Introduction: As at 2019, Nigeria was ranked the fourth highest HIV burden in the world. There is varied geographical HIV prevalence in Nigeria. The progress made is inequitable across geographical locations and sub-populations (18). Benue state has the second highest HIV prevalence in Nigeria. In 2018, about 35,623 people living with HIV (PLHIV) were yet to commence antiretroviral treatment (ART) in the state, accounting for an estimated ART coverage gap of 11% out of the combined gap of 320,921 in the country. To close this gap, the Benue ART surge (BAS) was implemented. The aim of this study was to describe the BAS strategic approaches and demonstrate progress in expanding ART access for PLHIV in Benue State, Nigeria. Methods: BAS was implemented in 252 health facilities from May 2019 to September 2021. Data were collected and reported using an Excel-based dashboard and electronic medical records. The trend of HIV case identification, ART initiation, viral load suppression rate, and rate of interruption in treatment during the BAS period was then described and analyzed. Results: Out of 893,462 clients reached, 6.7% ( n = 60,297) were diagnosed with HIV and 99.8% ( n = 60,236) were initiated on ART. HIV case identification per month increased by 467% from 650 at baseline to a peak of 3685 in August 2020, and then declined by 35% to 2380 in September 2021. All new HIV-infected patients (100%) were linked to ART. Viral load testing coverage and viral load suppression rate increased from 30% (43,185/126,004) and 84% ( n = 36,165/43,185) at baseline to 95% ( n = 193,890/204,095) and 96% (185,785/193,890), respectively. Conclusion: Implementation of the BAS improved access to comprehensive HIV services in Benue State. The increase in HIV case identification and ART initiation significantly reduced the HIV treatment gap in the state. To fast track the attainment of UNAIDS 95-95-95 goals, lessons learnt from the BAS should be adapted and scaled up in the national HIV program in Nigeria.

This study evaluated some geophysical and physicochemical characteristics of soil and groundwater resources in Sapele, Delta Sate of Nigeria using various standard techniques. The results of the resistivity data shows that a high resistive plume with resistivity > 12,000 Ohm-m has penetrated the soils beyond 21m beneath the surface in most parts of the surveyed area. The water samples shows high acidity with pH values in the range 4.6-5.1. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is low 46.40- 47.98mg/l and conductivity ranges from 72.80-78.8 μS/cm, There is no incidence of heavy metal pollution, only Iron is high (0.772-0.915mg/l). Abstract This study aimed to achieve an in vitro quantification of the effects of composition and formulation factors on the killing rates of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. The killing rates of 85% ethyl alcohol (ET) and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) were studied under different conditions such as pH, electrolyte concentration, or inclusion of herbal extracts (cucumber, carrot, and aloe vera), a quaternary ammonium compound, or thickener over different time intervals. Changes in the activities were retested after 3 months as an indication of stability. From two-way ANOVA, both the time of exposure and the sanitizer type affected the activity against Staphylococcus aureus (P = 0.001 for both alcohols), whereas for Escherichia coli, time of exposure was significant (P = 0.027), while sanitizer type was less significant (P = 0.063). Extreme pHs, the presence of ions, and the inclusion of additives such as benzalkonium chloride (BAC), plant extracts, or carbomer impacted the 3-month activity of the samples differently. Important differences existing in the activities of ET and IPA, as a function of formulation factors or use conditions have been quantified using in vitro methods. Formulations should best be tailored for particular purposes and the all-purpose hand sanitizer may not exist. Graphic Abstract

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) account for one of the major reasons for most hospital visits and the determination of the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of uropathogens will help to guide physicians on the best choice of antibiotics to recommend to affected patients. This study is designed to isolate, characterize, and determine the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of the pathogens associated with UTI in Anambra State Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Anambra State, Nigeria. Clean catch urine samples of inpatient and outpatient cases of UTI were collected and bacteriologically analyzed using standard microbiological procedures. Antibiogram was done by the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. The most prevalent isolates were S. aureus (28%), E. coli (24.6%), and S. saprophyticus (20%). The antibacterial activities of the tested agents were in the order of Augmentin < Ceftazidime < Cefuroxime < Cefixime < Gentamicin < Ofloxacin < Ciprofloxacin < Nitrofurantoin. It was found that all the organisms were susceptible in varying degrees to Nitrofurantoin, Ciprofloxacin, and Ofloxacin. It was also observed that all the bacterial species except Streptococcus spp. have a Multiple Antibiotic Resistance Index (MARI) greater than 0.2. For empiric treatment of UTIs in Awka locality, Nitrofurantoin, Ciprofloxacin, and Ofloxacin are the first line of choice.

Flour mixes obtained by the addition of banana pulp in various proportions (0-50%) to maize 'extracts' were evaluated for some quality characteristics. All the mixes had significantly lower values of crude protein, fat and water-holding capacity. Gelation, however, significantly increased the water-holding capacity in all cases. The ash content, titratable acidity and total sugars increased tremendously with an increase in the level of banana substitution. While both Adam's consistency values and equilibrium moisture content decreased with an increase in the level of banana substitution, the syneresis values did not show any consistent pattern. The consistently low moisture content and the results of the moisture sorption isotherms suggest a good storage stability of all the mixes, especially when kept under conditions of water activity of 0.30 and below, and their possible suitability for baked products.
