A dynamic light scattering study of director-layer fluctuations in the anti-ferroelectric smectic-ZA phase of the ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal DIO is reported. The dynamics are consistent with the distinctive feature of the ZA phase that the smectic layers form parallel to the axis of molecular orientational order (director). A model is developed to describe quantitatively the dispersion of the fluctuation relaxation rates. The model is based on a specialization of the elastic free energy density of the smectic-C phase to the case of 90 degree director tilt, a "first-order" approximation of the viscous stresses by their form for an incompressible uniaxial fluid, and a treatment of the effect of chevron layer structure that develops in planar sample cells due to temperature-dependent layer shrinkage, as documented in previous studies on DIO. From the modeling, the layer compression elastic constant is estimated to be ~100 times lower in the smectic-ZA phase than in an ordinary smectic-A liquid crystal. Possible effects of the antiferroelectric layer polarization on the director splay elasticity and viscosity are described. The temperature dependencies of the splay, twist, and bend elastic constants and associated viscosities in the higher temperature nematic phase are also presented.

The transient negative capacitance (NC) of solid ferroelectric materials used in field effect transistors can reduce the power dissipation of electronics. Here we show that similar negative capacitance appears in the recently discovered fluid ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal (FNLC) films while switching their ferroelectric polarization. Instead of sidewise motion of domains with opposite direction of polarization of ferroelectric crystals, in FNLCs the polarization vector that at zero field aligns parallel to the substrates, rotates toward the applied electric field. In spite of that difference, the observed switching time per unit electric field values are comparable. Although current FNLCs have much larger electric conductivity than of ferroelectric crystals, they have several advantages: they are organic, lightweight, can be prepared and operated at ambient temperature, the direction of the polarization can be set by simple surface alignment, and they require much less electric field for switching of the polarization. The dynamics of swimming bacteria depend on the properties of their habitat media. Recently it was shown that the motion of swimming bacteria dispersed directly in a non-toxic water-based lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal can be controlled by the director field of the liquid crystal. Here we investigate whether the macroscopic polar order of a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal (NF) can be recognized by bacteria B. Subtilis swimming in a water dispersion adjacent to a glassy NF film by surface interactions alone. We show that B. Subtilis tends to move in the direction antiparallel to the spontaneous electric polarization at the NF surface. Their speed was found to be the same with or without a polar NF layer. In contrast to observation on crystal ferroelectric films, the bacteria do not get immobilized. These observations may offer a pathway to creation of polar microinserts to direct bacterial motion in-vivo., Comment: 29 pages, 15 figures

The isotropic to ferroelectric nematic liquid transition had been theoretically studied over one hundred years ago, but its experimental studies are rare. Here we present polarizing optical microscopy studies and theoretical considerations of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal droplets coexisting with the isotropic melt. We find that the droplets have flat pancake-like shapes that are thinner than the sample thickness as long as there is a room to increase the lateral droplet size. In the center of the droplets a wing shaped defect with low birefringence is present that moves perpendicular to a weak in-plane electric field, and then extends and splits in two at higher fields. Parallel to the defect motion and extension, the entire droplet drifts along the electric field with speed that is independent of the size of the droplet and is proportional to the amplitude of the electric field. After the field is increased above 1V/mm the entire droplet gets deformed and oscillates with the field. These observations led us to determine the polarization field and revealed the presence of a pair of positive and negative bound electric charge due to divergences of polarization around the defect volume.

Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals represent not only interesting fundamental science, but they also hold promise for storage capacitors with high power density or new information display technology having sub-millisecond switching. In this work we describe the synthesis and measurements of the physical properties of a new highly polar ferroelectric nematic compound, 4-nitrophenyl 4-[(2,4-dimethoxylbenzoyl)oxy]-2-fluorobenzoate (RT11001). The dipole moment of this material (along the long molecular axis) is calculated to exceed 11.5 Debye. We employ a wide range of physical characterization methods including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mass density measurement, optical birefringence, polarizing optical microscopy (POM), electric current analysis, and electro-optical switching, to show that RT11001 has three distinct ferroelectric states, F1, F2 and F3. F1 is purely orientationally ordered ferroelectric nematic phase (NF), F2 has a ferroelectric nematic with possibly short-range hexagonal order normal to the director (NhF), and we conjecture that F3 has a long-range hexagonal order normal to the director (ColhF)., Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures

Organic cavity polaritons are bosonic quasi-particles that arise from the strong interaction between organic molecular excitons and photons within microcavities. The spectral dispersion of third harmonic generation near resonance with the cavity polariton states is studied experimentally via angle-resolved reflected third harmonic generation measurements with several pump wavelengths. In addition, a three-step nonlinear optical transfer matrix model is used to simulate the third harmonic generation using the sum-over-states dispersive nonlinear coefficients, which include hybrid exciton-photon polariton states. The angle-dependent experiment and modeling agree, revealing that the output of third harmonic generation is resonantly enhanced when the third harmonic wavelength is near the upper polariton state. The degree of enhancement is higher on the exciton-like branch of the polariton dispersion. Lower polariton enhanced third harmonic generation is not experimentally observed due to inadequate coupling at the longer wavelength, which is also consistent with the nonlinear transfer matrix modeling. These results indicate that the sum-over-states nonlinear dispersion is descriptive of the process implying that the polariton states are terms in a complete set of states forming the basis for the perturbative calculation of the nonlinear optical response. In search for novel nematic materials, a laterally linked H-shaped liquid crystal dimer have been synthesized and characterized. The distinct feature of the material is a very broad temperature range (about 50 oC) of the nematic phase, which is in contrast with other reported H-dimers that show predominantly smectic phases. The material exhibits interesting textural features at the scale of nanometers (presence of smectic clusters) and at the macroscopic scales. Namely, at a certain temperature, the flat samples of the material show occurrence of domain walls. These domain walls are caused by the surface anchoring transition and separate regions with differently tilted director. Both above and below this transition temperature the material represents a uniaxial nematic, as confirmed by the studies of defects in flat samples and samples with colloidal inclusions, freely suspended drops, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy., Comment: 30 pages (including Supplementary Information), 7 Figures

We find that the hole mobility of the crystal smectic phases of the liquid crystal 1,4-di-(5-n-tridecylthien-2-yl)-benzene increases exponentially with decreasing temperature. While qualitatively consistent with transport via polaron bands, we find that it is quantitatively difficult to explain the behaviour with physically realistic parameters. In particular, the data demand either quite large typical optical phonon frequencies and/or phonon bandwidths. We also find evidence that an unusually highly ordered smectic-F phase templates the formation of lower temperature highly crystalline smectic phases, which may have implications for device development., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the authors. Crystals of 1,3,5-tripyrrolebenzene (TPB) contain closely packed, perfectly cofacial stacks of benzene rings with large wavefunction overlap, making it an interesting candidate organic semiconductor. We study TPB using a variety of ab-initio and band-structure techniques, and find very large $\pi$ overlap in the benzene stacks, broad bands (especially for electrons), and relatively small binding energies for polarons of both signs, making TPB a promising quasi-one dimensional electron-transport agent. We then explore the sources of the unusual packing in TPB, finding that calculations of intermolecular interactions using dispersion-corrected density functional theory provide valuable insights into why the crystals contain perfectly cofacial $\pi$-networks.
