Abstract

Geochemical and geochronological data from the Pinguicula Group and unit PR1 of the lower Fifteenmile Group (Yukon, Canada) provide information on sediment provenance and timing of break-up of supercontinent Columbia and seaway development on Laurentia's northwestern margin. The older unit PR1, in the Coal Creek inlier, has a near-unimodal detrital zircon population with an age of 1499 [+ or -] 3 Ma. Abstract

The terrestrial fauna of Antarctica consists of a limited number of species, notably insects, small crustaceans and other micro-invertebrates. Over long periods of evolutionary isolation, these organisms have developed varying degrees of tolerance to multifaceted environmental stresses. Recent molecular biogeographical research highlights the enduring persistence of much of Antarctica's current terrestrial fauna, with estimates spanning from hundreds of thousands to millions of years. Parochlus steinenii, commonly known as the Antarctic winged midge, stands out as one of the only two insect species native to Antarctica. Distributed across three biogeographic regions, southern South America and the Falkland/Malvinas Islands, sub-Antarctic South Georgia and the Maritime Antarctic South Shetland Islands, this midge raises questions about the temporal isolation of its populations and their divergence. Employing mitochondrial and nuclear genetic markers, we conducted phylogeographic and demographic analyses on 151 individuals of P. steinenii obtained across the three main biogeographic regions including the Magellanic sub-Antarctic Ecoregion (MSE) of southern South America, the sub-Antarctic Island of South Georgia (SG) and the South Shetland Islands (SSI) within the Maritime Antarctic (MA). Our data support the diversification of P. steinenii during the mid-Pleistocene around 1.46 Mya. This period included a branching event between a clade containing only specimens from the MSE and a clade containing individuals from a broader range of locations including the SSI and SG. Based on intraspecific phylogeographic and demographic inferences, we detected strong evolutionary divergence between the three main biogeographic regions. We also detected a signal of population growth during the deglaciation process in SSI and SG, contrary to the pattern seen in the MSE. 5. Wildlife documentaries present a diverse, but biased, portrayal of the natural world

Abstract

Wildlife-documentary production has expanded over recent decades, while studies report reduced direct contact with nature. The role of documentaries and other electronic content in educating people about biodiversity is therefore likely to be growing increasingly important. This study investigated whether the content of wildlife documentaries is an accurate reflection of the natural world and whether conservation messaging in documentaries has changed over time. We sampled an online film database (n = 105) to quantify the representation of taxa and habitats over time, and compared this with actual taxonomic diversity in the natural world. We assessed whether the precision with which an organism could be identified from the way it was mentioned varied between taxa or across time, and whether mentions of conservation and anthropogenic impacts on the natural world changed over time. Mentions of organisms (n = 374) were very biased towards vertebrates (81.1% of mentions) relative to invertebrates (17.9% of mentions), despite vertebrates representing only 3.4% of described species, compared to 74.9% for invertebrates. Mentions were highly variable across groups and between time periods, particularly for insects, fish and reptiles. Plants had a consistently low representation across time periods. A range of habitats was represented, the most common being tropical forest and the least common being deep ocean, but there was no change over time. Mentions identifiable to species were significantly different between taxa, with 41.8% of mentions of vertebrates identifiable to species compared with just 7.5% of invertebrate mentions and 10% of plant mentions. This did not change over time. Conservation was mentioned in 16.2% of documentaries overall, but in almost 50% of documentaries in the current decade. Abstract

The PREDICTS project—Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)—has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

Abstract

The Big Bang theory of an expanding universe lacks experimental and observational confirmation. This theory, though widely supported by astrophysicists, fails to account for such phenomena as the origin of galaxies, the lack of 'missing mass,' and the inability to find traces of the Big Bang explosion in the microwave background radiation. On the other hand, the characteristics of the background radiation do seem to necessitate an expanding Universe. Moreover, no thoroughly proven observation has been found to invalidate the Big Bang theory.

Abstract

The predominant spatial control on sulphide orebodies at the two significant base metal deposits is the architecture of Neoproterozoic carbonate lithofacies. At Gayna River, surface and subsurface mineralisation is limited to the peripheries of giant pinnacle reefs of an unusual type hitherto considered unique; at Kipushi, orebodies are associated with a lithological break previously interpreted as a fault but here reinterpreted as the steep depositional margin of a similar carbonate buildup. The zone of compositional and rheological contrast that generated where reef-flanking and overlying fine-grained terrigenous strata contact the Kipushi carbonate build-up appears to have focused later metalliferous fluid migration. 21. Structural and stratigraphic controls on carbonate-hosted base metal mineralisation in the Mesoproterozoic Borden Basin (Nanisivik district), Nunavut.

Abstract

Field mapping was carried out of the carbonate-hosted base metal showings in the Milne Inlet graben of the Mesoproterozoic Borden basin to identify the main geological settings for mineralisation in the district. The district hosts the Nanisivik Pb-Zn deposit which was mined between 1976 and 2002. All known showings are associated with faults, fractures or dykes, including major graben-bounding structures with significant displacement, extensive synsedimentary and reactivated intragraben structures and comparatively minor structures with negligible displacement. The brittle structural features, together with stratigraphic factors and primary lithofacies, control the distribution of base metal showings and define four main settings for sulphide concentrations. The first is spatially constrained by erosional highs on an unconformity surface which separates host dolostone and overlying shale, and includes the most volumetrically important mineralisation such as at Nanisivik. The second and third settings are widespread but volumetrically limited fault- and fracture-controlled showings spatially associated with intragraben fracture and dyke systems. Showings in the second setting are stratigraphically limited to dolostone immediately above shale, while those in the third appear to be stratigraphically random and show a close spatial association with structural features. Abstract

The age and origin of the past-producing Nanisivik carbonate-hosted Zn Pb deposit in Nunavut, Canada, have been controversial for decades. Various direct and indirect dating methods have produced results ranging from Mesoproterozoic to Ordovician in age, and previous studies of the mineralising fluids have suggested that the fluids were anomalously hot (> 150 °C). This study combines Re Os (pyrite) geochronology, in-situ sulphur isotope analysis, and fluid inclusion analysis to refine both the timing of mineralisation and the nature of mineralising fluids. Re Os pyrite analysis shows that the Nanisivik deposit formed ca. 1.1 Ga, broadly similar to the depositional age of the host rock and with the Grenville orogeny, making it one of few known Precambrian carbonate-hosted Zn Pb deposits. In-situ sulphur isotope measurements from Nanisivik show a narrow δ 34 S range of 27.54 ± 0.72, very similar to what has been reported before in bulk sample analyses. New fluid inclusion data show that the mineralising fluids were ~ 100 °C, which is not anomalous in the context of carbonate-hosted base-metal deposits. The fluids exhibit no significant spatial variation in homogenisation temperature in the 2-km-long ‘upper lens’ of the ore deposit, but recrystallisation and modification of fluid inclusions took place in the immediate vicinity of the cross-cutting ~ 720 Ma “mine dyke”. The deposit is broadly inferred to have formed during late Mesoproterozoic assembly of supercontinent Rodinia, when regional hydrostatic head developed under the influence of far-field stresses originating in the developing Grenville orogen. The Nanisivik deposit remains anomalous only in its age; most other aspects of this ore deposit are now shown to be quite typical for carbonate-hosted ore deposits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
