Abstract

BackgroundStudy populations in clinical research must reflect US changing demographics, especially with the rise of precision medicine. However, racial and ethnic minority groups (REMGs) have low rates of participation in cancer clinical trials.MethodsCriteria were developed to identify cancer centers able to accrue a higher than average proportion of REMGs into clinical trials. Comprehensive interviews were conducted with leaders of these cancer centers to identify operational strategies contributing to enhanced accrual of REMGs.ResultsEight US cancer centers reported a REMG accrual rate range in cancer research between 10 and 50% in a 12-month reporting period and met other criteria for inclusion. Fourteen leaders participated in this assessment. Key findings were that centers: had a metric collection and reporting approach; routinely captured race and ethnicity data within databases accessible to research staff; had operational standards to support access and inclusion; developed practices to facilitate sustained patient participation during clinical trials; had strategies to decrease recruitment time and optimize clinical study design; and identified low-resource strategies for REMG accrual. There was also a clear commitment to establish processes that support the patient's provider as the key influencer of patient recruitment into clinical trials.ConclusionWe have identified operational practices that facilitate increased inclusion of REMGs in cancer trials. In order to establish a sustainable cancer center inclusion research strategy, it is valuable to include an operational framework that is informed by leading US cancer centers of excellence.

Abstract

The Beliefs about Losing Control Inventory (BALCI) was developed to assess negative beliefs about losing control in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Since its creation, research and theoretical work support negative beliefs about losing control as a potential transdiagnostic construct. The present study revised and expanded the original BALCI to be more inclusive of control-related concerns beyond those that would be expected in OCD (e.g. concerns about losing control over how one comes across to others in social anxiety disorder; SAD). Undergraduate students (N = 440) completed a questionnaire battery including the BALCI-II item pool. An exploratory factor analysis of the 32-item BALCI-II supported a four-factor solution. Three of the identified factors capture the feared consequences of losing control: 1) overwhelming emotions, 2) dangerous behaviour, and 3) madness. The fourth factor captures inflated beliefs about probability/severity of those losses. The BALCI-II was found to have good convergent and divergent validity, good to excellent internal, and retest reliability and was shown to have predictive utility in both OCD and SAD, above and beyond existing disorder-specific maladaptive belief domains. Results suggest the BALCI-II is an improvement over the previous version and supports the relevance of these beliefs beyond OCD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This chapter (Principles and Practice of X‐Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry – 1: Fundamentals of XRF and Matrix Corrections) is a contribution to the Geostandards and Geoanalytical Research Handbook of Rock and Mineral Analysis – an online textbook that is a fully revised and updated edition of the Handbook of Silicate Rock Analysis (P. J. Potts, 1987, Blackie, Glasgow). Chapter 6, Part 1 (from Section 2 of the handbook dealing with techniques for the determination of major and trace elements) considers the fundamentals of XRF spectrometry and matrix corrections in detail. Part 2 deals with wavelength dispersive and energy dispersive instrumentation. Following an introduction dealing with the analytical characteristics of XRF spectrometry, Part 1 continues with a detailed consideration of the origin and excitation of X‐ray spectra. Sub‐chapters that tackle the interaction of X‐rays with matter and the matrix effect in geological materials follow this. Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) pain management options are currently limited. Fasinumab, an anti‐nerve growth factor monoclonal antibody, has been investigated in healthy volunteers and patients with OA‐related pain, among other conditions. Data from 12 Phase I‐III clinical trials of 92 healthy volunteers and 7430 patients with OA were used to develop a population pharmacokinetic model to characterize fasinumab concentration‐time profiles and assess the covariates' effect on fasinumab pharmacokinetic parameters. Participants received single or repeated fasinumab doses intravenously (IV)/subcutaneously (SC), based on body weight (0.03‐1 mg/kg IV or 0.1‐0.3 mg/kg SC)/fixed dose (9‐12 mg IV or 1‐12 mg SC). Fasinumab concentration‐time data following IV and SC administration in healthy volunteers and patients with OA‐related pain were adequately described by a 2‐compartment model. Bioavailability increased with higher doses; estimated at 55.1% with 1 mg SC dose, increasing in a greater‐than‐proportional manner above this. Body weight had the largest predicted impact on fasinumab steady‐state exposures, participants at the 5th and 95th percentiles had a 43%‐45% higher/22%‐23% lower exposure versus reference, respectively. Abstract

Purpose: Concerns about the likelihood, consequences, and meaning of losing control are commonplace across anxiety‐related disorders. However, several experimental studies have suggested that individuals without a diagnosis of a mental disorder also believe that they can and will lose control under the right circumstances. Understanding the range of beliefs about the nature and consequences of losing control can help us to better understand the continuum of negative beliefs about losing control. Methods: The present study used thematic analysis to identify common beliefs about losing control in an unselected sample. Twenty‐one participants, half of whom met criteria for at least one anxiety‐related disorder, were interviewed about their beliefs about losing control. Results: All 21 participants reported that losing control was possible. Losses of control were defined as multifaceted cognitive‐behavioural processes and were seen as negative considering the perceived consequences of the losses. Commonly described consequences were harm to oneself or others, powerlessness, and unpleasant emotions during (e.g., sadness, frustration, and anxiety) and following (e.g., regret, shame, and humiliation) a loss of control. Conclusions: These results suggest that perceived losses of control are common and that negative beliefs about losing may only become problematic when the losses are personally significant. Further, they offer important insight into what is common among clinical and non‐clinical beliefs about losing control and inform how these beliefs might be worth targeting in cognitive and behavioural interventions. Abstract

An update and validation of a measure of the BALCI (Radomsky & Gagné, 2019). Given that the original development and validation of the BALCI focused on OCD, items may inadequately capture beliefs about losing control in other anxiety related disorders (i.e., panic disorder & social anxiety disorder). This study aims to address these limitations by first extending the current BALCI to better reflect the transdiagnostic nature of beliefs about losing control. Initially, this will consist of item development, which will focus on generating a pool of items, based on cognitive theories of anxiety and clinical experience in order to expand the current BALCI to include beliefs about losing control which may better capture the concerns of individuals with panic disorder or SAD. Following item generation, this new item pool will be administered to a sample of undergraduate students in order to generate an updated and revised scale (i.e., the BALCI-R). It is hypothesized that following item generation, four factors will emerge, mapping onto four domains over which people report concerns about losing control (i.e., behaviour, thoughts/mind, emotions and physiology/physical reactions).
