Abstract

Colliders are built on a foundation of superconducting magnet technology that provides strong dipole magnets to maintain the beam orbit and strong focusing magnets to enable the extraordinary luminosity required to probe physics at the energy frontier. The dipole magnet strength plays a critical role in dictating the energy reach of a collider, and the superconducting magnets are arguably the dominant cost driver for future collider facilities. As the community considers opportunities to explore new energy frontiers, the importance of advanced magnet technology - both in terms of magnet performance and in the magnet technology's potential for cost reduction - is evident, as the technology status is essential for informed decisions on targets for physics reach and facility feasibility., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

Future colliders will operate at increasingly high magnetic fields pushing limits of electromagnetic and mechanical stress on the conductor [1]. Understanding factors affecting superconducting (SC) magnet performance in challenging conditions of high mechanical stress and cryogenic temperatures is only possible with the use of advanced magnet diagnostics. Diagnostics provide a unique observation window into mechanical and electromagnetic processes associated with magnet operation, and give essential feedback to magnet design, simulations and material research activities. Development of novel diagnostic capabilities is therefore an integral part of next-generation magnet development. In this paper, we summarize diagnostics development needs from a prospective of the US Magnet Development Program (MDP), and define main research directions that could shape this field in the near future., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures Contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR comprises two arrays of high-purity germanium detectors constructed to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76-Ge and other physics beyond the Standard Model. Its readout electronics were designed to have low electronic noise, and radioactive backgrounds were minimized by using low-mass components and low-radioactivity materials near the detectors. This paper provides a description of all components of the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR readout electronics, spanning the front-end electronics and internal cabling, back-end electronics, digitizer, and power supplies, along with the grounding scheme. Abstract

We propose the construction of LEGEND-1000, the ton-scale Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless $\beta \beta$ Decay. This international experiment is designed to answer one of the highest priority questions in fundamental physics. It consists of 1000 kg of Ge detectors enriched to more than 90% in the $^{76}$Ge isotope operated in a liquid argon active shield at a deep underground laboratory. By combining the lowest background levels with the best energy resolution in the field, LEGEND-1000 will perform a quasi-background-free search and can make an unambiguous discovery of neutrinoless double-beta decay with just a handful of counts at the decay $Q$ value. The experiment is designed to probe this decay with a 99.7%-CL discovery sensitivity in the $^{76}$Ge half-life of $1.3\times10^{28}$ years, corresponding to an effective Majorana mass upper limit in the range of 9-21 meV, to cover the inverted-ordering neutrino mass scale with 10 yr of live time.

6. Development and performance of a 2.9 Tesla dipole magnet using high-temperature superconducting CORC®wires

Abstract

Although the high-temperature superconducting (HTS) REBa2Cu3O x (REBCO, RE-rare earth elements) material has a strong potential to enable dipole magnetic fields above 20 T in future circular particle colliders, the magnet and conductor technology needs to be developed. As part of an ongoing development to address this need, here we report on our CORC® canted cosθ magnet called C2 with a target dipole field of 3 T in a 65 mm aperture. The magnet was wound with 70 m of 3.8 mm diameter CORC® wire on machined metal mandrels. The wire had 30 commercial REBCO tapes from SuperPower Inc. each 2 mm wide with a 30 µm thick substrate. The magnet generated a peak dipole field of 2.91 T at 6.290 kA, 4.2 K. The magnet could be consistently driven into the flux-flow regime with reproducible voltage rise at an engineering current density between 400-550 A mm-2, allowing reliable quench detection and magnet protection. The C2 magnet represents another successful step towards the development of high-field accelerator magnet and CORC® conductor technologies. The test results highlighted two development needs: continue improving the performance and flexibility of CORC® wires and develop the capability to identify locations of first onset of flux-flow voltage.

Abstract

The paper describes the Faraday room that shields the CUORE experiment against electromagnetic fields, from 50 Hz up to high frequency. Practical contraints led to choose panels made of light shielding materials. The seams between panels were optimized with simulations to minimize leakage. Measurements of shielding performance show attenuation of a factor 15 at 50 Hz, and a factor 1000 above 1 KHz up to about 100 MHz.

Abstract

The superconducting ECR source magnet for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University was designed and built by the Superconducting Magnet Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). The 28-GHz NbTi ion source magnet features a sextupole-in-solenoids configuration, which is comparable to the VENUS ECR magnet operated at LBNL. A shell-based support structure using bladders and keys has been incorporated into the design to allow for adjustments of the preload and reversibility of the magnet assembly process. The magnet has been assembled and successfully tested to operational currents at LBNL. This paper describes the basic design of the magnet and the passive quench protection system. The test results are also presented, including the quench behavior of the magnet, the training performance, and the magnetic measurement results.

Abstract

Protection heaters are essential elements of a quench protection scheme for high-field accelerator magnets. Various heater designs fabricated by LARP and CERN have been already tested in the LARP high-field quadrupole HQ and presently being built into the coils of the high-field quadrupole MQXF. In order to compare the heat flow characteristics and thermal diffusion timescales of different heater designs, we powered heaters of two different geometries in ambient conditions and imaged the resulting thermal distributions using a high-sensitivity thermal video camera. We observed a peculiar spatial periodicity in the temperature distribution maps potentially linked to the structure of the underlying cable. Two-dimensional numerical simulation of heat diffusion and spatial heat distribution have been conducted, and the results of simulation and experiment have been compared. Imaging revealed hot spots due to a current concentration around high curvature points of heater strip of varying cross sections and visualized thermal effects of various interlayer structural defects. Thermal imaging can become a future quality control tool for the MQXF coil heaters.

Abstract

A collaboration between Fermilab and the Institute for High Energy Physics (IHEP), Beijing, has developed a beam position monitor for the IHEP test beam facility. This telescope is based on 5 stations of silicon strip detectors having a pitch of 60 microns. The total active area of each layer of the detector is about 12x10 cm2. Readout of the strips is provided through the use of VA1` ASICs mounted on custom hybrid printed circuit boards and interfaced to Adapter Cards via copper-over-kapton flexible circuits. The Adapter Cards amplify and level-shift the signal for input to the Fermilab CAPTAN data acquisition nodes for data readout and channel configuration. Th magnet is an upgrade of the previously reported HD2 and HD3 versions, with several modifications implemented to improve conducto positioning, reduce cable "hard-way" bending radius, an strengthen electrical insulation between cables and coil parts The magnet exhibited long training behavior, but showed a goo "memory" of the trained state upon thermal cycling. Ramp-rat dependence of the quench current, field quality performance characteristics and protection heater studies were conducted. Quenc propagation velocity and quench locations were determined base on the voltage signals; quench localization was further improve using inductive quench antenna and acoustic emission sensors Short-And long-Term acoustic precursors to quenching wer observed.

Abstract

The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR comprises two arrays of high-purity germanium detectors constructed to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76-Ge and other physics beyond the Standard Model. Its readout electronics were designed to have low electronic noise, and radioactive backgrounds were minimized by using low-mass components and low-radioactivity materials near the detectors. This paper provides a description of all components of the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR readout electronics, spanning the front-end electronics and internal cabling, back-end electronics, digitizer, and power supplies, along with the grounding scheme. Abstract

We propose the construction of LEGEND-1000, the ton-scale Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless $\beta \beta$ Decay. This international experiment is designed to answer one of the highest priority questions in fundamental physics. It consists of 1000 kg of Ge detectors enriched to more than 90% in the $^{76}$Ge isotope operated in a liquid argon active shield at a deep underground laboratory. By combining the lowest background levels with the best energy resolution in the field, LEGEND-1000 will perform a quasi-background-free search and can make an unambiguous discovery of neutrinoless double-beta decay with just a handful of counts at the decay $Q$ value. The experiment is designed to probe this decay with a 99.7%-CL discovery sensitivity in the $^{76}$Ge half-life of $1.3\times10^{28}$ years, corresponding to an effective Majorana mass upper limit in the range of 9-21 meV, to cover the inverted-ordering neutrino mass scale with 10 yr of live time.

Abstract

The paper describes the Faraday room that shields the CUORE experiment against electromagnetic fields, from 50 Hz up to high frequency. Practical constraints led to choose panels made of light shielding materials. The seams between panels were optimized with simulations to minimize leakage. Measurements of shielding performance show attenuation of a factor 15-20 at 50 Hz, and a factor 1000 above 1 kHz up to about 100 MHz.

Abstract

In this paper we present some results on the radiation tolerance of the CMS forward pixel detector. They were obtained from a beam test at Fermilab of a pixel-detector module, which was previously irradiated up to a maximum dose of 45 Mrad of protons at 200 MeV. It is shown that CMS forward pixel detector can tolerate this radiation dose without any major deterioration of its performance. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

High energy and nuclear physics experiments need tracking devices with increasing spatial precision and readout speed in the face of ever-higher track densities and increased radiation environments. The new generation of hybrid pixel detectors (arrays of silicon diodes bump bonded to arrays of front-end electronic cells) is the technology able to meet these challenges. We report the first results of the BTeV silicon pixel detector beam test carried out at Fermilab in summer 2004. Tests were performed using a 120 GeV/c proton beam incident on a 6 plane pixel detector telescope. The last prototype developed for the BTeV experiment (FPIX2) is tested in the middle of the telescope. There is no external trigger, and events were built using the time-stamp information provided by the readout chips. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

At Fermilab, a pixel detector multichip module is being developed for the BTeV experiment The module Is composed of three layers. The lowest layer is formed by the readout integrated, circuits (ICs). The back of the ICs is in thermal contact with the supporting structure, while the top is flip-chip bump-bonded to the pixel sensor. A low mass flex-circuit Inter connect is glued on the top of this assembly, and the readout IC pads are wire-bounded to the circuit. Abstract

The Front-End R&D group at Fermilab has been developing pixel hybridized modules and silicon strip detectors for the past decade for high-energy physics experiments. To accomplish this goal, one of the activities the group has been working on includes the development of a flexible high-speed and high-bandwidth data acquisition and test system to characterize front-end electronics. In this paper, we present a general purpose PCI-based test stand system developed to meet the stringent requirements of testing silicon strip and pixel detectors. The test stand is based on a platform that is flexible enough to be adapted to different types of front-end electronics. This system has been used to test the performance of the electronics for different experiments such as BTeV, CDF, CMS, and Phenix. The paper presents the capabilities of the system and how it can be adapted to meet the testing requirements of different applications.

An all silicon pixel telescope has been assembled and used at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility (FTBF) for the last four years to provide precise tracking information for different test beam experiments with a wide range of Detectors Under Test (DUTs) requiring high resolution measurement of the track impact point. The telescope is based on CMS pixel modules left over from the CMS forward pixel production. Eight planes are arranged to achieve a resolution of less than 6 μm on the beam transverse coordinate at the DUT position. In order to achieve such resolution with 100 x 150 μm2 pixel cells, the planes were tilted to 25 degrees to maximize charge sharing between pixels. Crucial for obtaining this performance is the alignment software, called Monicelli, specifically designed and optimized for this system. This paper will describe the telescope hardware, the data acquisition system and the alignment software constituting this particle tracking system for test beam users. Abstract

The paper describes the Faraday room that shields the CUORE experiment against electromagnetic fields, from 50 Hz up to high frequency. Practical constraints led to choose panels made of light shielding materials. The seams between panels were optimized with simulations to minimize leakage. Measurements of shielding performance show attenuation of a factor 15-20 at 50 Hz, and a factor 1000 above 1 kHz up to about 100 MHz.

Abstract

In this paper we present some results on the radiation tolerance of the CMS forward pixel detector. They were obtained from a beam test at Fermilab of a pixel-detector module, which was previously irradiated up to a maximum dose of 45 Mrad of protons at 200 MeV. It is shown that CMS forward pixel detector can tolerate this radiation dose without any major deterioration of its performance. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

High-temperature superconductors (HTS) could enable high-field magnets stronger than is possible with Nb-Ti and Nb 3 Sn, but two challenges have so far been the low engineering critical current density J E , especially in high-current cables, and the danger of quenches. Most HTS magnets made so far have been made out of REBCO coated conductor. Here we demonstrate stable, reliable and training-quench-free performance of Bi-2212 racetrack coils wound with a Rutherford cable fabricated from wires made with a new precursor powder. These round multifilamentary wires exhibited a record J E up to 950 A/mm 2 at 30 T at 4.2 K. These coils carried up to 8.6 kA while generating 3.5 T at 4.2 K at a J E of 1020 A/mm 2 . Different from the unpredictable training performance of Nb-Ti and Nb 3 Sn magnets, these Bi-2212 magnets showed no training quenches and entered the flux flow state in a stable manner before thermal runaway and quench occurred. Also different from Nb-Ti, Nb 3 Sn, and REBCO magnets for which localized thermal runaways occur at unpredictable locations, the quenches of Bi-2212 magnets consistently occurred in the high field regions over a long conductor length. These characteristics make quench detection simple, enabling safe protection, and suggest a new paradigm of constructing quench-predictable superconducting magnets from Bi-2212.
