Out of the Late Holocene sea-level highstand at ca. 2.7 ka, seven Late Pleistocene and Late-Middle Pleistocene palaeo-sea-levels (PSL) are today recorded along the coast of the Atlantic Atlas of Morocco: 1) as near-shore dunes (NSD) deposits, records of two MIS 2 and MIS 3 PSL near 0 m a.s.l. or just below, at 28 and ca. 40 ka; 2) records of three MIS 5a, 5c and 5e PSL between zero and + 8 m a.s.l.; 3) records of two MIS 7 and MIS 9 PSL above + 10 m a.s.l. and near + 20 m a.s.l.. All datable records are placed in their morpho-lithostratigraphic units (UMS) and discussed with regard to their location, palaeo-environmental and tectonic implications. En dehors du haut niveau marin de l’Holocène récent à environ 2,7 ka, sept paléorivages (PSL) du Pléistocène supérieur et de la fin du Pléistocène moyen sont enregistrés aujourd’hui le long de la côte de l’Atlas atlantique marocain : 1) autour ou un peu en-dessous du zéro actuel, des dépôts de dunes littorales (NSD) enregistrent deux PSL des stades isotopiques 2 et 3, à 28 et environ 40 ka ; 2) entre zéro et + 8 m, des enregistrements de trois PSL rapportés aux sous-stades 5a, 5c et 5e ; au-dessus de + 10 m et autour de + 20 m, des enregistrements de deux PSL des stades 7 et 9. Tous les enregistrements datables sont placés au sein de leurs unités morpho-lithostratigraphiques (UMS) et discutés en fonction de leur localisation et de leurs implications paléo-environnementales et tectoniques.

The Moselle piracy : New chronological datas from U/th datings of speleothems. The Moselle piracy is one of the most important changes of the hydrographie network in Lorraine (France). For a long time, this phenomenon has been presumed to be relatively recent (at the end of the Middle Pleistocene) because of the well preserved fluvial morphologies and deposits. With new relations between the above ground and subterranean parameters in the piracy area , the capture has been dated from 300 ky by the U/Th method on speleothem. This evaluation reveals an earlier time for the phenomenon, and is more precise, than those proposed up to now. The latter were derived from the North-european glacial chronology and one thermoluminescence date obtained in the downstream valley of Meuse. In fact, the improvements in absolute datings, through different methods and U/Th in particular, lead geomorphologists to abandon the simple relation between the glacial-interglacial periods and the accumulation-erosion processes in rivers., La capture de la Moselle constitue l'une des réorganisations hydrographiques majeures de la Lorraine. C'est essentiellement sur la base de formations fluviatiles superficielles bien conservées que cette capture a été rapportée à la fin du Pléistocène moyen, ce qui est très jeune pour un événement géomorphologique de cette envergure. Par le biais de déterminations et de corrélations chronologiques entre différents paramètres et indicateurs épigés et hypogés de la région de la capture, un âge minimum de 300 000 ans issu de datations U/Th sur spéléothème est ici proposé pour caler ce détournement hydrographique. Ceci se révèle être plus ancien que toutes les évaluations temporelles jusqu'alors proposées, que ce soit en fonction du schéma chronologique glaciaire nord-européen ou sur la base d'une datation par thermoluminescence effectuée sur la Meuse aval. De toute évidence, le développement des datations absolues, par diverses méthodes et notamment celle très fiable de l'U/Th, amène à remettre en question les estimations chronologiques relatives des terrasses fluviatiles rapportées aux périodes glaciaires-interglaciaires., Losson Benoît, Quinif Yves. Dans les régions arides, la datation des travertins conduit à établir une chronologie de périodes humides. Des travertins de cascade, fluviatiles et hydrothermaux ont été échantillonnés à la bordure nord du Sahara marocain et datés par la méthode des isotopes de l’Uranium, à la fois par spectrométrie alpha et spectrométrie de masse (TIMS). Les résultats indiquent que les constructions de travertins se produisent avant le stade isotopique marin (SIM) 11, pendant le SIM 9-8, secondairement durant le SIM 5 et principalement durant le SIM 3 et le SIM 2. La relation entre les travertins et les phases humides se vérifie à l’échelle du Quaternaire. À l’échelle plus détaillée des périodes récentes, les constructions s’effectuent autour de 50, 30 et 15 ka BP, apparemment en relation avec des refroidissements de l’Atlantique subtropical oriental. Mais le dispositif géomorphologique induit dans chaque cas des différences dans la construction travertineuse : réponse plus tardive des tertres hydrothermaux à l’accroissement pluviométrique, aridification plus précoce des travertins fluviatiles. Les travertins des régions arides continentales sont ainsi des dépôts discontinus incluant des réponses climatiques à la fois planétaires et régionales. In arid countries, the dating of travertines has led to establish a chronology of humid phases. Waterfall, fluvial and hydrothermal Quaternary travertines were sampled at the northern border of the Moroccan Sahara and dated by the U-series and TIMS methods. The results indicate that travertine formation occurred prior to MIS 11, during MIS 9-8, scarcely during MIS 5, and mainly during MIS 3 and MIS 2. The relationship between travertines and wet phases is verified at the Quaternary time scale. At a short recent scale, the constructions occurred about 50, 30 and 15 ka BP, seemingly linked to subtropical eastern Atlantic cooling. But the geomorphological setting induces in each case differences in travertine growth, such as a later response of the hydrothermal mounds to the rainfall increase, or an earlier drought in the fluvial deposits. As a result, travertines are discontinuous deposits in arid continental environments, including both global and regional distinct signals.

In this paper we offer a preview of the excavations of a Palaeolithic site in the southern Iberian Peninsula: the Cueva del Ángel (Lucena, Córdoba). Since 1995, year in which its archaeological potential was discovered, there have been four excavation campaigns and there is now a 5- meter deep stratigraphic sequence. Together with the on-site excavations, there is also the technological and typological analysis of the lithic industry, on-going zoological study, as well as a geological approach, both of the cavity and the sedimentary deposit that filled it. The fauna and lithic industry recovered, together with the absolute dating offered by the stratigraphic sequence, allow us to conclude that we are studying a Middle and Old Upper Pleistocene, which makes this cave an exceptional site in the Iberian Peninsula., En este artículo presentamos un avance de los trabajos realizados en un nuevo yacimiento paleolítico del sur de la Península Ibérica: la Cueva del Ángel (Lucena, Córdoba). Desde el descubrimiento en 1995 de su potencial arqueológico, se ha excavado durante cuatro campañas y, hasta el momento, presenta un corte estratigráfico de unos 5 metros de potencia. Paralelamente se analiza la tecnología y tipología, la fauna, la geología de la cavidad y su relleno sedimentario. La fauna, la industria lítica y las dataciones absolutas sitúan el yacimiento en el Pleistoceno medio y el Pleistoceno superior antiguo; lo que hace que esta cueva sea excepcional en la Península Ibérica.
