Background micro RNAs (mi RNAs) are single-stranded, noncoding RNA molecules. Given the vast regulatory potential of mi RNAs and their often tissue-specific and disease-specific expression patterns, mi RNAs are being assessed as possible biomarkers to aid diagnosis and prediction of different types and stages of cancers, including skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma ( BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma ( SCC) are the most common forms of nonmelanoma skin cancer ( NMSC). BCC originates from the basal layer of the epidermis, while SCC arises from epidermal keratinocytes or from the dermal appendages. Although NMSCs are currently the most common types of malignancies, both BCC and SCC have a better than 95% cure rate if detected early. Aim To identify plasma mi RNAs suitable for early detection of NMSC. Methods Expression profiles of 741 mi RNAs were evaluated using high-throughput real-time quantitative PCR from plasma samples in 42 patients with NMSC and 282 healthy controls ( HCs). Results Our results demonstrated that in patients with NMSC, compared with HCs, expression levels of miR-30e-3p, miR-145-5p, miR-186-5p and miR-875-5p were significantly ( P < 0.05) upregulated, while those of miR-19a-3p, miR-25-3p, miR-30a-5p, miR-451 and miR-576-3p were significantly downregulated. Conclusion Our study suggests that the mi RNAs with significant changes in expression (miR-19a-3p, miR-25-3p, miR-30a-5p, miR-145-5p and miR-186-5p) could serve as novel noninvasive biomarkers for detection of NMSC. Background: Behçet's disease is predominantly an inflammatory disease with oral and genital ulcus, uveitis and erythema nodosum. It is a chronic disease with unprecetended remission and activation periods. Behçet's disease may also affect extremities in the form of arthritis, myositis, enthesis, tenosynovitis and dactylitis. The most affected joints are knee, wrist -hand, ankle and elbow. A history of sytemic inflammatory disease in a patient with a hand disease or a one who is a candidate for hand surgery may affect the surgical procedure and post-operative rehabilitation. Thus recognition of this condition is essential for the hand surgeon, physiotherapist, and the patient. Objective: To evaluate the impact of Behçet's disease on grip and key pinch strength. Subjects: Fifty (31 male, 19 female) patients with Behçet's disease and 50 (32 male, 18 female) controls. Results: Hand grip and key pinch strength of Behçet's patients did not differ from that of normal subjects. Conclusions: Behçet's disease does not seem to affect grip and pinch strength. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is recognized as one of the most common oral mucosal diseases worldwide. The aim of this study was to determine the oxidant/antioxidant status in erythrocyte and plasma samples from patients with RAS in comparison with healthy controls. Twenty-two patients with RAS and 23 healthy controls were recruited. Superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) and catalase (CAT) activities, and malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidant potential (AOP) levels were measured in plasma and erythrocytes from patient with RAS and controls. We found decreased CAT and GSHPx activities and AOP levels in the erythrocytes, and decreased AOP and increased MDA plasma levels in patients with RAS in comparison with control subjects. In summary, this study demonstrated that enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant defence systems are impaired in patients with RAS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pyogenic granuloma is a common benign skin tumour. However, giant recurrent pyogenic granuloma with satellitosis is relatively rare. We present a 52-year-old man who had recurrent gigantic pyogenic granuloma with satellitosis responsive to systemic steroids. Our case of recurrent pyogenic granuloma is interesting because of its clinical presentation, recurrence following surgical excision and its steroid responsiveness. Cutaneous manifestations of COVID-19 disease have not yet been fully described. To describe cutaneous manifestations of COVID-19 disease in hospitalized patients. We examined the cutaneous manifestations of 210 hospitalized patients. Cutaneous findings were observed during COVID-19 infection in 52 of the patients. Lesions may be classified as erythematous scaly rash (32.7%), maculopapular rash (23%), urticarial lesions (13.5%), petechial purpuric rash (7.7%), necrosis (7.7%), enanthema and apthous stomatitis (5.8%), vesicular rash (5.8%), pernio (1.9%), and pruritus (1.9%). Cutaneous manifestations were observed statistically significantly more in certain age groups: patients of 55 to 64 and 65 to 74 years of age complained of more cutaneous manifestations than the other age groups. As for gender, there was no significant difference between male and female patients in terms of cutaneus findings. The relationship between comorbidity and dermatological finding status was statistically significant. The relationship increases linearly according to the comorbidities. According to the statistical results, the patients who were hospitalized in the intensive care unit had a higher risk of having cutaneous findings due to COVID-19 infection. Background: Chemical matricectomy is performed mainly by 2 agents, phenol and sodium hydroxide. Chemical matricectomy with phenol has a low recurrence rate and good cosmetic results, but it produces extensive tissue destruction and can result in drainage and a delayed healing time. These adverse effects have brought forward the use of chemical agents such as sodium hydroxide and trichloroacetic acid for matricectomy., Objective: This prospective study aimed mainly to evaluate the efficacy of partial nail avulsion and selective chemical cauterization of the matrix using 90% bichloracetic acid (BCA) in the treatment of the ingrown nails., Materials and Methods: A total of 30 patients with 58 ingrown toenail edges were included in this study. All of the patients underwent chemical matricectomy with 90% BCA after partial nail avulsion. Adverse effects such as postoperative pain and drainage were minimal in most of the patients., Results: One patient who underwent matricectomy had recurrence in a single nail edge (1.8%) at the 12th month of the follow-up. No recurrence was observed in 29 patients during mean follow-up period. This was considered to be statistically significant (p < .001)., Conclusion: This is the first study to use BCA for the treatment of ingrown toenail. Partial nail avulsion followed by BCA matricectomy is a safe, simple, and effective method with low rates of postoperative morbidity and high rates of success. Therefore, partial nail avulsion and BCA matricectomy can be used as an alternative treatment method for the treatment of ingrown toenails.

Background: Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystemic disorder of unknown etiology characterized by chronic relapsing oral aphthous lesions, genital ulcers, and uveitis. Immunological dysfunction is the most emphasized etiopathogenetic factor. Microchimerism is existence of an allogeneic DNA in a living creature. There are variable studies investigating the role of microchimerism on etiopathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. To our knowledge, no report has investigated the relationship between microchimerism and BD. We aimed to investigate the possible role of microchimerism on BD as an autoimmune disorder., Methods: We analyzed the SRY gene as an indicator of fetal microchimerism in our patient and healthy control groups. The patients were 105 women with BD over 18 years old who had applied to multidisciplinary Behçet's disease clinic at Mersin University between 2005 and 2011. Patients were divided into two groups: group 1 consisted of 39 patients having a son, and group 2, 15 patients either nulliparous or having a daughter. Controls comprised two groups of women according to whether or not they had a son, i.e., group 3 (n = 51) and group 4 (n = 52), respectively. All patients with BD fulfilled International Study Group criteria for the diagnosis of BD., Results: Forty-one of 54 (75.9%) patients and four of 103 (3.9%) controls showed presence of the SRY gene. The difference between the patient and control groups was statistically significant (P < 0.001)., Conclusion: As a result of our study, microchimerism may be associated with the etiopathogenesis of BD. The essential role played by CD25+CD4+ regulatory T (Treg) cells in the control of immunity against some pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori is now well established. But their role in cutaneous fungal infections is still unknown. Onychomycosis is the chronic fungal infection of the nails, which is very common. The aim of this study was to evaluate possible relationship of CD4+CD25+ Treg cells and onychomycosis. Peripheral blood samples were investigated for CD4+CD25+ Treg cells using flow cytometry analysis in 43 toenail onychomycosis patients and in 30 healthy controls. We have found that onychomycosis patients had a higher expression of CD25+CD4+ Treg cells than controls, with values of 8.45 +/- 4.47% versus 4.64 +/- 1.59%, respectively (P = 0.001). The results of this study suggests that increased numbers of CD4+CD25+ Treg cells may play a role in failure of clearance of dermatophytes from skin by preventing the protective inflammation which is leading to development of onychomycosis. Accordingly, we address the possibility that CD4+CD25+ Treg cells may play a role in immune pathogenesis of other superficial fungal infections.

Objectives: Although the etiopathogenesis of Behcet's disease (BD) remains unknown, increased neutrophil functions such as chemotaxis, phagocytosis and excessive production of reactive oxygen species, including superoxide anion, may be responsible for the oxidative tissue damage observed in BD. Cytochrome P-450 are a multigene family of enzymes involved in the detoxification and occasional activation of a wide variety of chemicals. Our aim was to investigate CYP2C9 and CYP2C19 polymorphisms in patients with BD., Methods: Sixty-two subjects with BD and 107 healthy control subjects were enrolled in the study. Polymorphisms of CYP2C9 and CYP2C19 were performed by real-time PCR with a LightCycler instrument. We researched associations between CYP polymorphisms and BD., Results: The frequencies of wild-type and heterozygous CYP2C19*2 genotypes were 66.1% and 33.9% in the patients and 83.2% and 16.8% in the controls, respectively. There was a 2.53-fold increased risk of Behcet's disease in individuals with the CYP2C19*2 heterozygous genotype (OR = 2.53; 95% CI, 1.22-5.25) when compared with the control group. But the CYP2C9*2, CYP2C9*3 and CYP2C19*3 gene polymorphisms were not related to an increased risk of developing BD., Conclusions: We observed that patients with BD presented with a higher prevalence of the heterozygous CYP2C19*2 genotype. Hereditary deficiencies of this enzyme activity may lead to an imbalance between pro- and antioxidant systems, resulting in the formation of excessive reactive oxygen species.
