Abstract

The contemporary youth cohort is confronted with many transformative dynamics and adversities, which have garnered significant attention in the media landscape. Cultivating dynamic literacies (Potter & McDougall, 2017) emerges as imperative for navigating through the deluge of information and discerning falsehoods, particularly when news is accessed through unfiltered social media channels (Herdzina & Lauricella, 2020, Krumsvik, 2023, Santos et al., 2023). Against this backdrop, the YOMEDIA project - Youngsters’ Media Literacy in Times of Crisis - has been funded by the European Media and Information Fund established by the European University Institute and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The primary objective of this endeavor was to address these concerns through the conceptualization and implementation of a hybrid game focusing on misinformation/disinformation, and information literacy in times of crisis. Video games have acquired a fresh perspective following the experiences endured during the pandemic, notably concerning personal well-being and social connection (Cauberghe et alii, 2021, Kriz, 2020, Ohannes et alii, 2021). This pivotal shift prompted YO-MEDIA to advocate for enhancing young people's media literacy through ludic tools and languages. Games and video games foster a more critical and participatory engagement among youth, facilitated by narrative immersion, identification mechanisms with characters or stories, interactive elements coupled with the allowance for failure, and the necessity to formulate strategies applicable beyond the gaming realm (Moro et al., 2022). Abstract

The widespread dissemination of contradictory information through various media platforms can increase anxiety and confusion among younger generations. This highlights the need to promote Media Literacy (ML) skills, enabling them to evaluate online information's validity critically. Video game-based learning can be valuable in this context, fostering active learning and critical thinking. Therefore, developing and sharing innovative resources like interactive content and video games is crucial to enhancing young people's ML skills and resilience to disinformation. The YO-MEDIA project, involving three universities in Italy, Portugal, and Spain and a journalist association, aims to develop ML in young people during times of crisis (e.g., pandemics and wars) through game-based learning strategies and professional training. The project carried out 29 semi-structured interviews in the partner countries with various stakeholders to understand perspectives on media design practices and ML formulation for young people in crises. These interviews aimed to collect education and media professionals' insights on promoting ML and critical thinking among youth during crises. It also seeks to gather best practices and understand these professionals' challenges when fostering ML among youth. This study's findings suggest that the interviewees deem ML vital for distinguishing accurate information from misinformation during crises, especially relevant for young individuals. Essential skills for these young people include critical thinking, filtering information, and recognizing online threats. Effective strategies involve operating within digital environments frequented by young people, encouraging critical thinking, and nurturing collaboration. Professionals face challenges such as a lack of training, engaging young people's attention, and keeping pace with digital environments. The interviewees also emphasized the importance of ML training for informal educators and media professionals. They recommended Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for their flexibility and accessibility. According to the interviewees, an ML game should involve research, interpretation, and decision-making processes and be accessible to young people with disabilities. They identified several ML projects and resources, including multimedia labs, youth parliaments, and critical thinking tools. This study contributes to developing games that promote critical thinking and ML in young people. Abstract

While the lockdown significantly reduced face-to-face meetings, video conferencing platforms began to be used widely to leverage different sectors, such as academia. In this scope, scientific events such as seminars and conferences were migrating to the online environment. However, online events usually do not dedicate time to group activities, decreasing the chances of building academic and professional partnerships and decreasing social interactions and networking opportunities that naturally occur in face-to-face events. This paper aims to present a series of dynamics carried out using Zoom and Mentimeter platforms within the scope of the “ehSemi” Conference to create interaction between people and encourage potential scientific networking, which happens in face-to-face conferences and is significantly lost online. Furthermore, the paper discusses the role of timing, and moderators, among other essential factors that boost the social components in the online environment. Despite, given the current pandemic situation, studying the new role of videoconferencing and interactions therein appears timely and interesting, limitations and ideas for future work are presented to improve results and provide details that were not covered in this work. published

Abstract

The object of research in the work is charged magnetic conductors of electric machines and transformers. Laminated magnetic wire together with windings are important active parts of electric machines that participate in electromechanical energy conversion. The reliability of the entire machine is mainly determined by the actual condition of the inter-sheet insulation. Violation of the insulation causes parasitic eddy current circuits, which increases the specific losses, and also significantly affects the additional heating of the magnet wire and winding. The normative method for determining the quality of the charged core is the assessment of specific losses at a frequency of 50 Hz and an induction of 1 T, which should not exceed 2.5–4 W/kg. To determine local damage to the core, methods of local heating and fixation of overheating sites are used, which should not exceed 45 °C compared to the main part of the magnetic core. In the work, a two-dimensional field mathematical model of a charged magnetic circuit is developed. This makes it possible to carry out electromagnetic calculations in a near-real magnetic conductor, taking into account the variability of magnetic permeability, hysteresis, and the interaction of currents in adjacent plates of the magnetic conductor with each other, the so-called “proximity effect”.On the basis of the developed models, graphs of current distribution and distribution of magnetic induction in one, two and three sheets were obtained. The resulting graphs show how the effect of current displacement increases with increasing frequency, where at a frequency of 100 kHz the magnetic induction density in the middle of the sheet goes to zero. The results of the research confirm the correctness of the model development in comparison with the classical calculation models also given, which allows them to be used for further research of high-frequency processes in charged magnetic circuits of electric machines. Abstract

This study presents a methodology for assessing the accessibility of two mobile apps, Hominere and Smart Break, using guidelines, automatic validation tools, and manual analysis. Using automated evaluation tools, including WAVE, Access Monitor, SortSite Accessibility Checker and Validator revealed common accessibility issues such as missing or incorrectly labeled buttons, non-descriptive links, and inaccessible images. Supplementing the automated assessment, manual evaluation with TalkBack unveiled specific accessibility challenges that automated tools may overlook, including intricate user interactions and issues related to visual design and layout. This evaluation and subsequent analysis identified viable solutions to enhance inclusivity and accessibility within the application. Furthermore, the study affirms that the chosen accessibility evaluation strategy is not only effective but also transferable, offering a valuable framework for assessing accessibility in a wide range of mobile applications. Abstract

In this article, it is intended to analyze and evaluate the Hominere mobile application regarding its accessibility through manual assessment and automatic tools, guided by the accessibility criteria defined by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). The automated evaluation with the support of various tools (WAVE - Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool, Access Monitor and SortSite Accessibility Checker and Validator) allowed the authors to identify common accessibility problems, such as missing or mislabeled buttons, non-descriptive links, or inaccessible images. The manual evaluation was complemented with TalkBack allowed the identification of specific accessibility problems that automated tools cannot detect, such as complex user interactions or problems related to visual design and layout. With the evaluation and its analysis, it was possible to identify solutions for the problems presented to make the application more inclusive and accessible, and also to verify that the selected accessibility strategy evaluation is effective and appropriated and can be replicated in the accessibility evaluation of other mobile apps.
