In this work, three commercially available Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEAs) from Advent Technology Inc. and Danish Power Systems, developed for a use in High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC), were tested under various Operating Conditions (OCs): over-stoichiometry of hydrogen gas (1.05, 1.2, 1.35), over-stoichiometry of air gas (1.5, 2, 2.5), gas oxidant (O2 or air) and temperature (140 °C, 160 °C, 180 °C). For each set of operating conditions, a polarization curve (V–I curve) was performed. A semi-empirical and macroscopic (0D) model of the fuel cell voltage was established in steady state conditions in order to model some of these experimental data. The proposed parameterization approach for this model (called here the "multi-VI" approach) is based on the sensitivity to the operating conditions specific to each involved physicochemical phenomenon. According to this method, only one set of parameters is used in order to model all the experimental curves (optimization is performed simultaneously on all curves). A model depending on air over-stoichiometry was developed. The main objective is to validate a simple (0D) and fast-running model that considers the impact of air over-stoichiometry on cell voltage regarding all commercially available MEAs. The obtained results are satisfying with AdventPBI MEA and Danish Power Systems MEA: an average error less than 1.5% and a maximum error around 15% between modelled and measured voltages with only nine parameters to identify. However, the model was not as adapted to Advent TPS® MEA: average error and maximum error around 4% and 21%, respectively. Most of the obtained parameters appear consistent regardless of the OCs. The predictability of the model was also validated in the explored domain during the sensibility study with an interesting accuracy for 27 OCs after being trained on only nine curves. This is attractive for industrial application, since it reduces the number of experiments, hence the cost of model development, and is potentially applicable to all commercial HT-PEMFC MEAs. High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell constant current ageing tests highlighted that the characterizations used to monitor the state of health of single cells could be potentially degrading. An experimental campaign to analyze potential degradation due to polarization curves was carried out. More exactly, four methodologies to generate a polarization curve including Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopies (EIS) were cycled 30 times. The tested single cells were based on a commercial PBI Membrane Electrodes Assembly (MEA) with an active surface of 45 cm2 (BASF Celtec®-P 1100 type). Before the first cycling test and after the last cycling one, complete characterizations, composed by a voltammetry and a polarization curve including EIS, were performed. The results show that one of the MEA has a voltage which increased for one of the four methods to obtain the polarization curve. This growth is linked to a decrease of ohmic losses: in an unexpected way, it could be considered as a way to improve the break-in period. Similarly, the monitoring of CO2 emission (as corrosion has been suspected to be involved at high voltage, i.e. low current density) confirms the potential degradation of the electrodes during the measurement of the polarization curve.

High-Temperature Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (HT-PEMFCs) are a candidate for electrical energy supply devices in more and more applications. Most notably in the aeronautic industry. Before any use, an HT-PEMFC is preheated and after that supplied with its active gases. Only at this state, the diagnostics can be performed. A method of testing not requiring a complete start-up would be beneficial for many reasons. This article describes an extended version of the charging and discharging diagnostic method of HT-PEMFCs with no active gases. This extended approach is named "Test Without Active Gases" (TWAG). This paper presents original research on the influence of nitrogen temperature and pressure on the HT-PEMFC response to charging and discharging. A lumped-element model of an HT-PEMFC is also presented. A numerical result of using this model to recreate an experimentally obtained curve is also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As fuel cells are likely to be used in many future applications, dedicated power converters must be developed and optimized. A thorough knowledge of the fuel cell operation is thus required for power electronics engineers. This paper proposes a theoretical and experimental study of the behavior of a fuel cell stack subject to current harmonics. The fundamental role of the internal double layer capacitor is demonstrated. Index Terms--Current harmonics, fuel cell.

The test and the characterization of medium or high-power electronic converters, under nominal operating conditions, are made difficult by the requirement of high-power electrical source and load. In addition, the energy lost during the test may be very significant. The opposition method, which consists of an association of two identical converters supplied by the same source, one operating as a generator, the other as a receptor, can be a better way to do these test. Another advantage is the possibility to realize accurate measurements of the different losses in the converters under test. In the first part of this paper, the characteristics of the method concerning loss measurements are compared to those of the electrical or calorimetric methods, then it is shown how it can be applied to different types of power electronic converters, choppers, switched mode power supplies, and pulsewidth modulation inverters. In the second part, different examples of studies conducted by the authors, and using this method, are presented. They have varying goals, from the test of soft-switching inverters to the characterization of integrated gate-commutated thyristor (IGCT) devices mounted into 2-MW choppers. The auxiliary resonant commutated pole (ARCP) multiceLl converter is a soft-switched variant of the multicell converter. It is shown in this paper that the ARCP technique can be very efficiently used in multicell flying capacitor converters. The main properties of the resulting soft switching multicell converter are very similar to those of the hard-switched version. They are presented and validated by simulations as well as experimental results. In practice, due to the damping, the ARCP multicell converter can suffer from switching faults as in two-level ARCP inverters, but in the case of a multicell converter failures can occur in different cells. So, the main control strategies are evaluated and the switching process is discussed step by step, taking account of the main imperfections of actual control circuits. When they can occur, the switching faults are described and analyzed. Finally, an original quasisoft switching control that should give a high safety of operation is proposed. Experimental results obtained with a 900 V-100 A ARCP multicell inverter leg are given and the performances are compared with those of a hard-switched multicell inverter leg of the same rating. The imbricated-cell multilevel converter is well suited to high power applications. It allows the series connection of n switches with natural voltage sharing between these switches enabled through the connection of n - 1 flying capacitors. This paper deals with the application of soft-switching on this topology; to date, only the hard-switching mode has been studied. The use of soft switching enables an increase of the switching frequency (resulting in the size reduction of the flying capacitors) without a decrease of the converter efficiency. Of the soft switching methods considered, the Auxiliary Resonant Commutated Pole (ARCP) technique was chosen due to the relative ease in which it can be incorporated into the converter topology. Furthermore, this technique offers numerous advantages: loss reduction, no added stress to the switches and compatibility with PWM control. The main properties of the ARCP multicell converter are the same as the hard-switched topology: an increase of the apparent output switching frequency and natural self-balancing of the flying-capacitor voltages. This paper presents the results of both simulations performed and measurements taken from an experimental set-up in order to study the viable system functioning. The introduction of soft-switching strongly complicates the theoretical study of the balancing mechanisms, however. As a result, the authors depend on simulations to validate the natural balancing effect during soft switching. Lastly, a general method of loss measurement is presented. Results show that the converter losses are reduced by at least 30%. Index Terms--ARCP, multicell converter, opposition method, soft switching, ZVS.

Multicell converters were introduced ten years ago and, over this period, their properties have been thoroughly analyzed. Since then, this concept has lead to some other innovative topologies which are briefly presented in this paper. Different ways to introduce soft switching in multicell converters are investigated. The concept of distributing power over several switches, giving more degrees of freedom and using less passive components, is extended further with the stacked multiceli topology. Finally, direct ac-ac converters using the multicell approach are described. Component counts and oversimplified reliability rules may lead to the conclusion that multilevel converters are less safe than two-level converters, just because they use more components. A better approach might be to consider that they use a different arrangement of components and also that the consequence of faults may be very different. This paper is focused on the study of the consequences of faults in hard-switching and soft-switching multicell converters. Solutions to minimize the consequences of major faults are described. Differences between theoretical and real operating conditions can occur during fuel cell operation, which can affect the fuel cell voltage. In the aging campaign studied in this work, an atypical behavior was observed on the voltage. The aim was then to understand if the voltage drop could have been caused by differences in operating conditions throughout the test campaign. To this end, a model expressing the voltage of a fuel cell cycling a mission profile for 2030h as a function of the related operating conditions was implemented. A voltage law was tested and improved by taking into account several different sets of operating conditions. A comparison of the coefficients associated with the parameters was also carried out. The results obtained with the model convinced us that the early voltage unusual behavior seen on the aging campaign was probably not related to the operating conditions. • This paper aims to develop a fuel cell stack voltage model based on an aging campaign depending on the operating conditions. • A voltage law was developed, tested and improved by taking into account several different sets of operating conditions. • The model accuracy depended on the chosen configuration, with a better prediction when all parameters were considered. • We concluded that the early life voltage fluctuations observed were not caused by differences in operating conditions.
