The Williams Bridge in New York is currently undergoing a major rehabilitation, as transportation officials aim to provide a spacious span for vehicles, pedestrians and trains crossing Brooklyn and Manhattan. The $750 million-construction project, which has been entrusted to Perini Corp and O and G Industries Inc, is expected to be completed by th year 2001. One of the major challenges that contractors are facing in the bridge restructuring is decontaminating huge amounts of lead paint in about 13,500 steels. Traffic rerouting and unfavorable weather also pose problems for the contractors.
