We have extracted the nuclear level density of ${}^{128}$Te from a $(\mathrm{p},\mathrm{p} '\gamma)$ scattering experiment using the large-volume \labr\ and \cebr\ detectors from ELI-NP at the 9~MV Tandem facilities at IFIN-HH. The decay data were normalised using photonuclear data, resulting in nuclear level densities without intrinsic model dependencies from the constant temperature or Fermi gas models. The measured nuclear level density follows closely between the expectations from these two models, but we observe a clear divergence from a microscopic model based on the Skyrme force., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

Here, we report on the measurements of the $\gamma$-ray strength functions and nuclear level densities of ${}^{112,114}$Sn performed for the first time at the 9~MV Tandem accelerator facilities at IFIN-HH using the Oslo method. We extract thermodynamic properties and gross and fine properties of the pygmy dipole resonance for systematic comparison in the chain of Sn isotopes. The results are compared with microscopic models implemented in the TALYS reaction code and the fully microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model for the underlying nuclear structure of the dipole strength in ${}^{112,114}$Sn. The quasiparticle-phonon model results show the importance of complex configurations to the low-energy dipole response in the pygmy dipole resonance energy region. The experimental data are further included in the cross-section and reaction rate calculations for the $(\mathrm{n},\gamma)$ reaction of the $p$-process nuclei ${}^{112,114}$Sn showing a significant increase in reaction rates at high temperatures compared to existing nuclear databases., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures

The first systematic experimental study of the neutron-rich Br isotopes with two complementary state-of-the-art techniques is presented. These isotopes have been populated in the fission process at two different facilities, GANIL and ILL. New spectroscopic information has been obtained for odd-even $^{87-93}$Br isotopes and the experimental results have been compared with state-of-the-art Large-Scale Shell-Model and DNO Shell-Model calculations. As a result of such theoretical approaches, a transition from prolate ($^{87,89}$Br) to oblate ($^{91,93}$Br) shapes is obtained from the subtle balance between proton and neutron quadrupole deformations, as a clear signature of pseudo-SU3 quadrupole regime., Comment: 17 pages, 24 figures, 5 tables

The $\beta$ decays from both the ground state and a long-lived isomer of $^{133}$In were studied at the ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS). With a hybrid detection system sensitive to $\beta$, $\gamma$, and neutron spectroscopy, the comparative partial half-lives (logft) have been measured for all their dominant $\beta$-decay channels for the first time, including a low-energy Gamow-Teller transition and several First-Forbidden (FF) transitions. Uniquely for such a heavy neutron-rich nucleus, their $\beta$ decays selectively populate only a few isolated neutron unbound states in $^{133}$Sn. Precise energy and branching-ratio measurements of those resonances allow us to benchmark $\beta$-decay theories at an unprecedented level in this region of the nuclear chart. The results show good agreement with the newly developed large-scale shell model (LSSM) calculations. The experimental findings establish an archetype for the $\beta$ decay of neutron-rich nuclei southeast of $^{132}$Sn and will serve as a guide for future theoretical development aiming to describe accurately the key $\beta$ decays in the rapid-neutron capture (r-) process.

The decay properties of $^{133}$In were studied in detail at the ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS). The implementation of the Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) allowed separate measurements of its $9/2^+$ ground state ($^{133g}$In) and $1/2^-$ isomer ($^{133m}$In). With the use of $\beta$-delayed neutron and $\gamma$ spectroscopy, the decay strengths above the neutron separation energy were quantified in this neutron-rich nucleus for the first time. The allowed Gamow-Teller transition $9/2^+\rightarrow7/2^+$ was located at 5.92 MeV in the $^{133g}$In decay with a logft = 4.7(1). In addition, several neutron-unbound states were populated at lower excitation energies by the First-Forbidden decays of $^{133g,m}$In. We assigned spins and parities to those neutron-unbound states based on the $\beta$-decay selection rules, the logft values, and systematics.

The nucleus $^{180}$Hf is one of the most primary of examples of an axially symmetric prolate rotor. Combined with the presence of high-$K$ isomers, spectroscopic studies can provide important information on the nature of its single-particle levels. Precise measurements are essential for constraining nuclear models and interpreting the nature of such isomeric states. In this work, the nucleus $^{180}$Hf was populated using the proton pick-up reaction $^{181}$Ta($^{11}$B,$^{12}$C)$^{180}$Hf at beam energy of 47 MeV at Horia Hulubei National Institute of Nuclear Physics and Engineering (IFIN-HH). The spin of the 1374 keV state and the mixing ratio of the $1066$ keV transition have been measured, the latter with an increased precision compared to the previous value from literature. The presently measured spin of the 1374 keV state, currently assigned a tentative value of $(4^-_1)$, favors one of the two different values reported in the literature. The particular state constitutes the band-head of a rotational band in $^{180}$Hf. The measured multipolarity mixing ratio of the inter-band transition $1374 \rightarrow 309$ keV can provide important information for the testing and constraining of theoretical nuclear models used for the study of the intrinsic properties of $^{180}$Hf as well as its neighboring isotopes.

An extended investigation of the low-spin structure of the $^{65}$Ni nucleus was performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, via the neutron capture reaction $^{64}$Ni(n,$\gamma$)$^{65}$Ni, using the FIPPS HPGe array. The level scheme of $^{65}$Ni was significantly expanded, with 2 new levels and 87 newly found transitions. Angular correlation analyses were also performed, allowing us to assign spins and parities for a number of states, and to determine multipolarity mixing ratios for selected $\gamma$ transitions. The low-energy part of the experimental level scheme (up to about 1.4 MeV) was compared with Monte Carlo Shell Model calculations, which predict spherical shapes for all states, apart from the 9/2$^+$ and the second excited 1/2$^-$ states of oblate deformation.

The low-spin structure of the semimagic 64Ni nucleus has been considerably expanded: combining four experiments, several 0+ and 2+ excited states were identified below 4.5 MeV, and their properties established. The Monte Carlo shell model accounts for the results and unveils an unexpectedly complex landscape of coexisting shapes: a prolate 0+ excitation is located at a surprisingly high energy (3463 keV), with a collective 2+ state 286 keV above it, the first such observation in Ni isotopes. The evolution in excitation energy of the prolate minimum across the neutron N = 40 subshell gap highlights the impact of the monopole interaction and its variation in strength with N.

The structure of the doubly magic $^{132}_{50}$Sn$_{82}$ has been investigated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, populated both by the $\beta^-$decay of $^{132}$In and $\beta^-$-delayed neutron emission of $^{133}$In. The level scheme of $^{132}$Sn is greatly expanded with the addition of 68 $\gamma$-transitions and 17 levels observed for the first time in the $\beta$ decay. The information on the excited structure is completed by new $\gamma$-transitions and states populated in the $\beta$-n decay of $^{133}$In. Improved delayed neutron emission probabilities are obtained both for $^{132}$In and $^{133}$In. Level lifetimes are measured via the Advanced Time-Delayed $\beta\gamma\gamma$(t) fast-timing method. An interpretation of the level structure is given based on the experimental findings and the particle-hole configurations arising from core excitations both from the \textit{N} = 82 and \textit{Z} = 50 shells, leading to positive and negative parity particle-hole multiplets. Two-neutron transfer reactions serve as an important tool for nuclear structure studies in the neutron rich part of the nuclear chart. In this article, we report on the first experimental attempt to populate the excited states of $^{140}$Ba employing the 2n-neutron transfer reaction $^{138}$Ba($^{18}$O,$^{16}$O)$^{140}$Ba. $^{140}$Ba is highly important, as it is placed on the onset of octupole correlations and the lifetimes of its excited states are completely unknown, with the sole exception of the first 2$^+$ state. The experiment was carried out at the Horia Hulubei National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH) in Magurele, Romania. Lower limits on the lifetimes of ground state band up to the 8$^+$ state are reported. Furthermore, relative cross sections regarding the 2n-transfer reaction with respect to the fusion and the total inelastic reaction channels have been deduced. The excitation spectra in the deformed nucleus 158Gd have been studied with high energy resolution by means of the (p,t) reaction using the Q3D spectrograph facility at the Munich Tandem accelerator. The angular distributions of tritons were measured for more than 200 excited states seen in the triton spectra up to 4.3 MeV. A number of 36 excited 0+ states (five tentative), have been assigned by comparison of experimental angular distributions with the calculated ones using the CHUCK code. Assignments for levels with higher spins are the following: 95 for 2+ states, 64 for 4+ states, 14 for 6+ states and about 20 for negative parity states. Sequences of states which can be treated as rotational bands are selected. The analysis of the moments of inertia defined for these bands is carried out. This high number of excited states in a deformed nucleus, close to a complete level scheme, constitutes a very good ground to check models of nuclear structure. The large ensembles of states with the same spin-parity offer unique opportunities for statistical analysis. Such an analysis for the 0+, 2+ and 4+ states sequences, for all K-values and for well-determined projections K of the angular momentum is performed. The obtained data may indicate on a K symmetry breaking. Experimental data are compared with interacting boson model (IBM) calculations using the spdf version of the model. The energies of the low-lying levels, the transition probabilities in the first bands and the distribution in transfer intensity of the 0+ states are calculated and compared with experiment., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures

Here we report on the characterization of one of the large-volume LaBr$_{3}$:Ce detectors for the ELIGANT project at ELI-NP. The main focus of this work is the response function for high-energy $\gamma$ rays of such detectors. In particular, we compare a selection of unfolding methods to resolve small structures in $\gamma$-ray spectra with high-energies. Three methods have been compared using $\gamma$-ray spectra with energies up to 12 MeV obtained in an experiment at the 3 MV Tandetron\texttrademark\ facility at IFIN-HH. The results show that the iterative unfolding approach gives the best qualitative reproduction of the emitted $\gamma$-ray spectrum. Furthermore, the correlation fluctuations in high-energy regime from the iterative method are two orders of magnitude smaller than when using the matrix inversion approach with second derivative regularization. In addition, the iterative method is computationally faster as it does not contain large matrix inversions. The matrix inversion method does, however, give more consistent results over the full energy range and in the low-statistics limit. Our conclusion is that the performance of the iterative approach makes it well suitable for semi-online analysis of experimental data. These results will be important, both for experiments with the ELIGANT setup, and for on-line diagnostics of the energy spread of the $\gamma$-ray beam which is under implementation at ELI-NP., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

The structure of $^{34}$Si was studied through $\gamma$ spectroscopy separately in the $\beta^-$ decays of $^{34}$Mg and $^{34}$Al at the ISOLDE facility of CERN. Different configurations in $^{34}$Si were populated independently from the two recently identified $\beta$-decaying states in $^{34}$Al having spin-parity assignments $J^\pi = 4^-$ dominated by the normal configuration $\pi (d_{5/2})^{-1} \otimes \nu (f_{7/2})$ and $J^\pi = 1^+$ by the intruder configuration $\pi (d_{5/2})^{-1} \otimes \nu (d_{3/2})^{-1}(f_{7/2})^{2}$. The paper reports on spectroscopic properties of $^{34}$Si such as an extended level scheme, spin and parity assignments based on log($ft$) values and $\gamma$-ray branching ratios, absolute $\beta$ feeding intensities and neutron emission probabilities. A total of 11 newly identified levels and 26 transitions were added to the previously known level scheme of $^{34}$Si. Large scale shell-model calculations using the {\sc sdpf-u-mix} interaction, able to treat higher order intruder configurations, are compared with the new results and conclusions are drawn concerning the predictive power of {\sc sdpf-u-mix}, the $N=20$ shell gap, the level of mixing between normal and intruder configurations for the 0$_1^+$, 0$_2^+$ and 2$_1^+$ states and the absence of triaxial deformation in $^{34}$Si.

Excited states in the 158Eu nucleus have been determined with the 160Gd(d, alpha)158Eu reaction, studied at an incident energy of 18.0 MeV with the Munich tandem and the Q3D spectrograph. More than 50 excited states have been determined up to 1.6 MeV excitation, some of them corresponding to states previously observed in the beta-decay of 158Sm. The number of levels found in this nucleus at low excitation energies follows the systematic trend of the level densities in the other isotopes with mass 152-156., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Excited states in the deformed nucleus $^{158}$Gd have been studied in the (p,t) reaction by using the Munich Tandem and Q3D spectrograph. 30 new excited 0$^+$ states (three tentative) have been assigned up to the 4.3 MeV excitation energy. The total number of 34 excited 0$^+$ states (four tentatively assigned) in a deformed nucleus, close to a complete level scheme, offers a new opportunity to test nuclear models and obtain more information on the structure of these special states., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures
