Purposeof Review: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are becoming more and more important in daily diets around the world; in some cases, they can account for as much as 60% of daily energy intake. Epidemiological evidence suggests that this shift toward high levels of food processing may be partially responsible for the global obesity epidemic and the rise in the prevalence of chronic diseases., Recent Findings: Few prospective studies have examined the relationship between UPF consumption and cancer outcomes. According to currently available information, UPFs may increase the risk of cancer due to their obesogenic properties and exposure to substances that can cause cancer, such as certain food additives and pollution from product processing. The complex relationship between obesity and cancer involves factors such as immune dysregulation, altered adipokine and sex hormone levels, abnormal fatty acid metabolism, extracellular matrix remodeling, and chronic inflammation. Addressing cancer risk associated with UPF consumption could involve a multifaceted approach, including consumer behavior modification programs and robust public health regulations aimed at enhancing food environments. Improved knowledge of the potential dual negative impacts of UPFs on the environment and cancer risk is one of the priority areas we identify for future research and policy implications. Various approaches could be used to prevent cancers associated with UPF consumption, such as consumer behavior change programs and stricter public health regulations needed to improve the food environment. This review examines for the first time the potential role of UPFs in cancer risk associated with obesity, exploring underlying biological mechanisms and identifying key areas for future research and policy action, including the dual environmental and health impact of UPFs., Competing Interests: Declarations. Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are foods that have undergone extensive industrial processing with the addition of various substances in order to make them more tasty, eye-catching, and easy to consume. UPFs are usually rich in sugars, salt, and saturated fat, whereas they lack essential nutrients. The aim of this review is to elaborate upon the current evidence associating overconsumption of UPFs with the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We will discuss data interconnecting UPFs and T2DM risk and will further describe specific ingredients that have been suggested to increase this risk. In addition, we will thoroughly explain how additives, such as emulsifiers or sweeteners, or other compounds formed during manufacturing, such as acrylamide and acrolein, and during packaging, such as bisphenol-A, are proposed to be implicated in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and T2DM.

Obesity has emerged as a global epidemic with far-reaching health complications, including its role as an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Increasing evidence suggests that obesity contributes to CKD through multiple mechanisms, including chronic inflammation, hemodynamic alterations, insulin resistance, and lipid accumulation. These processes can culminate in histopathological changes collectively referred to as obesity-related glomerulopathy (ORG). This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge regarding the prevalence, clinical manifestations, and pathophysiology of ORG. Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of identifying key biomarkers that facilitate the early detection of ORG. Finally, we explore emerging therapeutic strategies that offer promise in mitigating this growing global health crisis.

Our goal is to further elucidate the potentially devastating outcomes of increased consumption of UPFs in children in terms of adipose indices and metabolic features., Recent Findings: The widespread consumption of UPFs in children has been associated with abnormal metabolic parameters, such as increased body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglyceride levels, along with increased fasting plasma glucose and insulin resistance. Factors such as lower family socioeconomic status, lower parental educational status, religious preferences, lower costs and widespread availability of UPFs, as well as extensive advertising, all seem to be involved in a vicious cycle promoting overconsumption of UPFs. As UPFs and childhood obesity are interconnected, it is of the utmost importance to implement potential preventive interventions in order to promote public health and decrease the incidence of the obesity tide among children and adolescents., Competing Interests: Declarations. Sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) is defined as the development of AKI in the context of a potentially life-threatening organ dysfunction attributed to an abnormal immune response to infection. SA-AKI has been associated with increased mortality when compared to sepsis or AKI alone. Therefore, its early recognition is of the utmost importance in terms of its morbidity and mortality rates. The aim of this review is to shed light on the pathophysiological pathways implicated in SA-AKI as well as its diagnostics and therapeutics. In this review, we will elucidate upon serum and urinary biomarkers, such as creatinine, cystatin, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), proenkephalin A 119-159, interleukin-6, interleukin-8 and interleukin-18, soluble toll-like receptor 2 (sTLR2), chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) and chemokine C-C-motif 14 (CCL14). In addition, the role of RNA omics as well as machine learning programs for the timely diagnosis of SA-AKI will be further discussed. Moreover, regarding SA-AKI treatment, we will elaborate upon potential therapeutic agents that are being studied, based on the pathophysiology of SA-AKI, in humans and in animal models.

Pyogenic spondylodiscitis is a primary infection of the intervertebral disc and is a rare entity. Here, we describe the case of a 64-year-old male patient, a professional breeder, who attended the Emergency Department with sciatica and back pain that was worsening for a week. The patient had no history of surgery or trauma. The patient had poor oral hygiene. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan showed lumbar spondylodiscitis, and blood cultures revealed Streptococcus constellatus . The patient was initially treated with vancomycin but due to renal failure deterioration, the treatment was changed to daptomycin for 8 weeks. During hospitalization, he endured renal injury and nosocomial respiratory tract infection. The patient was discharged with no further complications. Follow-up revealed improvement of neurological signs. In our case, it seems that poor oral hygiene was the cause of bacteremia, which underlies the importance of a good oral health status in immunocompromised patients not only to prevent but also to successfully eliminate any dental source of infection. S. constellatus is an extremely rare pathogen and to our knowledge only two other cases of pyogenic spondylodiscitis are reported in the literature.
