Abstract

To tell the «chapters» of life of Giorgio La Pira (Pozzallo 1904-Florence 1977), we chose to follow a chronological order. Based on meticulous research and proposing extensive unpublished documentation, we describe the many commitments that – year after year – the Professor has found himself assuming and the various fields of his action, starting from his early years in Sicily. A very young university professor of Roman Law, intellectually engaged in the fight against fascism, constituent, parliamentarian, mayor, president of the World Federation of United Cities, La Pira has characterised his testimony in all these areas with fidelity to his deep faith and with concrete attention to the least, to the poor, to the defence of work, the right to housing, of social justice; and of the basic right to freedom and peace. For each year a summary of all the Professor’s activities is reported. The work is accompanied by over a thousand biographical cards and an extensive bibliography. A solid base to start new research from, and also a useful tool for reflection and study of the life and thoughts of Giorgio La Pira.

7. Fracture patterns evolution in fault-related anticlines: the analogue model perspective

Abstract

Timing and distribution of fractures related to folding is a crucial topic for migration and accumulation of hydrocarbons in structural traps. We performed sandbox analogue models to investigate the fracture patterns evolution in fault-related anticlines, e.g. fault-propagation and fault-bend fold. Analogue models allow us to: (i) reproduce geometry and kinematics of different kinds of folds, and (ii) describe and quantify fractures through time in all deformation stages. Three-dimensional digital model reconstructions facilitate the comparison of different steps in the evolution of fault-related anticlines and to highlight similarities and differences in fractures development. Quantitative parameters of fractures as orientation, number and average length have been acquired in each step of deformation using an automated procedure. The fault-related anticline models show that fractures development evolves with a cyclic and non-linear trend, depending on the geometry and kinematic of anticlines. We validate our approach by comparing experimental results with natural cases. Our methodology combined with other studies such as seismic surveys, field analyses and boreholes data may contribute to understanding the nature of fracture networks in real fault-related anticlines, identifying uncertainties and helping to reduce risks during exploration and drilling activities.

Abstract

International audience; The Po Valley (Northern Italy) is a composite foreland–foredeep basin caught in between the Southern Alps andNorthern Apennine mountain belts.By integrating the 3D structural model of the region with the public earthquake dataset, the seismo-tectonics ofthe basin is shown at different scales of observation.The three-dimensional geo-volumeis used to reviewthe seismicity around the region and validate the structure–earthquake association for such a complex tectonic framework.Despite the overall uncertainty due to the original data distribution-quality as well as the crustal scale modeldimension, the direct correlation between structures and seismicity a) confirms the Po Valley region as an activetectonic system and b) allows the whole structural architecture to be revised by a unique three-dimensionalperspective and approach.This study also indicates that 3D methodology is a powerful tool for better understanding of highly complexseismo-tectonic situations at both regional and local scales.

14. 3D structural and thermal modelling of Mesozoic petroleum systems in the Po Valley Basin, northern Italy.

Abstract

1D and 3D basin modelling was performed to investigate the Mesozoic carbonate petroleum systems of the Po Valley Basin (northern Italy), through integration of a recent 3D structural model of the study area with the distribution of potential Triassic source rocks, rock properties and heat flow models. Results from standard 1D maturity models show significant overprediction of the thermal maturity of deep Triassic carbonates in thewestern Po Valley, unless the effect of the substantial overpressure observed in these sequences is incorporated into the model. In order to further test this observation, two thermal scenarios were applied to the Po Valley 3D geo-volume: one based on the actual geological heat flow and a second model based on a reduced heat flow as a proxy for the delaying effect of overpressure on hydrocarbon maturation. The predictions of these two models were then compared with the observed hydrocarbon distribution in the western Po Valley. Both thermal scenarios are broadly consistent with the observed hydrocarbon distribution at the scale of the basin but, in detail, the overpressure model provides a better match between the predicted charge available from the kitchen area's postcritical moment and observed volumes of hydrocarbons initially in place within the traps, as well as with the observed and predicted hydrocarbon phases, as measured by the gas/oil ratio (GOR) of the fluids. Overpressure probably significantly delayed hydrocarbon maturation in the western domain of the basin, confirming results from previous studies. Beyond regional implications, and despite its relative simplicity and inherent uncertainties, the adopted approach demonstrates the potential of a consistent 3D integration of the thermostructural history of sedimentary basins to constrain the geometry and structural evolution of hydrocarbon-bearing traps, as well as the generation and migration of hydrocarbons into these traps.
