1. Extent of optico-carotid recess is significantly associated with presence of bony dehiscences and bone thickness in the optico-carotid area

Abstract

Background: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the frequency of bony dehiscences in the optico-carotid recess (OCR) area and to measure the thickness of the bony lamellas bordering the OCR, according to our previously proposed OCR classification taking into account the extent of the recess. Methodology: A total of 100 human cadaver heads (n= 200 sphenoid sinuses) were investigated. Samples were divided into groups according to the presence and extent of OCR (no OCR, sub-optical OCR, latero-optical OCR). Bony dehiscences were visually identified and bone thickness was measured by using a high-resolution micrometer. Results: A bony dehiscence in the OCR area was observed in 20%. A significant difference in bony dehiscence occurrence rate between OCR types was found. The wall thickness of the bony carotid artery- and optic nerve canals bordering the OCR were 0.25 ± 0.16 mm and 0.27 ± 0.15 mm, respectively. Significant differences between OCR groups in bony wall thickness of the carotid artery canal and optic nerve canal were found. Samples with a latero-optical OCR had a significant thinner wall of the carotid artery and optic nerve canal than samples with a sub-optical OCR and no OCR. Conclusions: The current results indicate that the presence of an extended OCR, e.g. latero-optical, is highly associated with a greater risk of bony dehiscences and thinner bony lamellas in the OCR region.

Abstract The feasibility and surgical effort of a pre-lacrimal window approach (PLWA) depends on the width of the bony window anterior to the nasolacrimal duct. This study aimed to investigate gender-specific differences in feasibility of PLWA. A consecutive series of paranasal computed tomography scans from 50 females (n = 100) and 50 males (n = 100) were retrospectively analyzed. The primary outcome measure was the antero-posterior length of the bony pre-lacrimal window (BPLWA). The secondary outcome measure was the distribution of Simmen’s PLWA feasibility types (major, moderate and minor surgical effort). Abstract

Pathologies located at the posterior surface of the anterior wall and the floor (alveolar recess) of the maxillary sinus are challen- ging to visualize and access. Open approaches including lateral rhinotomy, Caldwell-Luc procedure or midfacial degloving allow a broad visualization but with a significant likelihood of post-operative morbidity (1). Access to the anterior wall and floor of the maxillary sinus by traditional endoscopic approaches is very difficult . The pre-lacrimal window approach (PLWA), as a modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy, provides a wide access to these challenging areas with a very low morbidity rate in total.

ZusammenfassungDiese DVO Leitlinien, die in erster Linie für Allgemeinmediziner und Spezialisten für Knochenerkrankungen bestimmt sind, sollten von allen im klinischen und ambulanten Bereich tätigen medizinischen Fachkräften angewendet werden. Ziel der Leitlinie ist die Verbesserung der Diagnose, Prävention und Behandlung von Osteoporose und der Folgen der Erkrankung auf der Grundlage evidenzbasierter Medizin.Klare Empfehlungen, welche Patienten zu diagnostizieren und behandeln sind (basierend auf Risikofaktoren [einschließlich sekundärer Osteoporose]) sowie Primär-, Sekundär- oder Tertiärprävention werden dargestellt, mit dem Schwerpunkt auf der postmenopausalen Osteoporose und der Osteoporose bei Männern.Die Identifizierung von Patienten mit einem hohen Risiko für Frakturen wird hervorgehoben, und spezifische Schwellenwerte für die Intervention sind definiert (20 % Hüftfrakturrisiko innerhalb von 10 Jahren diagnostischer Schwellenwert, 30 % Hüftfrakturrisiko innerhalb von 10 Jahren therapeutische Schwelle). Die Diagnose von Osteoporose basiert auf der Anamnese des Patienten, der körperlichen Untersuchung, dem Funktionstest (z. B. Timed Up and Go Test), konventionellen Röntgenaufnahmen der Brust- und Lendenwirbelsäule und der Bestimmung der Knochenmineraldichte (BMD) durch das DXA Verfahren.Die Anamnese ist entscheidend für die Abschätzung des Frakturrisikos auf der Grundlage von 40 wissenschaftlich überprüften Risikofaktoren, die das Frakturrisiko mindestens verdoppeln (z. B. Begleiterkrankungen, Hüftfrakturen in der Familie, prävalente Frakturen an jedem Ort, Lebensstil, Anwendung von Medikamenten, körperliche Aktivität und Stürze). Röntgenaufnahmen der Brust- und Lendenwirbelsäule sind wichtig, um prävalente Wirbelkörperfrakturen zu erkennen. Beim Fehlen eines großen Traumas kann jede Fraktur bei Erwachsenen über dem Alter von 50 Jahren eine Diagnose von Osteoporose nahelegen, mit dem höchsten Risiko für eine nachfolgende Fraktur innerhalb einer kurzen Zeit nach der ersten Fraktur. BMD-Messungen mit DXA sind wichtig, um das individuelle Frakturrisiko besser abschätzen zu können. Eine grundlegende Laboruntersuchung ist obligatorisch, um verschiedene Formen der sekundären Osteoporose ausschließen zu können.Der DVO-Patientenfindungs-Algorithmus basiert auf dem Geschlecht, Alter, Knochenmineraldichte und vorbestehenden Frakturen als wichtigste Informationen. Die Indikation für eine aktive anti-osteoporotische Therapie kann durch multiple Risikofaktoren modifiziert und verfeinert werden. Dieser Algorithmus wurde seit dem Richtlinien-Update 2006 verwendet und wurde entsprechend der internationalen Literatur zu Risikofaktoren für Osteoporose und osteoporotische Frakturen aktualisiert und angepasst.Die Behandlung der Osteoporose enthält viele Therapiepfeiler. Zusammen mit Empfehlungen für Bewegung, Physiotherapie und Sturzprävention sowie Ernährung (z. B. Calcium, Vit. D), werden pharmakologische Behandlungen basierend auf evidenzbasierter Medizin empfohlen. Die aktiven Anti-Osteoporose-Medikamente müssen für die Indikation postmenopausale Osteoporose und männliche Osteoporose in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz zugelassen sein. Das Management und die Vorbeugung von häufigen oder seltenen Nebenwirkungen aufgrund von Anti-Osteoporose-Behandlungen, die in der klinischen Praxis angewendet werden, werden ebenfalls detailliert behandelt.

Abstract

Kongenitale Daumenhypoplasien sind Teil der radialen Reduktionsfehlbildung und konnen sowohl als alleinige Fehlbildung als auch in Kombination mit weiteren Malformationen vorkommen. Die Reduktionsfehlbildung des Daumens wird in 5 Grade eingeteilt und reicht von gering ausgepragter Hypoplasie bis zur Aplasie des Daumens. Die Daumenhypoplasie fuhrt zu einer dem Schweregrad entsprechenden Storung der Greiffunktion. Der Grad der Daumenhypoplasie ist ausschlaggebend fur die Wahl der Therapie. Ab dem Stadium 3B stellt die Wiederherstellung des Daumens mittels Pollizisation des Zeigefingers die Behandlungsmethode der Wahl dar. Dabei wird der Zeigefinger zu einem Daumen umgeformt und unter Beibehaltung der Gefase und Nerven an die Position des Daumens transponiert. Das Skelett muss verkurzt, rotiert und abduziert werden. Die Muskulatur wird anschliesend, angepasst an die Funktion des neuen Daumens rekonstruiert. Dieses Vorgehen ermoglicht eine Wiederherstellung mit hochst moglicher Stabilitat, Sensibilitat und Beweglichkeit. Bei isolierter Daumenhypoplasie liefert die Pollizisation des Zeigefingers gute Resultate, die auch im Erwachsenenalter bestehen bleiben. Bei assoziierten Anomalien sind die Ergebnisse wegen der praexistenten Steifheit des Zeigefingers weniger verlasslich, stellen aber trotzdem keine Kontraindikation fur die Pollizisation des Zeigefingers dar.

Hintergrund Die kraniale Osteopathie nach Sutherland geht davon aus, dass intrinsische rhythmische Bewegungen des menschlichen Gehirns rhythmische Schwankungen von Liquor und spezifische rhythmische Veranderungen an duralen Membranen, Schadelknochen und dem Kreuzbein bewirken (primarer respiratorischer Mechanismus, PRM). Dieses Modell setzt voraus, dass die rhythmischen Fluktuationen tastbar und zum gesundheitlichen Vorteil des Patienten modifizierbar sind. Die Existenz eines PRM konnte jedoch in keiner der bisher veroffentlichten Studien gezeigt werden. Eine uberzeugende Interexaminer-Reliabilitat wurde nicht festgestellt und fur einen uber eine Placebowirkung hinausgehenden klinischen Effekt ergab sich bislang keine wissenschaftlich uberzeugende Evidenz.

Abstract

Background: Social adjustment is impaired in depressed patients. The difficulty to adjust to social circumstances has been hypothesized to be one of the causes of depression, as well as a consequence of the disorder. Genetic variation in the serotonin transporter gene has been previously associated with social adjustment levels in patients with mood disorders. Methods: We investigated whether variations on the HTR1A (rs6295) and HTR2A (rs7997012) genes were associated with levels of social adjustment using the Social Adjustment Scale in two samples of depressed patients (total n=156). Results: Patients carrying the GG genotype of the HTR2A-rs7997012 showed better social adjustment in areas of work and family unit bonding. Limitations: These findings did not survive correction for multiple testing and should be interpreted with caution. Conclusion: Our finding is in line with previous observations that have associated the G allele of the HTR2A-rs7997012 with higher rate of antidepressant response. The HTR2A-rs7997012 is worthy of further investigation in studies examining factors that are related to depression course and outcome. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

21. [Pollicization of the Index Finger in Patients with Congenital Thumb Hypoplasia]

Abstract

Congenital thumb hypoplasia is a radial deficiency occurring in the form of sole dysplasia or in combination with additional aberrations. Thumb hypoplasia can be categorised into 5 grades ranging from mild deformity to complete absence of the thumb. Thumb hypoplasia leads to a disturbance of grip function depending on its severity. The choice of treatment is based on the degree of thumb hypoplasia. For hypoplasia greater than grade 3B, restoration of the thumb using pollicization of the index finger is the treatment of choice. For this purpose the index finger is transformed into a thumb and is transposed to the position of the thumb with vessels and nerves being retained. The skeleton has to be shortened, rotated and abducted, followed by reconstruction of the muscles in line with the function of the new thumb. This procedure facilitates a restoration with maximal stability, sensitivity and mobility. In cases of isolated thumb hypoplasia, pollicization of the index finger yields good results persisting into adulthood. If associated aberrations are present, the outcome is less predictable because of the preexistent stiffness of the index finger. Nevertheless, associated aberrations do not represent a contraindication for index finger pollicization.

Abstract

Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis with deficient glucocorticoid feedback and alterations in the serotonergic system have been identified as biological correlates of mood disorders. Close examination of the interaction between these systems may offer insights into the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders and depression to understand how stress and these disorders are related. In this study, we investigated the relationship between plasma levels of cortisol and the dominant inhibitory serotonergic receptor, serotonin-1A (5-HT1A). Using positron emission tomography (PET) and the radioligand [carbonyl-11C]WAY-100635, we quantified the 5-HT1A receptor binding. Data from 12 male patients with social phobia and 18 matched control subjects were analysed. Seven brain regions were investigated: the anterior and posterior cingulate cortices, hippocampus, amygdala, medial orbitofrontal and retrosplenial cortices, and dorsal raphe nucleus. Partial correlation analysis, controlled for age and radiochemical variables, was performed to demonstrate the association between cortisol plasma levels and 5-HT1A receptor binding. Cortisol plasma levels were significantly lower in patients with social phobia compared to healthy controls. Moreover, we found strong negative correlations between cortisol plasma levels and 5-HT1A binding in the amygdala (r=-0.93, p=0.0004), hippocampus (r=-0.80, p=0.009), and retrosplenial cortex (r=-0.48, p=0.04) in patients with social phobia. Within the former two regions, these associations were significantly higher in patients than in healthy controls. This PET study confirms a negative association between plasma cortisol levels and the 5-HT1A receptor distribution consistent with studies in rodents and non-human primates. Dysregulation of the cortisol level might increase the vulnerability for mood disorders by altering limbic 5-HT1A receptors.

Abstract

Serotonin modulates the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis particularly via the serotonin-1A receptor (5-HT(1A)). Therefore, the rationale of this positron emission tomography (PET) study was to investigate the influence of the 5-HT(1A) receptor distribution in the human brain on plasma levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) and cortisol in vivo. Eighteen healthy female were measured with PET and the selective 5-HT(1A) receptor radioligand [carbonyl-(11)C]WAY-100635. Nine a priori defined brain regions (hypothalamus, orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala, hippocampus, anterior and posterior cingulate cortices, dorsal raphe nucleus, retrosplenial cortex, and insula) and the cerebellum (reference region) were delineated on coregistered MR images. DHEAS and cortisol plasma levels were collected by blood sampling in the morning of the PET day. Linear regression analysis of DHEAS plasma level as dependent variable and hypothalamic 5-HT(1A) receptor binding potential (BP) as independent variable showed a highly significant association (r=.691, p=.002). The hypothalamic 5-HT(1A) BP predicted 47.7% of the variability in DHEAS plasma levels. Regressions were borderline significant (p.01, Bonferroni corrected threshold.0056) between 5-HT(1A) BP in the anterior cingulate and orbitofrontal cortices and free cortisol levels. No significant associations between DHEAS or cortisol and the 5-HT(1A) receptor BP in other investigated brain regions were found. In conclusion, the serotonergic system may influence the DHEAS plasma level by modulating CRH and ACTH release via hypothalamic 5-HT(1A) receptors as reported for cortisol before. As disturbances of the HPA axis as well as changes of the 5-HT(1A) receptor distribution have been reported in affective disorders, future studies should focus on these interactions.

Abstract

Objectives: Various studies indicate that serotonin regulates impulsivity and the inhibitory control of aggression. Aggression is also known to be modified by sex hormones, which exert influence on serotonergic neurotransmission. The present study aimed to elucidate potential interactions between human aggression, the inhibitory serotonergic 5‐HT(1A) receptor, and sex hormones. Experimental Design: Thirty‐three healthy volunteers (16 women, aged 26.24 ± 5.5 yr) completed a validated questionnaire incorporating five dimensions of aggression. Subsequently, all subjects underwent positron emission tomography with the radioligand [carbonyl‐(11)C]WAY‐100635 to quantify 5‐HT(1A) binding potentials (BP(ND)s) in the prefrontal cortex, limbic areas, and midbrain. Also, plasma levels of testosterone, 17ß‐estradiol and sex hormone‐binding globulin (SHBG) were measured. Relations between aggression scores, regional 5‐HT(1A) BP(ND)s, and hormone levels were analyzed using correlations, multivariate analyses of variance, and linear regressions. Principal Observations: Statistical analyses revealed higher 5‐HT(1A) receptor BP(ND)s in subjects exhibiting higher aggression scores in prefrontal (all P < 0.041) and anterior cingulate cortices (P = 0.016). More aggressive subjects were also characterized by lower SHBG levels (P = 0.015). Moreover, higher SHBG levels were associated with lower 5‐HT(1A) BP(ND)s in frontal (P = 0.048) and cingulate cortices (all P < 0.013) and in the amygdala (P = 0.03). Conclusions: The present study provides first‐time evidence for a specific interrelation between the 5‐HT(1A) receptor distribution, sex hormones, and aggression in humans. Our findings point to a reduced down‐stream control due to higher amounts or activities of frontal 5‐HT(1A) receptors in more aggressive subjects, which is presumably modulated by sex hormones. Abstract

The higher prevalence rates of depression and anxiety disorders in women compared to men have been associated with sexual dimorphisms in the serotonergic system. The present positron emission tomography (PET) study investigated the influence of sex on the major inhibitory serotonergic receptor subtype, the serotonin-1A (5-HT(1A)) receptor.Sixteen healthy women and 16 healthy men were measured using PET and the highly specific radioligand [carbonyl-(11)C]WAY-100635. Effects of age or gonadal hormones were excluded by restricting the inclusion criteria to young adults and by controlling for menstrual cycle phase. The 5-HT(1A) receptor BP(ND) was quantified using (1) the 'gold standard' manual delineation approach with ten regions of interest (ROIs) and (2) a newly developed delineation method using a PET template normalized to the Montreal Neurologic Institute space with 45 ROIs based on automated anatomical labeling.The 5-HT(1A) receptor BP(ND) was found equally distributed in men and women applying both the manual delineation method and the automated delineation approach. Women had lower mean BP(ND) values in every region investigated, with a borderline significant sex difference in the hypothalamus (p = 0.012, uncorrected). There was a high intersubject variability of the 5-HT(1A) receptor BP(ND) within both sexes compared to the small mean differences between men and women.To conclude, when measured in the follicular phase, women do not differ from men in the 5-HT(1A) receptor binding. To explain the higher prevalence of affective disorders in women, further studies are needed to evaluate the relationship between hormonal status and the 5-HT(1A) receptor expression.

Abstract

Irregularities of the transvascular distribution of blood flow within the human ascending aorta have been documented by means of 16 Doppler gates positioned along one scanline of a sector scanner. The velocity profiles recorded from ten healthy adults, ten patients suffering from hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, ten patients suffering from hypertrophic nonobstructive cardiomyopathy, and ten patients with severe aortic insufficiency exhibited nonuniformities which varied not only from individual to individual but also between the groups and depending on the phase of the cardiac cycle. These variations prevent any local measurement from being representative for the instantaneous mean velocity in all cases. A reliable mean should therefore be determined by simultaneously taking into account all velocities within the vascular cross-section. A computer simulation in order to indicate a potential solution to this problem demonstrates that an annular array transducer can be excited in such a manner that it produces a homogeneous ultrasound beam of a transverse area a hundred times larger than the one obtained in the conventional maximally focussed mode.

Abstract

Objective The aim of this observational study was to evaluate the effectiveness of escitalopram in a naturalistic sample of employed people with mood and anxiety disorders. Method Days on sick leave 3 months prior and 3 months during treatment with escitalopram were recorded and compared (mirror study design) in 2378 patients (949 men and 1376 women). A further clinical examination including the clinical global impression of severity (CGI-S) and improvement (CGI-I) scales and assessments of tolerability were used to evaluate treatment effects in a subgroup of 807 study subjects. Abstract

A new method of momentum measurement of charged particles through multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS) in the OPERA lead-emulsion target is presented. It is based on precise measurements of track angular deviations carried out thanks to the very high resolution of nuclear emulsions. The algorithm has been tested with Monte Carlo pions. The results are found to describe within the expected uncertainties the data obtained from test beams. We also present a comparison of muon momenta evaluated through MCS in the OPERA lead-emulsion target with those determined by the electronic detectors for neutrino-charged current interaction events. Abstract

The OPERA neutrino experiment in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the vμ→ v τ channel, the v τ signature being the identification of the τ -lepton created in its charged current interaction. The hybrid apparatus consists of a large mass emulsion film/lead target complemented by electronic detectors. Placed in the LNGS, it is exposed to the high-energy long-baseline CERN Neutrino beam to Gran Sasso (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. The observation of a first v τ candidate event was reported in 2010. In this paper, we discuss the result of the analysis of the data taken during the first two years of operation (2008-2009) underlining the major improvements brought to the analysis chain and to the Monte Carlo simulations. The statistical significance of the one event observed so far is then evaluated to 95%. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

Abstract

The ORPHEUS dark matter detector consists of 450 g superconducting tin granules with diameters of 28 and 36 μm . The detector has been operating in the shallow site of the underground laboratory in Bern ( 70 m . w . e ). First preliminary results on WIMP detection sensitivity will be presented.

Abstract

The OPERA experiment is based on a hybrid technology combining electronic detectors (EDs) and nuclear emulsions. OPERA collected muon-neutrino interactions during the 2008 and 2009 physics runs of the CNGS neutrino beam, produced at CERN with an energy range of about 5-35 GeV. A total of 5.3 × 1019 protons on target equivalent luminosity have been analysed with the OPERA EDs: scintillator strips target trackers and magnetic muon spectrometers equipped with resistive plate gas chambers and drift tubes, allowing a detailed reconstruction of muon-neutrino interactions. Charged current (CC) and neutral current (NC) interactions are identified, using the measurements in the EDs, and the NC/CC ratio is computed. The momentum distribution and the charge of the muon tracks produced in CC interactions are analysed. Calorimetric measurements of the visible energy are performed for both the CC and NC samples. For CC events, the Bjorken-y distribution and the hadronic shower profile are computed. Abstract

Proton therapy is nowadays becoming a wide spread clinical practice in cancer therapy and sophisticated treatment planning systems are routinely used to exploit at best the ballistic properties of charged particles. The information on the quality of the beams and the range of the protons is a key issue for the optimization of the treatment. For this purpose, proton radiography can be used in proton therapy to obtain direct information on the range of the protons, on the average density of the tissues for treatment planning optimization and to perform imaging with negligible dose to the patient. We propose an innovative method based on nuclear emulsion film detectors for proton radiography, a technique in which images are obtained by measuring the position and the residual range of protons passing through the patient's body. Nuclear emulsion films interleaved with tissue equivalent absorbers can be fruitfully used to reconstruct proton tracks with very high precision. The first prototype of a nuclear emulsion based detector has been conceived, constructed and tested with a therapeutic proton beam at PSI. The scanning of the emulsions has been performed at LHEP in Bern, where a fully automated microscopic scanning technology has been developed for the OPERA experiment on neutrino oscillations. After track reconstruction, the first promising experimental results have been obtained by imaging a simple phantom made of PMMA with a step of 1 cm. A second phantom with five 5 x 5 mm^2 section aluminum rods located at different distances and embedded in a PMMA structure has been also imaged. Abstract

The OPERA detector at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) was used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio in the TeV energy region. We analyzed 403069 atmospheric muons corresponding to 113.4 days of livetime during the 2008 CNGS run. We computed separately the muon charge ratio for single and for multiple muon events in order to select different energy regions of the primary cosmic ray spectrum and to test the Rμ dependence on the primary composition. The measured Rμ values were corrected taking into account the charge-misidentification errors. Data have also been grouped in five bins of the "vertical surface energy" ℰμcos θ. A fit to a simplified model of muon production in the atmosphere allowed the determination of the pion and kaon charge ratios weighted by the cosmic ray energy spectrum. © Springer-Verlag / Società Italiana di Fisica 2010., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

The NA52 experiment searched for long-lived charged strangelets in 158 A GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS. We collected 1013 Pb+Pb interactions looking for negatively charged strangelets and 3 × 1011 Pb+Pb interactions for positively charged ones. No evidence for the production of strangelets has been observed. The upper strangelet production limits are discussed. Besides the strangelet searches NA52 was able to identify particles and anti-particles over a wide range in rapidity. Results of the invariant differential particle production cross sections including fragments up to carbon and 5 are presented.

Abstract

The NA52 experiment searches for long-lived charged strangelets in 158 A GeV c-1 Pb + Pb collisions at CERN SPS. The experiment is able to identify single particles coming from the collisions at pt = 0. We collected 1013 Pb + Pb interactions looking for negatively charged strangelets and 3 × 1011 Pb + Pb interactions for positively charged ones. No evidence for the production of strangelets has been observed. We present here resulting experimental differential and total upper production limits.

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino oscillation experiment is based on the use of the Emulsion Cloud Chamber (ECC). In the OPERA ECC, nuclear emulsion films acting as very high precision tracking detectors are interleaved with lead plates providing a massive target for neutrino interactions. We report on studies related to the effects occurring from the contact between emulsion and lead. A low radioactivity lead is required in order to minimize the number of background tracks in emulsions and to achieve the required performance in the reconstruction of neutrino events. It was observed that adding other chemical elements to the lead, in order to improve the mechanical properties, may significantly increase the level of radioactivity on the emulsions. A detailed study was made in order to choose a lead alloy with good mechanical properties and an appropriate packing technique so as to have a low enough effective radioactivity., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

A considerably improved phase transition homogeneity was observed with superheated superconducting Sn spheres as a result of laser melting and fast cooling. These spheres exhibited a very homogeneous phase transition behaviour independent of the orientation of the spheres with respect to the direction of the external magnetic field. Compared to previously untreated Sn spheres the spread of the phase transition boundaries was reduced by almost an order of magnitude. In addition, we studied mass production of Sn structures using vacuum evaporation and deposition. First encouraging results are reported.

Abstract

The OPERA experiment, designed to conclusively prove the existence of $\rm \nu_\mu \to \nu_\tau$ oscillations in the atmospheric sector, makes use of a massive lead-nuclear emulsion target to observe the appearance of $\rm \nu_\tau$'s in the CNGS $\rm \nu_\mu$ beam. The location and analysis of the neutrino interactions in quasi real-time required the development of fast computer-controlled microscopes able to reconstruct particle tracks with sub-micron precision and high efficiency at a speed of 20 cm^2 / h. This paper describes the performance in particle track reconstruction of the European Scanning System, a novel automatic microscope for the measurement of emulsion films developed for OPERA., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Besides the dedicated search for strangelets NA52 measures light (anti)particle and (anti)nuclei production over a wide range of rapidity. Compared to previous runs the statistics has been increased in the 1998 run by more than one order of magnitude for negatively charged objects at different spectrometer rigidities. At a rigidity of −20 GeV/c we measured 106 p , 103 d and one 3 He without any centrality requirements. These preliminary results together with previous measurements near central rapidity are discussed in the framework of a thermodynamical and a coalescence model.

Abstract

We present new results of the CERN experiment NA52 on the centrality dependence of π±, K±, p, d, and production yields near zero transverse momentum and at several rapidities, from 64% to 4% of the total Pb + Pb cross section. Baryon yields increase nearly linearly and K± yields faster than linearly with the number of participating nucleons Np. The antibaryon yields increase less than linearly with Np, indicating absorption. The centrality and rapidity dependence of the π−/π+ ratio indicates Coulomb interaction of the pions with the projectile spectator protons. Within the framework of a coalescence model the radius of the particle source has been estimated from the ratios d/p2 and /2. The source radii are similar for matter and antimatter and are found to increase with ~ Np0.30−0.36.

Abstract

Many studies and scientific publications report on potentially beneficial effects of the lipophilic anti-oxidant vitamin E on cellular metabolic pathways. The present work presents data on the influence of tocopherol on different intracellular parameters of intact and living human skin fibroblasts by flow-cytometric measurements. The parameters analysed were the intracellular pH, representing cell metabolism and cell function, intracellular glutathione, representing one of the cell's own radical scavenger enzyme systems, membrane potential and cell viability. In order to cause large numbers of free radicals cells were UVB-irradiated prior to measurement. The results of the flow-cytometric measurements indicate that vitamin E has significant protecting effects on the measured biochemical parameters during oxidative stress. In the presence of the lipophilic radical scavenger a significant stabilizing effect on pH, intracellular glutathione levels and membrane potential could be observed. Furthermore, vitamin E administration was associated with increased cell viability after UVB irradiation.

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode, through the study of nu_mu to nu_tau oscillations. The apparatus consists of a lead/emulsion-film target complemented by electronic detectors. It is placed in the high-energy, long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. In August 2006 a first run with CNGS neutrinos was successfully conducted. A first sample of neutrino events was collected, statistically consistent with the integrated beam intensity. After a brief description of the beam and of the various sub-detectors, we report on the achievement of this milestone, presenting the first data and some analysis results., Submitted to the New Journal of Physics

Abstract

Zur Erfassung des Volumenflusses in grosen Blutgefasen wurde ein neues quantitatives Ultraschall-Dopplerverfahren entwickelt. Es basiert auf der Verwendung eines zweidimensionalen Arraytransducers, welcher die parallele, ortsaufgeloste Abtastung einer senkrecht zur Strahlrichtung stehenden Messchicht ermoglicht. Diese Anordnung erlaubt es, den Blutflus ohne Kenntnis des Einstrahlwinkels zu bestimmen. Daruber hinaus kann das zweidimensionale Geschwindigkeitsfeld in Intervallen von nur 10 bis 30 ms ermittelt werden. A novel ultrasonic quantitative Doppier procedure has been developed which allows for the measurement of real-time volume flow in large blood vessels. It makes use of a 2D array transducer, which enables parallel sampling of a measuring slice placed in normal position to the sound beam. With this arrangement, volume flow can be computed without measuring the angle of incidence. Moreover, the 2D velocity distribution can be assessed within intervals of 10 to 30 ms.

The ORPHEUS dark matter detector consists of 450 g superconducting tin granules with diameters of 28 μm and 36 μm. The detector has been operating in the shallow site of the underground laboratory in Bern (70 m.w.e). Preliminary results on WIMP detection sensitivity are presented.
