Cavitation erosion, as a mechanical effect of destruction, constitutes a complex and critical problem that affects the safety and efficiency of the functioning of engineering components specific to many fields of work, the most well-known being propellers of ships and maritime and river vessels, seawater desalination systems, offshore oil and gas drilling platforms (including drilling and processing equipment), and the rotors and blades of hydraulic machines. The main objective of the research conducted in this paper is to experimentally investigate the phenomenology of this surface degradation process of maritime ships and offshore installations operating in marine and river waters. To reduce cavitation erosion of maritime structures made from Duplex stainless steels, the study used the deposition by welding of layers of metallic alloys with a high capacity for work hardening. The cavitation tests were conducted in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials standards. The response of the deposited metal under each coating condition, compared to the base metal, was investigated by calculating the erosion penetration rate (MDER) through mass loss measurements over the cavitation duration and studying the degraded zones using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and hardness measurements. It was revealed that welding hardfacing with austenitic manganese alloy contributes to an approximately 8.5–10.5-fold increase in cavitation erosion resistance. The explanation is given by the increase in surface hardness of the coated area, with 2–3 layers of deposited alloy reaching values of 465–490 HV5, significantly exceeding those specific to the base metal, which range from 260–280 HV5. Laser beam remelting is a relatively simple and highly effective technique for the physical modification of surfaces to improve resistance to cavitation erosion. In this study, we investigated the effect of laser remelting on the surface of cast stainless steel with 0.40% C, 25% Cr, 20% Ni, and 1.5% Si on cavitation erosion behavior in tap water. The investigation was conducted using a piezoceramic crystal vibrator apparatus. Base laser beam parameters were carefully selected to result in a defect-free surface (no porosity, material burn, cracks) with hardness capable of generating better resistance to cavitation erosion. The experimental results were compared with those of the reference material. Surface morphology and microstructure evolution after cavitation tests were analyzed using an optical metallographic microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and hardness tests to explore the mechanism of improving surface degradation resistance. The conducted research demonstrated that surfaces modified by laser remelting exhibit a 4.8–5.1 times greater increase in cavitation erosion resistance due to the homogenization of chemical composition and refinement of the microstructure, while maintaining the properties of the base material. Ti alloys have been widely used in biomedical applications due to their special properties. They have specific properties such as biocompatibility, biofunctionality and high corrosion resistance, which enable them to function inside the human body. Among them, Ti-6Al-4V is probably one of the most widely used alloys for implants. However, aluminum and vanadium ions have been reported to cause problems and adverse reactions in the human body over long periods. Thus, in the present study, Ti–15Zr–10Nb alloy synthesized by high vacuum melting was manufactured and characterized by different techniques. The phase composition was determined by XRD. This showed the presence of α and β phases in the alloy, consistent with the microstructural study. From a microstructural point of view, the alloy shows lamellar and acicular structures with α-grain boundaries. Vickers microhardness measurements showed an increased hardness compared to Ti-CP. Furthermore, the electrochemical behavior was evaluated using HCl as an electrolyte. The obtained results were compared to Ti-CP tested in the same electrochemical condition. The studies indicated that Ti-CP presents a nobler electrochemical behavior than Ti-15Zr-5Nb. Thus, despite the very good corrosion properties of Ti-15Zr-5Nb in a simulated oral environment and Ringer's solutions, the present study reveals that the Ti-15Zr-5Nb alloy has lower corrosion resistance in aggressive media when compared to Ti-CP. Brazing is a joining process that involves melting a filler metal and flowing it into the joint between two closely fitting parts. While brazing is primarily used for joining metals, it can also be adapted for certain coating deposition applications. The present study investigates the microstructure and corrosion behavior and sliding wear resistance of WC (Tungsten Carbide)-CoCr-Ni reinforced Co-based composite coatings deposited onto the surface of AISI 904L stainless steel using a vacuum brazing method. The primary objective of this experimental work was to evaluate the influence of WC-based particles added to the microstructure and the properties of the brazed Co composite coating. The focus was on enhancing the sliding wear resistance of the coatings while ensuring that their corrosion resistance in chloride media was not adversely affected. The morphology and microstructure of the composite coatings were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and phase identification by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The SEM analysis revealed in the coating the presence of intermetallic compounds and carbides, which increase the hardness of the material. The sliding wear resistance was assessed using the pin-on-disk method, and the corrosion properties were determined using electrochemical measurements. The results obtained showed that as the WC particle ratio in the Co-based composite coating increased, the mechanical properties improved, the alloy became harder, and the tribological properties were improved. The evaluation of the electrochemical tests revealed no significant alterations of the manufactured composite in comparison with the Co-based alloys. Duplex stainless steels are materials with high performance under mechanical stress and stress corrosion in chloride ion environments. Despite being used in many new applications such as components for offshore drilling platforms as well as in the chemical and petrochemical industry, the automotive industry, etc., they face issues of wear and hardness that limit current applications and prevent the creation of new use opportunities. To address these shortcomings, it is proposed to develop a hardfacing process by a special welding technique using a universal TIG source adapted for manual welding with a pulsed current, and a manganese austenitic alloy electrode as filler material. The opportunity to deposit layers of manganese austenitic steel through welding creates advantages related to the possibility of achieving high mechanical characteristics of this steel exclusively in the working area of the part, while the substrate material will not undergo significant changes in chemical composition. As a result of the high strain hardening rate, assisted mainly by mechanical twinning, manganese austenitic alloys having a face-centered cubic crystal lattice (f.c.c) and low stacking fault energy (SFE = 20–40 mJ/m2) at room temperature, exhibit high wear resistance and exceptional toughness. Following cold deformation, the hardness of the deposited metal increases to 465 HV5–490 HV5. Ni-based alloys are among the materials of choice in developing high-quality coatings for ambient and high-temperature applications that require protection against intense wear and corrosion. The current study aims to develop and characterize NiCrBSi coatings with high wear resistance and improved adhesion to the substrate. Starting with nickel-based feedstock powders, thermally sprayed coatings were initially fabricated. Prior to deposition, the powders were characterized in terms of microstructure, particle size, chemical composition, flowability, and density. For comparison, three types of powders with different chemical compositions and characteristics were deposited onto a 1.7227 tempered steel substrate using oxyacetylene flame spraying, and subsequently, the coatings were inductively remelted. Ball-on-disc sliding wear testing was chosen to investigate the tribological properties of both the as-sprayed and induction-remelted coatings. The results reveal that, in the case of as-sprayed coatings, the main wear mechanisms were abrasive, independent of powder chemical composition, and correlated with intense wear losses due to the poor intersplat cohesion typical of flame-sprayed coatings. The remelting treatment improved the performance of the coatings in terms of wear compared to that of the as-sprayed ones, and the density and lower porosity achieved during the induction post-treatment had a significant positive role in this behavior. Without proper post-processing (often using flame, furnace, laser remelting, and induction) or reinforcements' addition, Ni-based flame-sprayed coatings generally manifest moderate adhesion to the substrate, high porosity, unmelted particles, undesirable oxides, or weak wear resistance and mechanical properties. The current research aimed to investigate the addition of ZrO2 as reinforcement to the self-fluxing alloy coatings. Mechanically mixed NiCrBSi-ZrO2 powders were thermally sprayed onto an industrially relevant high-grade steel. After thermal spraying, the samples were differently post-processed with a flame gun and with a vacuum furnace, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy showed a porosity reduction for the vacuum-heat-treated samples compared to that of the flame-post-processed ones. X-ray diffraction measurements showed differences in the main peaks of the patterns for the thermal processed samples compared to the as-sprayed ones, these having a direct influence on the mechanical behavior of the coatings. Although a slight microhardness decrease was observed in the case of vacuum-remelted samples, the overall low porosity and the phase differences helped the coating to perform better during wear-resistance testing, realized using a ball-on-disk arrangement, compared to the as-sprayed reference samples. In order to modify the surface of light metals and alloys, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a useful electrochemical technique. During the oxidation process, by applying a positive high voltage greater than the dielectric breakdown value of the oxide layer, the formation of a ceramic film onto the substrate material is enabled. The resulting surface presents hardness, chemical stability, biocompatibility, and increased corrosion wear resistance. The current study aims to investigate the corrosion resistance and tribological properties of PEO-modified coatings on titanium substrates produced by applying either direct or pulsed current in a silicate-alkaline electrolyte. In this way, a uniform TiO2 layer is formed, and subsequently, electrophoretic deposition of hydroxyapatite particles (HAP) is performed. The morpho-structural characteristics and chemical composition of the resulting coatings are investigated using scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis and X-ray diffraction. Dry sliding wear testing of the TiO2 and HAP-modified TiO2 coatings were carried out using a ball-on-disc configuration, while the corrosion resistance was electrochemically evaluated at 37 °C in a Ringer's solution. The corrosion rates of the investigated samples decreased significantly, up to two orders of magnitude, when the PEO treatment was applied, while the wear rate was 50% lower compared to the untreated titanium substrate.
