Currently, research on wind fields of U-shaped valleys is rarely reported, and anemometers or wind observation towers are usually used for field measurement, but the measured position is limited and the cost is high. In order to study the wind characteristics in a mountainous U-shaped valley, a long-range, all-weather, high-precision Wind3D 6000 lidar was placed at a bridge site located in a U-shaped valley. Then, according to the data effective ratio and wind speed, nearly 6 months of original data ranging from 0 m to 810 m were analyzed statistically. It was found that the spatio-temporal distribution of wind speed and direction is obviously not uniform, and the wind parameters are correlated among different virtual wind towers (VWTs). By classification, the effective data of midspan position is taken as the research object, and the wind speed profile is divided into three categories. Type-1 shows disorderly characteristics, Type-2 shows a linear relationship, and Type-3 shows a nonlinear relationship. The wind direction is consistent with the main wind direction at the bridge site and the average wind direction of different VWTs has a high consistency. The concept of wind-direction deflection rate is put forward to describe the variation of wind direction with height. These measured wind parameters could be used as a reference for bridge wind-resistant design.

An early stage in formation of a composite debris cone in the glacial trough of the Lochan na Lairige, on Ben Lawers, is 14C dated to 6398–6225 cal years BP. A large proportion of the debris cone comprises a structureless gravel with boulders, possibly deposited in a single event. Blanket peat formed on the debris cone surface at 3820–3496 cal years BP. Sediment slurries are recorded across the peat after this time, at c. 3950–c. 3100, c. 2000 and c. 1400 cal years BP, and at c. 1200–c. 1100 cal years BP. They were much less significant events. They can be related to periods of higher effective precipitation in the region.

Deep geothermal contributions can affect the thermal equilibrium of glacial systems, which can induce changes in their thermal state. These changes can be influenced by glacier dynamics and by the different ice flow velocities experienced over time, which dictate the static and dynamic interactions with glacial trough bedrock. To assess such interactions and to weight the effects of ice mass thermalisations on bedrock, 2D multistage numerical modelling was performed for Priestley Glacier (an outlet glacier) in the East Antarctic glacial system (northern Victoria Land), which has experienced extreme heat flux variations related to rifting and late Cenozoic volcanism. The thermal evolution of Priestley Glacier over the last ~500 ka was modelled considering the mutual contributions of local and deep thermal sources through a parametric variation in the geothermal heat flux. The ice mass velocity was indirectly taken into account by assuming an ice persistence time over the bedrock under timelled considering the mutual contributions of local and deep thermal sources through a parametric variation in the geothermal heat flux. The ice mass velocity was indirectly taken into account by assuming an ice persistence time over the bedrock under time-dependent modelling conditions. Ice thickness and geothermal heat fluxes, varying from 50 to 120 mW/m2, were conditions are strongly linked in determining the thermal state of the glacier base and consequently its impact on basal erosion. According to the adopted ice stationing levels, heat flux conditions not exceeding 70 mW/m2 are needed for preserving a dry-based glacier only assuming velocity conditions equal to or lower than those observed to date along Priestley Glacier. Assuming increased velocity conditions, the glacier sensitivity to heat fluxes decreases, and high to very high heat fluxes are not sufficient to cause glacier base transitions to wet states.

The Laurentian Channel is a deep glacial trough located in Atlantic Canada, extending from the St. Lawrence Estuary to the shelf edge between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. The outer Laurentian Channel close to its entrance at the shelf edge has been designated as an Area of Interest for the establishment of a Marine Protected Area, but baseline information was lacking. Here, a benthoscape map of the outer Laurentian Channel was generated using geomorphic features mapped using multibeam sonar (density of iceberg scours and pockmarks/iceberg pits, depth and slope) and ground truthed with surficial geology samples and underwater imagery. Individual surrogates and mapped patterns were compared to faunal patterns (infauna and epifauna) derived from the ground truthing. Water depth was the main predictor of infauna abundance and richness, while both depth and density of pockmarks/iceberg pits influenced community composition. Some benthoscape classes had close associations with distinct infauna, but diffuse patterns were mostly observed. Epifauna—namely sea pens—were most abundant at the confluence of multiple benthoscape classes.

Five large gravitational slope deformation features (GSDFs) in the Lookout Mountain-Tablelands region of western Newfoundland exemplify bedrock slope instabilities in eastern Canada. The Lookout Hills GSDF (8.3 km3) on Bonne Bay (glacial trough) may be the largest GSDF in eastern Canada. It appears to be a post-glacial feature, has vertical total displacement up to 100 m, and exhibits a complex arrangement of scarps and fissures. Four other large GSDFs occur along the walls of glacial troughs in the Tablelands of Western Newfoundland with estimated volumes between 1 and 2 km3. All five features are above steep slopes and have the potential to become catastrophic massive rock slope failures. While it is tempting to link the failure in all 5 GSDFs to the removal of laterally supporting bedrock or glacier ice during the late Pleistocene, the location of these deformations may simply relate to slope steepness. Non-glacial, first order controls on the deformation include changes in the effective shear strength and opening of fractures owing to Holocene permafrost thaw may have induced failure. No discernible movement has occurred in the Tablelands GSDFs in the last 50 years. Nevertheless, the Lookout Hills GSDF requires more detailed study to determine the potential for future movement as rapid collapse into the adjacent fjord may present significant risk to coastal residents, infrastructure and marine ecosystems.

Our understanding of the response of the Antarctic ice sheet to climate and ocean changes requires the improvement of current ice-atmosphere-ocean models and the accurate determination of boundary conditions such as ice thickness and extent at key time intervals, so that satellite gravity observations and isostatic models can be adjusted. However, large portions of the Antarctic margin remain understudied or lack suitable data. One key area where data are lacking, is the Sabrina Coast portion of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) margin where the Totten Glacier, which has the largest ice discharge in East Antarctica, is accelerating, thinning and loosing mass at high rates. In this work, we present the results of the first geological and geophysical marine survey to the continental shelf offshore of the Dalton Ice Tongue and Moscow University ice shelf, east of the Totten Glacier. The data presented include multibeam swath bathymetry and multichannel seismic, focusing on the sea floor morphology and sedimentary section above a regional angular unconformity separating pre- and post-Miocene glacial strata. Sea floor scouring and iceberg keel marks on the outer shelf, associated with gullies on the upper slope indicate that ice expanded in the past and grounded ~5 km from the shelf edge at ~450–500 mbsl, extending ~155 km north of the current Moscow University Ice Shelf. A nearly 1000 m deep area in the inner-middle shelf, oriented NW with paleo-ice flow direction indicated by mega scale glacial lineations (MSGL) and drumlins, is interpreted as a cross shelf glacial trough. A series of geomorphic associations on the north-eastern side of the glacial trough includes glacial lobes, grounding zone wedges (GZW), glacial lineations and transverse ridges, which indicates slower ice, grounding line stabilization and collapse. These geomorphic associations are organized in 4 four sets representing different past ice-flow configurations reflecting changes in ice flow direction, grounding line position, location of fast and slow ice areas, and retreat pattern. Some of the geomorphic features identified are compatible with the presence of an organized subglacial drainage, and others are with rapid grounding line collapse. A well-preserved series of GZWs occurring at different water depths implies they were formed during different glacial stages or cycles. The inferred diminishing ice thickness for consecutives GZWs indicates that the margin of the Antarctic ice sheet evolved to a less extensive coverage of the continental shelf through successive glacial stages or cycles. The identification of different ice flow configurations, evidence of subglacial water and past ice margin collapse indicates a dynamic ice sheet margin with varying glacial conditions and retreat modes. We observe that some of the described morphological associations are similar to those found in the Amundsen sea sector of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) where they are associated with ice sheet and ice stream collapse. Although further studies are needed to assess the precise timing and rates of the glacial processes involved, we conclude that there is enough evidence to support the hypothesis that the EAIS margin can behave as dynamically as the WAIS margin, especially during glacial retreat and icesheet margin collapse.

The main purpose of this study is to classify/characterize the landforms within a river basin using complex spatial information and GIS application to recognize and extort geomorphologic properties of Digital Elevation model with 30 m resolution. The landform classification is based on the Topographic position index (TPI) of the area under study—the Ithikkara and Kallada river basins, Southern Western Ghats, Kerala, India. The TPI generated was used for classifying the landscape to slope position index and landform classes. The slope position classes identified are Ridges/Hilltop/Canyon edge, Upper slope, Mid slope, Flat, Lower slope and Valley. The Landform classes includes (1) Canyons, deeply incised streams, (2) Midslope drainages, shallow valleys, (3) Upland drainages, headwaters, (4) U-shaped valleys, (5) Plains, (6) Open slopes, (7) Upper slopes, mesas, (8) Local ridges/hills in valleys, (9) Midslope ridges, small hills in plains and (10) Mountain tops, high ridges. 50.23% of the study area belongs to the slope position class—Ridges/Hilltop/Canyon edge. 30% of the study area is occupied by the landform class Canyons and deeply incised streams followed by Mountain tops and high ridges which covers 28.16%. The U shaped valleys represent 12.32% of the study area. The validation of landform classes is done by overlaying the stream network of the basin is into the landform classes, which is perfectly overlapping with the U shaped valleys of the landform classes. The classification of landform from the study can be used in applications related to precision agriculture, land use alteration studies where the most dominant factor is landform.

High-resolution sediment echosounder data combined with radiocarbon-dated sediment cores allowed us to reconstruct the Late Quaternary stratigraphic architecture of the Kveithola Trough and surrounding Spitsbergenbanken. The deposits display the successive deglacial retreat of the Svalbard-Barents Sea Ice Sheet. Basal subglacial till indicates that the grounded ice sheet covered both bank and trough during the Late Weichselian. A glaciomarine blanket inside the trough coinciding with laminated plumites on the bank formed during the initial ice-melting phase from at least 16.1 to 13.5 cal ka BP in close proximity to the ice margin. After the establishment of open-marine conditions at around 13.5 cal ka BP, a sediment drift developed in the confined setting of the Kveithola Trough, contemporary with crudely laminated mud, an overlying lag deposit, and modern bioclastic-rich sand on Spitsbergenbanken. The Kveithola Drift shows a remarkable grain-size coarsening from the moat towards the southern flank of the trough. This trend contradicts the concept of a separated drift (which would imply coarser grain sizes in proximity of the moat) and indicates that the southern bank is the main sediment source for the coarse material building up the Kveithola Drift. This depocenter represents, therefore, a yet undescribed combination of off-bank wedge and confined drift. Although the deposits inside Kveithola Trough and on Spitsbergenbanken display different depocenter geometries, time-equivalent grain-size changes imply a region-wide sediment-dynamic connection. We thus relate a phase of coarsest sediment supply (8.8–6.3 cal ka BP) to an increase in bottom current strength, which might be related to a stronger Atlantic Water inflow from the Southeast across the bank leading to winnowing and off-bank export of sandy sediments.

Glacial retreat from the North Cascade Range after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) at approximately 21 ka until the end of the Pleistocene at 11.6 ka was complex and included both continental and alpine glaciers. Alpine valley glaciers reached their maximum extent before 21.4 ka, then underwent a punctuated retreat to valley heads. In the south, beyond the reach of ice sheet glaciation, several end moraines were deposited after the LGM. Moraines marking a re-advance of alpine glaciers to 5 km below modern glaciers were deposited from 13.7 to 11.6 ka.The Cordilleran Ice Sheet flowed south from near 52° north latitude in British Columbia into the North Cascades. At its maximum size the ice sheet covered more than 500 km2 and had a surface elevation of 2200 m in upper Skagit valley. Deglaciation commenced about 16 ka by frontal retreat of ice flanking the mountains. Surface lowering eventually exposed regional hydrologic divides and stranded ice masses more than 1000 m thick in valleys. Isolated fragments of the ice sheet disintegrated rapidly from 14.5 to 13.5 ka, with the pattern of deglaciation in each valley controlled by valley orientation, topography, and climate. Like alpine glaciers to the south, retreat of the ice sheet remnants was slowed by millennial scale climate fluctuations that produced at least one large recessional moraine, and multiple lateral moraines and kame terraces from elevations of 200-1400 m in most valleys. Large volumes of glacial meltwater flowed through the North Cascades and was concentrated in the Skagit and Methow rivers. Outburst floods from deep proglacial lakes spilled across divides and down steep canyons, depositing coarse gravel terraces and alluvial fans at valley junctions.Climate at the LGM was characterized by a mean summer temperature 6 to 7 ºC cooler than today, and 40% lower mean annual precipitation. Persistence of this climate for thousands of years before the LGM caused a 750-1000 m decrease in alpine glacier equilibrium line altitudes (ELA). In the southern North Cascades at 16 ka, glacial ELAs were 500-700 m lower than today, and during advances from 13.7 to 11.6 ka alpine glacier ELAs were 200-400 m lower.

This is a synthesis of the glacial history of the northern Urals undertaken using published works and the results of geological surveys as well as recent geochronometric and remote sensing data. The conclusions differ from the classical model that considers the Urals as an important source of glacial ice and partly from the modern reconstructions. The principal supporting evidence for the conventional model – Uralian erratics found on the adjacent plains – is ambiguous because Uralian clasts were also delivered by a thick external ice sheet overriding the mountains during the Middle Pleistocene. Alternative evidence presented in this paper indicates that in the late Quaternary the Ural mountains produced only valley glaciers that partly coalesced in the western piedmont to form large piedmont lobes. The last maximum glaciation occurred in the Early Valdaian time at c. 70–90 ka when glacial ice from the Kara shelf invaded the lowlands and some montane valleys but an icecap over the mountains was not formed. The moraines of the alpine glaciation are preserved only beyond the limits of the Kara ice sheet and therefore cannot be younger than MIS 4. More limited glaciation during MIS 2 generated small alpine moraines around the cirques of the western Urals (Mangerud et al. 2008: Quaternary Science Reviews 27, 1047). The largest moraines of Transuralia were probably produced by the outlet glaciers of a Middle Pleistocene ice sheet that formed on the western plains and discharged across the Polar Urals. The resultant scheme of limited mountain glaciation is possibly also applicable as a model for older glacial cycles.

Glacial-geomorphic studies provide vital information to make inferences about the effect of glacial advance and retreat on the geomorphology of an area. In the present study, glacial-geomorphic landforms of the Thajwas glacial valley in the upper reaches of the Indus, Kashmir Himalayas were mapped using geospatial technology validated with GPS-based field observations and ground photography. The glacial-geomorphic landforms were digitized using ASTER DEM (30 m resolution), Landsat ETM+ satellite imagery (30 m resolution) and Google Earth (1 m resolution) data. Results showed that Google Earth imagery, supported by field validation, is very useful for the interpretation of glacial-geomorphic landscapes and relief features at micro- and meso-scales. However, morphometric characteristics of landforms are best obtained using DEM overlaid onto the Landsat ETM+ satellite data. Glaciers in the valley are presently confined along the south and southwestern slopes. However, the significant role played by glaciers in shaping the geomorphic landforms and their subsequent preservation within the scenic landscape under the Late Quaternary climatic conditions are remarkably evident. The glacial-geomorphic landforms, especially terminal moraine, glacial trough and cirques observed in the valley aided the reconstruction of palaeo-glacial setting of the area. Morphology, shape and location of terminal and lateral moraine ridges were used to establish the palaeo-glacial extents, glacial volume and the number of glacial advances of the Thajwas glacier. The maximum elevation of the lateral moraines was used to define the former Equilibrium-Line Altitude (ELA). The greater rock excavation to form a large valley during the last glacial maximum might have induced isostatic rock uplift/exhumation in the glacier source area. It is observed that the concomitant retreat of the north-facing glacial cirques has played an important role in expanding the glacial valley and limiting the topographic relief.

Evidence of widespread alpine glaciations during the Late Pleistocene in mid-latitudes has long attracted attention of researchers. However, there were no studies that contain absolute ages in the Lesser Caucasus despite the fact that it is one of the major glaciated regions in Eurasia. Here, we present first cosmogenic 36Cl surface exposure ages from the Karcal Mountains (41.24° N, 42.06° E, 3431 m a.s.l., above sea level) which is located in the most western part of the Lesser Caucasus in the northeastern Anatolia. In the Karcal Mountains, there are numerous valleys that have experienced significant glaciations since Late Pleistocene. We have investigated one of the largest valleys, the east-facing Karcal Valley, that hosts even a small (2926 m a.s.l.) recent glacier located at above 3000 m a.s.l. Fossil and recent rock glaciers along with lateral and recessional moraines exist in the valley. We conducted the study in two stages. First, we mapped the geomorphological units in the Karcal Valley in detail based on our field works and aerial photography. Later, we collected 10 rock samples from the fossil rock glacier and recessional moraines for cosmogenic 36Cl surface exposure dating. The results outline a glacial chronology that is typical of the Last Glacial Maximum. Although the maximum extent and timing of the glaciation is not exactly known as lateral and terminal moraines were not suitable for sampling, recessional moraines indicate that the Karcal Valley palaeoglacier deglaciation started at least 19.9 ± 1.2 ka ago. Fossil rock glacier samples were dated to 15.7 ± 1.3 ka. These quantitative results are first in the Lesser Caucasus and compatible with previous ages obtained from other valleys in the nearby Eastern Black Sea region, Anatolian and some of the European Mountains.

Quaternary valley fills and landforms in the Waqia valley of the Chinese Pamir were examined using geomorphic mapping, geomorphic and sedimentological analysis of landforms and sediments, and cosmogenic 10Be surface exposure dating. Six sets of moraines (M-1 to M-6) are identified and date to the penultimate or an older glacial cycle (M-1), penultimate glacial cycle (M-2), early last glacial and probably Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 4 (M-3), MIS 2 (M-4), Late Glacial (M-5), and early Holocene (M-6). Younger moraines are also present, but these were not examined in detail. Alluvial fans and outwash/river terraces are present throughout the valley. Four surfaces on alluvial fans and river terraces were dated to ~ 580 ka (T-1), ~ 120 ka (T-2), ~ 100 ka (T-3), and ~ 70 ka (T-4). Large landslide and lacustrine deposits are common within the valley fills and represent periods of major slope instability and possible damming of drainages. Glacial processes dominate the western side of the valley; landsliding is the leading process on its eastern side. Defining the nature and timing of landform formation in this valley highlights the punctuated nature of landform evolution in the Himalaya and Tibet and provides a framework for considering the abundant valley fill successions elsewhere in the orogen.

In the present study, the retreat of Kolahoi glacier was mapped from the satellite observations and historical maps supplemented by the extensive field observations to understand the recent deglaciation of the Kolahoi valley, Kashmir Himalaya, India. The glacier has retreated by 2.85 km during the last 157 years from 1857 to 2014 with an average retreat of about 18.2 m year−1; however, the glacier snout has shown higher recession during the last decade. The geomorphological evidence reveals glaciation of the Kolahoi valley during the Quaternary. These evidences include glacial till at Pahalgam and Aru besides terminal and lateral moraines at Lidderwat, Satlanjan and Kolahoi Gunj in the Kolahoi valley. The glacier has shrunk by 2.81 km2 during the last 51 years (1962–2013) losing an ice volume of 0.30 km3. The observed glacier changes were correlated with the climate data from PMIP3-CMIP5 models. The temperatures are predicted to increase almost ten times more than that observed during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The future temperature is predicted to rise between 0.18 °C and 0.61 °C per decade under RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5 respectively. The projected rise in the temperature, if realized, will have an adverse effect on the glaciers and would, in all likelihood, adversely affect the water availability for various sectors in the region.

Reconstruction based on the geomorphology, lateral moraine stratigraphy, and limited optical chronology indicate that the monsoon-dominated Kosa Valley experienced four glacial advances during the late glacial to late Holocene. The oldest and most extensive glaciation, which is termed as Raj Bank Stage-1 (RBS-1), is represented by the degraded moraine ridge. This glaciation remains undated; however, the chronology of outwash terrace gravel dated to 12.7 ± 1.3 ka indicates that the RBS-1 probably represents the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The second glacial advance (RBS-2) is preserved as a curvilinear lateral moraine and is dated to 6.1 ± 0.4 ka. The third glacial advance viz. RBS-3 is bracketed between 5.0 ± 0.5 and 4.0 ± 0.4 ka. Following this, the glacier receded in pulses that are represented by two distinct recessional moraines (RBS-3a and b). The forth glacial stage (RBS-4), which is dated between 2.2 ± 0.2 and 1.6 ± 0.2 ka, shows a pulsating recession and is represented by a prominent recessional moraine (RBS-4a). Whereas, presence of unconsolidated, poorly defined moraine mounds proximal to the glacier snout are ascribed as neoglacial advance corresponding to the Little Ice Age (LIA). With the limited chronometric data, we speculated that the glaciation was driven during the weak to moderate Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) aided by lowered temperature. Presence of recessional moraines associated with mid-Holocene glacial phase indicate that the monsoon-dominated glaciers respond sensitively to minor (sub-millennial scale) changes in temperature and precipitation conditions. The observations are broadly in accordance with the studies carried out in other monsoon-dominated valleys in the central Himalaya, implying that in ISM dominated regions, lowered temperature seems to be the major driver of glaciations during the late glacial to late Holocene.

Mountain glaciers are sensitive to climate change, especially in climatic transition zones. We investigated Late Quaternary glacial history in two valleys around the Karola Pass of the eastern Lhagoi Kangri Range, central Himalaya, using cosmogenic 10Be surface exposure dating. Four glacial events were dated to 0.36 ± 0.09 to 0.13 ± 0.02 ka (LIA = Little Ice Age), 2.5 ± 0.2 ka (Neoglacial), 9.7 ± 0.4 to 8.2 ± 0.4 ka (Early Holocene) and 23.1 ± 0.9 to 16.3 ± 0.7 ka (LGM-LG, LGM = Last Glacial Maximum; LG = Lateglacial). The extent of glacier coverage has reduced successively since the LGM-LG, when ice coverage was about 2.69 times larger than at present (∼2010 CE). Equilibrium line altitude (ELA) values dropped 360, 265, 195 and 120 m during the LGM-LG, Early Holocene, Neoglacial and LIA, respectively, compared to the present value. These glacial events were broadly synchronous with other areas in the central Himalaya. It is likely that climate cooling was the major driver of glacial fluctuations during the LGM-LG. Abrupt and short-lived cooling phases, as well as increased Indian monsoonal precipitation, resulted in glacial expansions or standstills during the Early Holocene. In addition, cold and wet climatic conditions were attributed to the Neoglacial and LIA glacial events in this area.

Apatite thermochronometry and synthetic maps of ages and rates for thermochronometric data are used to estimate the timing of incision of valley relief in the Andes. Central Patagonia offers a unique location to study the feedbacks between long-term climate, topography, and erosion due to the high relief and well-resolved mid-latitude glacial history. New apatite (U–Th)/He ages from two vertical transects and two 4He/3He release spectra in the fjord network around 47°S reveal fast cooling (15–30 °C/Ma) from ∼10 to 5 Ma. Samples currently at the surface cooled below ∼35 °C by ∼5 Ma, indicating slow cooling and little erosion in those regions since 5 Ma. We show that these very low-temperature thermochronometric data are useful indicators of changes in topography, and insensitive to deep thermal processes, such as migration of the Chile triple junction. Map-based predictions of the thermochronometric signatures of disparate topographic scenarios show the distribution of sample data necessary to resolve the timing of relief change. Comparisons to predicted cooling ages and rates indicate that our new apatite He data are most consistent with a pulse of early glacial incision, with much of the observed valley relief in Patagonia carved between 10 and 5 Ma. Early onset of glaciation in Patagonia is supported by glacial till with bracketing ages of 7.4 and 5 Ma. We therefore conclude that the observed thermochronometric signal of fast cooling from 10 to 5 Ma is likely due to an increase in valley relief coinciding with these early glaciations in the Andes. In other glaciated areas at lower latitudes, studies have found a dramatic increase in valley relief at ∼1 Ma. This timing has generated the idea that incision of glacial valleys may be related to the mid-Pleistocene transition, when the global glacial cycle changed from 40 to 100 ka periods. Our results from a higher latitude indicate an alternative, that glacial valleys incised rapidly after the onset of alpine glaciation.

We present new data on the Vichigasta Carboniferous paleovalley, a glacial trough crucial to understand the type of glaciation that affected western Gondwana during the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA). The filling of this paleovalley starts soon after the mid-Carboniferous glacial peak. Stage I represents pro-glacial lacustrine deposits with outwash, glacially rafted dropstones, mass transport deposits (MTDs) and turbidites of the trunk and a lateral tributary valley. Base-level drop created the scenario for Stage II outwash deltas and sandur deposits, with westward flow. Stage III represents a flooding at the base of the Bashkirian, characterized by typical transgressive dark shales and distal turbidites. Stage IV represents a highstand prograding turbidite wedge. We worked in a detailed terrain analysis, surveyed the scarce sedimentary record left and recovered a rich palynoflora from mudstones of Stage 3. The almost complete erosion of the fill allowed us to analyze the shape of this paleovalley and compare it to Olta and Malanzan ones. Vichigasta and Malanzan paleovalleys show similar size, a clear U-shape and regular and homogeneous width downslope, a requisite for bypass glacial paleovalleys carved in a subcrop of homogeneous composition (basement), which allow us to interpret them as outlet valleys. Olta paleovalley ranks as tributary as its capacity is only one-third of the others. We also identified a basement high over the Vichigasta valley floor that suggests the presence of a potential drumlin supporting our interpretation as a bypass glacial valley. This post-glacial flooding event is widely observed at other glacial valleys as the Olta-Malanzan herein analyzed and others like Las Lajas and Quebrada Grande. The new data from Vichigasta paleovalley reinforce the hypothesis of a large ice-sheet located to the east of the craton.

Well-preserved Late Glacial moraines in the Barenduo and Yuqiongqu valleys on the eastern slope of the Samdainkangsang Peak present an opportunity to reconstruct glacier extents and examine the character of the climate during the Late Glacial stage in the Nyaiqentanggulha Mountains. This study employs a coupled mass-balance and ice-flow model to reconstruct the glacier extents in the two valleys and assess the magnitudes of temperature and precipitation change during the Late Glacial period. Model results indicate that during the Late Glacial, the Barenduo valley contained an ice volume of 1.67×108 m3, with the equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) being ~5500 m asl; and the Yuqiongqu valley had an ice volume of 5.56×108 m3, with the ELA being ~5470 m asl. A climate scenario, temperature depression of 2.6–2.8°C and 60–70%, percent of modern (1981–2010) precipitation, can sustain both of the Late Glacial glacier extents in the two valleys. A 50% increase or decrease from modern precipitation would have been coupled with the respective Late Glacial temperature depressions of 1.6 and 3.0°C in the Barenduo valley, and 2.1 and 2.8°C in the Yuqiongqu valley.

Over the last glacial cycle, ice sheets and the resultant glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) rearranged river systems. As these riverine threads that tied the ice sheets to the sea were stretched, severed, and restructured, they also shrank and swelled with the pulse of meltwater inputs and time-varying drainage basin areas, and sometimes delivered enough meltwater to the oceans in the right places to influence global climate. Here I present a general method to compute past river flow paths, drainage basin geometries, and river discharges, by combining models of past ice sheets, glacial isostatic adjustment, and climate. The result is a time series of synthetic paleohydrographs and drainage basin maps from the Last Glacial Maximum to present for nine major drainage basins – the Mississippi, Rio Grande, Colorado, Columbia, Mackenzie, Hudson Bay, Saint Lawrence, Hudson, and Susquehanna/Chesapeake Bay. These are based on five published reconstructions of the North American ice sheets. I compare these maps with drainage reconstructions and discharge histories based on a review of observational evidence, including river deposits and terraces, isotopic records, mineral provenance markers, glacial moraine histories, and evidence of ice stream and tunnel valley flow directions. The sharp boundaries of the reconstructed past drainage basins complement the flexurally smoothed GIA signal that is more often used to validate ice-sheet reconstructions, and provide a complementary framework to reduce nonuniqueness in model reconstructions of the North American ice-sheet complex.

Buried valleys are characteristic features of glaciated landscapes and their deposits host important aquifers worldwide. Understanding the stratigraphic architecture of these deposits is essential for protecting groundwater and interpreting sedimentary processes in subglacial and ice-marginal environments. The relationships between depositional architecture, topography and hydrostratigraphy in dissected, pre-Illinoian till sheets is poorly understood. Boreholes alone are inadequate to characterize the complex geology of buried valleys, but airborne electromagnetic surveys have proven useful for this purpose. A key question is whether the sedimentary architecture of buried valleys can be interpreted from airborne electromagnetic profiles. This study employs airborne electromagnetic resistivity profiles to interpret the three-dimensional sedimentary architecture of cross-cutting buried valleys in a ca 400 km2 area along the western margin of Laurentide glaciation in North America. A progenitor bedrock valley is succeeded by at least five generations of tunnel valleys that become progressively younger northward. Tunnel valley infills are highly variable, reflecting under-filled and over-filled conditions. Under-filled tunnel valleys are expressed on the modern landscape and contain fine sediments that act as hydraulic barriers. Over-filled tunnel valleys are not recognized in the modern landscape, but where they are present they form hydraulic windows between deep aquifer units and the land surface. The interpretation of tunnel valley genesis herein provides evidence of the relationships between depositional processes and glacial landforms in a dissected, pre-Illinoian till sheet, and contributes to the understanding of the complex physical hydrology of glacial aquifers in general. The existence of plateau ice fields in the Southern Carpathians has long been suggested due to the widespread presence of the Borascu surface in the region. The Borascu surface is a peneplain consisting of flat plateaus in the elevation range of 1800–2200 m a.s.l. It is present throughout the Southern Carpathians with the most typical appearance in the Godeanu Mountains. These plateaus could have served as ice accumulation sites during the Pleistocene glaciations as they were well above the steady-state equilibrium-line altitude (ELA 0 ). Direct geomorphological evidence on the existence of plateau ice fields, and thus well founded reconstructions, are absent due to the lack of glacial landforms on the plateaus. In order to test the existence of plateau ice fields a previous geomorphological survey and theoretical ice surface profiles, based on a steady-state perfectly plastic ice flow model, were used. Based on these methods maps and three-dimensional surface models of the former glaciers were created. The ELA 0 s of the paleoglaciers were estimated by the accumulation-area ratio (AAR) method. According to our results, three major ice fields on the central plateaus and several smaller ice fields on wide saddles were present in the Godeanu Mountains during the maximal glaciation. The ice fields fed numerous surrounding valley glaciers. Several independent valley and cirque glaciers, completely separated from the ice fields, were also present further from the central mass of the mountain range. The average ELA 0 of the northern, 1855 ± 2 m a.s.l., and the southern, 1700 ± 2 m a.s.l., glaciers differed greatly. We suggest that the surprisingly high average ELA 0 of the northern glaciers was mostly caused by the missing lower sections of these paleoglaciers from our reconstructions, due to the destroyed terminal glacial landforms. However, the terminal glacial landforms are quite well preserved in the southern valleys. Thus, the average ELA 0 of the southern paleoglaciers was suitable to correlate the maximal glaciation of the Godeanu Mountains with the maximal glaciation of the neighbouring Retezat Mountains.

A set of confined sediment drifts (the “Kveithola Drift”) is located in the inner part of the trough. In general, drift deposits are commonly characterized by high lateral continuity, restricted occurrence of hiatuses and relatively high accumulation rates, and thus represent excellent repositories of paleo-environmental information. We provide for the first time a detailed morphological and seismostratigraphic insight into this sediment drift, which is further supported by some preliminary lithological and sedimentological analyses. The complex morphology of the drift, imaged by combining all available multibeam data, includes a main and a minor drift body, two drift lenses in the outer part of the trough, more or less connected drift patches in the innermost part and small perched sediment patches in a structurally-controlled channel to the north. The seismic (PARASOUND) data show that the main and minor drift bodies are mainly well-stratified, characterized by sub-parallel reflections of moderate to high amplitude and good lateral continuity. The reflectors show an abrupt pinch-out on the northern edge where a distinct moat is present, and a gradual tapering to the south. Internally we identify the base of the drift and four internal horizons, which we correlate throughout the drift. Two units display high amplitude reflectors, marked lensoidal character and restricted lateral extent, suggesting the occurrence of more energetic sedimentary conditions. Facies typical for contourite deposition are found in the sediment cores, with strongly bioturbated sediments and abundant silty/sandy mottles that contain shell fragments. These characteristics, along with the morphological and seismic information, suggest a strong control by a bottom current flowing along the moat on the northern edge of the drift. Though both Atlantic and Arctic waters are known to enter the trough, from the west and the north respectively, brine-enriched shelf water (BSW) produced during winter and flowing westward in the moat, is suggested to be responsible for the genesis of the Kveithola Drift. The formation of BSW is inferred to have started around 13 cal ka BP, the onset of drift deposition, suggesting that conditions leading to atmospheric cooling of the surface waters and/or the presence of coastal polynyas and wind or floating ice shelves have persisted on the western Barents Shelf since that time. The units inferred to have been deposited under more energetic sedimentary conditions (tentatively dated to the Younger Dryas and to 8.9–8.2 cal ka BP) are suggestive of stronger BSW formation. In general, we infer that variations in the bottom current regime were mainly related to BSW formation due to atmospheric changes. They could also have been a response to successive episodes of grounded and sea ice retreat that allowed for a first limited, later open shelf current, which progressively established on the western Barents Sea shelf, The research cruise MSM30 CORIBAR and this study were partly funded through the MARUM DFG-Research Center/Cluster of Excellence “The Ocean in the Earth System” as part of MARUM project SD-2. Fluvial, glacial, and estuarine deposits in the Delaware Valley record the response of the Delaware River to glaciation, sea-level change, and glacioisostasy during the Quaternary. Incision following an early Pleistocene glaciation created the present valley, which is inset into a Pliocene strath and fluvial plain. Middle and upper Pleistocene and Holocene deposits were laid down in this inset valley. Estuarine terraces in the lower valley and bayshore at + 20 m (probably Marine Isotope Stage [MIS] 11), + 8 m (MIS 5e), and + 3 m (MIS 5a or c), and a fluvial deposit that correlates to offshore MIS 3 marine deposits at − 20 m are at elevations consistent with glacioisostatic models. Successive incisions during lowstands in the middle and late Pleistocene lengthened, deepened, and narrowed the channel in the lower valley and shifted the channel westward in Delaware Bay. During MIS 2 glaciation, from 25 to 18 ka, the Delaware was diverted to the Hudson Shelf Valley by glacioisostatic tilting. Most glacial sediment was trapped in fluvial-lacustrine valley fills north of the terminal moraine. Incision of the valley fill was accomplished during the early stage of rebound, between 17 and 12 ka. Drainage to the Delaware shelf was restored between 15 and 13 ka as the forebulge collapsed. During incision, multiple postglacial terraces formed where the valley was perpendicular to rebound contours and so was steepened and elevated northward; and a single terrace formed where the valley paralleled the contours, and there was no differential elevation or steepening. About 65% of the original volume of MIS 2 glacial sediment remains in the main valley, and most of the eroded volume is in the channel in the lower valley beneath Holocene estuarine fill. Little glacial sediment reached the Delaware or Hudson shelf. Overbank deposition on the lower postglacial terrace and modern floodplain spans the Holocene. The volume of Holocene sediment in the estuary and bay yields a basinwide denudation rate of about 20 m/my.

This work describes a young extrusive massif in the uppermost reaches of the Chegem River (Bashilauzu-su River), which had been considered as a feeder of the great sequence of Upper Pliocene rhyolite ignimbrites of the Verkhnechegemskaya caldera. The Upper Pleistocene age of the stratum, extrusive origin of automagmatic breccias and fluidolites, as well as its difference from rhyolites of the caldera are proven. The Bashilsky swell, located in the Late Pleistocene glacial trough, is evidence of young volcanism in this area, which has not been previously proposed.

Mountain glaciers advance and retreat primarily in response to changes in climate. Establishing the timing and magnitude of mountain glacier fluctuations from geological records can thus help to identify the drivers and mechanisms of past climate change. In this study, we use cosmogenic 3He surface exposure dating and tephrochronology to constrain the timing of past glaciation on Tongariro massif in central North Island, New Zealand (39°S). Exposure ages from moraine boulders show that valley glaciation persisted between c. 30–18 ka, which coincides with the global Last Glacial Maximum. Reinterpretation of moraine tephrostratigraphy, using major element geochemistry analysis, shows that ice retreat and climatic amelioration at the last glacial termination was well underway prior to 14 ka. The equilibrium line altitude in central North Island, during the Last Glacial Maximum, was c. 1400–1550 m above sea level, which is c. 930–1080 m lower than present. Considering the uncertainties in the glacial reconstruction and temperature lapse rates, we estimate that this equilibrium line altitude lowering equates to a temperature depression of 5.6 ± 1.1 °C, relative to present. Our mapping and surface exposure dating also show evidence for an earlier period of glaciation, of similar magnitude to the Last Glacial Maximum, which culminated prior to 57 ka, probably during Marine Isotope Stage 4. Good agreement between the timing and magnitude of glacier fluctuations in central North Island and the Southern Alps indicate a response to a common climatic forcing during the last glacial cycle.

Successively smaller glacial extents have been proposed for continental Eurasia during the stadials of the last glacial period leading up to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). At the same time the large mountainous region east of Lake Baikal, Transbaikalia, has remained unexplored in terms of glacial chronology despite clear geomorphological evidence of substantial past glaciations. We have applied cosmogenic Be-10 exposure dating and optically stimulated luminescence to establish the first quantitative glacial chronology for this region. Based on eighteen exposure ages from five moraine complexes, we propose that large mountain ice fields existed in the Kodar and Udokan mountains during Oxygen Isotope Stage 2, commensurate with the global LGM. These ice fields fed valley glaciers (>100 km in length) reaching down to the Chara Depression between the Kodar and Udokan mountains and to the valley of the Vitim River northwest of the Kodar Mountains. Two of the investigated moraines date to the Late Glacial, but indications of incomplete exposure among some of the sampled boulders obscure the specific details of the post-LGM glacial history. In addition to the LGM ice fields in the highest mountains of Transbaikalia, we report geomorphological evidence of a much more extensive, ice-cap type glaciation at a time that is yet to be firmly resolved. The Piec Stawow Polskich-Roztoka Valley in the High Tatras (Western Carpathians) features typical alpine-type relief with a deeply incised glacial trough and large, compound trough head cirque. The prominent hypsographic maximum in the valley (1680–2000 m) along with a broad cirque bottom had provided a vast space for recording glacial and periglacial landforms, specifically the most recent Lateglacial advances. The valley has been intensively studied before in the context of glacial chronology. In this paper, we re-establish the post-Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) glacial chronology of the valley via detailed geomorphologic mapping, equilibrium line altitude (ELA) reconstruction, and Schmidt hammer (SH) dating, along with a critical review of previously published cosmogenic exposure age data ( 36 Cl) and lacustrine sediment chronology. Our results indicate that the first four of the five distinguished Lateglacial stages (Roztoka I–III, Pusta I) occurred before the Bolling/Allerod (B/A) interstadial; thus, virtually the entire valley became deglaciated in course of the Oldest Dryas cold phase. A distinct reorganization of deglacial patterns from valley-type to marginal-type occurred before B/A warming when the ELA increased above the valley hypsographic maximum concentrated at the cirque bottom elevation. It shows that noticeable deglaciation step can be caused due to topographic reason with a minimal climate forcing. This points also to an important role of glaciated valley hypsography in regulating the distribution of moraines which is rarely taken into account in paleoglaciological reconstructions. We infer that glaciers vanished in the Tatra Mountains during the B/A interstadial. Later, a renewed advance during the Younger Dryas (Pusta II) formed a nearly continuous, festoon shaped pattern of moraines and rock glaciers in close distance to cirque backwalls. Furthermore, we discus some paleoenvironmental significance of the geomorphological record in the valley, as well, the applicability of SH dating in constructing glacial chronology.

Glacial landforms are well preserved on Taibai Mountain (3767 m), the main peak of the Qinling mountain range located south of the Loess Plateau and east of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The timing and extent of Quaternary glaciation in the study area is important for reconstructing Quaternary environmental change however numerical ages for glaciation in this study area have not previously been well resolved. Using terrestrial in situ cosmogenic nuclides we dated four samples collected from two glacially eroded rock steps in the upper part of a valley near the main peak, in an area previously identified as having been occupied by ice during the Taibai glaciation. The 10Be results are all late glacial in age: 18.6 ± 1.1 ka, 16.9 ± 1.0 ka, 16.9 ± 1.1 ka and 15.1 ± 1.0 ka. The spatial pattern of ages in the valley suggests fast retreat, with horizontal and vertical retreat rates estimated to be on the order of 0.4 and 0.09 m a−1, respectively. A simple extrapolation of these retreat rates from the ages at the two sample sites suggests that the glacier retreat began during Last Glacial Maximum and that glaciers disappeared from the main peak by about 15 ka.

Landslide dams form when a landslide obstructs narrow and steep valleys in mountainous areas. Since these dams may fail over a short time and cause secondary geological disasters in the downstream area, the stability of such dams must be assessed in an accurate and timely manner. The three-dimensional (3-D) geometry of a landslide dam, which is one of the essential indices for stability analyses, is highly influenced by the landslide dam formation conditions, including the sliding surface dip-angle and the valley topography. However, few studies have focused on the correlation between the 3-D geometry and formation conditions of a landslide dam. A photogrammetric system was used to develop a laboratory apparatus to simulate the formation process of a landslide dam and construct a digital model for the 3-D geometry of a landslide dam in a U-shaped valley. Then, a series of experiments were designed to systematically investigate the formation process and the 3-D geometry of landslide dams under different combinations of valley bed inclinations (0, 4°, 8°, and 12°) and sliding surface dip-angles (30°, 45°, 60°, and 75°). The results indicate that the sliding surface dip-angle has a significant effect on the length and height of a landslide dam, whereas the valley bed inclination has a limited effect on the length and height compared with its effect on the relative angles of a landslide dam. In addition, the cross-sectional profiles of landslide dams can be classified into three categories, namely, symmetric, asymmetric and flat shapes, and these profiles are predominantly affected by the sliding surface dip-angle instead of the valley bed inclination. Subsequently, a mathematical model for predicting the 3-D geometry of a landslide dam was presented according to the experimental results, and it was verified by the experimental data and 42 historical cases of landslide dams. Based on the proposed model, the predicted 3-D geometry of the Tangjiashan landslide dam triggered by the Wenchuan earthquake of 2008 was consistent with its actual geometry, which confirmed the reliability of the prediction model in practical applications. The findings of our study contribute to the establishment of evidence-based disaster prevention and mitigation measures for landslide dams.

The morphology of the Alpine and adjacent landscapes is directly related to glacial erosion and associated sediment transport. Here we report the effects of glacio-hydrologic erosion on bedrock topography in the Swiss Plateau. Specifically, we identify the presence of subsurface valleys beneath the city of Bern and discuss their genesis. Stratigraphic investigations of more than 4,000 borehole data within a 430 km2-large area reveal the presence of a network of >200 m-deep and 1,000 m-wide valleys. They are flat floored with steep sided walls and are filled by Quaternary glacial deposits. The central valley beneath Bern is straight and oriented towards the NNW, with valley flanks more than 20° steep. The valley bottom has an irregular undulating profile along the thalweg, with differences between sills and hollows higher than 50–100 m over a reach of 4 km length. Approximately 500 m high bedrock highlands flank the valley network. The highlands are dissected by up to 80 m-deep and 500 m-broad hanging valleys that currently drain away from the axis of the main valley. We interpret the valleys beneath the city of Bern to be a tunnel valley network which originated from subglacial erosion by melt water. The highland valleys served as proglacial meltwater paths and are hanging with respect to the trunk system, indicating that these incipient highland systems as well as the main gorge beneath Bern formed by glacial melt water under pressure.

Glaciers create some of Earth’s steepest topography; yet, many areas that were repeatedly overridden by ice sheets in the last few million years include extensive plateaus. The distinct geomorphic contrast between plateaus and the glacial troughs that dissect them has sustained two long-held hypotheses: first, that ice sheets perform insignificant erosion beyond glacial troughs, and, second, that the plateaus represent ancient pre-glacial landforms bearing information of tectonic and geomorphic history prior to Pliocene–Pleistocene global cooling (~3.5 Myr ago). Here we show that the Fennoscandian ice sheets drove widespread erosion across plateaus far beyond glacial troughs. We apply inverse modelling to 118 new cosmogenic 10Be and 26Al measurements to quantify ice sheet erosion on the plateaus fringing the Sognefjorden glacial trough in western Norway. Our findings demonstrate substantial modification of the pre-glacial landscape during the Quaternary, and that glacial erosion of plateaus is important when estimating the global sediment flux to the oceans., The contribution of surface processes to the long-term evolution of plateau surfaces on high-latitude passive margins is poorly understood. Here, the authors show that recent glacial erosion on plateaus in western Scandinavia was widespread and may have contributed substantially to the sediment flux to the oceans.

17 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, 1 supplementary table, Labile organic carbon (LOC) dynamics (i.e., of recently produced, planktonic material) and sediment dynamics were studied in the seabed using naturally occurring C and Pb measurements in the region where the Larsen Ice Shelves A and B were floating almost two decades ago. A non-steady-state diagenetic model was used to estimate sediment mixing coefficients as well as LOC fluxes to the seabed and LOC turnover times (i.e., mean residence times) in a suite of 14 sediment cores from the continental shelf, including a glacial trough. At four of the stations, cores were collected during 2007 and 2011 cruises, enabling a time-series approach for understanding the evolution of sedimentary processes and LOC dynamics in the deposits below a collapsed ice shelf. Sediment mixing coefficients, based on non-steady-state Pb profiles, varied between 0.01 cm y and 1.6 cm y in these post-ice shelf sediments. These values were similar to those found in polar deep-sea environments, where sedimentary conditions are less dynamic than in shallower provinces. LOC, whose abundance decreased uniformly with depth, was detected to depths ranging from 2 to 16 cm, with LOC seabed inventories varying from 1.5 to 22 mg LOC cm. Excess Pb and LOC fluxes were relatively uniform across the study area suggesting that similar particle fluxes have taken place within the Larsen system since the disintegration of the various ice shelves. The LOC mean residence time at the different stations varied from 3 y to >60 y. The C approach, calculating LOC content based on a two-end member model with planktonic C as the labile carbon end member, most closely correlated with the lipid content of the sediment, which has been considered one of the best descriptors of reactive organic matter readily available to benthic consumers. Detailed field mapping of glacial and paraglacial landforms supported by optical and radiocarbon dating is used to reconstruct the history of late Quaternary glaciation and landform evolution in the Trans Himalayan region of the upper Dhauliganga valley. The study identifies four events of glaciations with decreasing magnitude which are termed as Purvi Kamet Stage -Ia (PKS-Ia), PKS-Ib, PKS-II, PKS-III and PKS-IV respectively. The oldest PKS-Ia and Ib are assigned the Marine Isotopic Stgae-3 (MIS-3), the PKS-II to the Last Glacial Maximum (MIS-2), PKS-III dated to 7.9 ± 0.7 ka, and the PKS-IV is dated to 3.4 ± 0.3 ka and 1.9 ± 0.2 ka respectively. The largest valley glaciations viz. the (PKS-Ia) occurred during the strengthened summer monsoon corresponding to the MIS-3, following this, the recessional moraines (PKS-Ib) represent the gradual decline in summer monsoon towards the later part of MIS-3. The valley responded to the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), which is represented by the PKS-II moraine implying the influence of strengthened mid-latitude westerlies during the LGM. The post-LGM deglaciation was associated with the onset of summer monsoon and is represented by the deposition of four distinct outwash gravel terraces. The early Holocene PKS-III glaciation occurred around 7.9 ± 0.7 ka and broadly coincides with the early Holocene cooling event (8.2 ka). This was followed by the deposition of stratified scree deposits and the alluvial fan (between 5.5 ka and 3 ka) during the mid to late Holocene aridity. This was followed by marginal re-advancement of the valley glacier (viz. PKS-IV) during the late Holocene cool and moist climate. Although glaciers respond to a combination of temperature and precipitation changes, however during the Holocene it seems that temperature played a major role in driving the glaciation.

Mt Chelmos in the Peloponnesus was glaciated by a plateau ice field during the most extensive Pleistocene glaciation. Valley glaciers radiated out from an ice field over the central plateau of the massif. The largest glaciations are likely to be Middle Pleistocene in age. Smaller valley and cirque glaciers formed later and boulders on the moraines of these glacial phases have been dated using 36Cl terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide exposure dating. These ages indicate a Late Pleistocene age with glacier advance/stabilization at 40?30 ka, glacier retreat at 23?21 ka and advance/stabilization at 13?10 ka. This indicates that the glacial maximum of the last cold stage occurred during Marine Isotope Stage 3, several thousand years before the global Last Glacial Maximum (Marine Isotope Stage 2). The last phase of moraine-building occurred at the end of the Pleistocene, possibly during the Younger Dryas.

During the late Quaternary, the Southern Alps of New Zealand experienced multiple episodes of glaciation with large piedmont glaciers reaching the coastal plains in the west and expanding into the eastern alpine forelands. Here, we present a new 10Be exposure age chronology for a moraine sequence in the Waimakariri Valley (N-Canterbury), which has long been used as a reference record for correlating glacial events across New Zealand and the wider Southern Hemisphere. Our data indicate that the Waimakariri glacier reached its maximum last glaciation extent prior to ∼26 ka well before the global last glaciation maximum (LGM). This was followed by a gradual reduction in ice volume and the abandonment of the innermost LGM moraines at about 17.5 ka. Significantly, we find that during its maximum extent, the Waimakariri glacier overflowed the Avoca Plateau, previously believed to represent a mid-Pleistocene glacial surface (i.e. MIS 8). At the same time, the glacier extended to a position downstream of the Waimakariri Gorge, some 15 km beyond the previously mapped LGM ice limit. We use a simple steady-state mass balance model to test the sensitivity of past glacial accumulation to various climatic parameters, and to evaluate possible climate scenarios capable of generating the ice volume required to reach the full local-LGM extent. Model outcomes indicate that under New Zealand's oceanic setting, a cooling of 5 °C, assuming modern precipitation levels, or a cooling of 6.5 °C, assuming a one third reduction in precipitation, would suffice to drive the Waimakariri glacier to the eastern alpine forelands (Canterbury Plains). Our findings demonstrate that the scale of LGM glaciation in the Waimakariri Valley and adjacent major catchments, both in terms of ice volume and downvalley ice extent, has been significantly underestimated. Our observation that high-lying glacial surfaces, so far believed to represent much older glacial episodes, were glaciated during the LGM, challenges the conventional geomorphic model of glaciation in New Zealand where the vertical arrangement of glacial landform-associations is used to assign successively older glaciation ages.

We present twenty-four new cosmogenic isotope ( 36 Cl) surface exposure ages from erratic boulders, moraine boulders and glacially eroded bedrock that constrain the late Weichselian to Holocene glacial history of the Drangajokull region, northwest Iceland. The results suggest a topographically controlled ice sheet over the Vestfirðir (Westfjords) peninsula during the last glaciation. Cold based non-erosive sectors of the ice sheet covered most of the mountains while fjords and valleys were occupied with erosive, warm-based ice. Old 36 Cl exposure ages from highlands and mountain plateaux (L8; 76.5 ka and H1; 41.6 ka) in combination with younger erratic boulders (L7; 26.2 and K1–K4; 15.0–13.8 ka) superimposed on such surfaces suggest the presence of non-erosive ice over uplands and plateaux in the Vestfirðir peninsula during the last glaciation. Glacially scoured terrain and erratic boulders yielding younger exposure ages (L1-L6; 11.3–9.1 ka and R1, R6-R7; 10.6–9.4 ka) in the lowland areas indicate that the valleys and fjords of the Vestfirðir peninsula were occupied by warm-based, dynamic ice during the last glaciation. The deglaciation of mountain Leirufjall by 26.2 ka BP suggests that ice thinning and deglaciation of some mountains and plateaux preceded any significant lateral retreat of the ice sheet. Subsequently this initial ice thinning was followed by break-up of the shelf based ice sheet off Vestfirðir about 15 ka BP. Hence, the new exposure ages suggest a stepwise asynchronous deglaciation on land, following the shelf break-up with some valleys and most of the highlands, ice free by 14–15 ka BP. The outermost moraine at the mouth of Leirufjorður is dated to 9.3 ka BP, and we suggest the moraine to be formed by a glacier re-advance in response to a cooler climate forced by the reduced Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation at around 9.3 ka BP. A system of moraines proximal to the 9.3 ka moraine in Leirufjorður as well as a 9.4 ka deglaciation age in the coastal area of Reykjarfjorður suggest that an extensive ice cap persisted over the eastern Vestfirðir peninsula at least until c. 9 ka BP.

We present a glacial geomorphological map at a scale of 1:200,000 of the Maidika region in the southeastern part of the central Tibetan Plateau covering 13,600 km2. Based on the 90 m resolution SRTM elevation model, the 30 m resolution ASTER GDEM elevation model, and the Landsat ETM+ satellite imagery of 30/15 m resolution, we have mapped glacial valleys, marginal moraines, glacial lineations, and hummocky terrain. Glacial landforms occur frequently and indicate extensive past glaciation with alpine style valley glaciers as well as more extensive ice fields. Of particular interest is the presence of glacial lineation swarms, which is unusual for the Tibetan Plateau glacial landform record. Based on the distribution of glacial landforms, we present a generalized maximum glacial extent reconstruction covering 6045 km2 or 44% of the map.

The glacial dead-ice origin of the DeKalb mounds in DeKalb County, Illinois, USA, is advanced in this study by discussing it within the context of late Wisconsinan glacial karst. Glacial karst is glacial dead-ice topography that resembles carbonate bedrock karst topography. The only difference here is that thermo-erosion or melting of ice by groundwater causes glacial karst, while dissolution of carbonates by groundwater causes bedrock karst. For example, bedrock karst such as haystack hills, dolines and entranceless caves analogously match up to stagnant glacial ice blocks with supraglacial ice pits and entranceless glacial caves. Entranceless bedrock caves are caves with no opening (entranceway) that is big enough for a human, yet contain water and/or accumulations of silt and clay. Although stagnant glacial ice blocks and supraglacial ice pits have been discussed in the literature, entranceless glacial caves is an undeveloped concept which is expounded in this study. An entranceless glacial cave is actually a subglacial/englacial, water-filled cavity formed by thermo-erosion due to active-layer groundwater/talik piping laterally seeping out of the adjoining terrain and into a body of glacial ice, as seen in modern glaciers of Antarctica. This type of water-filled cavity can also be classified as a subglacial or englacial lake. The study also discusses relationships to embryonic DeKalb mounds such as: why a localized part of the continental ice sheet degenerated into stagnant ice blocks; and the Wisconsinan creation of one or more steep depressions in the till plain underlying a DeKalb mound.

We present a sensitivity analysis of the isochron approach of Goehring et al. (2013) for paired measurements of in situ14C/10Be from glacially sculpted bedrock surfaces. This analysis tests how sensitive the resulting exposure durations from this technique are to both the number of samples analyzed and their locations along a glacial trough transect, using a dataset from Goehring et al. (2011) as a test case. We present a glacial geomorphological map (1:825,000) of the Parlung Zangbo Valley in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau based on Google Earth imagery and the 30 m ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model (ASTER GDEM). The mapped region covers 2.9 × 104 km2, including abundant glacial landforms such as glacial valleys, marginal moraines (including terminal moraines and lateral moraines), and hummocky moraines. Glacial valleys are distributed mainly above 2100 m a.s.l. with lengths from 1 to 130 km. Multiple marginal moraines occur along the glacial valleys, indicating the presence of multiple glacial events. The lowest moraines are distributed mainly at the mouth of each valley between 2400 and 4000 m a.s.l. Hummocky moraines are mainly distributed in the two main tributary valleys: the Bodui Zangbo Valley and the Yigong Zangbo Valley. One ice-dammed paleolake was mapped with a surface area of 12.5 km2. The mapped glacial features (including contemporary glaciers) cover 1.2 × 104 km2, about 40% of the mapped area, representing the minimum extent of maximum glaciation. This map provides a useful data set for reconstructing the timing and extent of paleoglaciations in this area.
