6. Ka-band MMIC arrays for ACTS Aero Terminal Experiment

Abstract

An antenna system consisting of three experimental Ka-band active arrays using GaAs MMIC devices at each radiating element for electronic beam steering and distributed power amplification is presented. The MMIC arrays are to be demonstrated in the ACTS Aeronautical Terminal Experiment, planned for early 1994. The experiment is outlined, with emphasis on a description of the antenna system. Attention is given to the way in which proof-of-concept MMIC arrays featuring three different state-of-the-art approaches to Ka-band MMIC insertion are being incorporated into an experimental aircraft terminal for the demonstration of an aircraft-to-satellite link, providing a basis for follow-on MMIC array development.

21. ADR Configurations and Optimization for Cryocooler-Based Operation.

Abstract

Because of renewed interest in low temperature refrigeration for space missions, there has been considerable developmental work on adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators (ADR) over the last decade or so. As a result, they have expanded from single-stage systems requiring relatively low heat sink temperatures to multi-stage systems capable of rejecting heat to 5 K and higher. This capability enables the use of cryocoolers for heat sinking instead of superfluid helium — a critical step in meeting the space community’s need for long-life, low temperature coolers. Since there is no intrinsic limit to an ADR’s operating range, the interface temperature for a hybrid ADR/cryocooler system can be set to achieve various performance goals, such as maximizing total system efficiency or minimizing mass. In addition, a larger operating range affords greater flexibility in selecting a cryocooler. In this paper we compare the specific power of ADRs and cryocoolers to develop guidelines for optimizing total system performance, and discuss configurations and operating modes for higher temperature ADRs, along with future technology developments needed to implement them. Abstract

Magnetic thermometers are less sensitive to self-heating due to radio-frequency noise than are traditional resistive thermometers. This makes them appealing at temperatures well below 0.1 Kelvin in the operating range of many space-flight detectors. We have built and tested a magnetic thermometer which is deposited directly onto a substrate. This device, which uses the temperature dependence of iron-doped palladium’s magnetic susceptibility, includes self-shielding deposited coils surrounding a sputtered palladium layer. It is read out using a SQUID to achieve high resolution. Its small size and very good heat-sinking should eventually make it useful for the temperature control of space flight detector arrays, in particular those already using SQUID readouts.
