Abstract: Abstract The CMS detector, including its muon system, has been operating at the CERN LHC in increasingly challenging conditions for about 15 years. The muon detector was designed to provide excellent triggering and track reconstruction for muons produced in proton–proton collisons at an instantaneous luminosity ( $$\mathcal {L}$$ L ) of $$1 \times 10^{34}$$ 1 × 10 34 cm $$^{-2}$$ - 2 s $$^{-1}$$ - 1 . During the Run 2 data-taking period (2015–2018), the LHC achieved an instantaneous luminosity of twice its design value, resulting in larger background rates and making the efficient detection of muons more difficult. While some backgrounds result from natural radioactivity, cosmic rays, and interactions of the circulating protons with residual gas in the beam pipe, the dominant source of background hits in the muon system arises from proton–proton interactions themselves. Charged hadrons leaving the calorimeters produce energy deposits in the muon chambers. In addition, high-energy particles interacting in the hadron calorimeter and forward shielding elements generate thermal neutrons, which leak out of the calorimeter and shielding structures, filling the CMS cavern. We describe the method used to measure the background rates in the various muon subsystems. These rates, in conjunction with simulations, can be used to estimate the expected backgrounds in the High-Luminosity LHC. This machine will run for at least 10 years starting in 2029 reaching an instantaneous luminosity of $$\mathcal {L} = 5 \times \text {10}^\text {34}\,\text {cm}^\text {-2}\,\text {s}^\text {-1}$$ L = 5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 and increasing ultimately to $$\mathcal {L} = 7.5 \times \text {10}^\text {34}\,\text {cm}^\text {-2}\,\text {s}^\text {-1}$$ L = 7.5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 . These background estimates have been a key ingredient for the planning and design of the muon detector upgrade.

Abstract: Compared with the traditional phased array radar, the co-located multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is able to transmit orthogonal waveforms to form different illuminating modes, providing a larger freedom degree in radar resource management. In order to implement the effective resource management for the co-located MIMO radar in multi-target tracking, this paper proposes a resource management optimization model, where the system resource consumption and the tracking accuracy requirements are considered comprehensively. An adaptive resource management algorithm for the co-located MIMO radar is obtained based on the proposed model, where the sub-array number, sampling period, transmitting energy, beam direction and working mode are adaptively controlled to realize the time-space resource joint allocation. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, the co-located MIMO radar using the proposed algorithm can satisfy the predetermined tracking accuracy requirements with less comprehensive cost compared with the phased array radar.

Abstract: © 1963-2012 IEEE. The CMS Collaboration has been developing large-area triple-gas electron multiplier (GEM) detectors to be installed in the muon Endcap regions of the CMS experiment in 2019 to maintain forward muon trigger and tracking performance at the High-Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC); 10 preproduction detectors were built at CERN to commission the first assembly line and the quality controls (QCs). These were installed in the CMS detector in early 2017 and participated in the 2017 LHC run. The collaboration has prepared several additional assembly and QC lines for distributed mass production of 160 GEM detectors at various sites worldwide. In 2017, these additional production sites have optimized construction techniques and QC procedures and validated them against common specifications by constructing additional preproduction detectors. Using the specific experience from one production site as an example, we discuss how the QCs make use of independent hardware and trained personnel to ensure fast and reliable production. Abstract: Anti-cancer targeting drugs appear to be a new and powerful "weapon" for cancer therapies. These targeting drugs are directed against specific molecules that are over-expressed or where certain unique factors are aberrantly expressed either in cancer cells or in diseased cell sites. Compared with traditional chemotherapeutic drugs, these targeting drugs have the advantages of high specificity, efficacy and less side effects. Target therapy is a breakthrough and revolutionary advance in the field of cancer therapy. Tumor angiogenesis plays a key role in tumor growth and metastasis and the mutation of tyrosine kinases is also strongly associated with cancer progression. Thus, in this review, we will discuss the advances in the development of targeting anti-cancer drugs by narrowing it down to small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies against epidermal growth factor receptors belonging to the ErbB family of receptor tyrosine kinases and angiogenic inhibitors. It will also address concerns for drug resistance and adverse events.

Abstract: Phosphaplatin platinum (IV) (RRD4) complex has exceptional antitumor properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects and the mechanism of action of free and liposome-encapsulated RRD4 in breast cancer.Liposome-encapsulated RRD4 prepared by thin-film dehydration: hydration and free RRD4 were tested in vivo and in vitro against 4T1 breast cancer cells. Cell proliferation, migration and viability were determined. Tissue and cell production and expression of pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) were assessed by ELISA and western blot. 4T1 cells treated with PEDF siRNA were evaluated for viability and apoptosis.RRD4 inhibited tumor growth and prevented distant metastasis. Liposome formulation enhanced this therapeutic benefit without increasing toxicity and prolonged RRD4 retention in tumor tissues. In vitro, RRD4 induced 4T1 apoptosis through up-regulation of FAS, BAX, and PUMA, and down-regulation of BCL2. RRD4 facilitates a FAS-intrinsic signaling mechanism. PEDF up-regulation represents another antitumor mechanism associated with this phosphaplatin compound.Free RRD4 or formulated into liposomes, are excellent candidates for adjuvant therapy against breast tumor growth and metastasis.

Abstract: Objectives: Our objective was to determine the impact of maternal HIV-hepatitis B virus (HBV) coinfection on pregnancy outcomes.Methods: The current study was conducted in a county of Yi Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China. Data were abstracted from hospitalisation records, including maternal and infant information. The seroprevalences of HIV and HBV infections and HIV-HBV coinfection were determined and the impact of maternal HIV-HBV coinfection on adverse pregnancy outcomes was assessed using logistic regression analysis. A treatment effects linear regression model was also applied to examine the effect of HBV, HIV or coinfection to quantify the absolute difference in birth weight from a reference of HBV-HIV negative participants.Results: A total of 13 198 pregnant women were included in our study, and among them, 99.1% were Yi people and 90.8% lived in rural area. The seroprevalences of HIV and HBV infections and HIV-HBV coinfection were 3.6% (95% CI: 3.2% to 3.9%), 3.2% (95% CI: 2.9% to 3.5%) and 0.2% (95% CI: 0.1% to 0.2%) among the pregnant women, respectively. Maternal HIV-HBV coinfection was a risk factor for low birth weight (adjusted OR (aOR)=5.52, 95% CI: 1.97 to 15.40). Compared with the HIV mono-infection group, the risk of low birth weight was significantly higher in the HIV-HBV coinfection group (aOR=3.62, 95% CI: 1.24 to 10.56). Maternal HIV infection was associated with an increased risk of low birth weight (aOR=1.90, 95% CI: 1.38 to 2.60) and preterm delivery (aOR=2.84, 95% CI: 1.81 to 4.47). Perinatal death was more common when mothers were infected with HBV (aOR=2.85, 95% CI: 1.54 to 5.26).Conclusions: The prevalence of HIV infection was high among pregnant women of the Yi region. Both HIV and HBV infections might have adverse effects on pregnancy outcomes. Maternal HIV-HBV coinfection might be a risk factor for low birth weight in the Yi region, which needs to be confirmed. Abstract: Micropattern gaseous detectors (MPGD) underwent significant upgrades in recent years, introducing resistive materials to build compact spark-protected devices. Exploiting this technology further, various features such as space and time resolution, rate capability, sensitive area, operational stability and radiation hardness can be improved. This contribution introduces a new type of MPGD, namely the Fast Timing Micropattern (FTM) detector, utilizing a fully resistive WELL structure. It consists of a stack of several coupled layers where drift and WELL multiplication stages alternate in the structure, yielding a significant improvement in timing properties due to competing ionization processes in the different drift regions. Two FTM prototypes have been developed so far. The first one is uWELL-like, where multiplication takes place in the holes of a kapton foil covered on both sides with resistive material. The second one has a resistive Micromegas-like structure, with multiplication developing in a region delimited by a resistive mesh. The structure of these prototypes will be described in detail and the results of the characterization study performed with an X-Ray generator with two different gas mixtures will be presented. First results on rate capability and time resolution based on data collected with cosmic rays and muon/pion test beams will also be presented. This contribution introduces a new type of Micropattern Gaseous Detector, the Fast Timing Micropattern (FTM) detector, utilizing fully Resistive WELL structures. The structure of the prototype will be described in detail and the results of the characterization study performed with an X-ray gun will be presented, together with the first results on time resolution based on data collected with muon/pion test beams.

13. Influence of potassium nitrate on antioxidant level and secondary metabolite genes under cold stress in Panax ginseng

Abstract: The overall survival mechanism and secondary metabolite synthesis under cold stress conditions (4°C) at exogenous supply with KNO3 were studied in mountain ginseng adventitious root cultures. Expressed sequence tags encoding antioxidant enzymes, such as catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and also ginsenoside-related secondary metabolites were obtained, and expression studies were carried out using quantitative real-time PCR. Chilled adventitious root cultures grown in vitro with or without an exogenous supply with K+ were differentially regulated. Expressions of PgCAT, PgAPX, and PgGPX-1 were increased, whereas PgGPX-2 and all ginsenoside-related secondary metabolite genes showed slight down-regulation upon chilling stress. Interestingly, the most genes were up-regulated at the increased potassium supply except the cytochrome P450 gene, which shows clearly the specific effect of potassium on the antioxidant level and secondary metabolite gene expression involved in the survival mechanism. In addition, we studied the activities of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, which showed similar pattern of changes. Adventitious root dry weight and relative water content were found to increase at 0.05 mM KNO3. The high level of potassium is needed for Panax ginseng under chilling conditions to increase its cold tolerance through activating the anti-oxidant system as well as to increase ginsenoside-related secondary metabolite transcripts.

Abstract: The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector installed at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has an extensive muon system which provides information simultaneously for identification, track reconstruction and triggering of muons. As a consequence of the extreme particle rate and high integrated charge, the essentiality to upgrade the LHC has given rise to the High Luminosity phase of the LHC (HL-LHC) project so that the CMS muon system will be upgraded with superior technological challenges. The CMS GEM collaboration offers a solution to equip the high-eta region of the muon system for Phase 2 (after the year 2017) with large-area triple-layer Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors, since GEMs have the ability to provide robust and redundant tracking and triggering functions with an excellent spatial resolution of order 100 micron and a high particle rate capability, with a close to 100% detection efficiency. In this contribution, the present status of the triple-GEM project will be reviewed, and the significant achievements from the start of the R&D in 2009 will be emphasized.

Abstract: The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is one of the two general-purpose detectors at the CERN LHC. LHC will provide exceptional high instantaneous and integrated luminosity after second long shutdown. The forward region |η| ≥ 1:5 of CMS detector will face extremely high particle rates in tens of kHz/cm2 and hence it will affect the momentum resolution, efficiency and longevity of the muon detectors. Here, η is pseudorapidity defined as η = −ln(tan(θ/2)), where θ is the polar angle measured from z-axis. To overcome these issues the CMSGEM collaboration has proposed to install new large size rate capable Triple Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors in the forward region of CMS muon system. The first set of Triple GEM detectors will be installed in the GE1/1 region (1:6 2 (70/30) and Ar/CO 2 /CF 4 (45/15/40). In 2014, good quality data was collected during test beam campaigns. In this paper, the performance of the detectors is summarized based on their tracking efficiency and time resolution.

Abstract: We measure the time dependence of the ratio of decay rates for D-0 -> K+ pi(-) to the Cabibbo- favored decay D-0 -> K- pi(+). The charge conjugate decays are included. A signal of 3: 3 x 10(4) D*(+) -> pi D-+(0), D-0 -> K+ pi(-) decays is obtained with D-0 proper decay times between 0.75 and 10 mean D-0 lifetimes. The data were recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9: 6 fb(-1) for p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1: 96 TeV. Assuming CP conservation, we search for D-0-(D) over bar (0) mixing and measure the mixing parameters to be R-D = (3: 51 +/- 0: 35) x 10(-3), y' = (4: 3 +/- 4: 3) x 10(-3), and x'(2) = (0: 08 +/- 0: 18) x 10(-3). We report Bayesian probability intervals in the x'(2)- y' plane and find that the significance of excluding the no- mixing hypothesis is equivalent to 6.1 Gaussian standard deviations, providing the second observation of D-0-(D) over bar (0) mixing from a single experiment.

Abstract: We report on a search for B0s→μ+μ− and B0→μ+μ− decays using proton-antiproton collision data at s√=1.96 TeV corresponding to 10 fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The observed number of B0 candidates is consistent with background-only expectations and yields an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(B0→μ+μ−)

Abstract: Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) are a proven position sensitive gas detector technology which nowadays is becoming more widely used in High Energy Physics. GEMs offer an excellent spatial resolution and a high particle rate capability, with a close to 100% detection efficiency. In view of the high luminosity phase of the CERN Large Hadron Collider, these aforementioned features make GEMs suitable candidates for the future upgrades of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector. In particular, the CMS GEM Collaboration proposes to cover the high-eta region of the muon system with large-area triple-GEM detectors, which have the ability to provide robust and redundant tracking and triggering functions. In this contribution, after a general introduction and overview of the project, the construction of full-size trapezoidal triple-GEM prototypes will be described in more detail. The procedures for the quality control of the GEM foils, including gain uniformity measurements with an x-ray source will be presented. In the past few years, several CMS triple-GEM prototype detectors were operated with test beams at the CERN SPS. Abstract: We report an analysis of the Λb0→Λc+π-π+π- decay in a data sample collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron corresponding to 2.4 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. We reconstruct the currently largest samples of the decay modes Λb0→Λc(2595)+π- (with Λc(2595)+→Λc+π+π-), b0→Λc(2625)+π- (with Λc(2625)+→Λc+π+π-), Λb0→Σc(2455)++π-π- (with Σc(2455)++→Λc+π+), and Λb0→Σc (2455)0π+π- (with Σc(2455)0→Λc+π-) and measure the branching fractions relative to the Λb0→Λc+π- branching fraction. We measure the ratio B(Λb0→Λc +π-π+π-)/ B(Λb0→Λc+π-)=3.04±0.33(stat)-0.55+0.70(syst) which is used to derive B(Λb0→Λc+π-π+π-)=(26.8-11.2+11.9)×10-3.

Abstract: A two-dimensional triangular finite element formulation including an extra degree of freedom was derived on the basis of Eringen's micropolar elasticity theory. The linear triangular element and a corresponding computer program were developed to investigate the relation between the Poisson's ratio of re-entrant honeycomb structure using various structural geometric parameters. According to our numerical results, the honeycomb structure can exhibit a negative Poisson's ratio with the appropriate re-entrant angle. We also found that the Poisson's ratio values varied when changing the honeycomb structure cell rib length and width.

Abstract: Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology is being considered for the forward muon upgrade of the CMS experiment in Phase 2 of the CERN LHC. Its first implementation is planned for the GE1/1 system in the $1.5 < \mid\eta\mid < 2.2$ region of the muon endcap mainly to control muon level-1 trigger rates after the second long LHC shutdown. A GE1/1 triple-GEM detector is read out by 3,072 radial strips with 455 $\mu$rad pitch arranged in eight $\eta$-sectors. We assembled a full-size GE1/1 prototype of 1m length at Florida Tech and tested it in 20-120 GeV hadron beams at Fermilab using Ar/CO$_{2}$ 70:30 and the RD51 scalable readout system. Four small GEM detectors with 2-D readout and an average measured azimuthal resolution of 36 $\mu$rad provided precise reference tracks. Construction of this largest GEM detector built to-date is described. Strip cluster parameters, detection efficiency, and spatial resolution are studied with position and high voltage scans. The plateau detection efficiency is [97.1 $\pm$ 0.2 (stat)]\%. The azimuthal resolution is found to be [123.5 $\pm$ 1.6 (stat)] $\mu$rad when operating in the center of the efficiency plateau and using full pulse height information. The resolution can be slightly improved by $\sim$ 10 $\mu$rad when correcting for the bias due to discrete readout strips. The CMS upgrade design calls for readout electronics with binary hit output. When strip clusters are formed correspondingly without charge-weighting and with fixed hit thresholds, a position resolution of [136.8 $\pm$ 2.5 stat] $\mu$rad is measured, consistent with the expected resolution of strip-pitch/$\sqrt{12}$ = 131.3 $\mu$rad. Abstract: The CMS collaboration considers upgrading the muon forward region which is particularly affected by the high-luminosity conditions at the LHC. The proposal involves Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) chambers, which are able to handle the extreme particle rates expected in this region along with a high spatial resolution. This allows to combine tracking and triggering capabilities, which will improve the CMS muon High Level Trigger, the muon identification and the track reconstruction. Intense R&D has been going on since 2009 and it has lead to the development of several GEM prototypes and associated detector electronics. These GEM prototypes have been subjected to extensive tests in the laboratory and in test beams at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). This contribution will review the status of the CMS upgrade project with GEMs and its impact on the CMS performance.

Objective: To examine the effect of age on body protein losses occurring during severe energy restriction in obesity. Research Methods and Procedures: Weanling (young) Sprague-Dawley rats (YR) were fed a high fat (35% energy) diet (HFD) until mean body weight approached that of a group of chowfed retired breeder (aged) rats (AR). Both groups were then fed HFD for an additional 2 weeks, after which selected controls from YR and AR groups were killed for baseline carcass analysis. Remaining rats were fed a very-low-energy diet (VLED, 33% kcal of HFD) for 3 weeks and then killed for carcass analysis. Results: YR had greater fat stores before VLED, and lost proportionately more fat and less protein during VLED than did AR. Weight loss composition during VLED was 66.7% fat, 11.1% protein, and 22.2% water in YR, and 39.4% fat, 26.2% protein, and 34.3% water in AR. Greater YR fat loss during VLED* (70.6 ± 30.4 vs. 32.6 ± 29.1 g in AR; mean ± SD) was paralleled by significantly larger decreases in epididymal and retroperitoneal fat pad weights, mean adipocyte size, and lipoprotein lipase activity. Greater protein loss in AR (21.6 ± 13.9 g vs. 11.8 ± 10.7 g in YR) coincided with larger decreases in visceral organ weights and serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Energy expenditure changes during VLED were similar between groups. Discussion: Dietary obese young rats appear better able than aged rats to conserve body protein while losing body fat during severe energy restriction.

Abstract: Expressing fat-free mass (FFM) and body fat mass (BFM) as percentages of body weight or by weight is unsatisfactory. For example, tall patients with protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) can exhibit values for FFM and BFM similar to those of shorter well-nourished individuals. To obviate such difficulties, we propose use of height-normalized indices, namely, a FFM index [FFM (kg)/height (m)2, or FFMI] and a BFM index [BFM (kg)/height (m)2, or BFMI]. We calculated these indices in a reference population of 124 healthy young men and in 32 nonobese young men (from the Minnesota Study) before, during, and after experimental semistarvation. When values for FFMI and BFMI falling below the reference cohort's 5th percentile cutoff point were used as a criterion for PEM, these indices, together with basal oxygen-consumption rate, diagnosed PEM in 27 of the 32 Minnesota Study subjects after 12 wk of semi-starvation. These findings indicate that FFMI and BFMI may be useful in nutritional assessment.

Abstract: We measured the effects of iopanoic acid on thyroid hormone metabolism in obese men during severe calorie restriction to study the nutrition regulation of thyroid hormone metabolism. Eight morbidly obese men received a weight-maintenance diet followed by 6 wk of 600 kcal/d. During underfeeding, patients received iopanoic acid or placebo for 2-wk periods in a double-blind crossover fashion. Underfeeding alone (UF) produced a 28.3% decline in the serum triiodothyronine (T3) concentration, and iopanoic acid plus underfeeding (IOP) produced a 49.5% decline in T3 concentration from baseline. Serum reverse T3 concentrations increased 289% during IOP compared with UF alone (p less than 0.001). Serum TSH concentration was unchanged by underfeeding but increased twofold during IOP treatment. Thyroid hormone kinetics demonstrated a decrease in T3 production during IOP compared with UF. These findings suggest that calorie restriction regulates T3 production by modulating only type I 5'-deiodinase activity.

Abstract: We grew Fe films on GaAs(100) at $\ensuremath{\sim}80\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ to suppress interface alloying and As outdiffusion, and obtained kinetically stabilized, pristine Fe films. We studied their magnetic properties using both x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and the magneto-optic Kerr effect. The salient magnetic features are as follows. A 2.1-ML-thick Fe film is already ferromagnetic and exhibits perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). Moreover, a spin reorientation transition occurs in films with $\ensuremath{\sim}2.8$ monolayer thickness. The PMA is attributable to preservation of the surface magnetic anisotropy by suppressing the As outdiffusion during the low-temperature growth of the Fe film. The PMA is associated with the enhancement of the orbital moment by only $\ensuremath{\sim}50%$ in contrast to values reported in some previous studies.

Abstract: We grow Fe films on $(4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Ga}\mathrm{As}(100)$ at room temperature and low substrate temperature $(\ensuremath{\sim}130\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K})$ and study their chemical structure by high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. We find direct spectroscopic evidence for the effective suppression of the outdiffusion of both Ga and As from the substrate by the low temperature growth. Further, the Fe film is found to be stable even after warming up to $400\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$. The thermal stability of the Fe film has kinetic origin; the diffusion of both Ga and As from the substrate through the already existing Fe film is expected to proceed via bulk diffusion that is much less efficient and thus a rate limiting process.

Abstract: With new more aggressive coarsening algorithms that while reducing memory also degrade convergence often dramatically, it was imperative that new interpolation routines be implemented to recover this degradation. The implementation details and results for three new interpolation routines, standard, extended, and F-F, are presented in this paper. The project was focused on parallel implementation, so there is little theoretical analysis. The references contain much of the algorithmic design issues and analysis, if further understanding or exploration is needed, see [1][2][3]. It will be shown throughout this paper that long-range interpolation is needed for a number of problems, for some cases, there is almost a reduction in iterations by 2 orders of magnitude.

Abstract: We report an updated measurement of the top quark mass in the lepton plus jets channel of t{bar t} events from p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. This measurement uses a dataset with integrated luminosity of 680 pb{sup -1}, containing 360 t{bar t} candidates separated into four subsamples. A top quark mass is reconstructed for each event by using energy and momentum constraints on the top quark pair decay products. We also employ the reconstructed mass of hadronic W boson decays W {yields} jj to constrain in situ the largest systematic uncertainty of the top quark mass measurement: the jet energy scale. Monte Carlo templates of the reconstructed top quark and W boson mass are produced as a function of the true top quark mass and the jet energy scale. The distribution of reconstructed top quark and W boson mass in the data are compared to the Monte Carlo templates using a likelihood fit to obtain: M{sub top} = 173.4 {+-} 2.8 GeV/c{sup 2}.

Abstract: The Online Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) is a new trigger processor dedicated to the 2-D reconstruction of charged particle trajectories at the level 2 of the CDF trigger. The SVT links the digitized pulse heights found within the Silicon Vertex Detector to the tracks reconstructed in the Central Outer Tracker by the level 1 Fast Track Finder. The SVT was recently modified in order to increase its efficiency. The new configuration uses all the Silicon Vertex detector layers. On the other hand the processing time has increased. This can be a problem at higher luminosities of the Tevatron. The "Road Warrior" is a new board that, eliminates redundant track candidates before the Track Fitting. It is based on the principle of the Associative Memory. The algorithm used is described in the paper, as well as the hardware implementation.

Abstract: The CDF experiment's Silicon Vertex Trigger is a system of 150 custom 9U VME boards that reconstructs axial tracks in the CDF silicon strip detector in a 15 microsecond pipeline. SVT's 35 micron impact parameter resolution enables CDF's Level 2 trigger to distinguish primary and secondary particles, and hence to collect large samples of hadronic bottom and charm decays. We review some of SVT's key design features. Speed is achieved with custom VLSI pattern recognition, linearized track fitting, pipelining, and parallel processing. Testing and reliability are aided by built-in logic state analysis and test-data sourcing at each board's input and output, a common inter-board data link, and a universal "Merger" board for data fan-in/fan-out. Abstract: The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) is a device that works inside the CDF Level 2 trigger to find and fit tracks in real time using the central silicon vertex detector information. SVT starts from tracks found by the Level 1 central chamber fast trigger and adds the silicon information to compute transverse track parameters with offline quality in about . The CDF SVT is fully installed and functional and has been exercised with real data during the spring and summer 2001. It is a complex digital device of more than 100 VME boards that performs a dramatic data reduction (only about one event in a thousand is accepted by the trigger). Diagnosing rare failures poses a special challenge and SVT internal data flow is monitored by dedicated hardware and software. This paper briefly covers the SVT architecture and design and reports on the SVT building/commissioning experience (hardware and software) and on the first results from the initial running.

Abstract: The Online Silicon Vertex Tracker is the new CDF-II level 2 trigger processor designed to reconstruct 2-D tracks within the Silicon Vertex Detector with high speed and accuracy. By performing a precise measurement of impact parameters the SVT allows tagging online B events which typically show displaced secondary vertices. Physics simulations show that this will greatly enhance the CDF-II B-physics capability. The SVT has been fully assembled and operational since the beginning of Tevatron RunII in April 2001. In this paper we briefly review the SVT design and physics motivation and then describe its performance during the early phase (April-October 2001) of run II.

Abstract: The role of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor in mediating the effect of testosterone exposure prenatally on neuronal apoptosis in the sexual dimorphic nucleus of the preoptic area (SDN-POA) of rats was studied. The endogenous testosterone was diminished by prenatal stress (PNS) or simulated by testosterone exposure (TE) to understand the effect of testosterone on NR1(a functional subunit protein of NMDA receptor) expression and neuronal apoptosis. To further study whether the testosterone, after being converted into estradiol, modulates NR1expression, 4-androstein-4-ol-3,17-dione (ATD; an aromatase inhibitor) was used to block the conversion of estradiol from testosterone. The expressions of the NR1mRNA and NR1subunit protein were quantified by RT-PCR and western blotting analysis, respectively. In addition, a noncompetitive antagonist of NMDA receptor, MK-801, was used to find out whether blockage of NMDA receptor affects the naturally occurring apoptosis in SDN-POA. The results showed the following. 1) Expression of perinatal NR1subunit protein in the central part of the medial preoptic area of male rats was significantly higher than that of females, especially on postnatal days 1 and 3. 2) The testosterone level of male fetuses on embryonic day 18 was significantly higher than that of females, while the testosterone level of TE females or PNS males was similar to that of intact males or intact females, respectively. 3) The apoptotic incidence of intact male rats was significantly less than that of females, and the apoptosis was stimulated by PNS in male or inhibited by TE in female. 4) The expression of NR1subunit protein could be inhibited by PNS or ATD-treatment in male, while stimulated by TE in female. 5) NR1mRNA showed no significant difference among intact male, PNS male, ATD-treated male, TE female and intact female rats. 6) The low apoptotic incidence of male rats was significantly increased when NMDA receptor was blocked by MK-801. These results suggest that testosterone, after being converted to estradiol, may prevent the SDN-POA neurons of male rats from apoptosis through enhancing the expression of NR1at the posttranscriptional level.

Abstract: We have reported a decrease in the number of arcuate nucleus (ARC)-immunoreactive beta-endorphin neurons in old (24 months) female C57BL/6J mice versus young (5 months) mice. Here, we have tested by immunocytochemistry whether age-related changes in beta-endorphin neuron numbers are selective for beta-endorphin neurons which do or do not contain estrogen receptors (E2R). We also compared beta-endorphin neuron number in mice with short- (S) and long-duration (L) ovariectomy (OVX), since the latter may protect against neuroendocrine aging. Mice were studied at 5 (young), 12 (middle-aged), or 23-24 months (old). When the mean number of neurons per tissue section (15 sections per animal) was examined, there were no significant differences between young and middle-aged S-OVX females for either beta-endorphin, E2R, or beta-endorphin/E2R neuron number. However, there were significant decreases in beta-endorphin-containing neurons in the oldest age group versus young females (young S-OVX: 74.4 +/- 11 (+/- SD) immunopositive neurons per tissue section, n = 10 mice; young L-OVX: 61.6 +/- 6.9, n = 6; old S-OVX: 45.7 +/- 9.9, n = 7; and old L-OVX: 37.5 +/- 7.3, n = 7). There were also decreases in beta-endorphin neurons which contained E2R in the oldest animals (young S-OVX: 16.6 +/- 6.4; young L-OVX: 13.7 +/- 1.3; old S-OVX: 9.2 +/- 1.8; L-OVX: 6.0 +/- 1.5) (p0.05 ANOVA). Both age (por = 0.001, two-way ANOVA) and ovarian status (por = 0.05) independently affected neuron number for both the beta-endorphin and beta-endorphin/E2R populations versus young mice. We tested whether the observed age and/or ovarian-related decreases were proportionally greater in the subpopulation of beta-endorphin neurons which contained E2R compared to the total beta-endorphin neuron population. In the oldest age group, there was no significant difference in the decrease with age in the population of beta-endorphin neurons which contained E2R and the total beta-endorphin population (p = 0.208). When we examined the E2R neuron population as compared to the beta-endorphin neuron populations, age-related decreases in the beta-endorphin neuronal population tended to be greater than the decreases seen in the E2R neuron population (p = 0.054 repeated measures ANOVA). It estimates region-wise labour demand elasticities both for short and long run. It finds that the Chinese economy has not transformed its growth pattern from an input-based one to a productivity-based one. Lastly, the paper argues that as the advantage of China in labour supply disappears, diminishing returns to capital will sooner or later occur if the sustainability of economic growth is not based on higher productivity. Abstract: This study was designed to identify psychological, behavioral, and physiological correlates of short- and long-term weight loss. Measures of psychological functioning, body composition, fat cell size and number, and attendance were evaluated in 76 obese women for their relationship to weight loss at the end of treatment and at a 1-y follow-up evaluation. Losing more weight during the first month of treatment and attending a higher percentage of treatment sessions were strongly associated with greater weight loss at the end of treatment and at 1-y follow-up. In addition, patients with the highest initial weights lost the most weight both at the end of treatment and at 1-y follow-up. Abstract: Five different procedures were used to estimate composition of weight loss by six obese individuals maintained on low-calorie regimens: 1) energy-nitrogen (E-N) balance; 2) total body water-nitrogen balance (TBW-N); 3) total body water (TBW); 4) total body potassium (TBK); and 5) an anthropometric method. Quantity of weight lost by obese subjects during comparison periods lasting 25–40 days ranged from 7.9 to 17.1 kg. Expressed as percent of aggregate weight loss, collective fat loss was 47.6 by E-N balance; 46.3 by TBW-N balance; 51.7 by TBK; 50.9 by anthrometry; and 33 by TBW. The E-N balance method yielded a tight cluster of individual means, whereas the other procedures gave a wide scatter of means. For short-term studies, the E-N balance procedure, although tedious and difficult, should yield results less variable than those generated by any of the other methods examined.

Abstract: This study investigated differences between measured and predicted resting energy expenditure (REE) in 80 women who averaged 104.6 kg in weight and were 49 kg and 88% overweight. Body composition analysis showed that 68% of the excess weight was fat and 32% was fat-free mass (FFM). Normalized for height, total body potassium (TBK) was 113 +/- 15% and total body water (TBW) was 133 +/- 21% of values in nonobese controls. The health of the FFM, defined as the potassium content per kg of FFM, was 84 +/- 13% of normal. Measured and predicted REE were only modestly related (r = +.59), and only 59% of measured REEs were within 10% of predicted values. A stepwise multiple regression indicated that weight was the single best predictor of measured REE and that the size of the FFM made a significantly greater contribution to REE than did the size of the fat mass. Commonly used equations for the prediction of REE are not appropriate for moderately or severely obese patients. Caloric prescription for weight reduction must be tailored to individuals rather than recommending the same caloric intake to persons with varying metabolic rates.

Abstract: Although the association between body weight and blood pressure is irrefutable, body fat mass and blood pressure level may not necessarily be directly related. To clarify the relative contribution of fat mass to blood pressure level, we analyzed data on 399 adults consecutively entering a weight control program. Although most subjects were notably overweight (mean ideal body weight 177%), the population represented a wide spectrum of body weights and blood pressure levels. Study parameters included body fat mass (by total body water, 40K, and Steinkamp formula), lean body mass, body build (chest to height ratio), fat cell number and size from bilateral buttock biopsy specimens, upper fat pattern by arm to thigh circumference ratio, and central fat pattern by subscapular to triceps skinfold ratio. Our results concurred with previously noted correlations between obesity and blood pressure (as mean arterial pressure): weight (r = 0.44), percentage of body fat (r = 0.19), and absolute fat mass (r = 0.38; all p less than 0.01); however, lean body mass, age, and body build correlated highly with both fat mass and mean arterial pressure, thereby confounding this relationship. Multivariate analysis was performed to evaluate the relative contribution of fat mass to mean arterial pressure in the presence of these and other potentially confounding variables. Lean body mass, age, body build, and an upper body fat pattern were found to contribute significantly to the variation in mean arterial pressure (p less than 0.01). In their presence, percentage of body fat, absolute fat mass, central fat pattern, fat cell characteristics, and age of onset of obesity did not significantly improve the predictability of mean arterial pressure.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract: Adipose tissue, the logical target component in weight reduction regimens, was measured in five obese subjects during weight reduction, and in four normal weight controls. The two compartment model of Ljunggren, consisting of adipose tissue (AT) and adipose tissue-free mass (AFM), was further developed by finding experimental values for total water, extracellular water (ECW), lipid, and cell solids in 16 biopsied subjects. The AFM was estimated from body potassium content (40K counting) by use of an age/sex specific constant for the K content in the fat free body. Five obese subjects maintained for 46 days on regimens averaging 800 kcal/day had initial AT from 48% to 60% of body weight compared with AT 27% to 46% in four normal controls. Weight reductions averaged 17.4 kg (12% of initial weight), with approximately equal reductions in adipose tissue, adipose-free mass, and water. Initial fluid compartment ratios in the obese were unusually high (ECW:ICW in AFM was 0.74 +/- 0.23 [S.D.] compared with 0.42 +/- 0.05 in normals); these values returned toward normal (to 0.59 +/- 0.06) with weight reduction. The fact that it was possible to disclose a hitherto unappreciated abnormality of hydration in the adipose-free mass of obese subjects and its change toward normal with weight reduction, suggests that the adipose:adipose-free model may have a special utility when body composition measurements are used to monitor the effects of weight reduction regimens on various body constituents.

Abstract: In order to find ways to modify adaptations during refeeding after fasting the amount of carbohydrate fed during refeeding was varied, or its absorption slowed by a glucosidase inhibitor. Exchanging dietary carbohydrate with fat diminished refeeding adaptations in carbohydrate pathways (glycogen contents of liver and muscle, glucose incorporation into carbondioxide, and triglyceride in adipose tissue), but instead facilitated lipid storage (weight of and lipoprotein lipase activity in adipose tissue). An early specific effect of carbohydrate refeeding was an increase in the insulin response in glucose metabolic pathways in adipose tissue. Inhibiting carbohydrate absorption by a glucosidase inhibitor (Acarbose) caused a delay in energy accumulation during refeeding both in glycogen stores, and, more markedly, in adipose tissue triglyceride stores. These data are consistent with the interpretation that the drug prevents or delays carbohydrate uptake, and causes less adaptations of adipose tissue metabolic pathways for lipid storage. The tissue adaptations during refeeding after fasting seem to depend on the energy substrate reaching these tissues.

Abstract: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were fasted for 65 h and then refed ad libitum for 8 days, during which time body weight and body composition returned to the levels of nonfasting controls. During refeeding, after a decrease on the lst day, daily food intake was moderately increased above control levels. This compensatory increase after the fast brought the total consumption for the whole period to the same level as for the controls. Thus, a greater body weight increase per gram food consumed ("food efficiency") was achieved during the refeeding period. Starvation-induced energy conservation processes thus seemed to persist during refeeding. This mechanism(s) might participate in causing weight gain after reduction as a treatment for obesity.
