This study was performed to assess the combined effects of three salinities (0, 20 and 38 ppt) and three acclimation temperatures (15, 20 and 25°C) on growth performance, proximate composition and thermal tolerance of European Sea Bass (32 g) inhabiting southern parts of the Mediterranean Sea. Highest fish final weight (83.8 g) was achieved at 25°C in freshwater (FW). Specific growth rate (SGR) at 25°C was about twice higher than that at 15°C, while 20°C promoted an intermediate growth. The fish cultured in FW at 25°C displayed consistently lower FCR and better SGR than those in full strength seawater (SW). Salinity had strong influence on fillet protein and lipid compositions. Highest lipid content (14.9%) was found in fish held in brackish water (20 ppt), and the fish held in SW had the lowest lipid content. CTMin and CTMax values ranged from 3.26°C to 7.33°C and from 31.81°C to 36.68°C, respectively. The thermal tolerance results indicated that European sea bass is more sensitive to high rather than low temperatures. These results suggested that this species can be farmed in stagnant SW deep ponds with high ambient temperatures during hot summer months in southern parts of the Mediterranean. During cold winter months, however, this fish can be successfully cultured in low salinities or even in FW. © 2020, Central Fisheries Research Inst. All rights reserved.

Bu çalışma laboratuvar ölçümleri ve gemi performansı tahmini arasında ilişki kuran, son 20 yıldır gerçekleştirilen çalışmaları değerlendirmekte ve yine bu amaç için rasyonel bir yöntem sunmaktadır. Bu yöntem günümüzdeki modern fouling control sistemlerinin gemi üzerindeki performanslarının tahmini için kullanılan deneysel ve sayısal yöntemlerin bir kombinasyonudur. Burada “rasyonel” kelimesi tekne (ve pervane) koşullarını ve gemi boya sistemlerinin bu koşullar altında değerlendirilmesi anlamını taşımaktadır. Önerilen yaklaşım karmaşık gemi performansı problemi için tam bir çözüm sunmaktadır. Bu yöntem günümüz modern boya sistemlerinin genel özelliklerini, bahsi geçen deneysel ve modern sayısal yöntemlerin yardımıyla değerlendirdiği için “rasyonel” olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Önerilen yöntem genel kapsamlı olup herhangi bir gemi tipine ve gemi üzerinde bulunan boya sistemine uygulanabileceği gibi pasif direnç düşürücü sistemlerin değerlendirmesi icin de kullanılabilir. Bu yöntem gemi üzerindeki farklı yüzey koşullarını temsil eden düz levhalar kullanılarak elde edilen deneysel veriler ve bu verilerin gerçek gemi ölçeğine ekstrapolasyonunu içermektedir. Fakat gemi ölçeğinde daha gerçekçi ve direkt olarak performans tahmini için, kullanılan ekstrapolasyon prosedürü yerine Hesaplamalı Akışkanlar Dinamiği (HAD) yöntemi de kullanılabilmektedir. Bu yöntem özellikle yüzey kirliliği (fouling) dolayısıyla bozulan tekne yüzeyinin modellenmesinde kullanılmaktadır. Bu yöntemi kullanmak icin de deneysel veriler gereklidir. Önerilen yöntemin gerçekçiliği ve gücü “servis durumundaki” tekne yüzeylerinin etkilerini temsil etmesi ve son modern deneysel yöntem ve verilerin kullanılıyor olmasıdır. Bu yöntem araştırmacılara iki tahmin olasılığı sunmaktadır; pratik ve hızlı perfromans tahmini için ekstrapolasyon, ikincisi ise HAD metodu kullanılma olanağıdır. Bu yöntem sayesinde HAD methodu kullanma olasılığı, detaylı yüzey pürüzlülüklerinin fiziksel olarak modellenmesi zorluğu bariyerini de aşabilmektedir. Önerilen yöntemin doğrulanması için bahsi geçen gemi performansı gözlemi ve analizi sistemi kullanılarak tam-ölçekte gemi verilerinin toplanması gerekmektedir. Bu sistem gemi boyalarının yüzey kirliliği durumundaki etkilerinin değerlendirilmesi için özel olarak geliştirilmektedir.

WOS: 000388782000013, PubMed: 29943928, Aim: To study incidence, clinical outcome, and follow-up data of the gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) in patients diagnosed in the present Department. Materials and Methods: This study included the authors' retrospective clinical records regarding the cases of GTD which were diagnosed and followed up between January 2011 and January 2015. Patients' age, gravidity and parity, obstetric history, subgroup of GTD, gestational weeks, management results, and pre-post treatment 13-hCG levels was investigated and an incidence study was constituted. Results: Total of 56 GTD cases were hospitalized and clinical records of 16,840 normal spontaneous deliveries were evaluated during the study period. The incidence of GTD was 3.3/1,000 cases. After histopathological examination, nine of 47 cases were partial molar pregnancy, whereas 38 cases were complete moles. There were no choriocarcinoma and invasive moles. All cases were treated with vacuum curettage without complication. Conclusion: The GTD incidence in this clinic is high with a rate of 3.3/1,000 per pregnancy compared to Turkish literature. High birth rates of our population may play a role in high incidence results. Further investigation in this field is essential.

Rudder and propeller of a ship share almost similar long service history. The rudder is usually placed behind the propeller to make use of the strong slipstream flow of the propeller. By changing the direction of the slipstream flow the rudder functions as a remarkably effective control surface to maneuver the ship. While this is the fact the rudder also has several disadvantages including: (a) increased ship resistance as an appendage to the hull; (b) modifications to the stern arrangement to accommodate the rudder that enforces restriction not only to the propeller aperture but also to the engine room arrangement; (c) a non-uniform flow imposed in the propeller plane that can easily increase the vibration and noise originated not only from the propeller but also from the combination of the propeller with the rudder; (d) cavitation erosion on the rudder which can be annoying for high speed vessels In order to eliminate the above disadvantages as well as saving further energy, a new concept of twin rudder system is invented one of the Authors and called “Gate Rudder” in which each of the asymmetric rudders is located aside the propeller to exploit the benefits of an accelerating duct device. The main objective of this paper is to give the background for the gate rudder development and present methodology for powering performance of a ship with the gate rudder using the Emerson Cavitation Tunnel facility. The analysis include model tests to measure the local forces on the stern part of a model hull and gate rudder system in the cavitation tunnel as well as the prediction of the gate rudder induced velocities using computational methods. The papers further presents a flow chart for the fine powering performance prediction technology and cost effectiveness analysis of vessels using the gate rudder system.

In pushing for greener ships and more sustainable operations, designers and researchers are being challenged to increase vessel performance whilst reducing environmental impact. One topical, and a somewhat challenging aspect of this pursuit, is the reduction in Underwater Radiated Noise (URN). There are several European Collaborative Research Projects currently underway that aim to outline a framework for noise standards, amongst these projects is the Seventh Framework Project (FP7) “Suppression of Underwater Noise Induced by Cavitation” (SONIC) that has been tasked with concentrating on the URN from propeller cavitation; the main contributor to underwater noise generation. As one of the participants of the SONIC project the Newcastle University was involved in the full-scale trials and model-scale propeller testing campaign. The full-scale trial conducted on board Newcastle University’s catamaran research vessel R/V The Princess Royal involved cavitation observations though the dedicated observation windows above each propeller, Propeller Excited Vibration measurements as well as the off-board URN measurements. The model scale tests were made in The Emerson Cavitation Tunnel using a 1:3.5 scale dummy model of the starboard side demi-hull of the vessel. These tests tried to emulate, as best as possible, the full-scale trials in terms of measurement locations and viewing angles.

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between hematologic parameters and post primary PCI coronary no-reflow. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 145 consecutive STEMI patients (mean age=58.2+/-12.3 years) and healthy volunteer admitted within 6 hours from symptom onset were enrolled to the study in the cardiology clinics. The STEMI patients were divided into 2 groups based on the Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) flow grade. No-reflow was defined as post-PCI TIMI Flow Grade 0, 1 or 2 and angiographic success was defined as TIMI Grade 3 Flow. RESULTS: Diabetes mellitus hypertension and smoking status were similar between groups. With respect to baseline laboratory status, fasting glucose, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine levels were not significantly different between groups. The neutrophil/lymphocyte (N/L) ratio was also significantly higher in STEMI group (7.1+/-4.6 vs. 2.3+/-1.7, p < 0.001). Additionally, N/L ratio was also significantly higher in No-reflow group (TIMI Flow Grade 0, 1 or 2) group (13.1+/-4.5 vs. 5.3+/-2.7, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The N/L ratio, which is cheaply and easily measurable laboratory data is independently associated with post primary PCI coronary no-reflow.

PubMedID: 24943979 AIM: Coronary artery ectasia (CAE), is at least 1.5 fold dilatation of at least one coronary segment due to congenital or acquired causes. In this study, we aim to investigate the relation of CAE with microalbuminuria, which is a marker of endothelial dysfunction shown to be associated with increased cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with CAE detected during routine coronary angiogram (CAG) and individuals with normal CAG findings have been included in our study. Urine albumin levels were measured by immunoturbidimetric method from samples collected in the morning. Patients with an albumin/creatinine (A/C) ratio less than 0.03 were normal and the ones between values 0.03-0.3 were considered to be microalbuminuric. Patients whose A/C ratios > 0.3 had macroalbuminuria and were excluded. RESULTS: A total of 105 patients (60 with CAE and 45 with normal CAG) were included in the study. Serum creatinine, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and homocysteine levels were increased in the CAE group. Urine A/C ratio was 0.036 ± 0.040 in the CAE group and 0.018 ± 0.013 in the controls; the difference was statistically significant (p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Blood homocysteine levels and urinary albumin levels are significantly increased in patients with CAE when compared to individuals with normal CAG. Microalbuminuria and hyperhomocysteinemia, two markers of endothelial dysfunction might be associated with pathophysiologic processes leading to CAE.

CAA are usually asymptomatic incidental findings, but they may deteriorate coronary circulation, cause symptoms and lead to sudden cardiac death; especially in young athletes. Since interventional procedures are increasing rapidly for treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD) in the modern era, comprehensive understanding of CAA is becoming progressively critical element in dealing with CAD. Materials and methods: We reviewed the database of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory of Sani Konukoglu University Hospital in Gaziantep, Turkey. All patients who were subjected to coronary angiography from 1998 to 2006 were included. Results: Among 53,655 coronary angiographies performed, CAA were found in 653 patients (incidence of 1.21%); 590 (90.3%) patients had anomalies of origin and distribution and 63 (11.7%) had coronary fistulae. Separate origins of left anterior descending (LAD) and left circumflex (LCX) coronary artery from the left sinus of Valsalva was the most common anomaly (64.1%). Coronary arteries branching from anomalous aortic origin was the second most common anomaly (16.5%). Right coronary artery (RCA) originating from left sinus of Valsalva or left main coronary artery (LMCA) was observed in 55 (8.4%) patients, LCX arising from RCA or right sinus of Valsalva (RSV) was seen in 52 (7.9%) patients and LMCA or LAD originating from RSV was seen in 14 (0.2%) patients. There were 16 (2.45%) patients with single coronary artery and 1 (0.15%) patient with LMCA originating from pulmonary artery. Conclusions: The incidence and the pattern of CAA in our patient population were similar with previous studies. Angiographic recognition of these vessels is important because of their clinical significance and importance in patients undergoing coronary angioplasty or cardiac surgery.

The molecular mechanisms that govern bone and joint formation are complex, involving an integrated network of signaling pathways and gene regulators. We investigated the role of Hox genes, which are known to specify individual segments of the skeleton, in the formation of autopod limb bones (i.e., the hands and feet) using the mouse mutant synpolydactyly homolog (spdh), which encodes a polyalanine expansion in Hoxd13. We found that no cortical bone was formed in the autopod in spdh/spdh mice; instead, these bones underwent trabecular ossification after birth. Spdh/spdh metacarpals acquired an ovoid shape and developed ectopic joints, indicating a loss of long bone characteristics and thus a transformation of metacarpals into carpal bones. The perichondrium of spdh/spdh mice showed abnormal morphology and decreased expression of Runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), which was identified as a direct Hoxd13 transcriptional target. Hoxd11-/-Hoxd12-/-Hoxd13-/- triple-knockout mice and Hoxd13-/-Hoxa13+/- mice exhibited similar but less severe defects, suggesting that these Hox genes have similar and complementary functions and that the spdh allele acts as a dominant negative. This effect was shown to be due to sequestration of other polyalanine-containing transcription factors by the mutant Hoxd13 in the cytoplasm, leading to their degradation. These data indicate that Hox genes not only regulate patterning but also directly influence bone formation and the ossification pattern of bones, in part via Runx2.
