid evaluation of treatments and increased safety for participants. End-to-end public and patient involvement in the design of the approach provided evidence to inform information governance decisions. Hydrogen has become an indispensable aspect of sustainable energy resources due to depleting fossil fuels and increasing pollution. Since hydrogen storage and transport is a major hindrance to expanding its applicability, green ammonia produced by electrochemical method is sourced as an efficient hydrogen carrier. Several heterostructured electrocatalysts are designed to achieve significantly higher electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction (NRR) activity for electrochemical ammonia production. In this study, we controlled the nitrogen reduction performances of Mo2C-Mo2N heterostructure electrocatalyst prepared by a simple one pot synthesis method. The prepared Mo2C-Mo2N0.92 heterostructure nanocomposites show clear phase formation for Mo2C and Mo2N0.92, respectively. The prepared Mo2C-Mo2N0.92 electrocatalysts deliver a maximum ammonia yield of about 9.6 μg h-1 cm-2 and a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of about 10.15%. The study reveals the improved nitrogen reduction performances of Mo2C-Mo2N0.92 electrocatalysts due to the combined activity of the Mo2C and Mo2N0.92 phases. In addition, the ammonia production from Mo2C-Mo2N0.92 electrocatalysts is intended by the associative nitrogen reduction mechanism on Mo2C phase and by Mars-van-Krevelen mechanism on Mo2N0.92 phase, respectively. This study suggests the importance of precisely tuning the electrocatalyst by heterostructure strategy to substantially achieve higher nitrogen reduction electrocatalytic activity.

Photoreceptor cells (PRCs) are the light-detecting cells of the retina. Such cells can be non-invasively imaged using optical coherence tomography (OCT) which is used in clinical settings to diagnose and monitor ocular diseases. Here we present the largest genome-wide association study of PRC morphology to date utilising quantitative phenotypes extracted from OCT images within the UK Biobank. We discovered 111 loci associated with the thickness of one or more of the PRC layers, many of which had prior associations to ocular phenotypes and pathologies, and 27 with no prior associations. We further identified 10 genes associated with PRC thickness through gene burden testing using exome data. In both cases there was a significant enrichment for genes involved in rare eye pathologies, in particular retinitis pigmentosa. There was evidence for an interaction effect between common genetic variants, VSX2 involved in eye development and PRPH2 known to be involved in retinal dystrophies. We further identified a number of genetic variants with a differential effect across the macular spatial field. Our results suggest a continuum between common and rare variation which impacts retinal structure, sometimes leading to disease.

The eye is the window through which light is transmitted and visual sensory signalling originates. It is also a window through which elements of the cardiovascular and nervous systems can be directly inspected, using ophthalmoscopy or retinal imaging. Measurements of ocular parameters may therefore offer important information on the physiology and homeostasis of these two important systems. Here we report the results of a genetic characterisation of retinal vasculature. Four genome-wide association studies performed on different aspects of retinal vasculometry phenotypes, such as arteriolar and venular tortuosity and width, found significant similarities between retinal vascular characteristics and cardiometabolic health. Our analyses identified 119 different regions of association with traits of retinal vasculature, including 89 loci associated arteriolar tortuosity, the strongest of which was rs35131825 (p = 2.00×10-108), 2 loci with arteriolar width (rs12969347, p = 3.30×10-09 and rs5442, p = 1.9E-15), 17 other loci associated with venular tortuosity and 11 novel associations with venular width. Our causal inference analyses also found that factors linked to arteriolar tortuosity cause elevated diastolic blood pressure and not vice versa.

BackgroundThe Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ) is used to assess asthma symptom control. The relationship between the questionnaire items and symptom control has not been fully studied in severe asthmatic patients, and its validity for making comparisons between subgroups of patients is unknown.MethodsData was obtained from patients in the United Kingdom Severe Asthma Registry whose symptom control was assessed using the five-item ACQ (ACQ5) (n = 2,951). Confirmatory factor analysis determined whether a latent factor for asthma symptom control, as measured by the ACQ5, was consistent with the data. Measurement invariance was examined in relation to ethnicity, sex and age; this included testing for approximate measurement invariance using Bayesian Structural Equation Modelling (BSEM). The fitted models were used to estimate the internal consistency reliability of the ACQ5. Invariance of factor means across subgroups was assessed.ResultsA one-factor construct with residual correlations for the ACQ5 was an excellent fit to the data in all subgroups (Root Mean Square Error Approximation 0.03 [90%CI 0.02,0.05], p-close fit 0.93, Comparative Fit Index 1.00, Tucker Lewis Index 1.00}. Expected item responses were consistent for Caucasian and non-Caucasian patients with the same absolute level of symptom control. There was some evidence that females and younger adults reported wakening more frequently during the night than males and older adults respectively with the same absolute level of symptom control (pConclusionThe ACQ5 is informative in comparing levels of symptom control between severe asthmatic patients of different ethnicities, sexes and ages. It is important that analyses are replicated in other severe asthma registries to determine whether measurement invariance is observed.

Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension is a rare and fatal disease with a heterogeneous treatment response. Here the authors show that unsupervised machine learning of whole blood transcriptomes from 359 patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension identifies 3 subgroups (endophenotypes) that improve risk stratification and provide new molecular insights.

Accurate parcellation of cortical regions is crucial for distinguishing morphometric changes in aged brains, particularly in degenerative brain diseases. Normal aging and neurodegeneration precipitate brain structural changes, leading to distinct tissue contrast and shape in people aged >60 years. Manual parcellation by trained radiologists can yield a highly accurate outline of the brain; however, analyzing large datasets is laborious and expensive. Alternatively, newly-developed computational models can quickly and accurately conduct brain parcellation, although thus far only for the brains of Caucasian individuals. To develop a computational model for the brain parcellation of older East Asians, we trained magnetic resonance images of dimensions 256 × 256 × 256 on 5,035 brains of older East Asians (Gwangju Alzheimer’s and Related Dementia) and 2,535 brains of Caucasians. The novel N-way strategy combining three memory reduction techniques inception blocks, dilated convolutions, and attention gates was adopted for our model to overcome the intrinsic memory requirement problem. Our method proved to be compatible with the commonly used parcellation model for Caucasians and showed higher similarity and robust reliability in older aged and East Asian groups. In addition, several brain regions showing the superiority of the parcellation suggest that DeepParcellation has a great potential for applications in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.
