6. A Statement on the Philosophy, Development, and Adoption of the Continuing Education Unit.

Abstract

The CEU (continuing education unit) appears to be fulfilling a long term need of the individual learner, the college and university, the professional society, the licensing board, the accrediting organization, the employer, and many other groups. It was established by a national task force from the National University Extension Association following a national planning conference and may be used in a variety of ways: measurement, recording, and verification of adult participation in programs, among others. Administrative concerns regarding the CEU focus on the number of units to be granted, the educational merit of the program, the evaluation of the participant's performance in the program, and the maintenance of relevant records. There are many possible applications of the CEU, and some areas in which its application is not appropriate. Discrimination in its use must be employed. Implementation of the CEU was facilitated by its adoption by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in December 1971. The association has developed guidelines for use and implementation of the CEU for institutional membership. Large potential users of the CEU are professional societies and associations, business, industry, labor, and government. (AG)

Abstract

Street gangs function as ongoing, open social systems in relation to their surrounding sociocultural context. Fundamentally, gangs are comparable to some family systems. In fact, most gangs do consider themselves to be 'families'. The same concepts used to describe family systems may also be applied to street gangs. Street gangs usually exhibit a highly complex organization, structure, process, and functionality. All of these aspects intertwine within and around the gang to form a web of interconnectedness and continuity. To better understand street gangs and provide effective intervention plans, they must be viewed from this systematic and holistic perspective.

Abstract

Ego identity formation in African American college students was examined within the frameworks of Erikson’s psychosocial theory and Hill’s paradigm of Black family strengths. Ego identity was measured by the Revised Version of the Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status, an instrument based on the theoretical constructs of Erikson. Family strengths were measured by the Family Environment Scale and the personality variables self-esteem and ethnic identity were measured by the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure, respectively. It was hypothesized that statistically significant relationships would be found between ego identity and the family environmental and personality variables. One hundred sixty-nine African American college students attending a predominantly White university participated in the study. The results supported a relationship between ego identity and family environmental and personality variables. The study further revealed that personality variables contribute more significantly than family environmental variables to identity achievement. Self-esteem was found to be a Significant predictor of ego identity and differentiated among the four ego identity statuses, Ethnic identity also proved to contribute significantly to the ego formation of African Americans. Of the family variables, religious-orientation, cohesion and organization were found to be significant predictors for some but not all of the ego statuses. Both father’s education and family income were Significant predictors of ego identity status, but age and sex were found to be nonsignificant in predicting ego identity. Ph. D.

Abstract

The disproportionate and devastating impact that alcohol and other drug use has had on the Black community is becoming increasingly clear as is the need for rigorous research on the causes of this inequity and ways to prevent it. As this chapter points out, researchers must first understand the culture and diversity of the African-American community and identify ways to effectively involve families and communities in efforts to prevent substance abuse. Increased efforts must be made to understand and reinforce protective factors, such as religious and church activity, education, employment, family support, communal orientations, and ethnic pride. Additionally, the field of drug abuse prevention would be greatly enhanced by the increased involvement of African-American researchers and professionals who have a vested interest in the needs of the population and have a greater advantage in overcoming community barriers. In conclusion, the specific needs of the Black community must be understood and addressed if we are to overcome the disproportionate burden alcohol and other drug use imposes on this community. It begins with an analysis of the epidemiology of alcohol and other drug use among African-Americans in an attempt to shed light on risk and protective factors.

36. Identification, molecular cloning and functional characterization of a novel NADH kinase from Arabidopsis thaliana (thale cress)

Abstract

NADH kinase (NADHK; ATP:NADH 2′-phosphotransferase; EC 2.7.1.86), an enzyme that preferentially utilizes NADH as the diphosphonicotinamide nucleotide donor, has been identified for the first time in plants. Low activity (0.4 nmol of NADPH produced/min per mg of protein) was observed in clarified protein extracts from Arabidopsis thaliana (thale cress) cell suspension cultures. However, unlike an NADHK from yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) (POS5), the enzyme from Arabidopsis did not associate with the mitochondria. NADHK was cloned (gi:30699338) from Arabidopsis and studied as a recombinant protein following affinity purification from Escherichia coli. The enzyme had a pH optimum for activity of 7.9 and a subunit molecular mass of 35 kDa. Analytical gel filtration demonstrated that the recombinant enzyme exists as a dimer. Hyperbolic saturation kinetics were observed for the binding of NADH, ATP, free Mg2+ and NAD+, with respective Km values of 0.042, 0.062, 1.16, and 2.39 mM. While NADHK could phosphorylate NADH or NAD+, the specificity constant (Vmax/Km) for NADH was 100-fold greater than for NAD+. The enzyme could utilize UTP, GTP and CTP as alternative nucleotides, although ATP was the preferred substrate. PPi or poly-Pi could not substitute as phospho donors. PPi acted as a mixed inhibitor with respect to both NADH and ATP. NADHK was inactivated by thiol-modifying reagents, with inactivation being decreased in the presence of NADH or ATP, but not NAD+. This study suggests that, in Arabidopsis, NADP+/NADPH biosynthetic capacity could, under some circumstances, become uncoupled from the redox status of the diphosphonicotinamide nucleotide pool.
