This sample course assignment was developed by Dr. Shannon Tushingham for her WSU undergraduate class in Archaeological Methods and Interpretation (ANTH 230). This is one of several graded assignments that are explicitly incorporated to develop graduate student mastery in public archaeology education and dissemination skills by exposing them to creative public communication projects, activities, and discussions. For this assignment, students are asked to reflect questions such as, ���how is science is effectively communicated with the public?��� They are also tasked with researching examples of archaeology in public media from a variety of sources. This flyer advertises the course ANTH 499.02: Science Communication in Anthropology, Public Engagement and the Pioneers in Americanist Archaeology Project. This project project involved research on individuals who have made substantial leadership contributions to archaeology and cultural resource management. The project was spearheaded by WSU faculty Shannon Tushingham and William Lipe, and included research and undergraduate and graduate student class projects. As a public archaeology and science communication project, students were directed to research, write, and publish a Wikipedia biography about one of the ���Pioneers���. Many of these individuals remain unknown and their contributions underappreciated, largely because much research has not been compiled or communicated in an engaging way. This is an ongoing pedagogical experiment in engaged research methods that focuses on scientific dissemination in Wikipedia, which, love it or hate it, it is one of the most heavily used sources of information on the internet.

As an ���unessay��� assignment, students may select whatever topic or project they like, so long as the project is designed to reach some public audience. This particular project is given early in the course, and tasks students with defining project-specific communities and publics. This and later course assignments are designed to promote extensive group discussion and reflection about research engagement, ethics, and practices.
