The main goal of the article is to present the concept of using a simulation environment when designing an advanced fibre-optic seismometer (FOS) using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) computing system. The first part of the article presents the advanced requirements regarding the FOS principle of operation, as well as the measurement method using a closedloop operation. The closed-loop control algorithm is developed using the high-level language C++ and then it is synthesised into an FPGA. The following part of the article describes the simulation environment developed to test the operation of the control algorithm. The environment includes a model of components of the measurement system, delays, and distortions in the signal processing path, and some of the measurement system surroundings. The article ends with a comparison of simulation data with measurements. The obtained results are consistent and prove correctness of the methodology adopted by the authors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper contains a discussion of striking similarities between influential philosophical concepts of the past and the approaches currently employed in selected areas of computer science. This paper presents a new application of modern numerical algorithms, such as neural and probabilistic networks, for monitoring pressure system installations. Theoretical background as well as custom implementation of the algorithms is presented, and a complete system for monitoring high-pressure, fluid-filled (HPFF) cables is described. Detection of fluid leaks in pipe-type cable installations is important for both environmental and operational reasons. A new application of modern numerical algorithms, such as neural and probabilistic networks, for monitoring pressure system installations has been recently presented by the authors. This approach led to the development of a complete system for monitoring high-pressure, fluid-filled cables. During the initial system implementation, a need arose for the detection of very small leaks. To meet this need, the detection algorithms were revised and new features were implemented. Despite its recent growth in popularity, actively heated clothing still lacks the ability to cope with demanding user scenarios. As many of these deficiencies stem from an absence of automatic control, the authors propose a novel approach using a set of sensors embedded in the clothing to provide data about thermal comfort. Available sensors suffer from a lack of accuracy, as for practical reasons, they cannot be attached to the skin, whose temperature is usually used as a comfort indicator. To determine the magnitude of the problem, the authors conducted experiments, and a thermal model was proposed based on experimental findings; the output from the model was compared with the experimental reference data for three different upper body undergarments. The overall accuracy was found to be good: in most cases, the difference between the computed and reference skin temperatures did not exceed 0.5 °C. Furthermore, the model does not rely on unrealistic assumptions regarding the availability of parameters or measurement data. Our findings demonstrate that it is possible to create a thermal model that, when used for input data processing, allows undergarment temperature to be converted to skin temperature, allowing for automatic control of heating insets. The paper presents nondestructive method of investigation of multilayer structures containing conducting material, such as thyristor structures. The proposed method is based on induction heating of examined object and infrared detection of temperature field. Infrared images of examined thyristor structures registered with the help of this method are presented. Short discussion of advantages and disadvantages of the method is also included. The main benefit from usage of the proposed method is extremely short time of registration. Therefore, this method can be applied in industry for quick quality assessment of thyristor structures. Moreover, the source of excitation does not dazzle the infrared detector. Obtained preliminary results confirm usability of the method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
